A Very Long Metaphor for WWIICreated and Illustrated by

There are three types of people in our world: Small people, big people, and people in between (medium people). Each of these kinds of people sport different traits.

Small people are innocent. Small people aren’t very strong or intimidating, and don’t have much power. Small people don’t get a say in many things in the big, big world.

Big people are the toughest, and more often than not, the leaders. They’re big enough to tell the smaller people (and some medium-sized people) what to do and how to do it, even if what they say is wrong.

Finally, medium-sized people are a mix in-between of big and small. The role they play in the world depends on how they act; some big people end up doing great, wonderful things, and some end up doing small things.

This story is about all three of these folks. The story, in reality, was about a war that spread over the entire world.

The story started because some big people made some even bigger mistakes.

Surprisingly enough, this wasn’t the first world war that these people had. Not too long ago, all of these people fought because they didn’t agree with each other anymore, and broke very important promises.

After this war ended, a specific group of small and medium people were blamed as the cause of the war, since they had followed a big person and caused a lot of damage.

The big people that decided the blame told them that they had to give up almost everything they had! The group of small people had no choice – and because they lost the fight, they became hungry and hopeless.

Then, a big person stood up and said he could fix everything that had gone wrong. This person’s name was Adolf Hitler, and he seemed very nice to the group.

The group had found the answer to their problems, and eagerly accepted his help. Sure enough, the group, which was named Nazi Germany, became happy again.

Meanwhile, something else was happening in Germany. A group of small people, called Jewish people, were mistreated very badly by Hitler.

Most of them didn't make it, and those who did were very unhappy.

Back in the USA, a smaller group of medium people called women were left in charge of the jobs that the men couldn't do.

The women cooked and cleaned, but worked in factories as well; it was tough work, but the women were tough, too.

In another place, a medium-sized person named Franklin Roosevelt had taken all of the small people in his group, called the USA, and fenced them off from the rest of the world. He wanted them to be safe, but it didn’t last long.

Soon enough, a group of big people called Japan attacked Franklin’s group.

Now, Franklin was forced to pay attention to what was happening outside his fence.

And boy, was the outside world a mess! Franklin’s group had been giving and loaning to another medium group, Britain, to help fight the big group known as Nazi Germany.

But Franklin’s idea of lending weapons and supplies wasn’t working, and Nazi Germany kept getting stronger.

After seeing this, and having felt the true threat of the war upon his group, Franklin led the USA into battle, alongside Britain and a group called France, and later on, Russia.

Many battles were waged in this war, and three of these battles became very important to the course of the world's history.

The first was called the Battle of Midway. This is where the USA attacked the big Japan with planes in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Japan lost, something previously unthinkable. The USA was victorious!

The second of these three was called D-Day, and was a battle on the shore of Normandy beach against the troops of the big man Hitler.

Troops from the USA and Britain groups of medium people fought very hard, and won!

The final battle was the Fall of Berlin. The Fall of Berlin was when the big Russia attacked Hitler, surrounding him and winning easily.

That battle was when Hitler fell, and no longer had power over the small people of Germany.

People in the USA rejoiced. Nazi Germany had been defeated, and that meant they could focus on toppling the group Japan for good.

As punishment for Japan's attack against them, the USA made two big bombs, and dropped them on two cities in Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombs hurt between 60,000 and 80,000 small and medium people, and Japan decided to give up on fighting.

One thing they didn't realize, though, was just how much damage the bomb had done to poor Japan. Small and medium people had been very hurt, and suffered unimaginably, all because their big person had made some bad choices.

Then, to add on to the damage, some USA small people were put into work camps by the USA…

…only because their family had come from Japan.

The war was over. Lots of small and medium people had gotten hurt, and it was very sad. However, the small and medium people of the USA and Britain had won! The big people didn't win this time; it wasn’t their turn anymore!
