Per Egland is a swedish grammy nominated composer who writes many different kinds of music. Working mainly as a composer for contemorary music in Stockholm, he also writes music for film and releases records both as a producer/performer but also as a experimental solo artist. A bit confusing maby, but the different domains of music is importaint ingredients in Eglands compositions. His recent album Skogen (the forrest), for childrens choir, just got nominated for a swedish grammy award. Per was born in 1980 in Härnösand, a small town in the norhern part of Sweden. His intrest in composing began when he, in his teens, met swedish composer Fredrik Högberg after a premier of his. Högberg told Per (who had been playing percussion at the concert) that percussion would not be a thing for Per in the future, and that composition was far more challenging. Per then went to study with Högberg who later also encuraged Per to study at the College of music in Piteå with Jan Sandström. When Egland left the collage in Piteå he continued his studies with Karin Rehnqvist, Pär Lindgren and Bill Brunson at the Royal college of music in Stockholm. He has also studied with Fabio Cifarello Chiardi at the Conservatorio di musica di Perugia in Italy. Per now lives in Stockholm with his wife Anna-Linda. Eglands works ranges from orchestral music to smaller chamber pieces as well as different kinds of electronic works. Jazz and rock music has always been a great influence on his compositions. While studying in Stockholm Per was twice accepted and performed at the young nordic composer festival in Oslo 2008 and in Gothenburg 2009. The electronic work Durra en fjord was released on the CD Boucles inter nations by ICEM in 2010. Recently Per finished a collaboration with the Kreuzer quartet who performed Eglands second string quartet Perdix Partridge Partridge Perdix at the Royal Academy of music in London. In 2012 he composed a piece called Eskapisten - a monodrama for wind orchestra, choir and actor/singer in wich Egland plays the main character himself. In the summer of 2012 Egland was invited with his piece give me your beak! to the New paths in music festival in New York City. Ge mig din näbb! (give me your beak) One idea for this piece was to expolore and challange the perception of a piece of music in a concert situation. It is based on a scetch for an istallation I did for loudspeakers in a livingroom; amall repeated fragments of high-frequent sounds wich where to be played with several minutes of silence between them. I have always been very intrested in that awkward feeling when something starts – stops – and starts again - slightly changed. The title is inspired by the sense of surroundings such as walking into a forrests consisting of soft bird sounds. The swedish word näbb (beak) also refers to the somewhat edgy nature of the piece, and the almost stinging timbre of the brass and wood winds. Förlåt idiot, förlåt! (Forgive me idiot, please forgive me!) Egland wrote the text for this piece himself. It is a celebration of naivity and the choir cries out: ”Please forgive us idiot, we needed you””Dear beloved idiot, please forgive us”. Per Egland also wrote the score for the movie Farsan by director Josef Fares which made nr 1. both in the cinema- and dvd chart in Sweden in 2010. The same year he wrote the score for the short film Graveyard by Fredrik Rollenhagen which was premiered at the Short films corner at the international film festival in Cannes.
