Personal Learning Environments - a concept based on Web 2 .0 and social software.

Web 2.0:

"A perceived second-generation of Web-based services

such as social networking sites, wikis, communication

tools, and folksonomies that emphasize online

collaboration and sharing among users"

WHAT IS A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?

Page 4: Personal learning environment5

learning network is a group of persons who create, share, support and study learning resources (“units of learning”) in a specific knowledge domain.

“Personal Learning Environments are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to:

* set their own learning goals * manage their learning; managing both content

and process * communicate with others in the process of

learning and thereby achieve learning goals.” http://octette.cs.man.ac.uk/jitt/index.php/Personal_Learning_Environments

PERSONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Stage 1 Immersion Create any and all networks you can find where there are people and ideas to connect to.

Stage 2 EvaluationEvaluate your networks and start to focus in on which networks you really want to focus your time on.

Stage 3 Know it allRealize there is much you do not know and feel like you can’t disconnect.

STAGES OF PERSONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT ADOPTION

Page 10: Personal learning environment5

Stage 4 PerspectiveUsually comes when you are forced to leave the network for awhile and spend time with family and friends who are not connected.

Stage 5 BalanceUnderstanding that you can not know it all, and begin to understand that you can rely on your network to learn and store knowledge for you.

Persistence“The reflective posting of a blog are a digital

record of the learning process. They can be an integral part of the lifelong learning accomplishment and e-portfolio of the learner. They should not disappear at the end of a course.”

Identity

“Learners have existences beyond formal school, that can be used to both help learners contextualize their own understanding and for others to understand their epistemological legacy. The PLE tools integrate this outside life with formal study.”

“Copyright and re-use: Contributions to a PLE are very definitely owned by the learner and thus can be used and re-used as that owner sees fit.” - Terry Anderson.

More and more, we will see students – and not instructors or publishers – authoring learning resources.

We don't.By embracing a Web 2.0 approach to learning

objects, we can allow academic staff to

support learners on a much more individual

basis through new communication channels.

How do we manage the long tail in education?
