LETTER FROM THE CHAIRS

Welcome to the Women of Tocqueville 10th Anniversary Celebration presented by PwC. Tonight, we honor and celebrate our Women of Tocqueville founding members, past chairs, steering committees and current members for their role in creating this dynamic and impactful organization. In addition, it is with great excitement that we recognize a remarkable and outstanding Women of Tocqueville founding member, this year’s 2018 J. Erik Jonsson recipient, Lyda Hill. As you will hear tonight, these accomplished and passionate women volunteer their time to promote literacy through reading to children. They encourage higher education and overall health through mentoring young women. They travel to Austin and Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of those who have no voice. They give generously to United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, supporting programs that lift our citizens up - benefitting our entire city. They are the mighty, mighty Women of Tocqueville. Our members remain committed to the mission of creating an inclusive network of women leaders aligned to give, advocate and volunteer in support of the community through the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. As we gather to celebrate tonight, let us reflect on all that has been accomplished over the past 10 years, and set our sights forward to focus on all that remains to be achieved in the years ahead. The legacy of the mighty Women of Tocqueville shines bright in North Texas. Established in 2007, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ Women of Tocqueville is an inclusive network of business and community leaders committed to bringing their vision and financial resources to raise funds for United Way’s Community Impact priorities.

In honor of their 10th anniversary, Women of Tocqueville members have established the Women of Tocqueville Fund for Women and Children at The United Way Foundation of Metropolitan Dallas. This endowment fund ensures that United Way has a regular and predictable funding stream to respond to the needs of North Texas’ women and children in perpetuity. Contributions to the fund also count toward the $100 million Unite Forever campaign, launched in 2015 by United Way Foundation of Metropolitan Dallas to secure ongoing support for United Way’s work in the community today and in the future.

WOMEN OF TOCQUEVILLE FUND FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The Women of Tocqueville Fund for Women and Children will provide an annual distribution to United Way of Metropolitan Dallas for programs that empower women and children in our community. They include programs with a focus on such areas as:

• Educating mothers on the importance of early learning.• Encouraging girls to explore careers in STEM.• Providing girls opportunities to learn and grow after school and in the summer months.• Protecting women and children from violence.• Ensuring women have access to necessary and preventive health care services.• Empowering women with the job skills they need to support their families.

UNITE FOREVER CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORSUNITE FOREVER CAMPAIGN

Established in 1999, the United Way Foundation of Metropolitan Dallas campaign was created for the sole purpose of supporting the programs and activities of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Gifts to the Foundation’s endowment are invested in perpetuity, with earnings and interest distributed annually. To secure this future, United Way and the Foundation launched the $100 million Unite Forever campaign. Our goal is simple and far-reaching—establish permanent funding for United Way that will provide a more predictable, sustainable, and stable future in order to: withstand economic and annual fund fluctuations in the existing three-year grant process; grow our ability to invest in strategic partnerships and creative advancements outside the three-year grant cycle; and offer the flexibility needed to fund new and emerging community-wide solutions for the unseen needs of the future.

Lyda Hill, is a Dallas entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the only single woman to make the 2013 Philanthropy list of most generous donors. She currently serves as president of LH Holdings, a real estate, tourism and venture investment firm, and is the namesake of the Lyda Hill Foundation, which is dedicated to making transformational advances in nature and science research and improving local communities.

Miss Hill’s varied career reflects business savvy, entrepreneurial vigor, and a commitment to balancing profit with purpose. She began her career in 1967 when she founded Hill World Travel, which quickly became the largest travel agency in Dallas and was one of the largest in the country when it was sold in 1982. She subsequently served as president of Seven Falls near Colorado Springs, a series of seven

cascading waterfalls that has been called, “The Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado.” She later developed and constructed the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center, also in Colorado Springs. She continued her business pursuits in 1990 with a significant investment in the award-winning Fort Worth Stockyards, an historic tourist and shopping area highlighting the city’s heritage.

Believing that ‘science is the answer,’ Miss Hill followed her lifelong passion for game-changing life sciences investments – a deeply personal mission heightened by a battle with breast cancer. Among myriad initiatives, she founded the Oklahoma Breast Care Center, and funded and launched Remeditex Ventures, a venture capital fund that invests in early biomedical research by universities and health care institutions designed to take promising scientific advances to the marketplace quickly. In recent years, Miss Hill has focused her life sciences philanthropic efforts on a number of other game-changing advances. Chief among her gifts are a $50 million pledge to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Moon Shots Program which aims to combat and eliminate cancer, a $20 million grant to her alma mater, The Hockaday School, to fund a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program, a $4 million and $2 million pledge to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the Center for BrainHealth, to help military service members and veterans recover from traumatic brain injuries, as well as grants to fund a variety of environmental/marine conservation efforts being conducted by the Nature Conservancy and Pew Charitable Trusts.

Also a patron of projects designed to revitalize communities near and dear to her heart, Miss Hill has been instrumental in the funding and development of, among other things, Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.

As part of her desire to leave a lasting mark on society, Miss Hill became a member of The Giving Pledge in 2010. The Pledge, created by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet, is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals/families to dedicate a majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Miss Hill has pledged to donate the entirety of her wealth to charity, the bulk of which she plans to do during her lifetime.

In addition to her monetary gifts, countless nonprofit organizations have benefitted from Miss Hill’s leadership, including the Visiting Nurses Association, the Dallas Chapter of the World Presidents’ Organization, the Crystal Charity Ball, the Junior League of Dallas, the Dallas and Texas Chapters of the American Heart Association, and Easter Seals of North Texas. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the prestigious President’s Volunteer Action Award and an appointment on President Ronald Reagan’s Advisory Council on Private Sector Initiatives for a project she launched in the 1980s called The Volunteer Connection. This enormously successful project, created to promote volunteerism in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, has since been duplicated in 70 cities nationwide.

Miss Hill attended the Hockaday School, an all-girl school in Dallas, from 1952 to 1960. She entered Stanford University in 1960 but soon left to attend Hollins University, a small liberal arts college for women in Virginia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

The J. Erik Jonsson Award was created by the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ Board of Directors in 1978 in honor of one of the city’s greatest leaders. Mr. Jonsson, whose vision and leadership can be seen across Dallas, was a co-founder and the first president of Texas Instruments and served as Mayor of Dallas for four terms. He also co-founded United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Mr. Jonsson built the foundation for an organized system of funding needed for health and human services through the private sector, marshalling support of the corporate community and its leadership. This legacy continues today as United Way of Metropolitan Dallas continues to change lives in North Texas through education, income, and health.
