ACROSS THE DESKBy Whitey & Robin Noll
It has been a busy January and February is looking to
be even busier. Starting out this first weekend is the
Roots & Blues Festival in Lancaster over the 6th and
7th. Rich Ruoff has a music filled weekend with the
Roots and Blues music of the world gathering together in
Lancaster to please live music appetites to the full. You
can check out their website for the details or see the ad in
last month’s issue.
Also this same weekend is Gettysburg Rocks
Gettysburg Rocks is 30 hours of live music including
150+ bands across 12 venues in Gettysburg, PA over
February 6th, 7th and 8th, 2015. Bald Rob Experience
presents Gettysburg Rocks, 150+ bands across 12
venues in Gettysburg, PA over February 6th, 7th and 8th,
2015. Gettysburg Rocks is a fundraiser and all money
raised will be donated to The Four Diamonds Fund via
Penn State Mont Alto’s THON group, supporting
children battling cancer. So the first week of February
you have a multitude of live music choices to make.
Let’s hope the weather cooperates so everyone can enjoy
the sights and sounds. Both events support live music.
Not to mention all your favorite clubs that provide live
entertainment every week. There is absolutely no reason
to stay home unless we would get snowed in. After this
past weekend many of you will be anxious to get out
there and get the dust off of those dancing shoes.
It is finally here, the event that I personally look
forward to every year...the MILLENNIUM MUSIC
CONFERENCE & SHOWCASE!! The 19th Annual
Millennium Music Conference & Showcase will be
held February 19th thru the 22nd at the Best Western
Premier, the Central Hotel and Conference Center
(located of the Union Deposit exit) and 30 showcase
venues in and around Harrisburg, PA. The conference
features two afternoons of music business panels, clinics,
workshops, networking, day stages, one-on-one
mentoring and demo listening sessions, and industry
trade show. At the industry trade show Pennsylvania
Musician Magazine will be hosting an Open Mic Stage
where muscians can come and perform a few songs and
announce where their showcases are going to be.
Performing on the PA Musician stage during the
conference helps many of those who hear them decide to
attend that performers showcase later on in the evening.
In the evenings the event celebrates new music with
three nights of showcase performances featuring over
300 original acts at 30 live music venues in and around
Harrisburg, PA. Since 1997, this conference & showcase
has become one of the premier music events on the East
Coast. MMC has educated and showcased thousands of
independent acts and artists. Music industry
professionals attend as panelists, speakers, mentors,
exhibitors and talent scouts to network, do business and
share their experience with musicians, registrants and
conference attendees. There are also many marketing
opportunities available for musicians, exhibitors,
sponsors and industry. The local community is invited to
join in the celebration of new music, emerging talent,
independent artists as all showcase performances are
open to the public, the majority are free and several
stages are all ages. Showcases will generally start after
6pm on Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st.
I do love music but unfortunately I don’t take the time
to go out and enjoy it. This is the weekend where I can
meet and hear all kinds of wonderful music and actually
meet the people I deal with all year long. Please stop by
our table and sign up for the Open Mic stage. We don’t
have set times; you just stop by and see Rachel Rocks
and she’ll get you on stage as soon as she can. I think the
one year we were blessed to hear over 48 performers in
the two days on the stage and many more in the evening,
as we all split up to hear as many bands as we can.
Thank you to the John Harris Group and all the
wonderful sound crews and musicians who make it all
happen and THANK YOU TO THE FANS who support
such great events. To attend the actual conference there
is a fee but to attend the showcases at night a majority of
them are free, so come out and treat your ears to new and
original music. You never know who you’re going to
discover. On page 14 in this issue you can see the entire
list of the conference times and panels and then
following is the list of venues and times of their
performances. Please check it out and come and join us.

presenting and creating great Jazz events since 1980.
They are regular supporters of the Pennsylvania
Musician Magazine and work with the music
community to support up and coming musicians. They
are supported in large part by their members and are
currently hosting a membership drive. In an effort to
increase their membership in their 35th year as Central
PA’s jazz service organization, they are offering a chance
for a grand prize of $1000 to anyone who becomes a
new member or any former member who renews their
membership in the Central PA Friends of Jazz. Names
will be entered in a drawing to be held at the third
Spring Series Concert at H.A.C.C. on May 31st - new
or renewing Student, Regular and Patron member names
will be entered once - new or renewing Sponsor, Donor
and Corporate members names will be entered twice.
There will be several runner-up prizes as well.
Already a member of CPFJ? Current members who
help us sign up new members will have their names
entered in the drawing once for every new member that
they refer.
Becoming a member of CPFJ is easy. It can be done
online or by calling the CPFJ office at 717-540-1010 or,
better yet, sign up at the Membership Table at their next
concert. All new or renewing member(s) of CPFJ get
ticket discounts when they join, even on the day of a
concert.
The Central PA Friends of Jazz has been the jazz
service organization in our area since 1980. CPFJ has
produced concerts and jazz festivals featuring world
renowned jazz musicians, helped to promote our own
talented area artists, and provided educational
opportunities for our aspiring young jazz artists and
listeners of all ages. You have probably had many
memorable experiences at their concerts and festivals
throughout the years. In just the past year alone, they
have brought you pianist Cyrus Chestnut and his
tribute to Dave Brubeck, rising star vocalist Cecile
McLorin Salvant, and organist Joey DeFrancesco...as
well as many other world-class jazz musicians.
Membership is the life blood of CPFJ organization and
has been growing steadily during the past few years.
They need to sustain their efforts to promote jazz in
Central PA in the years to come and attract new folks to
CPFJ! They believe the surest resource they have to
accomplish this is their loyal enthusiastic membership
and the avid jazz fans in Central PA. They are confident
that there are many jazz aficionados who just need a
nudge to re-join or become a brand new member.
So don’t delay, the Spring Concert Series is rapidly
approaching - March 1st we will feature bassist
Christian McBride and his Trio and we will have many
great artists in our Series this year. Please support this
great American Music and Good Luck! Call 717-540-
1010 or join on line at: www.friendsofjazz.org.
There is so much music happening in PA that it is
mind boggling. Please go through the paper and check
out all the ads and support your favorite musicians and
clubs.
Happy Birthday to Missy Noll February 7th and Kate
Green who turns 15 on February 23rd! Enjoy your

OUT & ABOUTby RACHEL ROCKS!
February! It’s my biggest “Out and About” month of the
year! This month will be packed with craziness because the
Millennium Music Conference is back in town for the 19th
year in a row! Mom and I will be back at the trade show in full
force, and I heard that we will be sponsored by Dr.
McGillicuddy again!! We will also once again be hosting our
Open Mic stage. This year our sound will be provided by
Antique Digital Pianos. If you want to see a unique sound
board, stop by our booth and check out Dave Russell’s latest
technological trick! This guy is always up to something. Our
Acoustic Stage is going to be first come, first served this year,
so if you have time to sing us a song or two, please come see
me at our booth to sign up at the MMC. Remember you do
have to have credentials and be registered to attend the
conference to come to the trade show. If you’re not registered
just because you can’t afford it, let me know and I’ll see what I
can do at [email protected]. I can’t wait to see
what amazing talent shows up this year!! Before I get too
excited talking about what’s happening this month, let me tell
you about all of the great talent I saw this past month.
It all started out with a trip down to the Field House in Etters
with my good friends Patty and Sabrina to see Fierce. Fierce
is an all female party band based out of Lancaster. When we
arrived the party was definitely already started at The Field
House; the dance floor was packed and the tables were full of
people having a great time. Marti Miller has an amazing
voice. She just continues with her amazing range all night long
impressing you more and more with every song. They had a
special guest tonight, their friend Teri, was visiting from Texas
and took over lead vocals for a song. Fierce does a great job at
sharing the spotlight with their talented friends and fans that
come out to their shows. Fierce has quite a following
everywhere I’ve seen them. If you want to have a good night
out on the town, check out their schedule in this issue and get
out there and party with them soon!
I finished off the night by stopping out at Double K for
Banished for Life’s last set. Doug, Steve, and Sam are the
only three members of Banished for Life now, but it’s amazing
what songs they can cover with only the three of them.
Banished for Life had the whole room up and dancing and
having a great time til the very end. These guys have been
friends for life and it really shows with their amazing
connections and energy on the stage.
On Christmas Day Santa brought me a Smart Phone!! It’s my
very first Smart Phone and I’m still learning how to use it, but I
have to say I’m loving it more than I thought I would. When I
deliver the magazines it’s usually an 8-10 hour day and it gets
very boring driving the same route. This year with my phone I
was able to take pictures and communicate with people on
Facebook between stops. It was very entertaining. Right before
I headed to Lancaster, Darrell posted on his page that Deezle
Church was playing at Riverside Camping Assoc. in
Lancaster. I’ve been wanting to check that place out, so with
the guys there it was a perfect opportunity. I googled the
directions and found it. Thank goodness for Google, I would’ve
never expected it to be where it was, but I found it. The
Riverside is huge inside. It was the Friday right after New
Year’s so the crowd was a little thin, but the people that were
there were loving the music. Deezle Church’s shows are few
and far between, but I love catching these guys whenever and
wherever I can. They mainly play southern rock, but throw in
some good ole’ country too, especially at a venue like
Riverside. I’m glad their show started at 8 and I was able to
catch them as I was passing through. I couldn’t stay too long
because it was already a really long day and I still wasn’t
home, but I’m glad I stopped in to check it out.
The following weekend I went to the Abbey Bar at ABC
with my friend Kristin for a special Singer/Songwriter night of
music. When I arrived Dean Blackstock was playing. He’s just
a solo guy, but he has one heck of a voice. His set was a great
start to the night. The next group of the night was Scott
Peoples. Scott was playing tonight with Jeff on drums, and
Keath on bass ukulele. It was my first time seeing a bass
ukulele as part of a show. It does definitely help add in a whole
different dynamic to the band. Scott’s songs have great stories
Continued on page 12...

Out and About Continued....
behind them. I think my favorite tonight was “Is it Too Late” a song written about his son. Scott
Peoples is getting out there and playing at a lot of new venues. Check out his schedule in this
issue and see where you can check them out next, you won’t be disappointed!
After Scott’s set we zoomed to Colonial Lounge to hear the Nate Myers Trio. When we
arrived the bar was packed with people bopping along and enjoying the music. There isn’t much
room to dance at the Colonial Lounge, but there were definitely some people literally dancing in
their seats! It was one of their last shows before they headed down to Memphis Tennessee for the
big blues competition. They unfortunately didn’t make it to the finals at the competition, but they
had a lot of fun and made some new fans in the process! At the Colonial Lounge the guys were
celebrating Chad’s birthday and having a great time! Nate even set down the harmonica and
switched to the kazoo for a song! To end the night Nate played one of my personal faves, “Just Be
There” with just him and an acoustic guitar, that’s always a special treat! Nate Myers is playing
all around the area all different nights of the week. Check out their schedule at
www.natemyers.com and see where they are playing near you!
The next night I headed out to Double K for Nacho Daddy. Nacho Daddy is a newer
advertiser, and I’m glad I had the chance to get out there and support them. The Double K was
rockin’ when I arrived, and they were even playing their “calmer” acoustic set. There was a large
group of people there celebrating the safe homecoming of their soldier Curt, who just arrived
home from the Navy, and who was celebrating his 21st birthday! It was quite the party! I’m so
grateful to all of our troops and their families for the sacrifices they make for our safety and
freedoms! Nacho Daddy did a great job including Curt who liked to get up there and help sing. I
know that’s not easy for bands to do, but they went with the flow, and everyone had a great time in
the process! Check out Nacho Daddy’s ad in this issue and see where they will be rockin’ next!
It was definitely a month of staying local. It’s hard when I get such a late start to make it
anywhere before the music is over, so again I headed down to Double K where Single Barrel was
on the stage. Single Barrel has some familiar faces, Chris DellaPorta and Bob Morris from
Smokin Gunnz, and they also have Ron Emmanuel on bass, and Ginger Lyons on guitar. Single
Barrel is out there playing the songs you don’t get to hear on the radio. The “outlaw” songs of
southern rock, country, and even some good ole rock ‘n’ roll! Great artists that you’ve rarely even
heard about like Blackberry Smoke, Dwight Yoakam, Shooter Jennings, etc. It’s awesome to see
Chris taking the lead of this band, singing most of the vocals, and Bob is there backing him up.
Chris has a great voice and it’s great to see it being used! If you want to hear a band of great
musicians that aren’t out there playing the same set list everyone else is playing, Single Barrel is
definitely the band to see.
A fun family event we went to this past month was The Winter Fling on Main Street in
Hummelstown. They closed down Main Street and had a big street festival. It was tons of fun for
the whole family with free games for the kids, hot chocolate, wine and beer tastings for the adults,
and live music for everyone! The band was The Heavy Push. I only recognized the drummer,
Ffej, who used to play with Herbie. The band did a great job playing through the cold and
keeping the people entertained. Lucky for them it was actually a pretty mild night. It’s always cool
to have live music at these kinds of family friendly events.
The last band of the month was Steel at Double K. I’ll tell ya, my children have seriously been
tuckering me out! I was zonked out, sound asleep, and before I knew it my husband was shaking
me, and says, “This is the 6th and final time I’m trying to wake you up, Steel is at Double K and
you’re going to be mad at me if you don’t wake up and go see them…” The sad part is, he’s
probably right. Not that I’d be mad at him, just bummed and mad at myself. I love rockin’ out at
Steel shows and seeing all of the members of the Steel Nation rockin’ out and having a good night
on the town. It doesn’t matter where or when these guys are playing, they have a great following
of some of the nicest people ever created! So I arrived shortly after midnight and had a great time
as usual, headbanging, singing, and dancing along! Steel is a band that is always having a great
time on the stage, involving their fans every step of the way! It was also Kathi and Jeannie’s
birthdays, so we had even more reasons to celebrate! It was a good time as usual, and I am glad
my husband persevered and woke me up!
Speaking of my
husband. I feel awful
that I never wished
him a Happy
Birthday last month!!
He turned the big 4-0..
maybe I’m just in
denial that I’m
married to someone so
old!!! Hahaha!!!! He’s
always been by my
side with this whole
“Rachel Rocks’
craziness and has encouraged me to keep going even tho my heart-strings get pulled quite
frequently to stay home with my kiddos. He knows how much I love going out, and he supports
me 100%. You never see him ‘Out and About’ unless he’s forced. I think the last time he was out
was my 30th birthday! Ha!
Well that’s all for this month. I will be hanging out at the MMC February 19th, 20th, and 21st.
Please stop by our booth all day Friday or Saturday. I’d love to meet you. You know me, I’ll be
giving out free hugs and hopefully some other yummy goodies from Dr. McGillicuddy. If you’re
in town, I highly encourage you to come help Stuff the Buzz Bags on Thursday night at 6pm. It’s
a great way to get started socializing and finding out the ins and outs of the conference. There is
also a great Kick-Off Party at O’Reilly’s Pub, the restaurant right inside the hotel at 8pm! Don’t
miss a moment of the fun!! Get the party started right!!! Hope to see ya there!
That’s all for this month. If you see me Out and About please stop me and say Hi. It’s always
fun meeting new people, but warning, I’m a hugger!! I hope you all have a great and safe month.
Don’t forget to check out our website, www.pamusician.net to see even more Hot Shots in color!
And please… SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC and BUSINESSES!!!

February, 2015 PENNSYLVANIA MUSICIAN MAGAZINE 13
NATIONALS By Eric HoffmanGreetings Rockers N Rollers! 2015 began with Funny Money’s
final performance on New Years Eve in Hagerstown, MD.
Funny Money was founded in 1996 as a band who play a mix
of KIX covers as well as original material. Through the years
the band’s line up changed with a total of 10 members. The
finale consisted of three present KIX members; Steve
Whiteman, Jimmy Chalfant and Mark Schenker and also
included guitarist Dean Cramer. With the popularity and
resurgence of KIX this past year, Whiteman said their schedule
is too full in 2015 to devote time to Funny Money. The show
was unbelievable, almost like a private concert in the small
intimate Delmar Inn. Funny Money spent time enjoying time
with their fans after the show, something they say isn’t as easy
with a KIX event. KIX return to Lancaster’s Chameleon on
Feb 27th.
It was off to Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on Feb 11th for
one of indie’s hottest bands, Future Islands. Recently voted
best live band by online publication Consequence of Sound. A
small tour jaunt consisting of 6 sold-out in shows in 3 cities:
Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Future Islands are an
American synth-rock band based in Baltimore, by way of North
Carolina, with a hugely passionate singer, Samuel T. Herring.
The band is currently playing a string of festival dates in
Australia and return to the States in April. For a true orientation
of Future Islands check out their David Letterman
performance from March 4, 2014.
York’s Dirt Cheap annihilated Fat Daddy’s on Feb 16. The
AC/DC influenced band has made a slight band change with
Kip Forbes of Leadfoot filling in for Larry “Bugs” Garland
on bass. The replacement seems a very smooth transition with
Forbes fitting perfect with Dirt Cheap. The band is gaining
quick recognition and will open for National artists KIX on Feb
27th at Lancaster’s Chameleon. It was also nice to catch
Pocket Rockit at Big Woody’s in Harrisburg on Feb 9th. The
two-piece cover band of singer/guitarist Joey Dalto and
drummer Jason Parks, give some real credit to popular songs.
Phil Cannizzaro of American Posse and Greg Folsom joined
Pocket Rockit for a few songs and formed a somewhat
Echoburn reunion of which all four musicians were apart of.
NATIONALS NEWS !
Original Grateful Dead members: Mickey Hart, Bill
Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will come together in
Chicago for three glorious nights this summer. Being called
“Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead” will
take place July 3-5 at Soldiers Field. Jerry Garcia’s daughter
Trixie Garcia announced the good news on Dead50.net.
Joining the Dead veterans will be Phish-man Trey Anastasio
on guitar, Ratdog/The Dead/Further keyboardist Jeff
Chimenti and Bruce Hornsby, who played more than 100
shows with the Grateful Dead, on piano. This event also marks
the 20th anniversary of the final Grateful Dead concert in 1995
at the very same Chicago venue.
Rich Robinson has released a statement saying The Black
Crowes are no more. “It is with great disappointment and regret
that after having the privilege of writing and performing the
music of The Black Crowes over the last 24 years, I find
myself in the position of saying the band has broken up.” It
appears he has a few issues regarding how his brother wanted to
do business, “I love my brother and respect his talent but his
present demand that I must give up my equal share of the band,
is not something that I could agree to.” The band has been on
hiatus since completing its 2013 tour, but fans always hoped
that Rich and his brother Chris would reunite the Crowes.
The Dave Matthews Band have set a May-September
Summer tour. Matthews and his bandmates will continue with
the two sets per night, a format praised as “even when it’s Dave
Matthews opening for Dave Matthews, there can’t be enough
Dave Matthews in a night.” Playing outdoor venues, the Dave
Matthews Band visit Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden,
NJ on June 26-27.
Katy Perry will team with Lenny Kravitz at the Super Bowl
halftime show Sunday, Feb. 1 game in Glendale, Arizona.
Perry has dominated the charts since releasing her debut in
2008, including 10 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
She’s currently on her Prismatic World Tour. Kravitz has sold
more than 38 million albums worldwide and has several
Grammys to his credit.
Guitarist Slash has filed for divorce from his wife of 13 years.
Court documents filed cite irreconcilable differences for Slash
and Perla Hudson’s split. Slash’s real name is Saul Hudson.
The couple have two sons, 10-year-old Cash and 12-year-old
London. The 49-year-old musician has had success as a solo
star and in the bands Velvet Revolver and Guns N’ Roses, with
whom he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
2012.
Bono says he now has a titanium elbow and may never play
guitar again due to injuries suffered in a New York City cycling
accident. The 54-year-old U2 frontman said the “recovery has
been more difficult than I thought.” He then added that his
bandmates – The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen –
“have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization
are depending on this.” Bono is hoping to be ready for a U2
tour due to start in May.
Motley Crue have announced the last leg of their ‘Final
Tour.’ The band has chosen to play 34 additional North
American dates in 2015, in honor of the 34 years they’ve been a
band. Alice Cooper will be the band’s very special guest on all
dates. The tour visits Hershey Giant Center on Aug 11,
Philadelphia Wells Fargo on Aug 14 and Baltimore Royal
Farms Arena on Aug 26.
One Direction proved it was the biggest band on the planet
with its $282.2 million in gross ticket sales, dwarfing the
competition, according to Pollstar’s exclusive Top 20
Worldwide Tours report for 2014. One Direction sold more than
3.4 million tickets – more than double that of runner-up Justin
Timberlake. JT brought in $184.7 million in gross ticket sales.
The Rolling Stones’ ranked No. 3 on the Top 20 chart, thanks to
generating $165.1 million in gross ticket sales and selling a total
of 862,361 tickets. Katy Perry is the most successful female
artist on tour, ranking No. 4 with $153.3 million in gross ticket
sales. The husband and wife co-bill of Beyoncé and Jay Z
brought in $109.7 gross million, ranking at No. 5.

THEPROFESSOR’S“LIVE REVIEWS”
By Jim Price While the stretch of winter after New Year’s Day can tend to
be a bit of a drag, this month’s 19th annual Millennium Music
Conference will provide welcome relief. I again look forward
to this year’s Millennium, taking place at the Best Western
Premier, the Central Hotel and Conference Center in
Harrisburg. I eagerly anticipate the two-day business
conference, trade show, acoustic stage, the showcases, the
opportunity to discover new musical talent, and camaraderie as
I hang out with my fellow PA Musician cohorts and touch base
with friends old and new.
The recent holiday season provided some special and unique
live music highlights. Preceding Christmas, Pellegrine’s in
Altoona hosted a special Christmas edition of their weekly
Wednesday Jam Night. Participating bands and musicians
received T-shirts and other gifts if they performed at least one
Christmas song. Some of the results included Phil Baskin’s
solo acoustic version of Emerson Lake & Palmer’s “I Believe
in Father Christmas,” Phil backing a female patron’s spin on
“Santa Baby,” renditions of “Blue Christmas” by Joe Novak
and the Backyard Rockers, and several jam session Christmas
numbers as well. The evening also saw performances from
Jampact and Ambush; plus participants including Don
Osborn, Eric Chuff, Bill Hocherl, Rich Piccerillo, Rich
Edmundson, Bill Nusom, Scott Imler, Rick Wagner, Mo
Yon, Larry Brest, Adam D and more.
Some Altoona area residents may have noted hearing live
Christmas music performed outside their homes during the
Saturday evening before Christmas. The source of that music
likely was the annual performance tour of Jack Frost and the
Frostbites, a gathering of area musicians reprising tradition for
the 34th year in a row as they traveled around the city in a
decorated pick-up truck and played yuletide favorites. I caught
up with the traveling troupe at the corner of Coleridge and
Milton Avenues in Altoona, and heard them play instrumental
renditions of “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You A Merry
Christmas.” The group’s participants this year included
drummer Rick Guyer, sax players Scott Lovell and Drew
Dancha, trombonists Drew Yingling and Bill Wolf, trumpeters
Larry Detwiler and Steve Saive, and Scott Durbin on bells
and percussion. Driving Jack Frost and the Frostbites from
neighborhood to neighborhood were Brian Somers and Dave
Westley. Via social media, Jack Frost and the Frostbites
answered several requests to take their traveling road show past
select homes and neighborhoods as their annual journey
progressed.
State College provided the sites for my transition from 2014
into 2015. For my first time ever, I attended downtown State
College’s annual First Night celebration on New Year’s Eve,
featuring a variety of family-friendly activities, ice sculpture
displays, arts and crafts, food and refreshments, and live music
staged at various downtown churches and public buildings. For
the music, I first headed to University Baptist & Brethren
Church to see Archie Blue. Originally together from 1979 to
1987, Archie Blue reunited and reformed in 2012, and has
since re-issued their Van Dyke Parks-produced 1982 album
New Day Comin.’ This night’s roster of singer, keyboardist and
founder Arthur Goldstein, keyboardist Barbara Neumuller,
guitarist Chris Younken, bassist Bob Hart and drummer
Kevin Lowe (filling in for John Raiser) performed a mixture
of original song material and select covers. Their original sound
mixed elements of progressive-geared rock, jazz and funk,
exhibited on numbers such as “Looking for the Sun” and
“(Zubadu) Badendao”; the group also did inventive takes on
Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale,” plus numbers from
the Talking Heads and others. I then headed to the State
College Presbyterian Church to hear some blues, courtesy of
Philadelphia’s Deb Callahan Band. A large audience
witnessed as Deb and her band mixed blues and R&B numbers,
including several from her latest CD Tell It Like It Is. Deb
quickly won the crowd with her dynamic, expressive and
soulful delivery as she sang tunes from the new CD such as
“Sun Is Rising,” “Old Ways” and “Gonna Get There,” along
with older numbers like “Credit Card Blues,” “If Your Man
Messes Up” and “Food on the Table.” Her band displayed
stellar musicianship, with Allen James showing some excellent
lead guitar work while bassist Garry Lee and drummer Tom

Walling executed sharp, grooving rhythms.
From First Night, I proceeded to The Arena in State College
to close out 2014 and enter 2015 with Hybrid Ice. Kicking off
with their early ‘80s original “On We Go,” Hybrid Ice filled
the dance floor within three songs; keyboardist Bob
Richardson, guitarists Chris Alburger and Shane Jones
(filling in for Rusty Foulke), bassist Jason Shaffer and
drummer Rick Klinger did what they do best, mixing ‘70s and
‘80s arena rock classics with select original songs. Chris
quickly showed he still has the voice and range on first set
renditions of Styx’s “Come Sail Away” and Journey’s
“Separate Ways,” and Bob emceed the rocking party as he led
the group on Def Leppard’s “Rock of Ages,” Bad Company’s
“Feel Like Makin’ Love” and Van Halen’s “Running with the
Devil.” Bob took up position behind the drum kit, freeing Rick
to step out front to sing and dance his way through AC’DC’s
“Sin City.” During the second set, songs from Led Zeppelin,
Trooper, Van Halen, Styx and John Cafferty led up to midnight
and the champagne toast into the New Year, before Hybrid Ice
wrapped up the set with their original “Scars on My Heart.”
The third set took the party down the homestretch, and
included Bob and Shane dueling licks with their respective
instruments on Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” Bob and
Rick engaging in a percussion jam during a late-set classic
rocking medley, and Chris leading the show to its close with
his recital of Hybrid Ice’s best-known song, “Magdelene.”
Hybrid Ice is already looking ahead to early 2016 and their
next Legends Of Rock Caribbean Cruise, as they perform
aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas cruise ship, and
back up performers such as John Cafferty, Al Jardine of the
Beach Boys, Bobby Kimball of Toto and more.
Two nights later, I returned to The Arena to take in the high-
octane dance party fueled by Gas Station Disco. A good-sized
crowd populated the dance floor as Gas Station Disco
performed rock, pop, hip-hop and dance hits. Singer Jason
Dumm, guitarist/singer Mike Danger, bassist/singer Jonathan
“Bug” Price and drummer/singer Rob Hampton fired off
favorites from Montell Jordan, Modern English, Lit, Green
Day, Sir Mix a Lot, Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Billy Idol,
Snoop Dogg, Blur and more; swapping singing/rapping duties
and providing constant movement, sound bytes and more to
keep things exciting and fresh. The group welcomed guest
singer Lisa Bock to belt out the voice on 4 Non Blondes’
“What’s Up” to close the night. Gas Station Disco took their
party south in late January with shows in Mississippi, Arkansas
and Louisiana; they return to The Arena February 6th.
Former Marauders frontman/guitarist Ben Dumm has been
rocking and rolling with his newest project, the East Side
Band, which I witnessed in late December at Ebensburg’s
Castle Pub. Flanking Ben in this latest endeavor are rhythm
guitarist Simon Lieb, bassist Darren Jones and drummer
Tony Maiocco. Consistent with his work in The Marauders
and his more recent project, the Deviants, Ben and the East
Side Band continue to merge roots rock with a punk-infused
wallop. They did a number of original songs, including new
ones plus tunes from the Deviants and even Marauders eras
such as “She Put a Curse on Me,” “Gasoline,” “Devil’s Debt”
and more. They also gave furious makeovers to select covers
from The Cramps, CCR, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry and more;
highlighted by their fiery surf-rocking slant on the Rolling
Stones’ “Paint It Black” and a feral version of “Long Tall
Sally.” Ben Dumm & the East Side Band have completed
work on a new CD, which should be available shortly.
McGarvey’s in Altoona hosted the double-bill of Post
Traumatik and Railroad City Murder Machines last month.
This was my first extended look at Homer City-based Post
Traumatik, who opened the night with a set that blended
punk-infused original songs and power ballads, plus select
covers. Singer Chelsea Stiles displayed a strong and versatile
voice that handled the group’s more aggressive, punk-driven
covers like the Runaways’ “Where the Boys Are” and the
Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop,” as well as power ballad-geared
originals like “Running Away” and “Rock and Roll Suicide,”
which recall ‘80s era Heart. Backing Chelsea were guitarists
Joe Pribesh and Sean Murphy, bassist Tony Malandro and
drummer Joe Lassick. Railroad City Murder Machines then
drilled their set of high-octane, punk-fueled original songs.
Singers/guitarists Cheeze and Tim Mort, bassist Dan Mort
and drummer Billy Mort put pedal to the metal on high-
velocity originals like “Old Ghost,” “Dirt Nap,” “Deadliest
Foe” and more, and also offered a slamming take on Phil
Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” Railroad City Murder
Machines plan to record and issue their debut CD later this
year.
R2B2 recently revamped their roster, and I caught the group’s
updated lineup last month at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub.
The group’s ‘R2’ half - guitarists Ric Criste and Rick Wertz -
and one of the original ‘B2’ half - drummer Beau Saller - are
now joined by new bassist Fritz Wyland and
keyboardist/singer Mary Villani. Mary’s addition enables
R2B2 to expand their repertoire to include hits from female
artists. The group’s new configuration laid down lots of
dancing grooves with their mixture of rock and dance hits from
the 1970s to now. All band members except Fritz shared in the
singing duties and kept the upper level dance floor busy
throughout the night with tunes from Pink, INXS, The Fixx,
Jennifer Lopez, Sly & the Family Stone, B-52’s, Cameo,
Commodores, No Doubt, Wild Cherry, Blondie and more.
Their set list this night included a few numbers I had not heard
in a while, such as Morris Day & the Time’s “Jungle Love”
and T. Rex’s “Get It On.” The new R2B2 is spreading their
party throughout the region; they return to Family Pizza March
28th.
Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band expect to issue
their third CD later this year. They previewed numbers from
the new disc during their December pre-Christmas visit to
Altoona’s Belmar Hotel. Namesake Chris on lead vocals, keys
and even acoustic guitar this night, along with bassist (and co-
namesake) Mike Stanley, lead guitarist C’Jay Castello and
drummer Randy Servello debuted a number of new tunes from
that forthcoming disc, revealing some interesting variations on
their funk-based sound along with some edgy, current event-
based lyrics. The group broke out their familiar jams and
grooves as well, and rode their freewheeling musicianship to
the stratosphere. All four musicians did amazing stuff on their
instruments, from C’Jay’s smoking precision leads to Chris’
chaotic bursts of intense organ fills to Mike’s wicked bass
grooves to Randy’s improvisational and complex rhythms. The
group kept building steam as the night progressed, leaving this
observer and other Belmar witnesses awestruck. Chris Vipond

and the Stanley Street Band will be one of many area
performers taking part in Bright Side Of The Road: The
Legacy of Van Morrison, a celebration of Van Morrison’s
music, at the State Theatre in State College on February 7th.
Another group participating in that upcoming Van Morrison
tribute will be Ted McCloskey and the Hi-Fi’s, who I caught
up with last month during one of their weekly Friday
appearances at State College’s Phyrst. This band never
disappoints; namesake, singer and guitarist Ted, bassist Rene
Witzke and drummer Daryl Branford mixed up original songs
with classic rock, blues and soul favorites; continually adding
inventive twists and riding many of the songs to peak intensity.
The trio did a number of songs from Ted’s latest Sea Foam
Green CD such as “Cameras and Microphones,” “Running on
a Loop in My Brain” and “A Wreck Around You,” plus tackled
chestnuts from Lou Reed, the Rolling Stones, Todd Rundgren,
the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Prince and more. Ted
and the Hi-Fis’ grooves clicked and their musicianship shined,
and their uptempo vibe kept folks dancing in front of the stage
throughout the night. Late in the show, guest Molly
Countermine jumped up to sing lead on a feisty read of Tracy
Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason.”
Some nights are just not ideal nights for live music. The first
weekend following New Year’s Eve is often slow for live
music, as many fans are still partied out from their New Year’s
Eve festivus. For the first Saturday of 2015 in the Altoona
vicinity, add in freezing rainfall through most of the day
leading up until evening, and then the regional NFL favorite
Pittsburgh Steelers bowing out of the playoffs with an early
evening wild card game loss to Baltimore; with these factors, it
was going to be a difficult night to draw and entertain a music-
loving crowd. But “the show must go on,” and Bodacious B
faced the situation and delivered the music at Hollidaysburg’s
Old Canal Inn. At least a few folks ventured into the venue’s
downstairs area to give the bodacious tandem of guitarist/singer
Matt Burns and drummer Steve Brulia an audience to
perform for. Matt and Steve did good work on their mixture of
rock, pop and country hits. Always a big strength with this duo
is their knack for firing off successions of songs in rapid fire
fashion; Bodacious B kept the music coming with nonstop
favorites from Blake Shelton, Rick Springfield, Jimmy Eat
World, Smashmouth, Black Keys, Weezer, Zac Brown Band,
Kid Rock, Loverboy, Bon Jovi and more. Their unique style
and vast catalog of tunes keeps Bodacious B busy; they return
to the Old Canal Inn in April.
I caught Randy “Jackson” Rutherford’s one-man show in
late December at Family Pizza & Pub. Breaking in a new
guitar, Randy showed off its nice tone as he dazzled on a
diverse range of tunes, and welcomed a few guests. He tapped
into material from Jeff Beck, Crosby Stills Nash & Young,
Steely Dan, the Beatles, the Eagles, Dr. John, Cream, Bill
Withers, Tears for Fears, Gary Moore and others. Along the
way, Randy welcomed local tambourine-tapping personality
Priscilla “the Tambourine Lady” Gati up during several
numbers. Guest Mark Montrella played harmonica on
Cream’s “Strange Brew” and sang on Emerson Lake &
Palmer’s “From the Beginning.” And thanks to Randy for
inviting me up to hit on my djembe during Santana’s “Oye
Como Va” and the night-ending Tower Of Power funk workout
“What Is Hip!” Randy Jackson will be one of several
performers donating their talents at Family Pizza on February
22nd during the Benefit for Brian Cupples (see “News and
Notes” later in this article).
And The Hope Fallacy’s Eric McCrum offered up acoustic
fun at McGarvey’s during one Friday night last month. Eric
displayed his expressive singing style as he fired off an
acoustic mixture of favorites from Tonic, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Mumford & Son, Ben Folds Five, Counting Crows
and more. As he performed, a crowd steadily grew in front of
the stage and sang along with many of the songs; including
several from his mothership band The Hope Fallacy such as
“Up All Night” and more, helping to turn this night into a
party.
Other performers I saw in recent weeks included the last two
songs by The Nightcrawlers during one of their weekly
Thursday night shows last month at Café 210 in State College,
and performances by Denny Labriola, Amy Yatta, Phil
Baskin, Ron Balestino, Nate Dibert of Spacefish, Mo Yon,
Chelsea and Stevie Moses, and Casey Smith during the
weekly Tuesday night Backyard Rockers-hosted Open Mic
Night at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg.
News and notes…A second benefit concert is coming
together to help out area musician Brian Cupples, as he
continues to battle health complications stemming from
mercury poisoning; The Benefit for Brian Cupples will take
place on Sunday, February 22nd from 2 to 8 p.m. at Family
Pizza in Altoona. Those attending can donate what they can
into a donation jar, and enjoy performances from Dreadnot,
Randy Jackson, Pat McGinnis, Stormy, the Backyard
Rockers and Triple Threat…Both singer Matt Watson and
guitarist Todd Dale are departing Naildriver to devote more
time to families; the group is currently seeking
replacements…Jampact welcomes aboard Jamie Shumac as
their new drummer, replacing Wade Flick…Monster Track
Supergroup has added a new guitarist, as Dustin Drevitch
takes over the second guitar position full-time, joining guitarist
Bret Alexander and replacing Tony Harlan… Bazooka Joe

SANE ADVICE By John Kerecz
Create the trends, don’t follow them! Throughout time,
artists have found new ways to express themselves and create
new approaches to set their work apart from those that have
come before them. Think about the different movements of art,
from Impressionism and Expressionism to Surrealism and
Minimalism. These styles couldn’t be more different from each
other and that’s the point. The art lives on because it was
unique.
If you want to simply follow the latest trends and create
music that works sounding just like many other songs out
there, it won’t set you apart from the rest; it won’t help your
work make a strong impression. To make something
memorable, you’ll need an element of creativity and novelty.
Just like other forms of art, there should not be limits to your
expression in music because more often than not your music
should be an extension of your inner soul. Successful songs
should be influenced and driven by your passion. There is lots
of room to develop your own style. Doing so will help you
stand out from the competition and allow you to create your
own uniqueness. So get out there and start a trend do not
follow one!

CHRIS BELL - “BELL COUNTY LINE” (Silverbridge
Records) A New England native now calling State College
his home base, Chris Bell has built a strong resume as an
electric bluesman in more than a decade of recording and
touring the country. On his latest CD, “Bell County Line”,
Bell expands his roots-based frontier to embrace Americana,
country and southern rock flavors. Through the disc’s dozen
tracks, Bell applies his
hearty singing style to
odes about country
living and upbringing,
bars, booze and blues;
while wielding electric
and acoustic guitars,
dobro, banjo and bass.
Several renowned
guests assist along the
way, including steel
guitar master Buzz
Evans, fiddler Johnny
Potash, Celine Dion
keyboard player Yves
Frulla and more. The album never stays in one place for long;
Bell displays a Lynyrd Skynyrd southern rock flavor on the
rowdy disc-opener “No Big Deal,” and dabbles with a milder
Allman Brothers tone later with “Pearly Gates.” Evans’ steel
guitar drives the tear-in-beer ballad “Too Much to Drink,” as
well as the traditional honky-tonk exercise “Daddy Plays Steel
Guitar.” Bell tackles hard-edged new country as well on the
dance floor anthem “(That’s How) Country Girls Do It,” the
backwoodsy “Down in the Holler,” the ambition-themed “Get
Back Home” and the bar-brawling “Take It Outside.” Swamp
blues informs the title track “Bell Countyline,” and Bell closes
the disc with the rural folk touch of “Carrie Mae.” Bell sinks
passion and intensity into his performances throughout the
disc, and his gritty growl is front and center; it’s clear from the
listening that he is having fun exploring these new musical
frontiers. The musicianship is strong throughout, and the guest
musicians and singers successfully fill, accent and bring out
the moods of each piece. The production is full and balanced,
allowing Bell and his players to carry the show with minimal
studio polish, bells or whistles. After the initial shock of Chris
Bell’s seismic stylistic expansion wears off, “Bell County
Line” is ultimately a fun listen, as listeners will hear an artist
having fun, with Americana music as his newly-discovered
playground. (The CD can be obtained at CD Baby or through
Bell’s R e v e r b n a t i o n
page,www.reverbnation.com/chrisbellband.)
NEW DAY DAWN - “RISE ABOVE THIS” EP (Botti Parts
Music) Northern New Jersey’s New Day Dawn introduced
their melody-laden, emotion-packed brand of hard modern
rock with their 2008 full-length CD, “The Company We
Keep”, and has since expanded their scope nationwide to open
for national acts and perform at prestigious events such as the
South By Southwest Music Festival (SXSW). On their latest
five-song EP, “Rise Above This”, New Day Dawn continues
to hone their melody-based sound, while enabling the group’s
focal point - singer, guitarist and songwriter Dawn Botti - to
reaffirm her drive to move forward following changes in her
career path. Botti still knows how to craft a catchy song hook
and anthemic chorus; and along with drummer/husband Gary
Szczecina and guitarist Patrick Angeloni, knows how to pack
power and authority behind her song creations. The disc
launches with the upbeat tone of the appreciative “You Are My
Everything,” and offers
comfort and hope after
the fall with the
escalating arrangement
of “Lay Your Head.”
The hard-driving “Life
Impossible” addresses
forward movement after
a difficult life decision,
while the darker-toned
“Whatever It Takes”
pledges devotion and
determination to the
path ahead. The stern
disc-closer “Runaway” touts confronting situations rather than
fleeing them. Botti again establishes her powerful presence
with her impassioned, soaring delivery, and the group’s
backing vocals drive the anthemic chorus hooks home. Several
notable guests assist along the way, including 3 Doors Down
drummer Greg Upchurch, .38 Special keyboardist Bobby
Capps, and Disturbed’s John Moyer on additional guitar and
keys. The musicianship is rock solid and tight, packing
authoritative thunder behind the melodies to seal the deal.
“Rise Above This” demonstrates New Day Dawn’s musical
focus moving forward, and offers the sound of a determined,
hard-working band. (The EP can be obtained through CD
Baby or through the group’s website, www.newdaydawn.info.)
LUCKY LAD GREEN - “LUCKY LAD GREEN” EP (no
label) Lucky Lad Green came together two years ago, as five
Johnstown area musicians merged punk, metal and hardcore
backgrounds into a new Celtic punk rock endeavor. The
group’s self-titled four-song EP introduces listeners to their
boisterous brand of Irish-infused punk rock. Bassist Jim
Berkin, and drummer Bret Berk power the group’s sound
with a variety of high-velocity rhythms, while guitarist Steve
Boyle a n d m u l t i -
instrumentalist Ryan
McDonald generate
hard-driving walls of
sound; all setting the
backdrop for singer
Eric Smay to howl and
bark out relatable, easy-
to-digest words of Irish
heritage, solidarity and
drinking. Lucky Lad
Green opens the
sampler with a hard-
hitting seafaring ode,
“Tale of a Sailor,” spinning a tale of temptation, a woman and
revenge. “Lead Sled” salutes a favorite form of transportation,
“Irish Pride” celebrates blue-collar, hard-working, hard-
drinking Irish tradition and solidarity, and the disc closes with
the alcohol-laden, brawling anthem “Bar Fight.” Lucky Lad
Green’s presentation is rowdy and no-holds-barred, as they
deliver their songs with groove and swagger. Smay belts out
his words with purpose and enthusiasm, and his bandmates
respond with raucous gang shots and count-offs. The mix is
basic and to the point, capturing the group’s jagged edge and
spontaneous approach, warts and all. This is a fun sampler that
quickly informs listeners on what Lucky Lad Green is about,
and should successfully entice new fans to experience the
group’s live show and hoist some grog. (The EP can be
obtained through Lucky Lad Green’s Reverbnation page,
www.reverbnation.com/luckyladgreen.)
