FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA
Viva Cristo Rey! José Sánchez del Río was born in 1913 to a Catholic family in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico. He was a normal boy in many ways, but he also developed a strong devotion to Jesus and to Our Lady of Guadalupe. In the 1920’s, when he was 12, the Mexican government persecuted the Catholic Church by seizing church property, closing Catholic churches and schools, and even executing priests. Many Mexican Catholics took up weapons against the government soldiers and fought against them for the freedom of the Church. They were called the Cristeros. When José was 13, he begged his mother to let him join the Cristeros, but his mother said he was too young. He told his mother, “Mama, do not let me lose the opportunity to gain heaven so easily and so soon.” He was finally allowed to join the Cristero Army as the one who carried their flag into battle. When José was 14, he was captured by the government soldiers and kept in prison where they treated him very badly. His family brought him food to eat, and they also secretly brought him Holy Communion, which helped him to be strong in his faith. The soldiers kept hurting the young boy and they demanded
that he curse Jesus. But he remained loyal to his faith. Finally they cruelly cut the bottoms of his feet many times and made him walk barefoot to the cemetery on February 10, 1928. Along the way, they kept telling him that he could go free if he said, “Death to Christ.” But he refused. They marched him to a grave that had been dug for him and gave him one last chance to deny Christ. Instead he shouted, “Viva Cristo Rey” (“Long live Christ the King”) and he was killed. In 2008, a Mexican woman named Paulina Galvez gave birth to her daughter Ximena Guadalupe. When Ximena was only 4 months old, she became very, very sick. One day the doctors told her mother that 90% of the baby girl’s brain had been destroyed and she would probably not live for more than 3 days. But the mother was from the same town in Mexico where José Sánchez del Río had lived. She asked his intercession for her daughter. Within two days, her daughter was almost totally healed and even the doctors said it was a miracle. Both Ximena and her mother are pictured here at a shrine to St. José Sánchez del Río. Ximena is totally healthy! On October 16, 2016, in part due to this miracle, Pope Francis declared that José Sánchez del Río is a saint in heaven! May this young saint, who generously gave his life for his faith, inspire all of us to honor Jesus in our hearts as the King of all Kings. May we be vigilant in protecting religious liberties and the right to practice our faith without unjust restrictions. St. José Sánchez del Río, pray for us.
Viva Cristo Rey! Viva Santa María de Guadalupe!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members
of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and
physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing
presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make
broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special
people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through Lord Jesus who healed
those who believed. Amen

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fuelled by the power of social media and collaboration.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. Please consider #supportingYOUR-ministries so that we may continue spreading the Good News to our seven counties.

Santo Tomas More
¡Viva Cristo Rey!
¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva Santa María de Guadalupe!
