Objectives of the program

Overall goal of the program:

Develop individuals, able to lead and manage highly efficiently and effectively themselves and others.

• Build the basis of self-reflection and leadership competences necessary for effective leadership in a scientific environment.

• Develop team leading competencies to construct a participatory team-leading approach without losing focus and clear targets.

• Develop communication skills to manage and lead teams and staff.

• Develop diplomatic, constructive and respectful negotiation skills to conduct negotiations efficiently and to be able to manage conflicts within and between teams.

Module 1: Content and Outcomes

Role of a leader: Function + shaping of roles

• Human beings in a group have different roles –deliberately or unintentionally

• Typical roles needed by a group:• those who look for connection and cooperation in the group• those who care for the needs of the group and its members• those who look for the fun factor in the group

But also• the outsider• the provocator

• In their different life contexts people have very different roles: spouse, parent, friend, neighbor, colleague, road user, club treasurer, citizen of a country

• In each role, a lot, but by no means all, of their possibilities becomes visible

Role of a leader: Roles in organizations

Even in organizations, people have a bunch of roles:

Colleague, employee, supervisor, manager, leader

and eventually also:

Friend, party member, family member, fellow sufferer,Familiar ...

Role of a leader: designing a role

• To design a role people use a variety of professional experiences, life experiences, qualifications, potentials, values, images and fantasies.

• Sometimes they have taken similar roles in another context, e.g. Chairman of an association, coach in sports….. For many roles they have role models.

• From this reservoir of experiences and imagination they select what can be helpful for the design of the current role.

• The process of choosing can be conscious or unconscious.

• Design of the role is not understood in the sense of a theatrical role: "I play a role".

The role is the link between person and organization:

• How is the role of a scientific leader designed?

• What is expected from a scientific leader (by his colleagues, coordinators, others)?

• What do research institutions expect from scientific leaders?

• Where do you experience contradictions in the expectations?

• What is a good leader in scientific world (please use your preparation notes)?

Role of a leader: conclusion 1

• The way of leading is strongly influenced by personal values, one's own morality and ethics.

• These values can be influenced and controlled by the basic leadership values that prevail in an organization.

• The design of the leading role is also determined by the accordance or difference between self-image and external image.

• Regular self-reflection and open communication with supervisors, colleagues and employees on attitudes are the foundations for further development and successful leadership.

• What motivates your actions in (professional) life? or

• What is important to you in working with others?

• Motive = Expression of inner desire that influences the action of a person, i.ex. curiosity

Influence of personal motives:

• Motives are an expression of inner desires. • Motives are distinct for each individual. • People always try to satisfy their most distinct inner desires => high influence on

ones actions.• Motives show what is important for a person and what stresses her.• Motives are expressed in certain behavioral patterns.• Motives influence personal viewpoints.

=> If you are aware of your personal motives it can help you to change perspective in certain situations and to avoid conflicts.

LUXX Profile = instrument to get to know your motives

• Based on motive-oriented personality research.

• The LUXXprofile discloses which motives have the most priority for a person and how this triggers his behavior.

• Was developed in 2016/2017 by the University of Luxembourg ‘Computer Based Assessment Group’ .

• Distinguishes 16 fundamental motives

Goal of the peer-groups:

• Developing your personality is based on continuous reflection of experienced daily situations by using the input of the program.

How to organize the peer-groups:• App. four participants per group• Stable for the duration of the program• Fixe regular skype conferences between the modules • To reflect daily situations (using the input of the module)• Rhythm and number of skype sessions depend on the group

(recommended: every 6-8 weeks)
