2017 MD-11 STATE CONVENTION SPOTLIGHT

2017 has been a year for giving credit where credit is due. Cheryl Anderson has long been associated with eyeglass mission trips and with the USA/Canada Forum alongside husband PID Gary. Closer to home, Lion Cheryl has been instrumental with the GVSU Campus Club for many years as well. At the 11C1 District Convention she was awarded the Rod Prys Spirit Award by her peers and the Granville and Betty Cutler Award by past recipients. Then at the State Convention she received a Presidential Medal. Daughter Carla and family tagged along to Great Wolf Lodge, for the

Waterpark, Grandma thought not knowing she was about to receive an award at the State Convention. In fact Grandma and Grandpa were joined at the head table by grandkids Carter and Reese. But the honors haven’t stopped there. Lion Cheryl just received the Ken Lautzenheiser Award at the Grand Rapids Awards Nights. Congratulations Lion Cheryl!

“How over the top I am with excitement to have received the Rod Prys Spirit Award. Rod & I worked closely with the Campus Club and Rod’s spirit will always be unsurpassable. I want to thank every-one who voted for me & I cannot express how excited but humbled I am to have received this award. It means more to me than you will ever know. Also, I’d like to thank all who voted for me to receive the Granville & Betty Cutler Award. Granville was a special man I can still see his unforgettable smile.

The District Convention was an unbelievable place for me to receive these awards and I am sorry I wasn't there. I celebrated by singing with my grandkids on the beach while building sand castles and decorating them with yoyos!”

The current Lions year is quickly becoming the starting point for the upcoming year; all of our clubs and their individual members have until June 30th to make your contributions (June 15th would be better to make sure LCIF has a chance to rec-

ord it for this fiscal year). The end of April report I received shows 11C-1 clubs have responded to our Foundation needs with $11,840.00 thus far and with 45.95% of them contributing. I was hoping this year to get much closer to the 100% mark regardless of the total dollars but that hope is fading fast. We still have an opportunity to reach last year’s total of $15,000.00 should a few more clubs or members decide to give to our world respected Foundation.

I want to thank the five clubs (and their

individual members that gave to LCIF) that topped the $1,000.00 mark. They are: Hopkins with over $2,000.00, Northside, Fruitport, Rockford, Grand Rapids and Thornapple Valley which accounted thus far for nearly 40% of our District’s total.

I have mentioned before that LCIF has done so many marvelous projects that you have to go on line or read the International magazine to see most of them. I can’t possibly list them all in a District newsletter so please take the time to peruse for yourself.

Thanks for all you do, please consider making your contribution to LCIF quickly if you are intending to do so.

CLUB NEWS (AKA GRANS GEMS)

ALTO:

They were passing out awards and the leadership baton June 1st in Alto. President Dan Blanton passed the gav-el and bell to incoming club president Ron Ward, while Janet Van Wyck was recognized for bringing in a new club member. Ken Adamy received the highest honor of all – the prestigious Melvin Jones award.

CEDAR SPRINGS

Cedar Springs Lions were one of several community organizations who are featured on a Maibaum erected in May by Cedar Springs Brewing Company honoring the organizations that make their city great.

DORR TOWNSHIP: At this time of year there are some ongoing club projects in Dorr like planting flowers around signs for the community at the Dorr Township Park. Another project that has come to fruition is the purchase of a trailer complete with appliances with help from Dorr Rec. The beauty of Dorr Township Lions is the rapport they have with other agencies in Dorr like the Rec Department where they work together using equipment, services and manpower for the betterment of the community.

FRUITPORT:

Two parades, two large fireworks shows, a car show, food, music and a carnival kicked off the annual Fruitport Old Fashioned Days organized by the Fruitport Lions Club. Old Fashioned Days was held May 24 through Memorial Day and was based out of Ponoma Park. Other entertainment options included Fruitport Has Talent, 5 and 10K races, a petting zoo and pony rides for the younger crowd, a seniors’ dinner and veterans service for those a little older. And of course, the Lions served their famous Ox Roast Dinners. They’ll also be dancing into the sunset every Wednesday night all summer long at the Ponoma Park Bandshell celebrating Lions 100 th birthday with the Fruitport community.

LAKEWOOD:

It was a finger licking good time at the Lake Odessa

Beach Pavillion right next to the lake as the Lakewood Area

Lions grilled their Chicken Barbecue May 21st.

LYONS MUIR:

Lyons Muir Lions were honored and enjoyed lunch with students at Twin River Elementary in Muir May 26 at the school’s field day for all the club does for the students. Not only do they host a community wide Halloween Party in October, prepare Thanksgiving Boxes in November, hold a coat drive and adopt families at Christmas, they also provide school supplies in March so teachers don’t have to dig into their pockets. They also donate to the school library in March as well in keeping with the March is Reading Month theme.

The Duane D. Agricultural Memorial Scholarship was presented to Daniel Fountain of Ionia High School May 31st.

Daniel is a member of the National Honor Society, played varsity golf and tennis, is

a four-year member of the jazz and marching

bands, has his own four-piece band that plays

classic rock at various events and is a wood-

worker through 4-H. He will attend GVSU in the

fall for Mechanical Engi-neering and hopes to

work for John Deere in the future. The scholar-ship is one of two given annually to students to honor charter member

Duane Ferris.

MARNE: The Marne American Le-

gion, Marne Lions Club, and

Wright Township joined forces

to organize the 69th annual

Marne Memorial Day Parade

and Marne Fest. Marne Fest

followed the parade where the

three organizations showed

their love for Marne by

celebrating with a Car and

Motorcycle Show, 5K Race,

food, music, crafters lane and

competitions like the decorated

bicycle contest. Local youth

also compete each year to draw

the official logo which this year

featured the theme “American

Pride.”

MUSKEGON NORTHSIDE: They were flipping flap jacks and selling treasures at the Muskegon Northside Yard Sale May 19th. They were at it again serving pancakes from the club’s pancake express wagon at the LST warship moored in downtown Muskegon June 3rd. Ramp crews are currently hard at work at this time as is work on the Causeway. The club has plans in the works to help raise

funds to repair bridges on the Causeway.

ROCKFORD:

Rockford Lions were pulling pints at the City’s Start of Summer Celebrations June 9. As the largest fundraiser of the year, the Lions host and serve at the Beer Tent mingling with the public while providing music and refreshments. They also participate in the parade over the same weekend and manage the city market. The Rockford Leo’s ended school on a high note having served breakfast to Rockford teachers at North and Central locations. They also made a profit of $231 on a donut

MUSKEGON HOST: June is a busy month for the Muskegon Host Lions. On June 10 the club served pancakes to more than 1,000 people as part of the 12th annual Wings of Mercy Care Fare. This event is a fundraiser for the Wings of Mercy program, which is a group of volunteer pilots who transport people to medical appointments in the Midwest. Another long time club tradition also continues in June when the Lions host the 34 contestants in the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pag-eant for lunch at the Muskegon Holiday Inn. Club members have the opportunity to meet the women who represent their communities throughout the state, hear

about their "platforms" and discovered their talents. This year also marked the 13th year the Muskegon Lions have sponsored a team in the East Muskegon Little League. As players finished the season, club members celebrated with their families by throwing a hot dog roast after the final game.

S ince this is my last issue as editor for The Pulse

I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge all

the wonderful people who have helped and

influenced me in this my swan song, or more

appropriately my lion song.

For me it started six years ago when Lion Stan

Hone from Rockford was heading south for part of the

winter. He needed a few guest writers for a public

relations column in The Pulse and he asked me! That’s

pretty much all it took and then a comment from fellow

club member, PDG Fran Osborne that the current

editor, Sandy Harz, was looking for a replacement after

a few years of penning The Pulse.

A little push from one and a lot of encourage-

ment from the other was what got me here. Along the

way Stan has always been my biggest cheerleader and

motivational support and I will always be grateful for

the confidence he had in me. Yet another supporter

has been Cheryl Anderson who has always been quick

to provide any information asked for or not, and for her

unwavering compliments and friendship guiding me

and so many others in our district. Then there are a

host of regular contributors whom I have come to rely

on for articles, information, positive comments and

fellowship: ID Dennis Cobler, PCT Ed Weesies and Lady

Dianna Robach to name but a few. There are also two

club administrators who regularly assist with

contributions, namely Lynda Devries from Dorr and Bill

Sutton from Lakewood. And how could I possibly

forget Percy Crothers snapping all those wonderful

pictures. Of course I think Percy took more pleasure in

clicking a picture of me every chance he could

knowing full well how I hate having my picture

taken.

There have also been a number of

District Governors who have ‘served’ and shaped

the newsletter in their own unique and distinctive

styles—from Rock Wood, Doug Schneider and

Diane Wehby to Rock again as well as Lloyd

Foster and incoming Julie May.

As I sit in the corner of my living room

writing this like I have so many times before, I

want to reach out and thank you all for making

this a labor of love for me, for it truly has been.

But alas it is time for change, for a fresh eye, a

new style in keeping with our new century of

service. Let us celebrate what has been the past

but look forward to a bright, new future both in

Lionism and in our District.

Regards always,

Sue
