Places for lessons fill quickly and there may be waiting lists for some instruments. Get your Performing Arts Tuition form in early to avoid disappointment.
There is very limited availability for out of school lesson times. Some teachers do not give out-of-school lesson times, owing to their other commitments. Preference for these times will go to College students or students with severe learning difficulties.
TACAPS runs a rotating lesson policy for all performing arts lessons in school time so that students do not miss the same lesson each week.
Basic Instrument Overview
WoodwindFluteWoodwind Instrument played by blowing across the tone hole (similar to blowing across a bottle). Uses treble clef. Similar fingering to the recorder. Suits quieter students.
Clarinet, Bass ClarinetWoodwind Instrument that uses a single reed. Very small hands may have difficulty covering the lowerholes. Uses treble clef. Similar to the recorder but not the same fingering. It is quite easy to go from clarinet to saxophone later or play both together when the student is older.

Guidelines for Suitable Performing Arts Lessons
Years 1 & 2TACAPS does not offer Individual Performing Arts lessons to students in the Foundation Class or Kindergarten. Prep Year students receive a 40 minute weekly lesson from our specialist Classroom Music Teacher, which prepares them for learning a musical instrument. Muzik4kidz have lessons which are highly recommended for this age group: www.muzik4kidz.com.au
Students in Year One are only able to have lessons in the Performing Arts after an assessment by their class teacher and the Dean of Lower Primary to see if they are developmentally ready to commence lessons.
Students in Years 1-2 are suited to these Performing Arts Lessons:
Speech and Drama Piano Violin, Viola Cello Voice/Singing Combined Piano/Voice lesson
Year 1 - 2 Morning Melodies concerts are held once a term to enable students to perform for parents, family members and their peers in a supportive and casual environment.
Children in this area of the school are generally too small to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument successfully. They may also not have the strength in their hands required to play guitar.
Year 2 String Program: A Compulsory Program for All Students in Year 2 in 2015
Lessons on violin, viola or cello for the year. Instruments are hired from the school and the fee is placed on the school account. Small group lessons: 3-4 students. Timetabled into the school day and part of the Year 2 Curriculum. Please see the attached Year 2 String Program Information and form.
-
17
TACAPS Year 2 String Program 2015
The Year 2 String Program has been set up to give students in Year 2 the opportunity to play a string instrument in free group lessons for one semester. Students with aptitude or those who wish to continue with lessons, may also have smaller group lessons free of charge in Semester 2.
Instruments available in the program are violin, viola and cello. The teacher is Miss Teresa Brix. The Year 2 String Program will commence in Term 1 for both Year 2 Classes.
Students have a free half hour small group lesson on their instrument each week which is timetabled into the class timetable. There is a Violin Group, Viola Group and Cello Group for each Class. All students in the Year 2 String Program will participate in Morning Melodies Concerts each Term. Students receive a mark on their Report Card for this activity, which includes bringing their instrument and all equipment to lessons each week.
Students are required to hire their instruments through the school at the cost of $60.00 per Term, which is charged to your school account. If a student has access to a violin, viola or cello of the correct size, no fee will be charged. Students will have the cost of a music record book ($8.00) and string tutor book added to their school account. Parents should sign the record book each week.
Some points to remember:
Parents are responsible for paying for any damage to an instrument beyond normal wear and tear. This includes accidental damage and loss of the instrument.
Please do not let other members of the family play the instrument, particularly younger siblings. Violins, violas and cellos are very fragile and we have had accidents with the instruments in the past related to younger siblings, which resulted in replacement of a school instrument.
Students need to practice regularly to achieve success (3-4 short practices a week is recommended to start with, as a minimum time). Students are given a weekly practice chart in their music record book, which is signed by parents each week.
Encourage your child (even if they are making some strange sounds in the beginning).
Keep the instrument out of the sun and do not leave it in a hot car, as it will crack and warp.
Clean the outside of the instrument regularly with a clean soft cloth.
Students are not permitted to change instruments at any time once they have been allocated an instrument.

20
TACAPS Year 3 Music Program 2015
What is it?
The Year 3 Music Program is a chance for students to try an ensemble instrument to see if they like playing this instrument before parents are required to pay for lessons or buy an instrument.
Students will receive a half hour small group lesson free of charge for one year and hire their instrument from the school.
What instruments are involved?
Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums/percussion, acoustic guitar, bass guitar.
Can I choose my childs Instrument?
No, although we do take student preference into consideration. Parents and students may not have experience in all of the listed instruments. There are also physical limitations to playing certain instruments. This is why we do extensive testing to see which instrument will suit your child. For example, there have been students who have been desperate to play the saxophone, but are too small or cannot get a sound out of the instrument.
When does it start?
At the start of Term 1, students will be given melodic and rhythmic aural tests and will be tested with the Instrument Timbre Preference Test, where they listen to different sounds on a recording in order to see which sound of instrument they naturally prefer.
At the start of Term 1, students will try playing the various instruments to see which instrument they are best suited to playing.
The Year Three Music Program will commence group lessons in Week 5 of Term 1.
What does it cost?
Parents are charged a hire fee of $120.00 per semester for the use of an instrument ($60.00 for drums/percussion and acoustic guitars). Students are able to hire an instrument from the school for the school year. This is charged to the students school account.
The cost of a tutor book and music diary will be charged to the students school account.
How much time will playing an instrument take up?
When a student enters the Year 3 Music Program, they are expected to make a commitment to practise their instrument regularly (10-15 minutes a day for 3-4 days per week when they start is usually sufficient). They will progress to more practice as they improve. Of course, the more a student practises, the more proficient they will become on their instrument.
What happens if my child does not practise regularly?
A student who is not practising will quickly fall behind in a group lesson situation and become frustrated (as will the other members of his/her group if they are always being held up by a student who has not done their homework).
If poor practice habits are continually observed, then the student may be asked to leave the program.
-
21
How do I look after a school instrument?
Please help your child to take care of school instruments. They need to be treated very carefully, kept out of extreme temperatures and kept safe from younger and older siblings inquisitive fingers!
Parents are responsible for paying for any damage to an instrument beyond normal wear and tear. This includes accidental damage and loss of the instrument. The instruments are serviced each year in December.
Rules and Regulations
Performing Arts staff will choose the most suitable instrument for your child after testing has been completed. Parents will be notified in writing of the instrument that their child has been allocated in Week 5 of Term 1. There are generally 4-5 students placed on each instrument in the program. Students will be matched with the instrument that will give them the greatest opportunity for success and so that we achieve a balanced band.
If a child has access to a particular instrument at home, then they are able to learn this instrument, provided that they are suited to playing this instrument.
Please keep in mind that although a student may wish to play a trumpet, they may not be musically or physically suited to playing the trumpet. It is also worth noting that there are not boys instruments and girls instruments.
Students are not permitted to change instruments at any time once they have entered the program.
Please complete the attached Permission Form and return to your childs class teacher.

Year 3 - College Students
It is never too late to start learning a musical instrument or commence voice/singing or speech and drama lessons. Students in these parts of the school range from absolute beginners to very advanced students. Our school has many multi-age musical ensembles to cater for all of these levels, allowing students to learn at their own pace.
Year 3 students can perform in Morning Melodies concerts, which are held once a Term. Students from Year 4 to College have the opportunity to perform at Lunchtime Concerts which are also held once a Term and at other school functions. Students in this section of the school are also able to participate in the Eisteddfodau and festivals.

Boarders and Performing Arts
Practice is an essential part of learning a musical instrument. Supervised practice for boarders is compulsory for students learning an instrument/voice. Two sessions are held in the evenings for a small fee ($60.00 per Semester). This fee will be added to your school account. This amount is not refundable if a child stops lessons during the semester.
All Boarding students will automatically be enrolled in Boarder Music Practice.
Students enrolled in Boarder Music Practice attend for 30 minutes, two nights per week. The time and day is determined by boarding staff, according to the boarding program. Students at a more advanced level, or who play 2 or more instruments, are encouraged to use
the Performing Arts Centre Practice Rooms at other times from Monday to Friday: before school from 7.30am-8.30am, at lunch time or after school from 3.30pm-5.00pm.
All boarders require a Library Bag (available from clothing shop) to keep their music, diary and other equipment safe and tidy.
Instruments and music are kept in the Performing Arts Centre, with the exception of Guitars, which are kept in the boarding house.
Boarders need to have their instrument, instrument cases, accessories, library bag and music well-named. Parents should keep a record of the brand and serial number of the instrument. It is also wise to put these instruments on your insurance policy.
New Boarders who have previously had Music lessons should bring all previous music with them so that their new teacher has a starting point in the first few lessons.

Musical Ensembles
Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School has a large number of musical ensembles for students to join. Auditions for musical ensembles are held in the first two weeks of Term 1, 2015. Many students can be rusty on their instruments after the long break, so it is wise to practice a little in the few weeks before school commences. These auditions are not meant to be a stressful occasion, but allow the performing arts staff to place students in the ensemble that best suits their current level of ability. Students should come to school prepared to play a piece that they know well. Students who were in ensembles in 2014 cannot be guaranteed to remain in these ensembles, as there are large numbers of new students who play instruments and current students who have been improving throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child in the Kindergarten and Foundation Class have Private or Paired Performing Arts Tuition? No. However, these students have a class music lesson with a specialist music teacher. We highly recommend muzik4kidz classes for this age group. Book early to avoid disappointment: www.muzik4kidz.com.au
Can my child in Year 1 have Performing Arts Tuition? Yes, but only after an assessment by the Class Teacher and Dean of Lower Primary, to see if your child is developmentally ready.
Can my child have multiple lessons in the Performing Arts? Yes, but please do not overload your child with learning too many instruments if they are a beginner, a new boarding student, or have learning difficulties. Remember that children have to find time to do adequate practice on each instrument that they play. Performing Arts staff members have the right to refuse to teach a child if they believe they are doing too many Performing Arts lessons. Many students do play two or more instruments very successfully if they have aptitude in this area.
Does my child need more than one lesson per week? No. One lesson a week is sufficient.
Do I need to own a piano if my day child is having piano lessons? Yes. Students must have access to a piano or large keyboard at home. Small keyboards are not suitable.
Can my child in Year 1 2 learn a Woodwind, Brass or Percussion Instrument or Guitar? This is not recommended, as children of this age are usually physically too small to play these instruments successfully. Piano is a great instrument to start lessons on.
Can my child have an out-of-school lesson time? Out-of-school lesson times are very limited.
Preference will be given to College students or students with severe learning difficulties. Some teachers do not give any out-of-school lesson times, owing to their other commitments. TACAPS runs a rotating lesson policy for all performing arts lessons in school time so that students do not miss the same lesson each week. If you feel strongly that your child cannot miss class time, then it would be best to arrange for lessons outside the school.
Can I hire an acoustic, electric or bass guitar? No. Students learning these instruments must have their own instrument (with the exception of the Year 3 Music Program).
My child was in the Year 3 Music Program/Year 2 String Program last year. Can I still hire the same instrument this year? Yes, but preference is given to students who have never hired this instrument before. Students are able to go on a waiting list for hire instruments.
My child wants to give up their instrument. What do I do? You need to give a Terms notice in writing to the Director of Performing Arts and pay the full tuition, hire and boarder music practice fees for the remainder of the Semester. It is often worth persevering over the beginners hump. Children often want to give up an instrument when it starts to become challenging; wanting to give up is often only a passing phase and it is worth continuing.
My child in Year 2 or 3 wants to play an instrument. How do I choose? Please refer to our Year 2 String Program and Year 3 Music Program.
Can my child in Year 4 to College learn an instrument if they have never had any music lessons before? Yes. Students can start learning an instrument at any age, regardless of their musical background. We cater for beginners of all ages.
How does my child get into a band or choir? Auditions for all ensembles are held in the first two weeks of Term 1, 2015. All students from the Prep Year to Year 4 are in a Choir. Performing Arts Staff place students in ensembles throughout the year, when they are ready.
If my child has performing arts lessons outside the school, can they be part of the TACAPS Ensembles? Yes, all students at our school have the opportunity to become members of the TACAPS Bands, Orchestras and Ensembles appropriate to their level of skill.

My child wants to learn an instrument, but we dont know which one would be best for them. We can test your child to find a suitable instrument. The testing takes about 15 minutes. Please contact the Director of Performing Arts for an appointment on [email protected] .
Does my boarder child have to do Boarder Music Practice if they are learning an instrument?Yes. All boarders learning an instrument must take part in Boarder Music Practice. The non-refundable $60.00 fee is added to your school account each semester.
Can my boarder child do additional practice if they are learning two instruments? Yes. The Creative Arts Centre is open from 7.30am-5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Students are able to practise their instrument before and after school and at lunchtimes, if a room is free.
Last year, my child learnt the saxophone. Can they change to another instrument this year? Yes, but this is not recommended, as they will be starting from scratch on a new instrument. Many children want to give up an instrument as soon as it becomes challenging or because their friend is playing another instrument. It is often worth persevering on an instrument, unless the Performing Arts teacher recommends otherwise. Some children may want to change to an instrument that their friend plays, but this instrument may not physically suit them.
What brand of instrument should I buy? Please contact your childs music teacher. Do not buy colouredwoodwind, brass or string instruments. Be wary of buying cheap instruments off the internet.
My child missed their Performing Arts lesson because they forgot to go. Can I get a refund or a make-up lesson? No. The only time lessons are refunded or made up is if the teacher is absent or if sufficient notice (1 week) is given of non-attendance by the student/parent. Details are in the Performing Arts Terms and Conditions.
Do I need to buy music and accessories? Yes. Your childs Performing Arts teacher will ask you to buy sheet music and accessories, such as reeds, valve oil etc. A Music Practice Diary is supplied by the school and $8.00 is charged to your account. It is recommended that Boarding students have a large supply of reeds if they play Clarinet/Saxophone. The school does not supply accessories to students.
How do I contact my childs Performing Arts Teacher? Written communication is provided through your childs music diary. Performing Arts teachers will have their contact details on your first account. Teachers can also be contacted through the Director of Performing Arts on [email protected]
My child is a new boarder and I want them to settle in before commencing lessons. Is this possible? This is possible, but places for lessons do fill very quickly and your child may be placed on a waiting list if they do not enrol for lessons at the start of the year. Lesson places cannot be held.
Is it possible to change Performing Arts Teachers mid-year? This is possible if there is another teacher who teaches the same instrument and they have a suitable lesson place available. It is recommended that this is discussed with the Director of Performing Arts.

A Selection of Music Retail Outlets
Please contact your childs performing arts teacher through the school if you have any queries regarding suitable brands of instruments. Remember that you usually get what you pay for. Be wary of cheaper brands of instruments. PLEASE DO NOT BUY COLOURED WOODWIND, BRASS OR STRINGED INSTRUMENTS.
A child can become very quickly discouraged if they are playing on a poor quality instrument that frequently breaks or does not operate correctly. A good quality new instrument will retain its value and will last for a long time, if correctly cared for. A new instrument also has a guarantee which protects the buyer from any faults. Only buy a second hand instrument from a reputable dealer or if someone you trust has checked the instrument thoroughly. The outlets listed below are not recommended by the school, but are placed here for your convenience. Why Should my Child Learn a Musical Instrument?
Music is a wonderful skill for any child, but research shows how learning music can help your child in so many more ways:
Improved reasoning capacity and problem solving skills Improved mathematics and language performance Better memory Greater social and team skills
Everyone has musical ability. Every child is born with musical ability, but if it is not tapped into early enough then it can fail to develop. Being unmusical is more likely to be an outcome of poor training or lack of opportunity than it is from lack of ability, and everyone has the capacity to improve their musical skills. Research indicates that all babies are born with perfect pitch. If they dont learn to use their perfect pitch, they then lose it.
Playing music increases memory and reasoning capacity, time management skills and eloquence. Studies have concluded that learning and playing music improved not just academic performance, but also memory, reasoning, working as part of a group, time management and the ability to think in the abstract.
Playing music improves concentration, memory and self expression. A two year study showed how playing music improved childrens reading and verbal skills through improving concentration, memory and self expression. Other effects learned by the study showed that children learned to like each other more, enjoyed school more and were less stressed during tests, indicating they were better able to handle performance pressure.
Playing music improves the ability to think. Ongoing research demonstrates that learning and playing music builds or modifies neural pathways related to spatial reasoning tasks, which are crucial for higher brain functions like complex mathematics, chess and science.
Music training improves verbal memory. A study has shown that adults who had music training before the age of 12 years had an improved ability to recall spoken words.
Learning music helps under-performing students to improve. Researchers discovered that children who had been lagging behind in their school performance had caught up with their peers in reading and were ahead of them in mathematics after 7 months of music lessons. The childrens classroom attitudes and behaviour ratings had also significantly improved, and after a year of music classes were rated as better than the children who had no additional classes.
Music students are more likely to be good citizens. Secondary students who participate in the performing arts are far less likely to be involved with drugs, crime or have behavioural problems. Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances, including alcohol, drugs and tobacco.
