Introduction

This week is Art Week. Today, the focus is going to be people in art. Artists may choose to draw a self-portrait

or other people that have an importance to them, equally they may choose to draw someone they do not

know. There are lots of different techniques to drawing people’s faces and bodies. We are going to investigate

the different mediums (methods) artists use to create their artwork.

2. What was your first reaction to this artwork? Why do you think you had the reaction?

3. Does your opinion about the artwork change the longer you look at it? Why?

4. Describe the lines in this artwork

5. Describe the colours in the artwork

6. Which area of the artwork is most important? Why?

7. Close your eyes and describe the artwork from memory. Why did you remember what you

remembered? Why did you forget what you forgot?

8. How would you describe this artwork to someone who has never seen it?

9. What elements of this painting seem real?

10. What adjectives or verbs would you use to describe this artwork?

11. What is strange or mysterious about this painting?

12. What is normal about this artwork?

13. If this painting had sound effects, what would they sound like?

14. What do we know about the artist after viewing this artwork?

15. If you could ask the artist a question, what would you ask him/her?

16. How do you think this artwork was made?

17. What’s the story being told, if any?

18. What emotions do you feel when looking at this?

19. What title would you give this artwork?

20. If you could change this artwork, how would you change it? Why?

Option 2 – Take Photographs

If you or another member of your household has a camera, ask them to take a picture of yourself. Can you

experiment with the settings and change your photograph?

Think about the lighting – can you see all of your features in the photo?

Try not to have too much in the background of your photograph

Option 3 – Create a Quiz

Choose one of the artists you have looked at today – L.S. Lowry or Jane Perkins and create a quiz about that

artist. You could choose to have true/false statements, multiple choice questions, odd one out and numerical

questions. Use the websites below to help you find facts about your artist.
