WARM-UP -- BUDDY TALK (1) How many unpaired “p” electrons are in Se?(write orb not.)
(2) How many valence electrons are in Iodine?
(3) Draw the Lewis Dot structure of Indium
(4) How many “d” electrons are in Silver (Ag)?
(5) What element has an electron configuration ending in 5p3?
(6) How many total electrons are there in the 4th energy level of an atom with an atomic number of 47?
When Finished….check your homework (see next slides)
Objectives For Today
• Define, Discover, and Apply the following trends of the periodic table:
-Electronegativity-Atomic Radius-Ionization Energy
PREPARE TO MOVE
You will be moving to your learning team. Make sure you take the following supplies:
• Chromebook• Notebook• Pencil or Pen• Colored pencils – Red, Green, Purple
What Trends Do You See?WITHIN YOUR LEARNING TEAM:
• Examine the graph on the next slide and describe the following colored lines:• Blue• Purple
• Discuss how you would compare the trend of the blue line to that of the purple line?
Extension: Can you think of anything that would produce the graph of each colored line noted above?
Atomic Radius• Atomic radius is the distance from the center of the
nucleus to the outermost shell that contains electrons
• Think about the orbital rings around the nucleus
Electronegativity
• Electronegativity is a measure of how strongly atoms attract bonding electrons to themselves.
Ionization Energy• The energy required to remove an electron from a
neutral atom *
We will only consider the 1st ionization energy
(energy to remove the 1st electron from an atom)
DISCOVERY OF PERIODIC TRENDS1. Go to www.ptable.com2. Take out today’s handout
Complete the Chart• Go to www.ptable.com
• Click on the “Properties” Tab
• Select the desired elementDIVIDE AND CONQUERStudent 1 – Atomic radius
Student 2 – Ionization EnergyStudent 3 - Electronegativity
Student 4 – Assist others
• When you’ve got ALL the numbers on the chart, go to the next slide.
• * Use 1st ionization energy • ** Use Van Der Waals Radius
Analyze the Data(1) Look at the numbers for atomic radius… what happens to the
number values when you… - Go Across a row (period) ? ______________- Down a column (family)? _____----________
(2) Record the “trend” you discovered at the bottom of the page
(3) What is the anchor element for Atomic Radius (has highest value)?
Record this in your chart.
NOW….repeat steps 1-3 for Ionization Energy and Electronegativity
Check-UpWhen you’ve got the entire page complete, inform
Ms M so she can check your work and stamp your
paper!
YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS INFORMATION!
PERIODIC TREND DEFINE THE TERM WHAT IS THE
TREND ACROSS
PERIODS?
WHAT IS THE
TREND DOWN
GROUPS?
WHAT IS THE
“ANCHOR
ELEMENT”
(HAS GREATEST
VALUE)?
ATOMIC RADIUS
IONIZATION ENERGY
ELECTRONEGATIVITY
What you should have learned….
• Ionization energy: Increases as you get closer to He
• Electronegativity: Increases as you get closer to F
• Atomic Radius: Increases as you get closer to Fr
LET’S PRACTICE:(1)Which has the GREATER RADIUS? P or S
(2)Which has the SMALLER IONIZATION ENERGY?
Ca or Ba
(3) Which as the LARGEST ELECTRONEGATIVITY
P or As
(4) Place the following in order of INCREASING RADIUS…..
C, N, Si
(5) Place the following in order of DECREASING IONIZATION
ENERGY: Ca, S, Cl

Objective• Discover and identify the following
trends of the periodic table:-Electronegativity-Atomic Radius-Ionization Energy-Reactivity of Metals-Reactivity of Nonmetals
Make Some Predictions –Write ‘em on the whiteboard
(1) Which of the following has the LARGEST atomic radius?:Li, Mg, Na
(2) Arrange the following in order of INCREASING electronegativity:
Br, Cl, Ca(3) Arrange the following in order of DECREASING ionization
energy:Se, Cl, Sr
(4) Arrange the following in order of INCREASING atomic radius: Sr , Sr +2 , Ba , Ba +2
Homework1. Once you have completed the on-line question set
you may begin your homework – Unit 3 Periodic Trends
…the worksheet is on the BACK of the chart you completed today.
2. Prepare for BRIEF quiz on the remainder of element names and symbols
UNIT 3 TEST --TUESDAY, OCT 2nd
