PerformancePoint Overview

• PerformancePoint bridges gaps to connect varied MOSS data sources• Analysis Services, ODBC, Excel Services, tabular data sources as multidimensional,

SQL Server tables, and MOSS Lists

• Publish Dashboard pages to SharePoint or use Web Part • PerformancePoint Dashboard Item web part• “Hook” up parts with Filters

• Develop in Dashboard Designer, a “click-once” application • Allows user to “save” filter options for truly personalized dashboards• PerformancePoint allows for some very creative and powerful BI

implementations when fully leveraged

Data Sources

o PPS shines with multi-dimensional data sourceso PowerPivot models can be used and are seen as a multi-dimensional sourceo Tables, Queries, Excel, ODBC and SharePoint Lists can pivot

into multi-dimensionalo Excel data connections require named tables, items similar Excel Services o Excel 2010, 2007 for import or edit to create, Excel 2003 use ODBC data sourceo PPS only understands dimensions and measureso Can create aggregations and KPIs on Excel and tabular sources

o Configuration varies for source typeso Permission (Reader, Editor), o Connectiono Cache

o Time Intelligenceo Map data source Time dimension to

PPS for PPS Time functions and STPS expression language

Data Sources

o User must have access to data source to be able to connect to and configure the data source within Dashboard Designer

o Various types of permissions depending upon data source typeo MOSS 2010 document library permissions integration of data source definitionso Administrator has complete control over the dashboard datao Data Source Manager can create and delete data sources and publish data sourceso Creator can create KPIs, scorecards, and indicators and publisho Power Reader has read-only access to all dashboard elements

o Detailed information on permissions by data source can be reviewed athttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff928315.aspx

Workspaces

o Server and Local Workspace (.bswx)o Publish to PPS document libraryo Save work locally via a .bswx fileo Double-click Server item to bring it

and dependent items to a Local Workspace

o Click the Refresh button to get Server content if empty

o Publish to SharePoint or Publish All o Six general areas

o Dashboardo KPIo Scorecardo Reporto Data Source o Indicator

Get Server Content

Best Practice is to always publish updated items back to Server to avoid having local PerformancePoint workspace copies overwritten

Reports and Itemso Analytic Charts and Grids

o Good for exploring multi-dimensional data sources, drilling up, down and acrosso Interactive bar, line and grid chart view of an Analysis Services data source o Simple development using drag and drop with optional MDX Editor and parameterizationo Beware custom MDX and parameter reports might not drill-down and acrosso Limited custom display features, clunky parameters, no point labeling or custom coloringo User training required, Analytic charts navigation is not intuitive for most users

o Excel Services o View of an Excel Services workbook stored in Report Libraryo PPS Time Intelligence on Excel must use column data type of dateo Used named tables, items and parameters in Excel for PPS linking

o Spreadsheet o Creates a spreadsheet report

o SQL Server Report o References Native or Integrated Mode Reporting Services report

o Strategy Map o Visio report requires a scorecard to displays KPI colorso Can get very creative with Visio data-driven diagrams

o URLo My favorite web part to really get creative and sophisticated

Page 12: PerformancePoint Overview

Reports and Items

o KPIs Indicators o Stoplights, gauges, progress bars, smiley faces,

thermometers, trends, road signs and custom symbolso Define thresholds, scoring patterns and indicatorso Map data for each KPI to a specific data set o Do not confuse with MOSS KPIs

o Scorecardso Contains a list of KPIso Comments can be added to cellso Filters can be applied to dynamically display associated

Analytic Chart and Grid datao Objective KPIs rolls up other KPIso Rollups allow grouping KPIs by average weighted,

worst performing, and indicator

Page 13: PerformancePoint Overview

Dashboards

o Preview and publish o Dashboard content placed in PerformancePoint zones o Optional Filters are added and linked to the Dashboard content

o Design with “end points” and linking in mind

o Dashboard then deployed to MOSS o Displaying Dashboard content in MOSS gets a little confusing

o PerformancePoint content is deployed after placement into a PerformancePoint Dashboard container

o PerformancePoint content is selectable as individual PerformancePoint web part items in MOSS from a parent PerformancePoint Dashboard container

o Placing multiple PerformancePoint web parts replicates a PerformancePoint Dashboardo PerformancePoint filtering is applied across multiple PerformancePoint web parts only when the

same content is encapsulated and filtered within a PerformancePoint Dashboard container

Page 14: PerformancePoint Overview

Filters and STPS Expressions

o Do not confuse with MOSS Web Part Filters –these are different

o Defined Filters Objectso MDX Query : Custom MDX code to perform filteringo Member Selection : Specified dimension members to appear in a choice listo Named Set : A defined Analysis Services Named Set as a filtero Tabular Values : Define Excel, SQL Server table or MOSS Lists values as a filtero Time Intelligence and Time Formula

o Applies and maps Time dimension memberso Analysis Services Time dimension must truly be defined as a Time dimension

o Analytic Chart or Grid Background Itemso Need entry point for filters that also requires

Dimension placement on background

o Reporting Services o Pass filters to shown parameterso Pass cell values from PPS dashboard linked cell value to parameters

Page 15: PerformancePoint Overview

Filters and STPS Expressions

o Simple Time-Period Specification (STPS) is a basic syntax for Time Intelligence Filter Link Formulaso Specify offsets and ranges from named date and PPS translates it to MDXo Examples

o Year – 1o Month:Month+5

o Time Intelligence Post Formula Calendar executes an MDX formula using selected date as the start date

o Expression reference via Help in Dashboard Designer

STPS Formulas

Page 16: PerformancePoint Overview

Publishing

o Data Manager Permission or higher required to Publisho Preview or Publish o MOSS publishing options

o Enter SharePoint Site URL, Document Library and choose a Master Page to export to an html pageo Publish to PPS then us Edit page in MOSS, add PerformancePoint web part items, connect to PPS

filters and configure web part settings

o Scorecards, analytic reports and strategy maps can be exported o Excel (static view)o PowerPoint (static view)

PerformancePoint MOSS Integration

o Known Issues o PerformancePoint development can be confusingo Cover the PerformancePoint Workspaces (.bswx ) check out, modification and approval workflow in report

publishing governance processes o Save and version PerformancePoint workspace (.bswx ) files for back upso PerformancePoint does not have Alerts for users like Reporting Services but

there is a CodePlex project with Alerting that can be usedo Security between all the various parts can be challenging!

o MOSS 2010 Improvementso PerformancePoint is now directly integrated into MOSS 2010 o No more multiple product installationso No more separate Monitoring Central Web siteo Report Library menus contain Dashboard Designer options like Reporting Services Integrated Mode Report

Library menus in MOSS 2007o Trend Analysis, PivotChart and PivotTable features are no longer supported

Page 18: PerformancePoint Overview

PerformancePoint MOSS Integration

o Dashboard Designero PPS Deployed Reports

o Application level securityo Connection per usero Custom data option

o Reporting Serviceso Credentials stored Security

o Excel Serviceso Unattended execution settings

o Kerberos
