WP BOWLS - A GREAT FUTURE AWAITS!

The campaign started off with trials spread over three weekends under the watchful eyes of the WPB Selectors. With great excitement the two teams were announced:
What an absolute privilege and honour it was to be the manager of the WPB U30 teams that participated in the rst ever BSA U30 Inter District Championship!

Everyone involved was convinced that with the quality of players and the mix of experience and up-and-coming talent, we were up for it to do well at the tournament.

Lovely accommodation awaited us on arrival and after we settled in, we went down to Maritzburg West BC to register and get acquainted with the surroundings. A roll-up on the greens was not possible, due to heavy rains throughout the day.
WP - A’S JOURNEY
And so, the next day, the rst of seven round robin matches started for the Orange (WP-A) and Green (WP-B) sections.

The next game against Eastern Province-A was a tight affair, but the team pulled through adding 3.5 valuable points to their tally.
The penultimate game of this round, against Gauteng North-B, was a real tough fought battle. It must be said that the team played well, but that their opponents just played better at crucial stages of the game, resulting in picking up only 1 point.
Before the start of the last round robin game, there was only 1 point separating the top three teams in this section and who could have thought how things will pan out to determine

Port Natal-B were playing, top of the log, Gauteng North-B – winning the rsts skin and peeling the second. Port Natal-B kept on the pressure and were on their way to knock-out the leaders – being 3 shots up with the last end to play, leaving Gauteng North-B

Boland-A and was comfortably in front – 5 points (almost) in the bag and a ticket to the play-offs. But then, having won the rst 2 skins and leading comfortably, Boland-A showed some resilience by winning the last skin, leaving WP-A picking up 4 points – half a point short of l e ve l l i ng ( and w i t h a be t t e r aggregate) with the eventual section winners, Gauteng North-B.
One can say that it was a roller coaster
WP - B’S JOURNEY
Maybe not as close as WP-A's campaign, this team impressed by their resilience and will to ght.
WPBA's youth section is alive and well. It's up to all within the district to encourage and develop them into the top bowlers they are to be.
To the teams: We boarded this plane together and took off and kept the ight on a steady course, as be intended – next time we must just work on a softer landing. I salute you!!
To conclude – WPB can be very proud of our players' performance and behaviour on and off the greens. This is emphasized and proven by the fact t h a t t h e N a t i o n a l S e l e c t o r s approached me for information from almost the whole team – as you will agree - an absolute honour!

BELLVILLE BOWLS CLUB – ANNUAL SPRING TOURNAMENT 2018 Barrie Eksteen
Since its inception in 2016, we have always had a full eld of 24 teams and this year was no exception, with a waiting list already building up two months before the start of the tournament.
Bellville Bowls Club recently hosted their very popular annual Spring Tournament on the weekend of 6/7 October 2018.
The tournament was played in glorious summer weather and as usual the sportsmanship and camaraderie among the players was infectious.
We once again had some great sponsors in Western Cape Fleet M a n a g e m e n t , D a r l i n g W i n e s , Loewenstein Motors, Graham Altman, Willem Pretorius, Fine & Country and Varsity College which ensured that everybody who participated, received a prize. Eventually we handed out R24000 worth of prizes, with R15000 in cash going to the top teams. As part of the fun, teams had to pick
names for themselves and although it was difcult to select a winning name, The Guptas eventually stole the show.

In a nail biting nish the team of Johnny, Megan and George defeated the Bellville Boykies (Schalk, Adré and Raysford) to win this year's rst prize.

To celebrate the anniversary a range of events have taken place including a Ladies High Tea, a 70's Party, a Pub Quiz, and a Cocktail party. Still to come is a DBC Talent Show and an Over 70's All Day competition. A beautiful 70th anniversary shirt has also been designed.
Durbanville Bowling Club, or DBC as it is known, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. For any sport club and especially a bowling club, it is a truly remarkable achievement.

A WPCC team, skipped by Brad van Beuge, shot to the top of the scoreboard after a great result on the nal day. Congrats manne! Mowbray were looking like the favourites for a while. Big thank you for the loyal sponsorship from Rooiberg Winery. Teams are now in the Constantia Valley competing for the next midweek title. Old Oak Business League set off at a cracking pace and the Zandvliet sponsorship was very well received. With four rounds to go on consecutive Wednesdays the competition can only get tougher. One of the many positive spinoffs of the business league is an increase in corporate bookings and team building events. Companies experience the fun of bowls and recognise the potential of bowls for these type of functions. Your club can create a win-win by running a business league and exposing more people and potential members through subsequent corporate book ings . Recent l y a regu lar participant organisation of the business league treated staff and clients to a fun day of bowls.
