BEREAN6 Spiritual Gifts: Dr. Chuck Missler

The Spiritual Gifts are among the richest blessings for Believers, and yet also remain among the most divisive topics within the Christian community. 1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 14 reveal more about the work of the Holy Spirit than do any other passages in the Word of God. Our challenge will be to blindfold our prejudices and carefully examine what the Word tells us.

More blood has been shed over disputes of ownership and control of the traditional temple platform than any other location on earth. DEAR FRIENDSFROM THE EDITOR

Dr. Chuck MisslerEditor-in-chief, Personal UPDATE

For most people, January marks a time for new beginnings. Our New Year’s resolutions often testify to the fact that we all recognize the need for change in our lives. From personal improvement to more noble causes like reading the Bible every day, our desire to

turn over a new leaf seems to present itself most during this time of the year.

Sadly, from our own personal history, we know that we rarely have the willpower to carry out our long-term desire. Fortunately, the Bible tells us that God is faithful even when we are not. It also informs us that through the Holy Spirit we can experience not only new life but a new way of living that is guided by God Himself.

This year may God continue to bless you with His strength and insight as you continue to seek His will, study His word, and follow His ways.

In His Holy Name,

Chuck

The Holy Spirit is a person, repeatedly referred to as “He.” He is clearly a member of the Trinity and every major event in the Bible is specifically ascribed to each member of the Elohim as is highlighted in Table 1.

• Three Greek prepositions are used to describe our relationship with the Holy Spirit:

1) Para, “with”: The Holy Spirit works with us to convict us of sin and lead us to Jesus Christ.

2) En, “in”: Once we’ve excepted Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in us;11

3) Epi, “upon you”: There are some events where the Holy Spirit comes upon us.12

But is there something more? Indeed, He even gives us special “gifts.” I do not believe that any

of the “lists” of gifts are intended to be complete, only representative. No one should boast of having received a greater gift. No servant is greater than his master.13 Notice this list: Wisdom is first; tongues last. (!)

• Wisdom (sophia): Divine wisdom, contrasted with human wisdom;14 is one of the “Seven Spirits” of Isa 11:1,2; fulfilled in Christ;15 given to Steven,16 and available to us all.17

• Knowledge (gnosis): This depends, not on intellect, but on love; an intimate personal relationship. (Contrast Peter’s rhetorical performance prior to Pentecost with his two sermons after)!18

• Faith: Not simply “saving faith,” but an unshakable trust that God will perform miracles. As Peter and John in opposing the Sanhedrin, preaching the gospel, healing the cripple;19 Paul’s call to Rome,20 his behavior during the storm on the Mediterranean Sea.21 Even Elijah was “a man like us.”22

• Healing: Not a permanent gift, but a sovereign manifestation of the Spirit.23 Even Paul’s own “thorn in the flesh” went

unhealed.24 Furthermore, he indirectly admits that he lacked the ability to heal either Epaphroditus,25 Timothy,26 or Trophimus.27 Yet, we should not cease asking.28

• Miracles: Miracles were the distinctive mark of an apostle.29 They were used to confirm the message of the gospel.30 More miracles took place during Jesus’ ministry, than at any other time in Biblical history. The supreme one being the resurrection, which is the subject of Chapter 15.

• Prophecy: “Forthtelling,” a key element at Corinth (as seen in Chapter 11), sometimes predictions (Agabus,31) or to interpret God’s Will to the church.32 Prophetic utterances are always to be judged by Scripture.33 God’s Word is always the standard.

• Discerning of the Spirits: Satan, often as an Angel of Light,34 communicates false information and deceit, as with Eve.35 The prophet Micah revealed to the kings of Israel and Judah that a lying spirit spoke through the mouths of all the prophets of Israel. 36 Jesus discerned the voice of Satan in Peter;37 Paul recognized Bar-Jesus as the son of the devil,38 and the fortune-telling of the slave girl.39 John instructed us to test the spirits.40 In the end times, Satan and his cohorts will work miracles.41 There will be false teachers also.42

• Tongues: It seems that the church at Corinth had become extremely preoccupied with the gift of tongues. The exercise of this gift also generated so many problems that an entire chapter (14) is devoted to them.

The Gift of Tongues in the NT: At Pentecost;43 when the Lord Jesus was saying farewell to His disciples, He said, “these signs shall follow them that believe...they shall speak with new tongues.”44 Following Peter’s address in the house of Cornelius, the Holy Spirit fell upon those assembled there and they spoke with tongues.45 When Paul came to Ephesus he found a few believers who were unrecognizable as Christians. He asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit and they said they had never heard of it. They then received the Holy Spirit and we are told that they spoke with tongues.46 Speaking in unknown tongues often accompanies the epi relationship.47

The Key Admonition: “…dividing to every man severally as He will.”

1 Corinthians 12:11 KJV

• No one received all the gifts and no one is without a gift. The Spirit neglects no one and all is the result of His divine prerogative. We each can have all of the “graces” but we cannot have all of the “gifts.”48

Are the Spiritual Gifts for today?Throughout this passage, Paul speaks in the present passive

indicative (“is being given”) to convey that God continues to give these special gifts to His people.

1) The Holy Spirit is immutable: He changes not.2) Where does it say they are to terminate? In Jesus’

Upper Room confirmations, He makes no mention of their termination.

3) Peter’s Declaration is definitive: “This is that which was spoken of by Joel”49—for the last days (which began at Pentecost) and this doesn’t end until the last days!!!

43 Acts 244 Mark 16:1745 Acts 10:45-4646 Acts 19:647 Acts 2, 10, 1948 Gal 5:22-2349 Joel 2:28-32, quoted in Acts 2:15-18.

There are some that maintain that these gifts only continued until the “canon” was complete (leaning on 1 Corinthians 13:10, “when that which is perfect is come” or complete); however, no doctrine can be based on the “completion of the canon” due to the omission of the seven thunders in Revelation 10:4, as well as other considerations.

Paul gives us three directives:

1. First, pursue love (in many ways this concludes in Chapter 13). The fruit of the Spirit, love,50 is more important than gifts. (I believe we do better as “fruit inspectors” rather than “gift inspectors.”)

2. Second, desire (“strive eagerly”) for the spiritual gifts; God’s sovereignty does not cancel man’s responsibility. It’s interesting that there appears to be a commitment on our part. We must ask.51 [Paul uses the word “pursue” eight times in his letters.52 The verb requires intensity and determination.]

3. Third, especially that you prophesy. Prophecy is preferred, repeatedly.53

Desire the greater (higher) gifts. (Chapter 14 will relegate tongues to the last on the list; extolling prophesying—forthtelling the gospel.)

Yet Paul will show us “a more excellent way”: Chapter 13. Love is not a “spiritual gift” but rather a complete way of life.54

[A challenge: Substitute “Jesus” in the places where Agapè appears; it fits beautifully. Then substitute your own name: it will highlight a profound “shortfall…” Pray about it.]

TEMPLE

There is no place that is considered a more significant as well as volatile, piece of real estate than the Temple Mount. Some say that World War III will erupt there. More blood

has been shed over disputes of ownership and control of the traditional temple platform than any other location on earth. But some now believe the temple of Solomon was never even there at all, and that the legend of it being at that spot has gone unchallenged for so long now that tradition seems to have sealed reality into a long forgotten tomb.

Like so many, I thought that the location for the temple of Solomon had been proven to be on the traditional Temple Mount in Jerusalem. But, I became suspicious after reading the work of the late archaeologist and author, Dr. Ernest L. Martin. My research efforts would not have been possible without his ground-breaking insights. However, I hope that my own personal research presented herein offers a bold new chapter in this potentially history-adjusting subject.

More blood has been shed over disputes of ownership and control of the traditional temple platform than any other location on earth.

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!Jesus warned His disciples of the coming destruction of the

temple and that not one stone of the temple would be left on top of another. Matthew 24:1-2 says, “Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Christ’s words clearly state that the entire temple, each and every stone, would be dug up, dislodged, and tossed away.

It is interesting to note that there are massive stone blocks by the thousands set in the wall supporting the Temple Mount platform. Was Jesus wrong in His prophesying that not one stone would remain standing?

Historian Flavius Josephus wrote that the entirety of the temple was indeed in total ruin and destruction after 70 AD. He went on to say that if he had not personally been in Jerusalem during the war and

witnessed the demolition by Titus of the temple that took place there, he wouldn’t have believed it ever existed. Josephus (Jewish Wars, VII, 1.1) speaks of widespread destruction in all Jerusalem as well.

So, if the Temple was completely destroyed to the last stone being toppled over, what is, and was, the huge stone fortress we see today rising over Jerusalem? I believe, as do others, that it once was the Roman fort occupied by the mighty Tenth Legion (Legio X Fretensis). I also believe that the true site of Solomon’s temple is about a thousand feet south of the temple mount in the City of David. This would mean that Jesus was correct in His prophetic words and that each and every stone, to the last one, was thrown down.

WHERE WAS THE TEMPLE? The garrison of Fort Antonia in Jerusalem was as big as several

cities, according to Josephus, housing approximately 6,000 men plus the needed support staff. All told, as many as 10,000 personnel served there. But this huge fort has never been found in Jerusalem by archaeologists. I feel that the reason archaeologists have not found the mighty Roman fort is because the tradition of the Temple Mount complex being the temple site has blinded them.

CITY OF DAVID Three thousand years ago, the City of David was about 12 acres in

size and had an estimated population of only around 2,000 people. It is a finger of land just south of the present traditional Temple Mount. As a former policeman, I would like at this point to lay out a linear case for the City of David as the one and only place for the temple, but first must present a brief history. The Jebusite fortification was a fortress, albeit a small one, but it had what David wanted. It was strategically situated, with a high walled castle-looking complex rising majestically from the Kidron Valley. A spring flowed abundantly inside with clear, pure water, which made it even more desirable.

The Bible tells us that while David and his army were outside looking up at the Jebusite stronghold, there, standing defiant on the top of the walls were men hollering down mockingly. 2 Samuel 5:6-10 describes it this way:

“You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David). Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul), he shall be chief and captain. “Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David.

2 Samuel 5:6-10 NKJV

David took control of what the Bible calls the Stronghold of Zion (Metsudat Tsion), that is, the City of David. These last two locales (Stronghold of Zion and the City of David) are the huge keys to solving the riddle as to where the true temple is located. But to keep on a straight path regarding the true temple site, let’s go back to David capturing the City of David from the Jebusites. After he was in his newly taken fortress, David was visited by an angel of the Lord that pointed out the desired patch of real estate within the city walls that David was to purchase from Araunah (Ornan) the Jebusite (2 Samuel 24:18-25). This land purchase was for a threshing

floor—usually comprised of a level area paved with flat stones where grain is tossed in the air and the wind carries away the lighter chaff (worthless husks of broken straw) and leaves the heavier kernel of wheat to fall on the threshing floor. It is interesting, that David had captured the 12-acre fortress by force, yet God was now ordering David to pay money to the Jebusite owner for a threshing floor. But this comment in Scripture is a huge clue for the temple location. In 2 Chronicles 3:1 we read: “Now Solomon began to build the temple at the house of the Lord at Jerusalem…at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.” This verse conclusively says that the temple will

be built in the strict boundary of the City of David at the place of the threshing floor bought from the Jebusite. That can only be in the City of David, and this makes it impossible for the Temples to have been on the Temple mount.

A CITY LOST Over time, the temple was built by Solomon in the City of

David, but it was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC, only to have other successive temples rebuilt with far less grandeur, finally ending with Herod building his temple which Christ actually visited on many occasions. Herod’s temple was destroyed, just as Jesus predicted, down to the very last stone. As time passed, no one knew where the completely destroyed temple really was. And since the Stronghold of Zion was in the City of David, Zion had vanished as well. For almost two millennia, Zion and the City of David laid silently together, buried in a forgotten tomb of earth.

Zion, the City of David, and the temple all intersect as one. I offer the following synopsis of Biblical clues:

• 2 Samuel 5:7 Zion = City of David • Joel 2:1 Zion = My holy mountain = temple • Joel 3:17 Zion = My holy mountain = temple • Joel 3:21 Zion = where the Lord dwells = temple • Psalm 2:6 Zion = My holy hill = Christ reigning = temple • Psalm 9:11 Zion = where the Lord dwells = temple • Psalm 20:2 Zion = from sanctuary = from temple • Psalm 65:1,4 Zion = Your holy temple • Psalm 102:16,19 Zion = sanctuary =City of David = temple • Psalm 132:8,13 Zion = ark resting place=City of David= temple • Isaiah 2:3 Zion = Mountain of the Lord = House of the God of

attractive feature in Jerusalem as a potential candidate site for their lost temple. The impressive high-walled fortress of the Dome of the Rock was the most impressive structure that was still standing in Jerusalem, so some assumed it must have certain historical prominence—and that prominence was the temple itself.

Even though many still argued as to where the true temple site was, a Benjamin Tudela (1169) proclaimed emphatically that the Muslim Haram al- Sharif, the current traditional Temple Mount platform, was the proper placement of Solomon’s temple.

Eusebius, from the third and fourth century, was curator of the Library at Caesarea. He was a renowned scholar who is still regarded with distinction today. He wrote, “The hill called Zion and Jerusalem, the building there, that is to say, the temple, the Holy of Holies, the Altar, and whatever else was there dedicated to the glory of God have been utterly removed or shaken, in fulfillment of the word.” So here we have the prominent Eusebius clarifying with narrow and crystal certainty where the temple was located. He tells us that Zion is the temple site as mentioned in his writings and further notes only a few lines later that sadly, after the ruin of Zion (City of David), the very stones from “the temple itself and from its ancient sanctuary” were scavenged from the temple site in Zion and used for the construction of “idol temples and of theatres for the populous.”

If I take the words of Eusebius and assemble them into a paraphrased short paragraph it would read as follows: Zion is the place of the temple, the Holy of Holies as well as the Altar. Everything there was shaken down and subsequently ruined. The scattered stones from the ancient destroyed sanctuary (in Zion/City of David) were all carried away and made into secular structures demeaning to God.

When the City of David was missing, and

respectively so was Zion, scholars and worshipers

in the middle ages looked to the most attractive

feature in Jerusalem as a potential candidate site

for their lost temple.

Alexander the Great, known as Hecateus of Abdera, testified that the temple was not only in Zion, but located “nearly in the very center of the City of David.”

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY? • 2 Samuel 5:7: “Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of

Zion (that is, the City of David).” Zion is undoubtedly within the City of David.

• Joel 3:17: “So shall you know that I am the Lord your God, dwelling in Zion My holy mountain.” “My holy Mountain,” (temple) is, without question, in Zion within the City of David.

• Joel 2:1: “Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in My holy mountain!” ”My holy mountain” is the temple in Zion.

• Psalm 132:8,13: “Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength…For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place.” The “ark of Your strength” is the Ark of the Covenant. The temple will house the ark in prophecy and Zion is God’s chosen place for that, as well as the temple placement.

• Psalm 2:6: “Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion.” The word King is for Christ in this verse, and holy hill is the temple location in Zion.

• Psalm 102:16,19: “For the Lord shall build up Zion…For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary; from heaven the Lord viewed the earth.” Zion and sanctuary/temple are the same location.

• Isaiah 2:3: “Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord. To the house of the God of Jacob…For out of Zion shall go forth the law...” Mountain of the Lord,” is the temple at Zion.

• Isaiah 24:23: “For the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion...” This is Christ reigning in the temple at Zion.

• Psalm 20:2: “May He send you help from the sanctuary and strengthen you out of Zion.” Sanctuary is the temple at Zion.

• Psalm 9:11: “Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion!” The Lord dwells in the temple at Zion.

• Joel 3:21: “For the Lord dwells in Zion.” He resides in the temple at Zion.

• Psalm 65:1,4: “Praise is awaiting you, O God, in Zion... We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple.” The holy temple is at Zion.

• Isaiah 66:20: “‘...to My holy mountain Jerusalem,’ says the Lord, ‘as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord.’” “My holy mountain” is connected to “the house of the Lord’s temple” (see Joel 3:17 previous page). The temple is self-evident as being in Zion.

• 2 Chronicles 3:1: “Now Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem...at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.” This verse conclusively says that the temple will be built in the strict boundary of the City of David which was the same boundary of the Jebusite city. Zion is the place which links everything together. It is the flaming arrow of all clues that flies directly at the heart of the City of David and the true temple location.

• 1 Kings 1:38-39: ”So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule and took him to Gihon. Then Zadok, the priest took a horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon....” The Bible is actually saying here that Solomon was taken to the Gihon Spring and at that very spot the priest enters the tabernacle that held the Ark of the Covenant and gets oil to anoint the newly crowned king.” The tabernacle, with the ark in its hold, was at Gihon Spring in the City of David at Zion. I believe this event happened at the same Gihon Spring where David set the tent tabernacle in very close proximity to the threshing floor area.

David’s tent stood for some 38 years housing the Ark of the Covenant until Solomon moved the ark up to his newly built temple, which was more than likely located side by side with the Ophel mound area at the Gihon Spring. The Ophel is translated in the King James Version as the stronghold, the same word used in 2 Samuel 5:7.

GOD’S “HOLY MOUNTAIN” The City of David was rediscovered in the later 1800s and its

walls begin at about 600 feet south of today’s traditional Temple Mount/Dome of the Rock. I found that the Bible further states, “So shall you know that I am the Lord your God, dwelling in Zion My holy mountain” (Joel 3:17). This is reflective of the verse which reads, “My holy mountain Jerusalem...as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord” (Isaiah 66:20).

These verses indicate that “My holy mountain” is the same as “the House of the Lord,” which is synonymous with the temple. Since the threshing floor is the site of the temple, which is in the City of David, as well as the true place of Zion, it seems all three converge and solidify in logical summation, as well as logical submission, that the true location of the temple needs to shift to its proper and original site—south of the traditional Temple Mount. Micah 4:2-13 gives a further prophetic picture of the temple being located on the threshing floor in the City of David. From the Oxford Study Bible (OSB), let me seam several verses together to make that point: In the days to come, The mountain of the Lord’s house Will be established higher than all other mountains; The Lord will bring their King on Mount Zion They do not know the Lord’s thoughts or understand His purpose; For He has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor; Start your threshing you people of Zion.

The “Lord’s house” (as referenced above) is the temple itself. So we have another non-retractable connector with the temple,

David’s tent stood for some 38 years housing the Ark of the Covenant until Solomon moved the ark up to his newly built temple...

Zion, and the threshing floor. Once again, the threshing floor (see 2 Chronicles 3:1) is all important in identifying the temple location. Its connection to Zion, in the City of David, adds to the corroborative evidence of the true temple location.

Many ancient historians site a spring at the true temple location. The Roman historian Tacitus recorded that the temple at Jerusalem had a natural spring of water that welled from its interior. Again, these references could only be describing the Gihon Spring. It is located close to what is referred to as the Ophel, which is a bulge of the earth abutting the City of David (Zion) laying just to the south, and roughly about 1,000 feet, from the Temple Mount. There are no springs, however, on top of the Temple Mount. A spring is crucial for the true temple locale. “A fountain shall flow from the house of the Lord...” (Joel 3:18). In Ezekiel it reads,

“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the alter. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water running out on the right side.”

Ezekiel 47:1-2 NKJV

There are other Hebrew writings cited in a book by Zev Vilnay that also mention by name the Gihon Spring area as the place for the future temple. “…At that time a great stream shall flow forth from the Holy Temple and its name is Gihon.”

THE THRESHING FLOOR—PAST AND FUTURE According to the Bible (as referenced previously in 2 Chronicles

3:1), the threshing floor is, in effect, the anchor point for the temple. It was in the area of the Gihon Spring. It also seems to be close to where the angel of the Lord stepped in to abort Abraham’s attempt to sacrifice his son. A future judgment will occur on this ancient, missing threshing floor where a new temple will be built. It is where Jesus will rule and reign. This judgment will be the separating of the wheat (those who are forgiven) and the chaff (those who are not forgiven). In Matthew 3:12 we read a chilling foretelling of this fact: “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” In this verse, the barn represents heaven—a perfect destination. However, according to Scripture, if you are a person who rejects the Lord, then you are essentially...toast!

The Temple Mount is considered to be the historic place of Solomon’s and Herod’s temple. Muslims call it the Harm al-Sharif, the place from which Mohammed went to heaven on his horse named Barack. Even though the Temple Mount is in the most holy site of the Jews and situated right in the middle of Israel it is also solely in the administrative control of Muslims. Jews desperately want to take control of the place, as well as rebuild their temple there. Muslims on-the-other-hand relay a stern warning that if a Jew ever puts one shovel to their professed holy site a war may follow.

It may be surprising to some, but in the fourth century, people were trying to find the lost sites of the former temples of Solomon and Herod. They simply did not know where the temple sites were placed. In 70 AD the temple was completely and utterly uprooted by the Romans, thus fulfilling Christ’s prophesy that not one stone would be standing upon another there.

But the politically and religiously intolerant leaders of first-century Israel hated Him. So they murdered Him. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Not by a long shot.

TRUSTING GOD IN THE DARKNESS:

PART 3

God continually tests our faith to see if we trust Him. He continually asks us: Will you hope in Me when the unthinkable happens in your life? Will you, like Moses, hold up the Word of God when the enemy advances, or will you drop the Word and let the

enemy come in like a flood?

Psalm 81 tells us that if we call on the Lord (if we trust Him and if we hope in Him) when we are in trouble He will answer us in the secret place of thunder. Do we believe Him? Will we trust Him in our difficult times?

As we mentioned in last month’s newsletter, this secret place of thunder can be compared to the Valley of Baca or the Valley of Tears in the Old Testament. The Valley of Baca was known for its difficult terrain, its barrenness and its black shadows. Psalm 84 tells us that the faithful pilgrims who made it through the darkness of this valley, were able to turn the whole frightening experience around and make it into a “well of blessing.” Scripture says that as a result, they went from “strength (in the Lord) to more strength (in the Lord).”

In this new series of articles on the subject of “hope,” we will explore the basic question in all of our minds: How do we, in our most difficult times, “Lay hold of the hope that is before us”? (Hebrews 6:18)

Darkness from AboveThe Valley of Baca and the Place of Thunder are among the many

places in the Bible that speak about darkness. Darkness means an absence of light. In various contexts, darkness can mean something sinister, but there is also a darkness (an absence of light) that God allows. Listen to Isaiah 50:10: “Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of His servant that walketh in darkness

and hath no light? Let him trust in the Name if the Lord and stay upon his God.” Notice that the person being spoken of here not only “fears the Lord” but also “obeys His voice.” Consequently, this Scripture is talking about a believer who is faithful and obedient. And yet, it says this saint still walks in darkness and has no light.

And, it’s so true. Many of the trials that God allows into our lives come with an absence of light, i.e., they are absolutely confusing, bewildering and perplexing. Scripture sometimes calls them “the fire of testing.” Psalm 66, for example, speaks about this and says that this is the time that God proves us and tests us as silver. If we understand what He is doing and how we are to endure the darkness and the fire, then we will come out as “gold” in the end. So, yes, God often allows darkness, afflictions and difficulties, but only with the purpose of renewing our strength and turning our difficult times into “wells of blessing.”

The Presence of God in the DarknessIt’s interesting because many, many Scriptures throughout the

Bible associate God’s presence with darkness and “a thick cloud.” Consider Exodus 19:9, where God says to Moses: “Lo, I come to thee in a thick cloud.” And Exodus 34:5: “And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him.” And Exodus 40:38: “…for the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day and the fire was on it by night.” Even in the New Testament, John 12:29 says: “they heard the

thunder in the cloud,” speaking of God’s voice, and they were fearful. (Luke 9:34)

These Scriptures seem to suggest that God’s presence is simply obscured in darkness, so we must not think of “darkness” in itself as being something bad or fearful or scary. (Exodus 20:21; 2 Chronicles 6:1;Psalm 97:2) It’s simply one of the ways that God manifests Himself.

Even in Solomon’s Temple, the Scriptures say that the Holy Place was so filled with the cloud of God’s presence that the priests were unable to minister. (1 Kings 8:10-11)

Consequently, it’s important to understand that many of the times we are walking “closest to the Lord,” we will experience His presence in the form of a cloud or darkness.

Just as the saints in the Valley of Baca and the Valley of the Shadow of Death experienced darkness, shadows and the cloud of His presence on their way to worshiping, we will often experience the same. But even in our darkness, He is always there. He promises never to leave us nor forsake us.

I do not believe, however, that God causes these night seasons or our valleys of Baca experiences; He just allows them and then uses them for His purposes. It’s in the middle of these times that He asks us, “Do you trust Me?”

Trusting Him in the Dark TimesIf you read the book of Job, you’ll see that Job talks a lot about

trusting God in the darkness, blackness and the shadow of death. For example Job 19:8–10, he speaks to God by saying: “You [speaking about the Lord] have fenced up my way and set darkness in my path. You have stripped me of my glory. I am gone. You have removed my hope like a tree.” (It’s interesting to me that Job associates darkness here with the loss of hope.)

But even in our darkness, He is always

there. He promises never to leave us nor

forsake us.

Just like many of us have made previous commitments to trust our lives to the Lord (in fact, we’ve probably done this many, many times before), but because everything continued to go “haywire” in our situations, we finally gave up and lost hope. God in His Love for us, however, returns later and once again asks: “Will you trust Me in the darkness this time? Will you hope in Me now? Will you once again rely upon Me?” This happens over and over and over again, until we finally get the message and learn to trust and hope in a Father whom we don’t always see, whom we don’t always understand and whom we don’t always know what He is doing. (Isaiah 55:8–9)

One thing I have personally learned over the last few months is that, for me it’s easier to “trust God” going through difficult, emotional day to day circumstances than it is to trust Him going through constant physical pain. Pain wears you down and can become unbearable at times. When it first begins, you choose to trust the Lord; but when it doesn’t go away, you often give up and let go. And, if you don’t know His Word by heart and haven’t memorized His promises, it becomes very difficult to hold on.

What I have learned is that it’s vitally important not only to be in the Word every day, but also to memorize God’s promises so that if you are “taken out,” as I was, you can still, by faith, hold on. You can

still, by faith, trust Him in the dark and you can still, by faith, see His handprint. Yes, it’s physically dark, but spiritually it’s light.

The Most Important ScriptureLast night as I was preparing for bed, the Lord brought to my

mind the Scriptural answer as to “how” we can see the Lord in the midst of our dark seasons. Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Notice that if we trust in the Lord and if we acknowledge Him, then He will direct our paths.

...it’s vitally important not only to be in the Word every day, but also to memorize God’s promises...

Now this doesn’t mean we emotionally “feel like” trusting Him or that we “mentally adhere” to saying “I trust You,” but that we simply “choose by faith to trust Him.” That faith-trust choice then leads to “acknowledging” Him in all our ways. The word “acknowledge” in this Scripture means to “see Him right in the middle of our situation.” Like Moses did in Hebrews 11:27, he saw and acknowledged the Lord right in the middle of the darkness.

The way this works is that: if we are a cleansed vessel, and if we have chosen to unconditionally trust in God’s faithfulness (acknowledge Him), it then frees God to perform His will in our situation, allowing us to see His Hand of Love and giving us the strength we need to endure the trial.

A Personal Example:On one of my lowest days recently, I received a “love gift” from

someone I have never met. It was a book on Zechariah called “The Prophet of Hope.” This book was written in 1916, almost a hundred years ago. What the sender didn’t realize is that the very night before I received his gift, God had directed me to the book of Zechariah and the story of hope that it entails.

When I read the inscription the sender had written in the book, I wept because I knew the whole experience had God’s fingerprints all over it. I had never read Zechariah in that context before, nor did I realize that Zechariah was called ‘the prophet of hope.”

Was it a coincidence? Or, was it a real experience of seeing God’s Handprint at that very critical time in my life. To me, it was God’s way of saying “I love you. I am with you. You can make it through.” That little experience “allowed me to see God’s faithfulness” in the midst of my most difficult trial.

When I read the inscription the sender

had written in the book, I wept because I knew the whole experience

had God’s fingerprints all over it.

So, remember, “to acknowledge Him” simply means to see Him in the little things. And this is what will give us the endurance to persevere on. Again, if we trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all our ways, then He will direct our paths. However, it also works the other way around: If we cease to trust Him, and we don’t acknowledge Him in all our ways, then He will be unable to direct our paths.

What this is saying is that we can never stop hoping in the Lord no matter what our circumstances are, no matter how we feel and no matter if we understand what He is doing or not. Even if we don’t see His hand, we must continually choose by faith to trust in His promises and acknowledge Him in all our ways, because He will come through…

Dr. Chuck Missler’s newest ongoing Bible study on the Book of 1 Corinthians.“The city of Corinth was a major influence throughout that part of the world in every respect, including it becoming an idiom for fornication (which, of course, became idiomatic for the entire gentile culture). When I teach this book in America, I can’t resist calling it “1st Californians. Unfortunately, the epithet is justified.”

BIO

The apostle Paul encouraged the Ephesian church by telling them, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”1 In a sense, when we put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour we are like clay in the hands of the Master Potter. He shapes us into vessels of honour2 in order to be used for His glory. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he makes reference to our good works. What kind of works on our part could Paul be referring to if the work of our salvation is completed in Christ? Jesus also makes reference to our “good works” when He says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”3 What good works could Jesus be referencing in His proclamation?

The last commandment of Jesus before His ascension was for His disciples to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”4 Paul challenged the Corinthian Christians by saying, “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”5 What is the role of an ambassador? 1 Ephesians 2:8-102 2 Timothy 2:20,213 Matthew 5:164 Mark 16:155 2 Corinthians 5:20

An ambassador knows whom he represents, he knows his commission, and he serves as a leader among leaders to represent the interests of his King. As ambassadors for Christ we have been given a clear commission to represent and communicate the messages from our ruling King, Jesus Christ, to others. How can we effectively accomplish this task?

The Bible tells us that for the message of salvation to be complete, Man must first understand the existence and character of God. Therefore, the road to the salvation of mankind begins with the exploration of the ultimate truth of the existence of God. The beginning of a person’s reconciliation with God is their recognition of God.

Knowing the KingThe English author C. S. Lewis

wrote, “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”6 The Christian faith is not a simple, private experience of personal interpretations or impressions. It is a serious, public exhibition of a worldview that is based on a belief system which has a foundation of truth that can be examined by an enquiring world.7 Christianity does not ask its followers to take a blind leap of faith into the intellectual abyss, but rather presents a perfectly rational response to the evidence surrounding us, within the world of science and through insightful discoveries from the Bible.

Knowing God should be the highest pursuit of every person. What could be more important than to discover God and thereby discover the purpose for our lives? How important is it to find out 6 C. S. Lewis, “Mere Christianity”7 1 Peter 3:15

that He is not hidden; to follow the hallmarks of design to the throne room of the Designer; to catch a glimpse of His greatness; to discover that the overarching attribute of God is love;8 and to arrive at a place where we discover that we are the ultimate object of God’s eternal love?9

Paul’s prayer for the saints at Ephesus pretty much sums up the greatness of this quest.

“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”10

Ephesians 3:14-19 NKJV

Serving the KingThe Bible tells us that believing in the Gospel requires hearing the

Gospel first. The apostle Paul wrote to the Roman Christians saying, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!’”11 Sadly, today, the percentage of the world that is hearing the Christian Gospel is getting smaller and smaller.

Preaching is one of the simplest forms of verbal communication. Where teaching can be defined as “explanation” thus sometimes requiring substantial preparation, preaching is simply “declaration.” Paul instructed the Corinthian Church, “For since, in the wisdom

of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.”12 For example, if you discovered that your local superstore was having a one-day sale on an item that previously was too expensive to consider, your natural response to the discovery of this good news would be to tell as many of your friends as possible, so they could enjoy the benefit with you. How much more important is the Gospel message before a world lost in darkness and without hope?

The apostle Paul then points out that every Christian has been given the “ministry of reconciliation.” “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”13 Thus we can fulfil the command of the Great Commission by preaching the “word of reconciliation” to an unbelieving world.

The Message from the KingThe message of salvation is clearly laid out in the Bible.

The commission for Christ’s ambassadors is great.14 For salvation, Man must first understand the existence and character of God,15 then the purpose and power of the Bible,16 the person of Jesus Christ,17 and the nature of Man.18

This awareness prepares Man for the message of the Gospel.19 Being confronted with a holy and just God should cause sinful Man, who is deserving of God’s judgment, to naturally seek a way of salvation. In subsequent articles I will unpack the message of the ambassador of Christ, thus giving a clear understanding of the message delivered under “The Ambassador’s Mandate.”

STUDY TOGETHER

The KI Resident Study Program - Take the Bible Seriously!Journey through the whole Bible with Dr. Chuck Missler and other special speakers as you gather valuable insights into God’s “integrated message system that is from outside our time domain.”Koinonia Institute offers a unique opportunity in the centre of North Island, New Zealand. Each residential student will:

• Participate in a guided classroom environment that will be comprised of lectures, open discussions, and testing,

• Live communally with other students in the beautifully isolated grounds of The River Lodge in Reporoa, Bay of Plenty on the banks of the Waikato River, and

• Grow individually in their knowledge of the Bible so they can gain the maximum benefit of this intensive preparation experience.

Accelerated and Long Term courses available.
