Personalised Treatment of Breast Cancer
From the Bench to Bedside
Observation
• Cancers of the same type vary:– Natural history & presentation– Response to treatment– Individual survivability
• What underpins this variation?– Cancer genetics
Breast Cancer Study
• April 2012 – Prof Carlos Caldas (Cambridge)– Vancouver Breast cancer Agency scientists
• 2000 breast cancer samples– Genetics of tumour cells– Gene mutations
• switched on• switched off
Breast Cancer Study
• Changes in cells when they became cancerous grouped into 10 categories
• Each ‘category’ behaved differently– Prognosis– Response to treatment
Breast Cancer Study
• Implications– Tailored or personalised therapy based on tumour genetics
• Less toxic therapy for ‘better prognosis’ tumours• More intensive therapy up front for poorer prognostic groups
• Sequence full genome of all breast cancers over 5 years (n= ~2000)– Use this information to personalise treatment for each patient
