  • What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease ranges from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project

  • What is the cause of gum disease? Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Plaque can be removed by brushing, flossing and using mouth rinse on your teeth. If plaque sits on your teeth long enough if hardens into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed without professional tools by a hygienist or dentist. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project

  • Periodontitis When gingivitis is not treated, it turns into periodontitis, which means inflammation around the teeth. Inflammation causes pockets around the tooth that become infected. Plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the bodys natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project
