Callum Mitchell, a Cornish-born artist, will be working with the National Trust team on the Tin Coast, Falmouth University BA (Hons) Architecture students and other local artists. The work will pose the question ‘why is this place special to you?’ and will include the creation of temporary structures on the landscape that will tell the stories as they start to take shape. Set within the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, the Tin Coast ‘Gorthwedh’ (meaning ‘contrast’ in the Cornish language, and pronounced gorse-weth) is a project that will be reflecting on the area’s industrial past, its social changes and its meaning to residents and visitors today.

Of the commission Callum says: ‘The themes, challenges and potential of the project are all very appealing to me and I’m confident that together we can create something that is innovative and engaging, as well as being representative of the local community.’

Gorthwedh is part of a series of events happening on the Tin Coast in summer and beyond. For more information and updates to this project, head to nationaltrust.org.uk/tin-coast

The National Trust cares for the 320-year-old sycamore tree in the village of Tolpuddle, which is recognised as the symbolic birthplace of the Trades Union movement.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs met under the tree to discuss their poor wages and living conditions, and in 1834 were arrested and subsequently convicted for swearing a secret oath as part of the formation of a union.

We’ve commissioned the British contemporary artist Bob and Roberta Smith, who will be reflecting on the

history of the tree and the Martyrs, and the themes of justice, freedom and rights, through a piece of work titled Paint Freedom.

Of the artwork Bob says ‘Trees are amazing things, they are symbols of life and this tree has been around for many years in Tolpuddle. So my idea was to invite people to paint their

version of the tree on a placard, and to use these to create a ‘forest of trees’. The placards will also feature portraits of people who we think might have a similar fate to the Tolpuddle Martyrs.’

You can read more about Bob’s participatory work, and others in the national programme, in your Magazine.

Paint Freedom is part of a series of activities, including walks and family events, taking place in the area throughout the summer. Find out more at nationaltrust.org.uk/tolpuddle

Ancient grain for newflour at Dunster Mill

They’re grinding spelt at Dunster Watermill in Somerset. Following requests from visitors for spelt flour Stephen Hayes, who is the Mill Operations Manager, decided to start working with the ancient grain which is popular due to its distinctive nutty flavour.

The mill at Dunster Castle already produces 10 tonnes of wholewheat flour each year, on a site with a tradition of milling dating back at least to the Domesday Book of 1086.

It’s a rare example of a working 18th-century mill with double overshot waterwheels, meaning it operates with two separate wheels allowing the mill to run one or two millstones.

You’ll be able to see the mill in action on the first Wednesday of every month, and certain other dates throughout the year. The Watermill Tea-room serves bread made with this very locally produced flour, and you can buy bags of spelt and wholewheat flour from the shop.

Wood, fashion and 100 years of the Foresty Commission‘Tree of Life’ is the new fashion exhibition upstairs in Killerton House, Devon, celebrating Killerton’s link to the founding of the Forestry Commission in 1919.

MP Francis Acland, whose family owned the Killerton estate, was instrumental in the creation of the Forestry Commission a hundred years ago.

The exhibition – revealing fabulous pieces from the National Trust’s largest fashion collection – demonstrates how materials processed from various species of trees can be used to make fibre, cloth, dyes, paper, footwear and headgear.

It includes examples of clothing made from these materials, as well as decorative pieces patterned with motifs inspired by seasonal trees, leaves, blossom and fruit.

The story of Francis Acland’s role in the Forestry Commission continues on the ground floor of Killerton House with another new exhibition: ‘Seeing the wood and the trees.’ This exhibition looks at what happened in 1919 when the Forestry Commission was founded and how the National Trust team at Killerton today is working to look after woodlands and trees on the estate for the future.

Floralia: a celebration at StourheadIn ancient Rome, Floralia was a celebration in honour of Flora the goddess of flowers. At Stourhead this May and June look out for floral arrangements and Roman symbols of fertility throughout the garden, including at the Temple of Flora, above left, which was the first of three temples to be built here in 1745.

As the rhododendrons and azaleas come into bloom there’s also a chance to learn more about the floral stars of the collection. Stourhead’s gardeners will be leading free tours at 2pm every Tuesday and Thursday in May and June. Spaces are limited and can be booked on arrival.

The Floralia programme will run from 1 May to 30 June. Find out more at nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead

The calm after the stormThe winter of 2018 is one that the team at Newark Park won’t forget. The Beast from the East’s storms meant the Tudor house suffered a water leak in the East Wing, causing major damage.

Fortunately the leak was discovered and stopped quickly but the staff and volunteers at Newark Park then had a huge amount to do to get the house back to normal – starting with drying it out. They had to remove floorboards and some wallpapers, using specialist dehumidifiers and vacuum cleaners to extract the moisture from the cavities between the different floors.

In addition, they had the considerable task of moving items from the extensive collection to dry rooms, to minimise any risk of damage to these precious objects.

Fast-forward to today, and the house is fully open again having been repaired, restored and conserved, and the team at Newark are enjoying welcoming visitors back to enjoy the breadth of this fascinating and much-loved house once again.

Celebrating 70 years with 7,000 trees

Visitors will have the chance to sponsor one of 7,000 trees that the Arlington Court staff and volunteers are planting on the historic estate in North Devon. They’re celebrating 70 years of the National Trust looking after Arlington Court, and true to the spirit of this lovely place the new woodland will help wildlife to thrive. In 1949, Miss Rosalie Chichester, whose life’s work was to create a nature reserve on her family estate, bequeathed Arlington Court and the surrounding land to the Trust. The new woodland – made up of oak, lime, rowan, cherry, crab apple and spindle saplings - will support more habitats for wildlife and nature.

‘Oak woodlands are amongst the very best habitats for wildlife and nature’, says the Trust’s Lead Ranger Julian Gurney. ‘One mature oak tree is capable of supporting over 350 separate life forms, from the smallest lichens to wonderful large fungi, bats, birds, butterflies and moths. ‘Unfortunately our woodlands have recently been affected by Phytophthora (confusingly known as ‘sudden oak death’), meaning we’ve had to fell many trees to slow its spread. Native oaks, like those we plan to plant, are not affected by this disease which is great news for the future.’ Search online for ‘Arlington Court woodland appeal’.

Watering at WoolacombeOver the summer, rangers at Woolacombe Warren will be creating a pond and water trough system to bring water to the cattle grazing the land.

By creating this natural, sustainable and free water source, the rangers will be saving the Trust the cost of transportation and fuel involved in taking water to the cattle.

The work is being carried out with careful consideration so it won’t disturb the existing natural flow of water or the habitats and resident wildlife it currently supports.

Once the new reservoir system is in place, it should also create a thriving environment to be colonised by water-loving creatures like frogs, toads, newts, dragonfly larvae and water boatmen, and plants such as greater bird’s-foot trefoil.
