Nowadays it is only when we read stories that we realize what a challenge it was to be a successful hunter in times gone by. These stalks were completely devoid of any technically advanced tools like vari-able scopes with illuminated reticles, or super-accurate long-range rifles – they took place with only a shaky Drilling for a close-quarters shot with iron sights.

But let’s be honest: These days, who takes on such hardships voluntarily? Even the hunt, deeply rooted in tradition, has adapted to modern times – and that’s a good thing! Technological progress makes

Its advantages at a glance:

Other than with most lead-free bullets, intense barrel cleaning is almost not necessary with the EVO Green, due to the nickel-plated steel jacket.

EVO GREENOrdinary lead-free bullet

The RWS EVOLUTION GREEN is a par-tially fragmenting, lead-free bullet featur-ing a series of interdependent construc-tive details. The RWS EVOLUTION GREEN achieves its convincing performance with dual cores made from food-safe tin and featuring a special pre-fragmentation of

EVOLUTION GREENOutstanding shock effect - lead free

the frontal core. Working together with the Speed Tip point, this creates outstanding shocking power even at long ranges. This bullet is suitable for all ordinary game ani-mals, but is ideal for use against light to medium game.

Speed-Tip for flatter trajectory with dramatic impact effect

Sharp leading edge for cut hair at the strike

Nickel-plated jacket to reduce barrel wear

Thin jacket for certain and quick expansion

Stable rear core of tin for extreme penetration

Front core of food-safe tin with radial perforations for certain expansion and impact shock

Stronger jacket for a certain exit

TIP

• Distance-PlusConvincing killing power even at longer ranges. Normal bullets markedly lose their deformation ability as the range increases, but not so with EVOLUTION GREEN. Intelli-gent bullet design dramatically reduces this tendency.

• Flat trajectoryExtended range with high velocity and energy due to a high ballistic coefficient (BC) and Speed Tip core insert.

• Reliable signs at the strike Guaranteed exit for an adequate blood

trail thanks to a stable rear section. The sharp leading edge leaves plenty of

cut hair at the strike.

Range

• Effect-PlusOutstanding impact behaviour through mul-tiple perforations of the front tin core and the Speed Tip point for instantaneous shock effect. This results in significantly shorter runs after the shot and less tracking effort.

The RWS HIT is a lead-free expanding bullet with high weight retention due to its mon-olithic construction. The unique HIT Matrix with the RWS TC-Tip (Twin-Compres-sion-Tip) and the RWS ACC (Active-Cra-ter-Cavity) guarantees fast and certain expansion with great shocking power, even at long ranges. The compact slug, which

retains 99% of its original weight, assures deep penetration and a certain exit wound - even after striking bone! This makes the RWS HIT the appropriate lead-free alterna-tive for those favouring non-fragmenting bullets. This bullet is suitable for all ordi-nary game animals, but is ideal for use against medium to heavy game.

• Less Damaged Meat Unlike fragmenting bullets, the lead-free RWS HIT imparts its energy exclusively by a 100% fragment-free mushrooming of the copper bullet in the game animal. The result: Less wasted meat and no bullet fragments!

• Superior PenetrationThe mushroomed slug retains its integrity despite the bullet’s rapid expansion. This guarantees deep penetration and a certain exit, even at very high impact velocities and/or against heavy resistance such as major bones. It is in the taking of larger game that the superior qualities of this bullet are the most impressive.

Hannes Dikhoff, passionate hunter and expert on ammunition and special terminal ballistics. Besides numerous driven game shoots, his wealth of experience comes from many international hunting trips for a variety of species, as well as his constant inspection and optimisation of ammunition in the RWS laboratory!

RWS offer the HIT and the EVO Green as lead-free bullets. What are their basic differences? There are two differing philosophies. The EVO Green is a partially fragmenting bullet based upon a jacket design using two sep-arate tin cores. With this type of bullet we exploit the disintegration of the pre-frag-mented front core and its numerous pieces to achieve a very high shock effect. The penetrator slug is calibre-size and retains about 60% of its original weight. The RWS HIT is completely different. It is a mass-stable expanding bullet of monolithic copper construction. Tissues are destroyed along the bullet’s path as the bullet mush-rooms with a high release of energy – even at great depth thanks to its superior pene-trating power – which almost always results in a certain and powerful exit wound.

What are the advantages and special features of the RWS HIT bullet? The RWS HIT scores as a lead-free, mass-stable expanding bullet that offers superior penetrating power, a certain and powerful exit wound, and minimal meat damage. These advantages are best played out against medium to large game. Compared to bullets of a similar design, it offers the following advantages: The special bullet tip combined with the HIT Matrix guarantees the best possible expan-sion even on smaller animals and at longer ranges. Its nickeled surface protects against excessive metal fouling.

What are the special features and advantages of the EVO Green? In this bullet, by means of finely regulating the relationships between the Speed Tip point, the taper of the jacket material, and the way the tin front core is pre-fragmented, the otherwise limiting material constraints of tin are completely neutralised. The result is the greatest shock effect possible with game fleeing only a short distance – even at longer ranges. These advantages play out best with light to medium game. But that is not all. The EVO Green also scores with its flat trajectory, high velocity, and a nickeled mild steel jacket that almost makes barrel cleaning optional!

For what do you recommend the HIT, for what the EVO Green? In general, both bullet types are suitable for all domestic game species.Hunters for whom minimal meat damage is the most important consideration, and who also regularly shoot heavy game can in par-ticular profit from the special advantages of the HIT. When they habitually hunt at the last light of day, close to property lines, or in difficult terrain, they will value the advan-tage of short flight distances. Here the EVO Green is the best choice, especially for light to medium game!

LEAD-FREE SOLUTIONS FROM THE MARKET LEADERInterview with RWS Product Manager Hannes Dikhoff

What are the special challenges involved with lead-free rifle bullets?Lead has been the ballistically ideal bullet material for centuries. The demands of interior and exterior ballistics on the phys-ical properties of the bullet material are extreme. It is especially at longer hunting ranges that the limitations of most lead-free materials become apparent. Simply replac-ing the lead core with a different material cannot compensate for their obvious differ-ences in physical properties. We must dig deep into our bag of tricks to negate the material disadvantages of lead-free bullets by adding a few wrinkles of our own.

For several years now, lead bullets have been banned for shooting game

in several areas across Germany. This regulation has been surrounded by

controversy and is still a cause of agitation and uncertainty amongst hunters.

As market leader, we at RWS must set the bar very high in order to meet the

great expectations of our users.

The result is nothing to sneeze at: We now offer two lead-free super-premium

bullets, the RWS HIT and the EVO Green.

‘RWS HIT’, Wild und Hund, May 2015 Conclusion: ‘Versatile in use, powerful in effect, damages little meat, and accurate: Many have been waiting for an expanding bullet like this.’ Test: Yearling doe, telephone book test (70m), Terminal ballistics in .308 Win.

R. Zeitler, exclusive first tester of the RWS HIT, St. Hubertus, Nov. 2014 ‘RWS High Impact Technology: Really a hit?’ Conclusion: ‘…I can only take my hat off to the RWS HIT. It is one of the best bullets that I have ever used. It is all around a successful design and an extraordinary phenomenon among truly lead-free bullets. The HIT convinced me on all points with its excellent accu-racy and very reliable results on game of various weights as well as at differing distances at long range…’

Andreas Maurer, Key Account Manager with Merkel Jagd- & Sportwaffen ‘In the course of a driven game shoot in a state-run hunting area in northern Germany over a year ago, I re-sighted my Helix in .30-06 to the RWS HIT for the first time. At the time I did this unwillingly, but lead-free was mandatory. Today, many of my colleagues also value the high accuracy and shocking power of HIT bullets. For me, it of course is packed along for all of my hunts, whether lead-free is mandatory or not!’

USER COMMENTS Thrilled hunters and the press share their experiences with EVO Green and HIT

EVO Green im Jagdeinsatz’, Jagd und Natur, March 2015 Conclusion: ‘The tested EVO Green ammunition had a very good effect against the game we hunted. All testers found the ammuni-tion to be the equivalent of the leaded ammunition they had been using previously. […] EVO Green and HIT complement each other ideally.’Test: 16 animals, including red deer, roe deer and chamois taken with .30-06 and 7x64 calibres at 100m

Maruan Al-Hammoud, Head of Marketing and PR at SAUER ‘The first thing that attracted my attention to the EVO Green bullet was its excellent accuracy. As a passionate long-range shooter, I have learnt to really appreciate group sizes when they get below 20 millimetres. After using it during numerous driven game shoots, my initial scepticism in regards to whether the bullet is too light for the purpose has been alleviated. Time after time, even the fat-test boar dropped in its tracks when hit. There was always an exit wound, even though one was not needed to find those animals. For these reasons I find the EVO Green to be the perfect combination of high accuracy, great shock effect and mild recoil.’

Desiree Schwers, Master of Forestry Engineering and bloodhound handler ‘I have used the EVO Green in my .30-06 for the last three years and I am thoroughly convinced of its effectiveness. For me, it is a real alternative that has nothing to be ashamed of when compared to lead-core bullets under ordinary hunting conditions.’

of lead, which reduces the mass of a bullet of the same form and volume. For the other, lead-free materials such as copper, brass or tin are “harder” than lead, the bal-listically ideal material. These bullets need somewhat more velocity so that the desired effect is achieved upon impact. By making lead-free bullets a little lighter, they will retain the velocity necessary. This is espe-cially true for monolithic expanding bullets!

3. Will the point of impact change when I switch to lead-free ammunition? One can say in general that every loading has different internal and external ballistics that vary somewhat from barrel to barrel. That is why we most urgently recommend that the point of impact be verified any time you change loads.

4. Is there more meat damage with the EVO Green due to the intentional frag-mentation?The superior shocking power of the EVO Green is achieved through the disintegra-tion of the frontal core, whereby every frag-ment increases the chances that important organs, vessels and neural pathways, etc. are destroyed to cause the game animal to drop at the shot. For many hunters this advantage is the most important one, and they accept that sometimes there will be a little more dam-aged meat.

5. Does stricken game flee farther when lead-free bullets are used? Here, too, there is no pat answer. Mono-lithic expanding bullets in particular need a somewhat higher terminal velocity to start expansion in a game animal. At especially long ranges with decreasing velocity the expansion is also reduced, which may result in longer flights. This may be more likely when used against lighter game.

6. Will I need to change where I aim after switching over to lead-free bullets? That is basically unnecessary. Still, we do recommend that you aim for the shoulder blade and not behind it when using mon-olithic designs like the RWS HIT on lighter game.

7. Is there an increased risk of ricochets with lead-free bullets?Monolithic bullet designs as a whole pos-sess a higher residual energy after glancing off of hard surfaces. This means a larger danger zone! We therefore recommend that the usual safety precautions be contin-uously observed and discourage shooting monolithic bullets around property lines!

RWS EXPERTISE Answers to frequently asked questions

barrel to barrel. In the HIT, we were able to reduce deposits by 60% through the use of Performance Grooves and a nickel coating. 2. Why are lead-free bullets often lighter and faster? There are two things that must be under-stood. For one, the specific gravity of lead-free replacements is usually less than that

1. Is more cleaning effort required when lead-free bullets are used? There is no pat answer to this. With EVO Green and its jacket made from nickeled mild steel, there is clearly less need to clean the bore than with the usual lead-core bul-lets! Monolithic bullet designs with their high copper content demand shorter clean-ing intervals in general, which vary from
