PERSONAL BRANDING

Your Brand Exists In The Mind Of Others! …. But It’s Your Job To Define And Market Your Brand.

Personal branding is not new—the concept was first introduced in 1997 by William Bridges in his book, Creating You and Company. In 1999 Tom Peters published The Brand You 50. Careers have changed: a generation or two ago you could get an entry level job with a company and work your way up until it was time to retire. One career; one company. Transportation Analogy Today “They” aren’t in charge of your career—and by extension your life—any more. You are. Welcome to the age—if you’re smart—of brand you!

It is no longer enough to meet the requirements of the job — you need to differentiate yourself!

WHAT IS a personal brand?—Your Unique Promise of Value. An effective brand statement should

Consist of one sentence

Be understandable by a 12 year old The branding process starts with knowing yourself. .. Defining your brand helps you to clarify and communicate what makes you stand out. When you understand the elements of your brand you can use your brand to:

Manage your career

Increase your confidence

Make better career choices

Elevate your visibility

Make a mark on your organization as a team member

Successful personal brands are not created but uncovered. You need to understand and define your talents, skills, value, and brand attributes

Define yourself in six adjectives. (Then ask 6 people)

MESSAGE (ORGANIZATION) CHART

Use an organization chart to develop your qualifications overview / summary, your 60 second sound byte and your two minute “elevator” speech (i.e. your sales pitch!).

At the top of the chart is YOU; your message.

The next level contains your skills, abilities, talents, etc.

The third tier is where you list your “stories” (i.e. accomplishment examples) to describe each of the skills.
