Brothers Tony and Glenn were introduced to engineering at a young

age and learnt how to design and produce parts for working model

steam locomotives and aeroplanes which their father Henry Allen had

an enthusiasm for building in the garden workshop.

During a trip with a group of friends to Burnham-on-Crouch, a

well-known sailing centre on the East Coast of England, they saw a

fleet of racing dinghies sail by. They were so impressed with these sleek

sailing boats that they went along to the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club

to find out more. There they met an American called Beecher Moore

who convinced them that they should build their own racing dinghy.

They built their first Hornet in their garden shed and fitted it out with

homemade fittings. It soon became obvious to them that the brass cam

cleats, which were highly prized on some of the race-winning boats,

were heavy and very expensive, so they decided to design and engineer

their own die-cast aluminum cam cleats. Of course, word spread of the

new light innovative fittings amongst the fleet of Hornets and it wasn’t

long before they were selling and bartering them amongst their friends.

It was in 1956 that the Allen brothers formed their dinghy fittings

enterprise into a company and Beecher Moore persuaded them to

supply Jack Holt’s boat-building business with their innovative new

products. So began the long and fruitful partnership they named

Holt-Allen. Within a few years Allen Brothers had increased their

resources to include their own design of injection moulding machines,

metal press and punch machines and had increased their product

range to include blocks, plastic cleats, sailmakers’ hardware, stainless

steel rigging gear and more.

Today, you can look at most sailing dinghies and you’ll find products

designed and manufactured by Allen, from state-of-the-art dynamic

bearing block systems, to humble yet essential ball stoppers.

We have the capacity to produce thousands of different products,

with a huge archive of tooling and the resources to fulfill the requirements

of the marine trade and the discerning sailor, from mass production

to custom design.

In-house resources include: Design & CAD modelling - using the advanced

Pro-Engineer CAD software our design team can quickly develop new

ideas and designs into computer models, which can be structurally

assessed with our Ansys computer simulated stress analysis software.

Prototype models can be seen within hours using our Dimension 3D

part printer. Tool making - finished designs are seamlessly progressed

through the tool making stages using the parametric features of Pro-

Engineer tool design and CNC machining software. Our toolmakers can

produce single or multi-impression tools for injection moulding, sheet metal

pierce and blank tools, secondary operation form tools, assembly jigs and

fixtures. Component parts - our factory is equipped to manufacture a

diverse range of parts. We are particularly flexible in the production of short

run specialist parts, and low to medium volume quantities.

CNC injection moulding - we are experts in the use of advanced

engineering polymers and composites such as carbon fibre filled acetals

and nylons. CNC turned parts - our 5 axis sliding head lathes produce

high precision parts in all materials. CNC sheet metal forming - pierced

and blanked parts, with secondary forming and cutting presses.

CNC milled parts – all materials. Aluminum gravity cast parts - from

our own in-house foundry. Fabrication - our versatile and skilled

workforce can provide fully assembled products, using a range of

techniques such as welding, drilling, riveting, threaded fasteners,

adhesives, pad-printing and packing. Sales and distribution - our

A block is a single or multiple pulley. One or

more sheaves are enclosed in an assembly

between cheeks. In use a block is fixed to

the end of a line, to a spar, or to a surface.

Rope or line is threaded through the

sheaves. Some blocks have a ratchet,

which means that they turn freely when you

pull a line in one direction but do not turn in

the other direction. This makes a line easier

to hold especially on a windy day.

We invented the science behind

the patented Allen dynamic bearing

technology, and all our high performing

blocks use this as a basis of the inner

bearing system. We also invented and

patented the Ultra-strap technology,

a very narrow strap of high strength

stainless steel, which can be lashed

without the fear of line abrasion

associated with

strap

construction.

The sheaves and cheeks are moulded from advanced engineering

polymers, which are all wrapped up

in meticulously designed stainless

steel cheeks, adding strength to the

Dynamic bearing blocks This range was designed particularly for the catamaran and sportsboat market. It can be used in a variety of applications from jib sheet to mainsheet systems. It has a large central hole for tie-on becket requirements and the high quality design and engineering is noticeably in a league of its own.


BLOCKS BLOCKS

Ratchet blocks Allen Brothers were pioneers in the development of the first automatic ratchets some 15+ years ago. The clever internal mechanism is designed to activate when the block is under load – as every sailor knows this can make all the difference on a long spinnaker reach or upwind beat. Over the years glitches in performance have been resolved and the latest incarnation ‘Ezi-ratchet’ is one of the most reliable and effective on the market. New to the range are our switchable ratchet blocks allowing the mechanism to be switched on or off. The swivel head can be locked in place and Allen sheave technology gives you grip under load and easy release when load is decreased. All our ratchet blocks are engineered with ball bearing technology and advanced engineering polymers for longevity and performance.

Springs - stainless steel Large cylindrical springs are designed to suit blocks such as the Ezi-ratchet as well as some of the blocks in the A2030 range and above. Conical springs are ideal for blocks in the 16, 20 & 30mm range.

Cleats are used to hold a line under load.

Simple open cleats rely on a rope to be tied

to them, while v-cleats or ClamcleatsR use a

narrowing opening to jam the line in place,

or cam cleats use swivelling jaws to hold

the rope. They are fitted directly to the deck,

spars or used as part of a pulley system as

in trapeze wires. Risers and other accessories

allow the cleats to be angled correctly or the

line to be held in place when it is un-cleated.

Allen cam cleats

Allen’s cam cleats have had over 50 years

of meticulous research and development

to perfect their design. Available in either

alloy or Alanite (a super-light, super-

tough carbon composite) the jaw profile

optimises rope entry and exit for smooth

cleating and un-cleating. Inside the cleat,

double coil springs and ball bearing

technology give consistent cam action.

the build up of heat away from the jaws

Allen Traveller Cars

Our travellers are made by CNC

machining from a single solid length of

high grade, black anodised aluminium,

allowing us to create perfectly flowing

ball tracks that won’t explode and can

Rudder pintles & gudgeons

Allen has developed its unique high

performance rudderstock design from

years of experience in the small boat

market. The design is based on innovative

interlocking precision-machined

components, and does away with the

chunky pintle and gudgeon brackets that

are typically found on pressed aluminium

stocks. Instead they are integrated into

the main section to give a clean, invisible

fixing. Not only does this new concept

give you a clean, cutting-edge look, but

it also delivers a 25% weight reduction

in comparison to the traditional design.

The final assembly is very stiff and robust,

Compact and lightweight, made from

high quality stainless steel, Allen’s vernier

adjusters are the only choice when fine

–tune rig adjustments are required.

New to the range is the A4772DR-KIT

heavy-duty vernier adjuster with captive

de-raker. Made from heavy-duty 14

gauge 316 stainless steel, it easily

handles higher loads and with the aid of

calibrated settings, fast pins and captive

de-raker, the result is easy fine-tuning on

the water. It is also available in a compact

version ( A4772SDR-KIT ) where there

is limited requirement for rake change

between light and heavy airs.
