Periodontal Therapy

2. Moderate periodontal disease is the accumulation of tarter above and below the gum line. Gum tissue is irritated and red with moderate pocketing throughout or localized with bone loss, but stability of teeth. Therapy options would begin with a full-mouth-debridement if the tarter were above gum line preventing from an accurate evaluation of the degree of periodontal activity below the gum line, then an appointment for the scaling and planning would begin. Your mouth is divided up into four sections, called quadrants. These sections could be done in stages, one at a time, two at a time, or all four can be done at once. The best results are obtained with all four quadrants to be done at one appointment, but positive results are obtained however the appointments fit into your time schedule and budget. After the quadrants are completed, a periomaintenance appointment will be set to check the healing and re-evaluate the activity of the periodonal disease. At that appointment, fine scaling, polishing and fluoride treatment will be completed. Also a periomaintenance/recall regimen will be agreed upon between the hygienist and the patient.

3. Severe periodontal disease is where tarter has accumulated above and below the gum line. Gum tissue is irritated, bone levels are greatly decreased and tooth loss is questionable. Therapy options would begin immediately with a full-mouth-debridement and the use of the periodontal therapy kit. A recommendation of aggressive treatment would be all four quadrants of scaling and planning. At that time, further evaluation of tissue health would be assessed. There could be options of tooth extractions and/or surgical intervention with a periodontist. After therapy is completed, a periomaintenance/recall regimen would be agreed upon the hygienist, periodontist, and patient.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease affects the mouth and the entire body. The body is stressed with fighting the infection constantly, suppressing the immune system. Plus there are increased chances of heart disease, stroke, arteriolosclerosis, lung and bronchial infections, upper respiratory problems, etc. Periodontal disease also has effects on diabetes.

As with any therapy/treatment there are steps that can be taken to minimize the progression of the periodontal disease until controllable therapy can be completed. Theses can be discussed with the hygienist and doctor if there is no viable alternative to complete the recommended therapy. It is better to take steps to slow down the progression until full therapy can be attained than to do nothing and loose hope.

1. Mild periodontal disease is where tarter has accumulated above and slightly below your gum line. Gum tissue is irritated and red with minimal pocketing throughout or localized. Therapy options would be to remove tarter with a full-mouth-debridement procedure, followed by the use of the periodontal therapy kit at home. After a week or two, returning for periodontal maintenance therapy appointment. This appointment would be to check the tissue health and the effectiveness of the home therapy kit. Teeth would be fine scaled and polished wit the administration of fluoride. A recommendation of a next hygiene/recall visit will be established between the hygienist and patient at this time.
