TransitionOver the next months,Karen Chigounis will beworking closely with AlanWilloughby in preparationfor transitioning as theInterim Executive Directorin early 2016. As a part ofthis transition, both Karenand Alan thought it wouldbe great to share theNewsletter’s ExecutiveDirector Notes for the nexttwo issues and since “cul-

ture” is an oft used word in both of their vocabularies, they thoughtwhat better place to start than a conversation about culture.

ALAN...I believe everyone knows my background as a potter and my passionfor all things made of clay. While I’ve been the director I’ve oftenreferred to pottery as my therapy, but it will soon become a full timeoccupation upon my departure from Perkins Center. Whether thera-py or occupation, whenever I sit at the potter’s wheel and beginthrowing bowls, an image of two cupped hands flashes before mymind. This conundrum began after I read Philip Rawson’s descriptionin “Ceramics” in which he describes bowls as the three-dimensionalprojections of the cupped hands, making gestures symbolic ofreceiving and/or giving. I just can’t get it out of my mind, cuppedhands and bowls, giving and receiving, throwing bowls and usingbowls.

As I think about it now, I recognize how it parallels my tenure atPerkins Center and what originally drew me to Perkins Center, thatthere was something special here in the culture and the community, combining sustenance and sharing, giving and receiving, bringingme full circle back to the bowls. Recently, a friend spoke of the com-mon sense rule of relationships, describing how loyalty and commit-ment to our friends, colleagues and associates builds strength, respect, reciprocity and community. I thought of Perkins Center and Ithought of all the bowls I have yet to create.

KAREN...In reflecting on Alan’s comments I’m reminded again of one com-pelling reason I came to work at Perkins Center ten years ago. It wasthe culture; Perkins Center’s commitment to and respect for eachperson’s ability to imagine, practice, create and contribute to thecommunity, to the common good. This culture has been crafted andstewarded in Alan’s ‘cupped hands’ over the last 25 years. He has con-sciously built Perkins Center’s community with an inclusive hand, extending our outreach beyond the extraordinary communitieswhere we reside in Moorestown and Collingswood. Perkins Centerhas long and established relationships in Camden City and in themilitary base communities in Pemberton and Browns Mills and inmany towns and schools in between. If we are purposeful, thoughtful and to some extent lucky our workand values will converge. Responsibility and respect, invention andcreation, inclusion and excellence all reside with equal value atPerkins Center for the Arts and I believe we are all the better for that.I am looking forward to taking over the executive leadership uponAlan’s departure and the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned andwhat I value to the task at hand.

29th Annual SummerCampThe arts and environment werebrought together once again dur-ing our annual Summer Arts andEco Camp, Natural Inspirations.During the eight week summerprogram, teaching artists com-bined the arts and environmentaleducation to focus on creativeexpression through visual, per-forming, literary and environmen-tal arts. Campers learned how totake the ideas generated throughexploring the theme, NaturalInspirations, and transform it intoa painting, a play, a song or asculpture. In the classroom, campers engaged in creativity, collaborative teamwork andexpression; while in the Eco-Stu-dio they explored nature, throughgardening, composting andobservation.

Campers enjoyed sculpting claychia pets, choreographing dancesand learning rhythm beatsinspired by the elements, visitsfrom chickens (Cleopatra andSpot), creating master inspiredpaintings, using tile to makemosaic self-portraits and so muchmore! Through our partnershipwith Sustainable Moorestownand the Growing Givers program, every camper planted seeds andraised vegetables to the trans-plant age which will be donatedto community share gardens thatcontribute at least 10% of theiryield to food pantries and shel-ters within Burlington County.

These projects and activities pre-sented campers with the oppor-tunity to make a difference intheir ecological impact on theworld, while making the connec-tion between the arts and envi-ronment.

Perkins Center for the Arts Sum-mer Arts and Eco Camp extends aheartfelt thanks to our fundingpartners and to those who havecontributed to our Camp HeroProgram.
