TEACHING INNOVATIONS

WebCT and Blackboard. Instituted the use of WebCT for all courses in Fall 2007. Streamlined the use of handouts, assignments, and facilitated peer conversations between students on course subject matter. This innovation allowed students in research courses to more effectively create survey research instruments and collaborate in statistically analysis and application.

Sociology Senior Seminar - Fall 2006. The course focused on interracial marriage and the primary data collected through a national study that I am conducting. The class was assembled into four groups and developed a research design for assessing an aspect of interracial marriage based on the study questionnaire. The groups completed a research paper and presented the findings in a formal setting at the end of the course. The research papers were crafted into Sociology Senior Seminar Interracial Marriage Proceedings - December 2006.

Theory Building and Methodology - 2005. Developed this graduate level course to bridge the issues of theory building (use of concepts and variables as part of middle range theory) and methodology for master’s and Ph.D. level students. The course is invaluable for assisting graduate students in the development of theory that can be tested empirically either through quantitative or qualitative approaches.

Computer Presentations, 2002 - to present. Use of computer software and presentation of statistical analysis in the classroom to assist students in SOC 3313 and SOC 3323 relative to using the computer program. Primarily SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is demonstrated in the classroom environment. This procedure links students and instructor, thereby improving student ability to complete research based assignments and papers.

Use of General Social Survey (GSS) Internet site for downloading National Opinion Research Center (NORC) data for class usage. Allowed students to learn how to use internet interfacing for conducting secondary data analysis.

Powerpoint Presentation, 2000. Developed power point presentation for the SOC 1013 course (Introduction to the Study of Society). All notes and statistical tables and graphs are in presentation form. The computer projection presentations enhance the student's ability to understand and conceptualize the subject matter.

Slides and Transparencies, 1993- present. Developed and used overhead transparencies to present statistical tables, modeling, key terms, and concepts presentations. These were invaluable in aiding students with respect to understanding critical aspects of the SOC 3313 and SOC 3323.

Survey Questionnaire Development and Administration, 1993 - present. Students in SOC 3323 develop questions and administer them through telephone surveying over the duration of the course. Typically sample sizes are between 350-400 individuals. This allows the student to link research design and statistical analysis. Additionally, these survey databases are used by students in SOC 3313 to enhance their analytical development.

Practical Application Research Projects. In the Public Policy Evaluation and Affirmative Action Policy courses, students are assigned groups and expected to complete research projects with a public entity. Students in the evaluation course assessed two different policy initiatives within the Administrative Division at Bexar County and provided recommendations to the county commissioners in 1991.

In the affirmative action course, students evaluated, performed statistical analysis of wage differences, and revised the VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority Affirmative Action Plan in 1993.
