PERIODONTAL DISEASE LINK WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE (CKD) INCREASES RISK OF FATAL HEART DISEASE According to researchers from Aston's School of Health and Life Sciences, treatment for periodontal disease in sufferers of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) could greatly reduce the possibility of fatal heart disease. CKD is present in about 10% of the adult population and can result in reducing kidney function, raising blood pressure, and can lead to vascular disease, including heart disease. Recent results by Aston reveal that inflammation from periodontal disease in patients with CKD increases the chance of heart disease. It has been found that about 85 percent of the people with CKD have periodontal disease. Aston plans more research, providing some test subjects with periodontal therapy, and comparing them to subjects that don't receive the therapy. Both groups will be tested quarterly to see which group presented the most serious signs of cardiac problems. An article on this story can be read in Dentistry Today online by clicking here . At Clark Family Dental we will continue to make our patients aware of the health risks associated with periodontal disease, and provide treatment for patients
