Why:• Low Organic Matter Soils = 1.5% - 3%• Low CEC number• Low Water Holding Capacity• Low Nutrient Levels• Intensive Production = 3-4 crops per yearHow can I change this? Fast!
How ?• Tried making commercial grade compost . . .
– 5 days at 110+ to get weed and disease free . . . – Lots of turning = tractors– Lots of spreading = more tractors
• Town of DeMotte was looking for a site to dump leaves . . . • I heard leaves could be a negative soil amendment, but for free . . .
– Relatively weed free– Not trash free . . .
• Leaf sheet composting . . . – In areas not going to production for 1-2 years
• ½ - 3 inches = not cover grass to thickly– Pay someone to spread in 2 hours for 4 acres.
• Cold Compost = Turn once a year for 3 years . .– For water holding and stable OM
