Permaculture Zoning relates to where you place things in relationship to how much energy is needed to look after something or work an area of land.

Zone one is always closest to the house

it contains those elements such as plants and animals that need great care and protection, things that need many visits a day, such as seedlings, salad vegetables and herbs. It also has all the human friendly elements such as ponds, a pool, a barbecue and outdoor furniture.

Zone two is a little further out

It is where we keep things we check on just once a day or less. Such as an orchard where work and production comes and goes at different times of the year. A main crop vegetable garden with the bulk carbohydrate plants such as potatoes, corn and pumpkin which all require space

Zone three describes open pasture

for crops or grazing. With Permaculture design we like to focus on soil building practices such as crop rotation and direct seeding.  Cell grazing for animals and planning for several different animal types, as they graze grasses to different heights and favour different plant species.

Zone four is the tree zone

rees with a purpose. We always aim for a mixture of species in these areas, as diversity mimics natures stability.
