Flu shots

Its time again to talk about flu shots. Each year doctors offices begin to offer vaccinations forinfluenza in late August or September. Since there are often misconceptions about flu shots, we

would like to take this opportunity to answer some common questions.

1. Im healthy, do I really need a flu shot? The answer is yes! Influenza is a serious illness, and in

the best case scenario you will be quite ill with high fevers, cough, and body aches that can last

over a week. Most people with influenza miss several days of work. Even for healthy people,

influenza can be a deadly illness. If you are a pregnant woman, over the age of 50, or have a

chronic medical condition including asthma, heart disease and diabetes, you are at even higher

risk. The same is true of children, particularly younger than 2 years old. If you are a health or home

care provider, it is your duty to get your flu shot to protect your patients.

2. I had a flu shot and I still got the flu! This has two parts. First, many illness are incorrectly

labeled the flu, especially the concept of stomach flu. Stomach flu usually refers to somesort of illness with diarrhea and vomiting. This is not the influenza that the flu shot covers. Influenza

is an illness with high fevers and upper respiratory symptoms. In fact, most adults dont really

have diarrhea or vomiting with influenza, although children can. Flu shots only vaccinate for influenza.

There are thousands of other viruses that cause the common cold, and bacterial sinus infections

and pneumonia will still cause illness even in persons who did get a flu shot. So yes, you can still

get sick. Second, flu shots are not perfect. This has to do with the fact that influenza is a very

tricky virus and is able to change its DNA very easily. Therefore, there are different strains

circulating each year. The World Health Organization does extensive research before they pick the

3-4 strains that they feel will be prominent in our area of the world each year. If another strain

comes to town , you can still get the flu. It is estimated that a flu shot is 60 % effective in years

where there is a good match and 40% when there is not.

There is some evidence that if you have had a flu shot you

will be less sick even if you do get influenza.

3. You should wait until November/ the first frost/after

Halloween to get your flu shot. This is currently being

challenged as newer studies have shown at least 6-9 months

of effectiveness after the flu shot, especially in younger

individuals. So dont wait!

4. Im allergic to eggs, so I cant

get the flu shot. It depends. If youregg allergy is not severe, you may

be able to. Discuss this with your

doctor. There are newer flu

vaccines in development that are not

made from eggs but will not be

widely available this flu season.
