In 2013, the Museum began the next chapter of a story 40 years in the

making. For the last four decades, we have offered the public high-quality

science education, world-renowned collections, and fascinating exhibits.

With each new year, however, comes new challenges that force us to think

outside the box, and look inside for the spirit of creativity that can only be

found in a museum. This past year was no different, but through expanded

programming and events, and exciting exhibits and displays, we faced those

challenges with energy, enthusiasm, and determination. We’re incredibly

excited to start our journey on the next 40 years with a renewed sense of

commitment to what we do and who we are as an institution.

The following pages include some of the exciting highlights that defined 2013,

and a sampling of what the future may hold as we begin the next chapter in

our storied history.

Curator of Birds Dr. Jean Woods interviewed by The News Journal about owl sightings throughout New Castle County. Over 50 people responded with owl sightings, and over 30 new database records for the Delaware Breeding Bird Atlas resulted.

African American Champions of Nature takes place, commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with special activities highlighting African Americans’ contributions to the field of natural history.

Glow: Living Lights opens, highlighting bioluminescence, a living organism’s ability to produce its own light. This fascinating special exhibit explores the questions of what bioluminescence is and how it differs from other forms of light.

Augmentation for Glow: Living Lights includes a small exhibit highlighting Curator of Mollusks Dr. Liz Shea’s work in the deep sea canyons of the Bear Seamount, including several examples of deep-sea organisms.

A photo exhibit titled “Butterflies at Bucktoe” goes on display in the Museum’s Mineral Hall, showcasing the photography of Harold Davis and the exquisite butterflies at the Bucktoe Preserve.

The Museum celebrates “National Bird Day” with a display in the Nature Nook highlighting the various bird species that migrate through the area at this time of year.

The Education Department acquires a new White-sided Bullsnake, nicknamed “Pearl,” as part of its animal outreach efforts.

In conjunction with Glow: Living Lights, the Museum hosts Ready, Set, Glow, an event aimed at exploring light in the natural world.

The Museum hosts its first Science After Dark event, an adult science program aimed at stirring engaging conversations in a fun, casual atmosphere.

Over 300 new shells are added to the Museum’s collection. Curator of Mollusks Dr. Liz Shea works with Dr. Rob Dillon, University of Charleston, to voucher three years’ worth of freshwater snails and bivalves collected by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) during their ongoing, long-term macrobenthic sampling program.

The Museum celebrates NanoDay, exploring the world at the nanoscale. This annual event highlighting this burgeoning science includes activities, games, and special guests.

Twenty-seven new trees are planted along Rt. 52 between the Museum and Country House as part of the National Scenic Byways program. The tree-planting effort restores the heavily-traveled route to Pierre S. DuPont’s vision of a “string of pearls” – the sycamore trees – along Kennett Pike.

The Museum completes installation of a shade awning on the patio as part of a grant from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

Curator of Birds Dr. Jean Woods returns to the field for the annual migration of Red Knots and other shorebirds. She tags and observes birds along the Delaware Bayshore collaboration with the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Geological Survey. Dr. Woods also serves as a team leader, training and organizing volunteers.

The Museum begins installation of a new roof that will reduce energy costs and provide improved insulation during the winter and summer months.

The Museum celebrates “Raptor Week,” highlighting the different types of raptor species that can be found locally.

J U N E

Dr. Liz Shea participates in a research cruise organized and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The cruise uses high definition still photography to find deep-sea corals in the Atlantic canyons.

Water’s Extreme Journey opens, inviting visitors into a fully interactive maze experience that engages through play, scientific inquiry, art, and action. The experience illuminates human impacts on the water cycle, while teaching how to contribute to healthy, safe water in the community and beyond.

Augmentation for Water’s Extreme Journey includes a small photo exhibit in collaboration with the Delaware College of Art and Design, featuring water-inspired subjects by their talented student artists.

The Museum hosts PNC Free Sunday Morning, allowing those that would not normally visit the Museum to visit at no cost, courtesy of PNC Bank.

The Museum participates in the Brandywine Museum & Gardens Alliance (BMGA) Treasure Trail Passport program, offering ticket holders the opportunity to visit 11 attractions throughout the Brandywine Valley for one price.

The Museum’s popular Summer Camps offer a new opportunity for campers ages 11-13 – spending the night at the Museum for a sleepover amongst the exhibits.

The Museum hosts an evening outdoors star gazing and learning about astronomical water signs with the Delaware Astronomical Society.

Curator of Mollusks Dr. Liz Shea organizes a symposium in honor of Dr. Malcolm Clarke, FRS, during the World Congress of Malacology. This two-day symposium presents over 25 speakers and is attended by over 100 individuals from around the world.

The Museum hosts Artisans’ Bank Dollar Tuesdays every Tuesday in August, thanks to generous support of Artisans’ Bank. This year marks the 14th year the Museum has partnered Artisans’ Bank to lower admission prices during this month-long promotion.

A U G U S T

Curator of Birds Dr. Jean Woods attends the joint annual meetings of the American Ornithologists’ Union and the Cooper Ornithological Society. As part of the four-day meetings, she attends nearly 80 presentations of the latest ornithological research, views dozens of research posters, and interacts with many colleagues.

S E P T E M B E R

As part of the same DNREC grant used to install the shade awning, the Museum installs outdoor interpretation and signage for the Larry F. Scott Nature Trail, the Butterfly Garden, and Wildflower & Native Grass Meadow. The signs will help educate visitors on the various habitats and wildlife surrounding the Museum.

The Museum hosts “Young Franken-scientists,” highlighting some of history’s most famous scientists, including Albert Einstein, Mary Anning, and Jane Goodall.

The Collections & Research Division hosts Winterthur’s Senior Objects Conservator Bruno Pouliot and 10 University of Delaware Art Conservation students to learn about the conservation of natural history objects.

The 7th Annual Wine & Dinosaurs presented by M&T Bank, the Museum’s annual fundraiser, is held with great success, raising nearly $50,000 for the exhibits, programs, and educational outreach held throughout the year.

Movie Night at the Museum, featuring “Night at the Museum,” is held in conjunction with Smithsonian Museum Day Live!.

Ice Age Imperials opens to the public. Using two full-scale dioramas, a series of interactive displays, and other educational components, the exhibit tells the story of a period in our planet’s history when the environment was dramatically different than we know it today.

The Museum introduces the “Curator’s Corner” web series, highlighting some of the lesser-seen sections of the Collections, and giving a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in areas of the Museum not open to the public.

The Museum displays a full cast of the plant-eating duckbill dinosaur Hadrosaurus foulkii, on loan from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia. A piece of paleontological history, the exhibit explores how scientists visually interpret what animals may have looked like in life based on fossilized remains.

The Collections & Research Division hosts 50 students from the University of Delaware Mammalogy class for a quiz on large North American mammals. They also explore a number of orders of mammals not found in North America, as well as Philippine counterparts to some species found in Delaware.

The Public Programming Department further develops the Science After Dark series and hosts “Science After Dark: Ice,” exploring the science of the Ice Age.

The Museum plays host to the Nikon Small World photomicrography exhibit with images from the 2013 competition. All 20 winning images in the competition are on display while the exhibit is on a national tour.

For the first time, the Museum hosts “Merry Munchies at the Museum,” a family breakfast event celebrating the holiday season.

In collaboration with the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and other partner institutions, Curator of Mollusks Dr. Liz Shea submits a $270,000 grant application to the National Science Foundation’s Advancing Digitization in Biological Collections program to finish computerization of the landsnail and freshwater bivalve collection, and to make all the data available via the web.

A holiday concert featuring the Cathedral Choir School of Delaware is held in the Museum’s Skylight Atrium, filling the galleries with the sounds of the holiday season.

The annual Dino Days presented by Bank of America is held on December 27 & 28, featuring a dramatically expanded lineup of activities and programs. The highlight of the two-day event is the introduction of live bird shows from Animal Behavior & Conservation Connections in the Museum’s Dinosaur Hall.

Public Programming

There was a dynamic shift in structure at the Museum in 2013, with the development and

implementation of the Public Programming Department. Following a growing trend for

museums to develop more engaging, visitor-focused events and programming, the Delaware

Museum of Natural History embarked on a new path in 2013. In March, the Museum welcomed

Jill Karlson to lead this new effort as the Director of Public Programming.

Charged with developing programming to support the Museum’s mission, Jill’s role

is designed to merge three formerly independent departments: Education, Exhibits, and

Communications into one larger, more encompassing department, Public Programming.

The thought behind this shift was that each of these departments would work as one cohesive

unit to provide clear, concise messaging to the public throughout the Museum. Public

Programming now features the Museum’s permanent exhibits, traveling exhibits, education

programs for all ages, and a communication plan that highlights the connection between all of

the Museum’s departments.

Communications

The Museum’s Communications Department works closely and collaboratively with each other

department to communicate with the public and area media, and to support the Museum’s programs,

activities, events, and mission.

Following the success of expanded programming in 2012, the Museum continued to offer visitors

an exciting array of programming and events. Through targeted and coordinated marketing efforts

with the Brandywine Museums & Gardens Alliance, Association of Science-Technology Centers,

and the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Museum continued to be a go-to

family destination in 2013. Family-friendly programming like Star Parties, Movie Nights, PNC Free

Sunday Mornings, Artisans’ Bank Dollar Tuesdays, Bank of America Museums On Us, and Smithsonian

Magazine’s Museum Day Live! provided opportunities for families to experience the Museum at an

affordable price.

In addition, the Museum’s summer offerings included continued appreciation for our nation’s active

duty military personnel through the Blue Star Museums Program. With the Museum in its sixth year

of participation, U.S. military and their families can look forward to enjoying a day at the Museum or

any one of over 3,000 museums, art centers, and exhibits across the country for free.

The Education Department, a key component of the Museum’s Public Programming

Department, strived to expand its horizons both inside and outside the Museum’s walls in

2013, with added programing and expanded educational offerings. Through tours, outreaches,

classes, special events, grants, and a variety of other educational programs, the Museum was

able to reach out to a greater community through a number of partnerships and collaborations.

These efforts were highlighted in the continuation of PNC’s Grow Up Great With Science

program, in its fourth year and responsible for facilitating and expanding the Museum’s

offerings to Head Start locations throughout New Castle County. The Museum also continues to

host Family Fun Nights and PNC Free Sunday Mornings, designed as ways to expand the reach

of the Museum to underserved populations.

The Museum added another successful partner in 2013 by collaborating with the Delaware

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Through a grant

from DNREC, the Museum was able to implement outdoor interpretation and signage for

the beautiful Larry F. Scott Nature Trail, the Butterfly Garden, and Wildflower & Native Grass

Meadow. The new interpretation was accompanied by the addition of a new patio awning, as

well as fencing surrounding the meadow.

In addition to continuing the many successful programs in place, such as school/group tours,

outreaches, birthday parties, Summer and Holiday Camps, and Scout Programs, the Education

Department was also excited to welcome new staff members at the end of 2013. Kari Lawrence,

Education Manager, and Cathy Perrotto, Assistant Education Manager, are both qualified and

experienced in science education and are tasked with the challenge of developing new partners

that will help the Museum grow and continue to be a resource for the community.

Working closely with other departments throughout the Museum, the Exhibits Department

develops engaging displays and exhibits. With the Museum’s special exhibits sponsored once

again through the generous financial support of the DuPont Company, the general public

enjoyed a variety of fascinating topics and subject matter.

The Museum’s three special exhibits for 2013 featured the glowing, alien-like world of creatures

that make their own light, the powerful impact of water, and the cold, prehistoric world of the

Ice Age. On display January 26 through May 27, and produced by Exhibit IQ, Glow: Living Lights

answered the questions of what bioluminescence is and how it differs from other forms of light.

Water’s Extreme Journey, on display June 15 through September 2, and created by the Seattle,

WA-based Minotaur Mazes, explored the water cycle and water conservation. The Museum

partnered with Stroud Water Research Center, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, and

University of Delaware’s Sea Grant College Program to highlight the unique aquatic habitats

these organizations work to protect.

From October 12 through January 5, 2014, Ice Age Imperials fascinated the public with lifelike

dioramas, real fossils, and amazing facts about what life was like for early humans. Produced by

Antiquities Company, the exhibit featured two large dioramas depicting a mother saber tooth

cat watching over her young and a pair of “paleo-hunters” approaching a woodland muskox.

Finishing out the year, the Museum played host to several smaller exhibits: The NSF International

Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge winners and the Nikon Small World 2013

photomicrography contest. In addition, a brand new permanent display was installed to add

much needed interpretation to the Museum’s “Insects of Delaware” mural, painted by local

artist Illiana Teixido.

Exhibits

The Museum’s signature fundraising event, Wine & Dinosaurs presented by M&T Bank, celebrated

its seventh successful year on Sunday, September 22. Adult friends and supporters were invited

to leave the kids at home to enjoy a very special afternoon at the Museum, raising nearly $50,000

to help keep education programs running and Museum doors open wide. Returning sponsors

M&T Bank, Proctor Heyman LLP, Weymouth, Swayze, & Corroon Insurance, Inc., NEIL, Cover and

Rossiter, Moore Brothers Wine Company, Ryan’s Wines & Spirits, The Wine & Spirit Company of

and elegant presentations. We are especially grateful to our Museum volunteers and a corps of

volunteers from BNY Mellon for making this event such a success.

Inspired by the amazing adaptations developed by creatures featured in the Museum, the 2013

annual appeal was renamed the Adaptation Fund. This now-classic campaign featured the

warthog in the spring and the Emperor Penguin at year’s end. Contributions to the Adaptation

Fund allowed our staff to create, produce and adjust Museum education programs to provide up-

to-date natural science information in a fun, inspiring atmosphere. We are deeply grateful to each

and every donor and are honored to have your support.

The Collections and Research Division provides year-round access to the Museum’s vast scientific

collections for scientists, students, artists, and others. In addition, they provide key support for the

Museum’s public programs, events, displays, and exhibits throughout the year.

In 2013, the Collections and Research Division saw robust numbers in visitation, information

requests, media interviews, and database searches. The staff also continued the difficult and time-

consuming task of cataloguing the Museum’s collections with the assistance of a passionate and

dedicated group of volunteers

At the start of the year, News Journal columnist Margo McDonough interviewed Curator of Birds

Dr. Jean Woods about owl sightings in the Brandywine Valley for an article that ran on January

27. Over 50 people responded with owl sightings, and over 30 new database records for the

Delaware Breeding Bird Atlas resulted. Additionally, Curator of Mollusks Dr. Liz Shea worked with

the University of Charleston’s Dr. Rob Dillon to voucher three years’ worth of freshwater snails and

bivalves collected by DNREC as part of an ongoing sampling program. As a result, over 300 new

Making her annual journey to the Delaware Bay in May, Dr. Woods conducted research on

shorebirds migrating through the area in collaboration with the Delaware Division of Fish and

Wildlife and the U.S. Geological Survey. Dr. Woods and her fellow researchers caught and

collected data from birds, as well as tracked marked birds throughout their stopover in the bay. Dr.

Woods also served as a team leader, training and organizing research volunteers. In early summer,

Dr. Shea participated in a research cruise organized and funded by NOAA. The cruise used high

definition still photography to find deep-sea corals in the Atlantic canyons and understand the

important characteristics of their unique habitat.

In July, Dr. Shea organized a symposium in honor of Dr. Malcolm Clarke, FRS, during the World

Congress of Malacology. This two-day symposium presented over 25 speakers and was attended

by over 100 individuals from around the world. Dr. Shea also worked with researchers at the Duke

University Marine Lab in preparing and submitting a grant application to the National Science

Foundation. The grant leverages the acoustic expertise at Duke and the cephalopod expertise at

the Museum to examine the cephalopod food sources available to pilot whales and tuna fish while

actively foraging.

In the fall, Winterthur’s Senior Objects Conservator Bruno Pouliot and 10 University of Delaware

Collections & Research

Howard Brokaw1916 - 2013

Howard P. Brokaw, a founding patron of the

Delaware Museum of Natural History and a

trustee for more than 40 years, passed away

at the age of 97 on December 20, 2013 in

Wilmington. Brokaw was the grandson of

the great American artist Howard Pyle, and

although not a professional ornithologist,

contributed greatly to ornithology and

bird conservation throughout his life. After

retiring in the 1970s from a distinguished

career in business, he chose to devote his

time to the not-for-profit sector.

In 2006, he received the American

Ornithologists Union (AOU) Marion

Jenkinson Service Award and was an

investing trustee of AOU for 25 years. He

also served on numerous boards of trustees,

including those of the Academy of Natural

Sciences of Philadelphia, the American

Bird Conservancy, the National Audubon

Society, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary,

Delaware Nature Society, Brandywine

Conservancy, as well as President, Fellow,

and Honorary member of the Delmarva

Ornithological Society. Howard will be

greatly missed and leaves a legacy of

passion, devotion, and respect for nature.
