I. Read Chapter Unit three in the social studies textbook Meeting Many People. Discuss why it is important to study history

II. Bring in some primary sources for the students to look at. Old photos, money, textbooks and a typewriter. Discuss how things were in the past.

III. Watch the Charlie Brown film “the Mayflower Voyagers” and read Across the Wide Dark Sea

IV. Discuss Native Americans and read aloud Crazy Horse’s Vision.

V. The students will be asked to talk to an older relative and find out about their heritage. Each student will be asked to write about what they learn and share it with the class.

Strand II ActivitiesStrand II ActivitiesI. Discuss the life of the pilgrims and how they lived. Have the

students draw a picture of what the pilgrims houses looked like.

II. Invite a guest speaker to address the class. Choose a speaker who represents a culture that is not a majority in the classroom. Allow the students to ask questions. Identify differences and similarities.

III. Read aloud books about Native Americans, European Americans, African Americans, Asian American and other groups in American. Let the students list differences and similarities.

IV. Give the students a map of the United States and have them investigate where different groups of Americans settled. Have the students glue people on the map to identify the groups.

V. Have the students discuss what is good for the classroom as opposed to what each student thinks is good for them. Establish a classroom code that includes all students.

I. The students will identify the seven continents and the four oceans and be able to name them. The continent song will be used to reinforce this knowledge.

II. Given a map of the world the students will plot the route used by the Mayflower in 1620.

III. The students will draw a map of the school and mark their classroom and the rooms where they have specials.

IV. The students will decide the best route to get to Disneyland, Disney World and Euro-Disney

V. The students will write to an American Service Person in Afghanistan.

I. The students will identify goods and services in the school. A list will be compiled and graphed on a bar graph.

II. The students will be given a worksheet and asked to identify whether it is a good or a service.

III. The students will list 10 things that they want or want to do. Each student will have to pick one item and write a paragraph with their ideas about how to get what they want. The paragraphs will be shared and critiqued by the class.

IV. The students will be asked to make a list of services that they can perform at school and at home.

V. The students will be asked to bring in newspaper, magazine or journal ads for goods. The goods will be graphed on a bar chart.

I. The students will simulate the presidential election. Elections will be held in the class to elect a class president and cabinet members.

II. The class rules will be analyzed to see if they are appropriate for the classroom structure.

III. The students will relate roles of authority in groups they belong to to local, state and federal government positions.

IV. The students will be asked to generate conflict rules for classroom disputes.

V. The head of the board of education will be invited to class to discuss what his job includes and what other jobs to which it is similar.

I. The students will be read The Value of Respect, The Story of Abraham Lincoln followed by a discussion of it’s contents and lessons.

II. The students will be read The Boy Who Cried Wolf and asked to write several sentences about what they think the boy should have done.

III. Group roles and activities will be used for reading circles. Each member of the group will be assigned a role and given a responsibility. Student group members will rate how each student performed their tasks.

IV. The students will pick up litter around the school. The amount of litter will be weighed and the origin of the litter will be discussed.

V. The students will peacefully manage conflict in the classroom. Non violent conflict management strategies will be presented and a worksheet will reinforce.
