Critique May 10, 2018Notes submitted by Sharon Bongers; photos by Renee Lippa

Frances Hessels introduced Susan Al-lan, our critic for this meeting.

A graduate of the Alberta College of Art, Susan has a studio located in Canada where she does primarily non-objective abstract paintings in acrylic paint and mixed media on paper. She has a number of commissioned pieces in residential and commercial locations. She also collaborates on projects with interior designers and architects on projects around the cities of Edmonton and Calgary.

Susan's work can be seen on her web site at susanallanart.com.

Joyce McCoy - I thought this had been painted on silk. It has the feel of being planned. Intriguing, there is a wax feel to it. Explore more! Do lots.

Frances Hessels - Well executed, I don't have too much to say about this one. Theonlything-thepenlooksflat.Thesubject is so strong, it feels warm. Nice depth, I can feel the sunlight.

Maureen Woolley - I noticed pockets of nice things, but the trees stop so abruptly. Consider the size of your format, trees can't just stop. Needs more contrast.

Gail - I was intrigued here too. you have done it subtly. Well executed, good contrast. Seems very immediate, I like the framing. Very good, strong. Sharon Bongers - This is all about the

eye, good painting. The grass is not believable to me.

Kerralee Nelson - Very airy, landscape feel. There is a sensitivity factor to how things are applied. Someone can be made to feel uncomfortable when drawn in to take a closer look, so be aware of that.

Critique, continued on pg.4

June, 2018 Edmonton Art Club Page 4

Johanne Septou - It felt to me that you had latched on and kept going. The size of the trees are in question. It is a little weak in the bottom left, strokes seem to drop off to the left. Keep exploring. Trytofindavarietyofwaystodotrees.

Jasmin Alstad - You were just having a blast, this is all about the paint, with asuggestionofflowers.Ithinkitisre-ally fun, not much story telling. I would studythisalotandfileawaythoughts, and as you are working those things will come back to you.

Diana Panizzon - This is a challenging subject matter, a lot of it is all the same. The road sides are too uninteresting, they need more detail. There are some wonderful sensitive areas.

Barb Stachow - I think it is a lovely drawing. Think about the size of your format, the mane falls off the page. In-vite people in to your painting. Really wonderful work around the eye.

Critique, continued from pg.3

Renee Lippa - I was intrigued with this one, you have some hard edges, the sand is delightful. Technically you are very good. You command a person to take a look, and if anything is off, it will be seen. Well executed.

Helen Richards - I feel in the upper left more information is needed. I enjoyed the handling of the paint. The size of strokes on the 2 mountains are the same.

Marge - You are having a conversation with paint. It's explosive, dust stuck in the middle. It looks like you had fun. It could have more sensitivity.

Critique, continued on pg.5

Penny Lamnek - What came to mind - you could illustrate books. I could feel the quality of the paint. Overall intrigu-ing. Paper edges could be sharper. Good composition.

June, 2018 Edmonton Art Club Page 5

Myrna Wilkinson - You have handled this well. Be careful with varnish on acrylics, you can loose some texture with varnish. Nice pallet, you handled things nicely. It is a tight little painting. Some really nice painting.

Critique, continued from pg. 4

Ruth Baker Bailey - This is intriguing, very immediate. I think it is a lovely little painting. I think you have caught it just right. Nice painting on the rocks. To say anything at all, the horizon line, and the water is a little muddy.

Helen Davies - You are exploring paint here. It's a little highly contrasted, a little unsettled. There are pockets of interest-ing paint work. Keep on working, put it out there.

Seraya Smit - Your work is as much about the frame as the painting. Your paintings are design oriented. Lots of layers, there is a luminous quality. Take care for it not to become cliche'.

Anne McCartney - This has a photo-graphic feel, it is intriguing. It has a feel of particles, strong. I feel the iron oxide. Good work. Do more, do more.

Linda Nelson - I like that you painted the edge. Very bold, for me it seems to beonsomeplane.Domoreflowers, andlook at the negative space.

Rhea Jansen - Some jewel piece here. This is the kind of subject matter where you paint the negative space and the light and theflowers just happen. It'sdelightful.

This includes a variety of components such as the development of training modules for staff and mem-bership. To support this goal, CARNA seeks Indigenous artistry to be used in its learning modules as well as educa-tional materials.
