It has been said that the Sac-rament of Confirmation is the for-gotten Sacrament. We forget, that like the Apostles in the Upper Room, with Mary, who received the Holy Spirit, we too had our Pentecost at our Confirmation.

We forget that the Sacrament of Confirmation includes the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, un-derstanding, knowledge, fortitude, counsel, piety and fear of the Lord. This sacrament is part of the rite of initiation because it perfects and strengthens the infused virtues given at Baptism. They're divine aids that allow one to "sail" ver-sus "row" in the spiritual life.

An article I read describes these fruits:

The gift of wisdom imparted at Confirmation gives the person a divine perspec-tive on the mysteries of God. It fur-ther directs one's life in accord with that perspective.

The gift of knowledge is sometimes called the science of the saints. It affects one's perception of the whole spectrum of created things. A person can then under-stand the purpose of such created things from God's point of view in-sofar as they lead him to God.

The gift of fortitude is a spe-cial strengthening of the will, allow-ing a person to stand strong before difficult problems without caving to pressures that would normally break the person.

Counsel is the gift that per-fects the virtue of prudence. It

enables a person to judge promptly and rightly — a sort of supernatural intuition as to what should be done, especially in difficult situations.

Piety is the divine gift per-fecting the virtue of religion, which is the practice of justice toward God. It renders a person loyal to God and the things of God, arising not so much from studied effort or ac-quired habit but from an internal quickening.

Fear of the Lord is the gift that confirms the virtue of hope and inspires profound respect for the

majesty of God. It protects a person from sin by instilling in him a dread of offending the Lord out of love for Him and imparts to his soul a strong confidence in God's divine protection.

When Bishop Morli-no was here for Confirma-tion a couple of weeks ago, he said that we can tell very clearly if the fruits of the Ho-

ly Spirit are active in one’s life: do I go to Holy Mass every Sunday, am I attentive to making a regular con-fession?

Pope Benedict said in 2012: “Jesus, risen and ascended into Heav-en, sent his Spirit to the Church so that every Christian might participate in his own divine life and become his valid witness in the world. The Holy Spirit, breaking into history, defeats aridity, opens hearts to hope, stimulates and fosters in us an interior maturity in our relationship with God and with our neighbor.”

Come, Holy Spirit,

STEWARDSHIP National Combined Collection

This weekend the National Combined Collection is being conducted across the diocese. Enclosed in this bulletin is a brochure explaining all of the individual collections and an envelope to make your donation, which can be placed in next week’s regular collection. Stewardship Reflection for Pentecost

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6

All of us are blessed, regardless of our own individual circumstances; God has given each of us many gifts. How we use those gifts in Stewardship is our gift back to God. For God’s plan to work, each must do what we are called to do and guess what – we are not all called to do the same thing!

This week we recognize and express our appreciation to the faithful stewards who served as catechists and assistants in our Religious Education and Faith Formation Ministries this year. We are grateful for their willingness to share their time and talent in passing on the Catholic faith and sharing their love for Jesus.
