Dr. Phimon Atsawasuwan, an assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, received the AAO Foundation’s 2015 Biomedical Research Award. Dr. Atsawasuwan’s award was based on his study, “The effect

of microRNA-29 on orthodontic tooth movement.”

Partnered with Dr. Xiaofeng Zhou, an associate professor in the College of Dentistry Department of Periodontics, Dr. Atsawasuwan will work to inves-tigate roles of microRNA during tooth movement, while Dr. Zhou will help with the technique of laser-captured micro-dissection and analysis of microRNA result. The researchers expect to gain an insight on how micro-RNA-29 plays roles in periodontal ligament cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts function during tooth movement. They will also investigate whether changes of level microRNA-29 will affect the rate of tooth movement in animals. The AAOF Biomedical Research Award allocates $30,000 for one year to each recipient. The award is designed to help orthodontic faculty conduct independent orthodontic and craniofacial biology research.

Dr. Robert James Bray of Atlantic City, New Jersey has been appointed to serve on the University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Bray was the AAO president for 2009-10. He is the immediate past president of the AAO Foundation and

currently serves as National Planned Giving Chair for the foundation. A past president of the Middle Atlan-tic Society of Orthodontists, he is now MASO’s direc-tor for the AAO Foundation. Dr. Bray has served for 20 years on the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry orthodontic faculty. He is also a visiting professor at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, where he received his master’s degree and orth-odontic certificate.

Council on Dental Practice Robert H. Ahlstrom New Investigator Award. The award highlights the crucial role of dental informatics. Dr. Taneva was honored for her paper, “3D Evaluation of Palatal Rugae for Human Identification Using Digital Study Models.” The project involved developing and utilizing a 3D approach for human verification and identification using the palatal rugae pattern. Her continued research aims to evalu-ate the matching process in identical and fraternal twins, siblings, and parents, and to determine longi-tudinal changes in palatal rugae individual patterns. Dr. Taneva envisions 3D digital study models obtained with intraoral or model scanners for diagnosis and treatment planning being “integrated in the personal electronic health record, which can be requested and accessed by forensic institutes and law enforce-ment.” Dr. Taneva will present her research at the 2015 ADA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
