Two new Hero class Canadian Coast Guard patrol vessels have arrived in North Saanich and will soon be plying the waters of the B.C. coast.

The vessels — the CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M. and CCGS M. Charles M.B. — are stationed at the Institute of Ocean Sciences. They arrived Feb. 19, after sailing 7,095 nautical miles (approximately 13,000 kilo-metres) from the Irving Shipyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Dan Bate, communications officer for the Western Region, Canadian Coast Guard, says the vessels replace two decommissioned Post class ships. Those vessels ended their service with the Coast Guard at the end of the patrol season last year, he said.

The new ships are part of the federal government’s mid-shore patrol vessel procurement program that saw nine new vessels built for service on Canada’s coastlines. That project began in 2012, Bate said and the pair stationed in North Saanich were the last two built.

With crews of around 10 people each, the vessels’ pri-mary duty will be conservation and protection services in the Pacific Region Marine Patrol program. They will spend weeks at a time along the coast between Prince Rupert in the north to the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the south. Bate said they also extend their patrols 120 nauti-cal miles into the ocean. The secondary job of the ships will be marine search and rescue.

Both vessels are currently undergoing preparation for the patrol season, Bate said.

They say it takes a village to raise a child and there is no greater need for a village’s worth of love than when that child becomes ill.

Days after his sixth birthday and just before Christmas, Kai Hennessey’s days went from staging Pokeman battles and enjoying his kin-dergarten classes at Deep Cove Elementary to a flurry of chemotherapy treatments at the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), Kai will undergo six months to a year of treatment, with his parents Kevin and Setsu uprooted to the mainland for the duration.

“It’s definitely been a big detour from ‘nor-mal,’” said Kevin. “He needs one of us at all times to be with him.”

“It’s been challenging, but with all the unbe-lievable support … we’ve settled into a good routine, and are actually really enjoying all the time together.”

That support has come from family and friends, but also from Kevin’s employers, the community, the staff at the hospital, and even complete strangers, he said.

Shelly Andrews, a friend of the family whose son had started kindergarten with Kai last fall, said the diagnosis was a shock.

Sidney mayoral candidate Steve Duck spent the most in his bid for the top job on the munici-pal council — but not by much, and the overall spending record almost mirrors the tight race in last November’s civic election.

Duck, who placed fourth in a five-person race with 674 votes, spent $14,947.70, according to the campaign finance disclosure statements released by Elec-tions B.C. on Feb. 23.

Steve Price, who with 1,312 votes became Sidney’s new mayor, was second-highest in spending at $13,428.34. Former mayor Don Amos spent $11,095 on his campaign, coming third with only 706 votes.

Cliff McNeil-Smith spent $9,321.90 in a second place fin-ish with 1,180 votes.

In North Saanich, Mayor Alice Finall was returned to her chair with 2,416 votes, slightly edging out challenger Doro-thy Hartshorne, who garnered 2,258. Hartshorne led the way in campaign spending, however, at $12,402.05. Finall only spent around half of that: $7,023.70.

Mayoral candidate Peter Miller, who withdrew from the election but not early enough to have his name dropped from the

ballot in North Saanich, spent $555.71 and received 62 votes.

Central Saanich’s new mayor, Ryan Windsor, spent $9,264.68 on his campaign effort, easily outpacing former mayor Jack Mar in spending ($475.04) and votes (2,998 to 1,955).

David Shebib, who ran for mayor in all three Saanich Penin-sula municipalities — and across Greater Victoria — reported raising no donations and spend-ing nothing on his campaign.

Among elector organizations Team North Saanich — repre-senting the campaigns of Craig Mearns, Conny McBride, Ste-phen Pearce, Jack McClintock and Dunstan Browne — spent $44,415.95. Of that, $25,000 was

contributed by the candidates themselves — the most, $20,800, from Mearns. In return, Mearns received just over $19,900 for his campaign from the elector organization. In his disclosure statement, Mearns listed no con-tributors other than himself and Team North Saanich.

The only Team North Saan-ich candidate to be elected was McClintock.

The local elections disclo-sure statements list the donors to each mayoral and council-lor candidate’s campaign and the amounts they contributed. Spending, too, is itemized. The documents are available to the public and can be found at elec-tions.bc.ca/lecfa.

As the recent Hearts of the Community volunteer awards ceremony illus-trated, the Saanich Penin-sula has a plethora of pas-

sionate volunteers supporting the com-munity, including a strong base of youth volunteers. Everyone was recognized and thanked, but it was the exceptional dedication to his community shown by Michael Ram that won him the annual Outstanding Volunteer Youth Award, which included a $1,000 award.

The Grade 12 honour roll student at Parkland Secondary School kicked off his volunteer career back in Grade 8, with Panorama Recreation’s summer camps. From there, Ram progressed to volunteering his time as coach and referee for after school drop-in basket-ball games at the North Saanich Mid-dle School, participating in a myriad of charity events for the Victoria chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and running game booths at the Saan-ichton Fair to raise money for the Sid-ney Rotary Club.

One of Ram’s main focuses right now is promoting awareness about mental health and he recently returned from a mental health and wellness conference in Vancouver.

“After attending these conferences and listening to these public speakers, who went through different scenarios but were feeling the same symptoms, they inspired me.

“It’s really important that students and peo-ple my age understand that you’re not alone,” he says. “It’s a matter of opening that box and stopping that stigma.”

To that end, Ram and a fellow schoolmate are going to be presenting what they learned at the conference to the school leadership group.

“Everyone struggles with mental health, and the main thing is to get it

out there,” he says. “One of the first steps is just talking

to someone.” Ram has experienced the benefits of

volunteerism firsthand, in dedicated coaches and teachers who impacted

his developing years, and says he wants to give some of that dedi-cation back.

“Growing up, my parents always taught me that you can’t go through life without giv-ing back,” he says.

“It makes me so thank-ful that there are people in my life that have given

up their time to help me succeed, and I want to have that same impact on my community.”

Though often thought of as the realm of retirees, volunteering is a worthwhile

effort for youth as well, for themselves as well as their communities.

“It provides valuable community ser-vices,” he says. “And through meeting new people, I’ve expanded my knowl-edge and I’ve learned professional skills.”

“Volunteering has a bonus impact on the health and wellbeing of communi-ties, not only here, but worldwide,” he adds.

As he graduates this year, Ram, as co-grad class president, will be working hard to make sure that he and his fellow classmates have a memorable last year.

Come September, he’s set his sights on university and a business degree, but says his volunteer time will remain a top priority.

“Giving back is a family belief,” he says, and he plans to keep it up.

Isabelle Yoxall, recog-nized Feb. 19 as one of the Saanich Peninsula’s Hearts of the Commu-nity, says she doesn’t

seek out the spotlight.Like many people who

volunteer, she said she doesn’t do it for recogni-tion. Instead, Yoxall said she does the volunteer work because she likes to be active.

“If I’m not doing anything else, and if someone asks if I want to try something, I usually do it.”

That attitude has made her one of the Peninsula’s busiest volunteers. Since arriving on the Peninsula 30 years ago, she has spent her time with Beacon Com-munity Services in many roles — from a driver and thrift store worker, to taking phone calls and holding fort at the reception desk at the SHOAL Centre.

Yoxall doesn’t stop there. She stuffs envelopes for the Mt. Newton Centre, knits with the Norgarden Knit-ters, sings at Rest Haven Lodge every Friday and helps co-ordinate other vol-unteers for the annual com-munity Christmas dinner.

Yoxall said, being an active and outgoing per-son in general, volunteering allows her to get to know a lot of other people.

‘When I walk in down-

town Sidney, I always run into someone I know.”

That, she added, is thanks enough.

Asked what keeps her vol-unteering she said, “what else would I do?”

“I’d probably just stay at home and watch TV.”

But she said she doesn’t like that idea and would rather get out and meet people.

“I recommend volunteer-ing for many people. Some have nothing to do and I think they’ll get tired of that.

“It’s nice to be able to help someone.”

Being recognized for her many years of giving back

to the community was a little unnerving, she admitted.

Yoxall said being in the spotlight is not her cup of tea and said she was over-whelmed at winning the Hearts of the Community award.

Yet, she hopes the appre-ciation for volunteers is spread around a little.

“Some deserve it more,” she said. “I don’t do it to be recognized or anything.”

Yoxall does admit to being pleased at earning her 15-year volunteer pin with Beacon Community Services.

Yoxall thanked her friend Helen Evans for nominat-ing her this year, adding it may soon be Evans’ turn to become a Heart of the Com-munity on the Saanich Pen-insula.

Aravindor Gunasinghe, or Constable Ravi as he is known throughout the community, believes that volunteering brings people together.

Gunasinghe was honoured Feb. 19 with the Hearts of the Community award, presented by Beacon

Community Services and the Peninsula News Review.He’s a busy guy and the PNR could not track him down for

a sit down interview (being an RCMP officer, that evasion skill might come in handy) but his nominator had great things to say about a man who has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

“Ravi is a people person,” stated Scott Stinson. “He enjoys meeting people and building relationships. Through his volun-teer commitments, he has been able to make and retain many positive relationships.”

Gunasinghe, while at one time posted as the RCMP’s liaison to local schools, has continued on and added other areas of interest to his volunteering resumé. From 2002, he has been involved with the Peninsula Track Club, sharing his love of running with local youth.

As a Secret Santa, Gunasinghe worked to bring cheer to several families in need. That effort, said Stinson, has seen his work with families grow over the holidays.

“His work led him to volunteer large amounts of time, often to the detriment of his own family time, in support of children and youth at risk,” Stinson stated.

I keep looking at the photo of the proposed space needed for the new fire hall and I can’t believe my eyes.

What is left for the kids? This is a piece of green space that once taken away will be gone for-ever. Where are the kids to play and run?

While I agree 100 per cent with the need for a more updated fire hall including a training tower, I am 100 per cent against the location moving to the Sidney School site.

I see no reason the fire hall can not stay where it is with a new addi-tion to the south side using the parking lot (which the Town already owns). In North Saanich the original fire hall remains with the new ‘seis-mic’ portion directly beside con-nected with a breezeway.

The same concept can be used for Sidney’s fire hall.

Action, not wordsAs I foreshadowed in my four

seminars last year, within the next two years downtown Sidney will be facing 25 per cent of Sidney’s cur-rent downtown commercial space being replicated and/or relocated to west of the Pat Bay Highway (i.e. Sidney Gateway and/or Sandown Commons).

We may also face additional com-petition from Jesken Town Centre. All, we should note, supported by the previous council and the cham-ber of commerce.

Given this looming threat, for the past year SOS (Support our Sidney)

has been trying to motivate council, Sidney residents and businesses to fix downtown and competitor-proof it by implementing the SOS top ten priority action items.

Sadly only one (creating the SBIA) has been actioned — but no action whatsoever has been taken on the other nine (i.e. fixing our convo-luted traffic, improving our highway and ferry gateways, opening a new highway visitor centre, imposing architectural guidelines, introduc-ing façade grants, animating Beacon Avenue and Beacon Pier, co-ordinat-ing store opening hours and creat-

ing a new slogan to complement Sidney by the Sea.

Although I note the proposed Town budget is increasing its eco-nomic development budget to $100,000, I see no commitment to any of the above priorities.

Lots of talk but no action. As I quoted Andrew Carnegie in my seminars last year: “As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.”

Just pick up the poopHey, it’s that time again to remind

all dog owners and walkers to pick up after their dog(s).

I’m still finding poop in the Saa-nichton Village area, on sidewalks and lawns — all this with poop bags strategically placed in the most obvious places because some own-ers just could not toss it in one of the many bins around the village or take it home with them.

It just amazes me how lazy some people are and it makes the village look uncared for.

Dog poop just does not biode-grade quickly and provides no fertil-izing properties.

Just pick up the poop. How hard is that?

What is left for the school kids?

It’s coming ... wait for itO

ne of the most common laments overheard as the Town of Sidney proceeds with its plans for a community safety building — or new fire hall, since that’s the largest

component of the project — is the lack of public consultation.

From neighbours of the proposed site next to Sidney Elementary School and advocates on behalf of education, to school district parent group representatives, the fact that there hasn’t been any public participation has been noted.

That’s unfair at this stage.The Town and School District 63 (Saanich)

are considering their options when it comes to this proposal. There are also plans for the building in circulation and a feasibility study done on behalf of the municipality.

But let’s be clear, the time for public input on the building’s design or cost has not yet arrived.

While the concept of the building is available for all to see, and it is being discussed by community leaders, those debates hinge on whether it’s going to be worth it to proceed.

At this stage, school board trustees have the power to eliminate the site under consideration — or give it the green light.

And while there are plenty of people commenting on whether this is the best site, it’s a decision the Town of Sidney is waiting for before it spends more time and money on moving to the next stage: their full public consultation process.

It would potentially be a big waste of time to seek public feedback now. If the school board nixes the plan, the public process would have to be repeated for another property under consideration.

We know there are a lot of people chomping at the bit to have their say as to the merits, or lack of them, on this proposal. To demand it now, or complain about not having had a say yet is premature.

Be patient. Your time will come. There are too many interests and issues at stake for people to be left out of this conversation.

“The Wednesday night, we were celebrat-ing his birthday at my house and we had no idea that in two days he’d be airlifted to the hospital,” she said. “(It) shook our family, the school and anybody that has ever come into contact with this sweet, loving and kind little boy.”

Andrews was moved to pull the community together to support the Hennesseys.

“I think this is the time that friends and family have to rally and hold them up while they’re busy trying to help their son,” she said.

A group of moms got together and started talking to the principal at Deep Cove Elemen-tary. Soon, the “We Love Kai” day was born.

The entire school, students, teachers and parents, came together Feb. 12 to raise money through a bake sale and pledges toward a head shaving event.

Four teachers, two men and two women, and 23 students went under the razor to shave their heads. Sab-hai Thai also donated lunch to the school for teachers to purchase and donated the pro-ceeds from a benefit luncheon they held the next day.

“Kai and Setsu were able to attend virtu-ally via Skype, which was amazing!” said Kevin, who was able to sneak over to the event and get his own head shaved. “When Kai showed up, projected on the gym wall, every-one went wild. There

were more smiles and hugs than I could keep track of, and Kai was so so so happy to see all his friends.”

“When his smiling face showed up on that screen, the entire gym, full of students, teachers and parents, broke out in cheers,” added Andrews. “It was an emotional day, but a very happy day as well.”

The ‘village’ came through with flying colours and raised more than $10,000 for the Hennesseys.

Andrews and her husband, owners of Nu-View Homes, also sent

out an email campaign to their past and pres-ent clients and sup-pliers and raised over $2,000 from local busi-nesses, dentists, law-yers and residents.

Andrews is currently working on organizing a bottle drive and silent auction to continue the support for the Hennes-seys.

“If we can relieve the financial burden to them, then they can focus on helping Kai get healthy and they can be present during

his recovery journey,” she said.

For his part, Kai is doing well, said Kevin.

“He has such an amazingly positive soul. He was more con-cerned about how hard the nurses were work-ing than he was about all the tubes hanging off of him,” he said.

Kai gets five days of chemo with seven dif-ferent drugs, and then 16 days off in between rounds to recover.

“He handles the drugs very well, and he humbles me with his 900 per cent posi-tive attitude daily,” said Kevin.

“We decided from the start to tell him he has a Pokeman battle going on in his body … and Setsu drew a good Pokeman character for each chemo drug he has, each with its own special powers, and the bad Pokeman are the cancer cells.”

Kai actually gets excited for his next “battle,” said Kevin.

The Hennessey fam-ily has been “com-pletely blown away” by the awe-inspiring outpouring of support from the Sidney com-munity and specifically Deep Cove Elementary School, he continued.

“Every single one of them are my heroes. Sidney really showed us what community means. I don’t even know how to describe how appreciative we are,” he said.

crash of the helicopter assisting in the rescue efforts.

The CCG Captain Goddard M.S.M. is named for Captain Nichola Goddard. She was awarded the Meri-tous Service Medal for her exemplary service in Afghanistan from January 2006, until her death in combat on May 17, 2006.

Two recommendations from their committees appear to put the board of trustees for School District 63 (Saanich) back to square one on the subject of a proposed community safety building next to Sidney Elemen-tary School.

On Tuesday, the Finance, Facilities and Technology com-mittee recommended that the board consider whether, and under what circumstances, school land should be sold.

That alone might indicate a willingness to explore the Town of Sidney’s proposal further.

However, the board’s Educa-tion Directions committee rec-ommended that further study into the feasibility of the project be rejected.

That indicates a desire to end the speculation and reject the plan for the school property.

For his part, Sidney Mayor Steve Price says he’ll wait and see what the full board of trust-ees decide at their March 4 meeting.

“The first recommendation didn’t discount it,” Price said. “They have a need for funds to do upgrades to the school.”

The second, he continued, was more definitive but had enough debate to leave the final decision of the board in the air.

Sidney is proposing to use three acres of the nine-acre property at Sidney Elementary School for a community safety building, housing a new fire hall, ambulance station and other services. The site is the Town’s preferred location, based on call volume and volunteer firefighter access, to name a few.

The project overview and fea-sibility study can be seen on the Town’s website (sidney.ca) as well as the school district’s site (sd63.bc.ca).

Trustee Barb Menzies, chair of the Education directions com-mittee, says the board, before the last civic election, autho-rized their staff to look into the possibility of selling the land. That was, she said, contingent upon seven stipulations rang-ing from the Town footing the bill for a feasibility study to the Town holding a public consulta-tive process.

Menzies said she was not sat-isfied that all of those points were met. She added there are two main points to consider: whether there’s enough informa-tion on the project and whether

such a building would have an impact on education at the school.

Trustee Jason Price said he would have a difficult time, from an educational standpoint, sup-porting the plan.

“The committee needs to thank the Town for its work so far,” he said, “but there’s no com-pelling reason for us to move forward.”

James Taylor, the district’s Parent Advisory Council co-ordinator, added he’s hearing that people feel left out of the process. Trustees Tim Dunford and Elsie McMurphy both stated there are a lot of complex issues surrounding this proposal, requiring further debate.

Menzies accepted trustee Price’s recommendation to not proceed.

Both committee recommen-dations now go to the full board of trustees for debate.

Mayor Price has said the Town is looking for a clear direction — to allow further work or to stop the discussion of using land at Sidney Elementary. That would, he said, enable the municipal-ity to proceed with planning and public participation — or reset the plan and have the Town seek out a different site.

Discovering Iceland and Land Rover’s new sportReykjavik, Iceland.It’s as though we are driving over breakfast cereal.The “crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch” sound of the crisp snow below the all-new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport’s cabin is both appetizing and unnerving.The studded tires bite into the slip-pery surface, which calms the nerves but visibility is slim to none – save that illuminated by our headlights – and traction changes after every rotation of the rubbers. Yet, I have confidence in myself, the tires and a vehicle whose DNA stems from a lineage of predecessors born in environments devoid of traction.Though it’s 9:08 a.m., the sun has yet to show itself and a blanket of pitch black envelops the country. To add to the ambiance, Iceland is a place where mythical beings are embedded in its folklore! As we traverse the topography, it’s almost as though one of the Norse gods, or trolls, is looking over us from above and shaking a sifter of powdered sugar. This dusting of snow is a fanciful act of beauty in the dark setting.I can’t see much around me. At all. But I know that one side of the trail we’re navigating is a steep drop off. While I’d love to drift the compact luxury SUV through some fantastic curves on these abandoned roads, now is not the time to try to be a hero. I’ll wait for another opportunity and the absence of a cliff.In 100 metres, we will be turning left onto a street whose name I couldn’t pronounce correctly even if the prize was a large sum of money. Streets in this part of Iceland are not marked per se. We best follow the GPS-based instruction if we want to stay on track.Iceland’s sliver of sunlight per day during the winter

averages about six hours. We’re just about an hour and a half before sunrise.At that time, I’ll better be able to see these capable SUVs and their performance abil-ities. Right now, I’m feeling its four-wheel drive (4WD) system at work. The standard Terrain Response system is set to snow/ice/gravel, and the seat warmers are on full blast.I’m also feeling the comfort and hospitality of its gracefully executed cabin and am enjoying the calm of the interior environ-ment. It might be frigid and rough outside, but not from where I’m sitting.The Discovery Sport will be available with one engine in Canada, and a great one at that. It’s a 2.0L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. It’s then matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission whose shifts are as smooth as some of the ice we’re driving upon. It doesn’t feel underpow-

ered yet is relatively humble in power numbers. Regardless, for what most people will do with this, it’s plenty.There’s also room for up to seven passengers (there’s a 5+2 configuration with stadium seating available) and a wading depth of 600mm (24-inches), which we tested out as we crossed a river. Yes, a river. Just don’t open your doors for any reason in the process.Other premium features include six USB out-lets, 829L of cargo space behind the second row seats and an infotainment system that is fairly intuitive to use.Throughout the day, our travels took us over almost every imaginable surface in Iceland: snow, ice, gravel, rocks, rivers, pavement, water and more.When we ended our adventure in Reykjavik, the “tap,

tap, tap, tap” of the studded tires resembled that of a mouse tap-dancing. The pitter-patter over the cobblestone streets meant our day was done, but not without being filled with everlasting memories. Iceland, a country that is hauntingly barren yet its winter beauty suggests a feeling of warmth (along with its geothermal baths and activity.)And the companionship of the Land Rover Discovery Sport only added to the magic of the world’s northern-most capital city. The Land Rover Discovery Sport is set to arrive this spring and has a starting MSRP of $41,490.

Not that long ago, if an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle was on a buyer’s shop-ping list, the options were largely limited to SUVs and trucks. Today the automotive landscape has exploded with manufacturers offering many more AWD vehicles. In fact, 48 percent of all vehicles purchased in Canada come with AWD or four-wheel drive (4X4). For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Can-ada (Formerly Chrysler Canada) the percentage is even higher, at roughly 58 percent. Thanks, in part, to the success of the Jeep brand and the many vehicles sold under that off-road-ready marque. The latest entry, the Jeep Renegade, will be arriving at dealerships around April but just last week I had a chance to drive this small Jeep in classic Cana-dian winter conditions just outside of Montreal.

LooksThe setting for the winter driving pro-gram was at ICAR, an enthusiast’s racing facility built on the abandoned aprons and taxiways of the old Mirabel airport, including a slalom course, road coarse and off-road adventure. The bold orange Renegade instantly jumped out against the howling wind and at-times, whiteout conditions. The Renegade is built in Eu-rope on the same platform that Fiat uses to make the all-new Fiat 500X. This cost sharing, multi-vehicle offensive is what

has helped Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be so successful over the past few years. The engineering and design was done in Michigan to insure the Renegade has all the classic Jeep char-acteristics, from the round headlamps and classic Jeep grille, to the trapezoi-dal wheel arches, appropriate ground clearance and overall bold styling. The Renegade is smaller than the Compass and Patriot models in the lineup, helping to promote the red-hot, small crossover segment even further. InsideWith a high seating position and boxy roofline, the Renegade has a lot of headroom and large windows, making

this compact crossover feel open and airy. The dash and surrounding trim is filled with eye-catching touches, like the speaker grilles and air vents that come painted for more panache. The front seats are supportive and provide a nice look down the long hood, making this feel more “trucky” The back seats offer plenty of room in this class and the cargo area is what Jeep calls class leading. Prices start at $19,995 for base Sport model with front wheel drive (FWD) and the first AWD model starts at $25,995. The volume leader will be the North trim with alloy wheels, starting at $27,494 for an AWD version. The problem will be the higher end trims,

like the $31,995 Limited, that look pricy compared to a bigger to a compact SUV, like a Honda CR-V, with a much more powerful engine, vastly bigger interior and a $30,000 AWD starting price.

DriveFCA didn’t just have the Renegade to drive in frozen weather, rather a selec-tion of the seventeen vehicles they offer with AWD or 4X4 capability. They were clear to point out that nine of the twen-ty-six models have AWD available even on the base trim. The Renegade’s base AWD system is a lighter weight active powertrain that can disconnect the rear wheels to save fuel but reconnect them in a fraction of a second if the tempera-ture drops of the windshield wipers are turned on. On dry pavement, the system only needs to detect the slightest wheel slippage to engage the AWD capability. In addition there is a terrain select knob in each model that lets the driver choose between auto, snow, sand, mud and

rocks to alert the Renegades’ traction control, stability control and engine/transmission electronics to keep the Jeep moving in different situations. The ultimate is the AWD system with a low setting for crawling over rocks, some-thing Jeep purists appreciate.

VerdictThe Jeep Renegade follows on the heels of some other stylish compact crossover vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke that provide a bit more flair, rather than just practicality. There is a whopping $2,990 premium to get the larger engine and automatic on the Sport trim and just $1,495 on the North, excluding the price premium to get AWD. At the end of the day this Jeep has a very attractive exterior and interior and is something fresh in one of the hottest segments in the market. The price can jump very, very quickly if the buyer wants AWD and automatic. Time will tell if buyers will spend the extra to buy the higher end models.

You’ll probably see, hear and read much about an all-new Volvo called the XC90 in the coming months. The XC90 will be the first com-pletely new, all-Volvo vehicle in a very long time and that’s mainly because of what’s been happening, behind the Volvo logo, in recent years.The XC90 is the first vehicle built on a new and adaptable “SPA” chassis structure designed for large and midsize vehicles. “The XC90 is the first of eight new models within the next three years that will be built on this new adaptable platform,” said Marc Engelen, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of Canada Corp. Volvo is also currently working to a new “CMA” small car platform. It will underpin and spawn a new generation of smaller vehicles and, according to Engelen, some of these will also be coming to Canada. Good news for Volvo fans who lament the discontinued importation of its smaller 30 and 40 series vehicles. The first production Volvo car was made in Sweden way back in 1927. Designed to survive the country’s rough roads and cold temperatures, it was nicknamed “Jakob”. Structurally strong vehicles with highest level of passenger safety have become fundamental Volvo qualities and the brand has a “Designed around you” build philosophy.Marc Engelen has been with Volvo for 22 years and served the company in Sweden, Germany and Belgium before accepting the Canadian leadership appointment in 2012. He was part of the Volvo negotiation

group that led to the Zhejiang Geely Holding of China takeover of Volvo Cars, in 2010. The trucking, heavy duty and marine sides of the business are now under separate ownership, called AB Volvo. Don’t drive your truck in a watery graveSpring-like weather means the back woods trails are already beckoning us out here in the west.While my Driveway colleagues seem to have spent the last month plowing through snow and ice back east, I’m raring to get out there in our beautiful back yard.However, there are a few things to think about before you head out into the back roads of British Columbia this spring, to find yourself driving through those swollen creeks and rivers. Think about that water entering areas of your truck, believe me, you would prefer it did not do so! – Your truck’s transmission, transfer case, and front and rear differentials must be vented to compen-sate for changes in air pressure as temperatures go up and down when you drive, but when you are driving off road in wet conditions the most likely

place for water to enter is through those vents. Water that gets in contaminates the lubricants that protect parts, and that can lead to bearing and gear damage. To keep water from getting into areas where it should not be is fairly easy. Attach a rubber hose, or vacuum hose to each vent, and then extend it to a high location on the truck. The length of tubing required will depend on your vehicle, but 30 – 35 centimetres should be enough.Before you begin, locate the vent on each compo-nent. Determine if each vent is a tube or a cap style. If it is a tube style make sure that the hose fits tight and secure it with a small hose clamp, leaving ex-cess hose length to route upwards. Cap type vents are usually screwed in mushroom shaped. Remove the cap from each one by unscrewing it. Use this for a sample and buy a nipple vent with the same

thread size and replace the cap with the nipple.The new vacuum hose for the transmission and transfer case vents can be secured along the frame or body to the firewall with plastic tie straps (do not over tighten and pinch the hose) and from there up into the engine compartment. Make sure to secure the end. Leave about 8 centimetres and bend it downward. The front differential hose is to be routed in a similar fashion but allow enough slack for axle movement. The same goes for the rear differential but instead of running it to the front, direct it up between the bed and the cab of the truck. When you have finished, check the tubing to make sure it is free of kinks and positioned away from hot exhaust or engine parts.Now you are ready to go through creeks and mud

holes with very little chance of water to enter the vents. Water can still enter components through other routes, so be sure to check the color of your differential and transmission fluid after each trip. Axle grease turns a light brown color when mixed with water. Automatic transmission fluid turns pink when mixed with water.

What happens when the evil stepsisters from Cinderella fall through a magic mir-ror and end up in high school? They join

up with the mean girl crowd and rule the school, of course.

At least, until the woodsman follows them through, and teaches the stepsisters you don’t have to be mean to succeed, as the folks from fai-rytale land realize they don’t need a woodsman to save them.

Fairytale land and reality come face to face in the Best of Both Worlds, a funny and heartwarming musical put on by the brand new Let’s Put On A Show fine arts and applied skills class at Bayside Middle School.

“We wanted to try something new,” says Heidi Benetti, drama and dance teacher at the school for the past 18 years. “It’s for the students to have the experience of being on stage and having fun with it.”

The musical features 46 students, and everyone has a role in the show, says Benetti, adding the students have been working hard to get the show ready.

“They’ve been building the set, helping cut the wood and paint it, and decorating the backdrops,” said Benetti. “And they helped decide the show that we were going to do.”

“It’s a challenge, but it’s really fun, and the kids are really excited.”

Gabby Houle, 14, can attest to the hard work that goes into mounting a production of this size. “We’ve been practising our lines a lot, almost everyday.”

“It’s really great to be a part of the first perfor-mance at Bayside,” said Zoe Johnston, 14. “I can’t wait to present it!”

“It’s fun and a great experience in acting. It’s really fun getting into character,” said fellow Grade 8 student Natalie Veronneau.

The program isn’t limited to musicals, adds Ben-etti. If this round is successful, next year’s class could choose something completely different.

Best of Both Worlds runs Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Bayside Middle School, 1101 Newton Place in Brentwood Bay.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children, and will be available at the door, or in advance at the school office during the week of the show.

When Lorayne and Ian Aitken saw a recent story in the Peninsula News Review’s Homefinder section, they felt they had to share their expe-riences — and try to encour-age home buyers to take extra time in making such a big decision.

Ian was born and raised in Central Saanich. He and Lorayne lived on Veyaness Road together for about two years. He had been there for seven or eight years, he added. When it came time to think about retirement, the couple looked to different markets to try to maximize their return on the home in which they were currently living.

Ian had finished a career at the Brentwood government liquor store and Lorayne, too, was anticipating retire-ment — at least a little ear-lier than the traditional age 65 or 67. So, they picked up stakes and found a home in Ladysmith.

While the move left them mortgage-free, they soon found out there were les-sons to be learned that even the basic due diligence had missed.

Near their new home, the Cassidy airport was under-going renovation. The extent of that work had the couple worried their home might be under new flight paths. Already, they would see sightseeing aircraft nearby but had grown used to that.

Fearing the worst, they again sold their home and found a new place in Cedar, a rural community south of Nanaimo. This is when their

challenges started.The house they bought,

despite a thorough inspec-tion, turned out to be infested with carpenter ants.

It’s one of the limitations

of a home inspection, said Ian, that the inspector can-not remove walls. Nor was the infestation listed in the seller’s disclosure statement.

The Aitkens said they

discovered there was little recourse but to seek legal redress when the previous owner refused to help. Ian said it was a lot of work for only a few hundred dollars

in repairs.From that, Lorayne said

they learned what to look for — such as small piles of saw-dust in the case of carpenter ants.

After a while, the couple decided they wanted a life-style change and looked at buying a townhouse. This brought them back to Cen-tral Saanich and a unit in Saa-nichton. They thought they would adapt to life under the rules of a strata, but for Ian, the limitations become too much.

“I still wanted to be able to mow my own lawn and to drop the tailgate of my truck and enjoy a beer in my yard.”

He and Lorayne advise that before anyone moves into a strata for the first time, try to rent first and try out the neighbourhood to see if it’s right for you.

It wasn’t a good fit for them, so with their long-time real estate agent in tow, they found a home in Central Saa-nich that they love.

The Aitkens say that find-ing the right real estate agent is vital. Someone who knows what they like and will spend the time to do a good job, they say, is key to having confidence in a home-buying decision.

The couple admit they have done well in real estate over the years, but with their latest move, Lorayne has had to put off retirement for a few more years.

Despite their challenges along the way, they’re happy with the decisions they’ve made and hope their expe-rience offers a little bit of friendly advice for other peo-ple looking to downsize — or even up-size to a new home.

As Brentwood Elementary’s BKind assem-bly came to an end late Thursday morn-ing, principal Shelly Hardcastle asked the gathered students to close their eyes and imagine what they could do to spread a little kindness among their classmates.

Dozens of heads lowered and eyes squeezed shut in a show of unity, the sea of matching T-shirts a visual example of the school-wide commitment to kindness.

Thanks to the Parents’ Advisory Commit-tee, every student in the school received a BKind t-shirt that morning, to bring them

together and help remind them of the impor-tance of treating each other with respect.

BKind day grew from the school’s Be A Good Friend day, and coincided with Pink Shirt Day, a national stand against bullying started by two Nova Scotia students in 2007 that eventually sparked the United Nations to adopt an international anti-bullying day.

Brentwood’s take on the event is a little different, but no less powerful.

Rather than focusing on how to stamp out bullying, the school put the emphasis on how to encourage positive behaviour.

PAC provides T-shirts for 300-plus students“It’s about putting a positive

spin on it,” said Hardcastle.“Bullying can be a really mis-

used word in many social learn-ing contexts,” she added. “A five-year-old having a conflict over a toy might say they’re being bul-lied, but that’s just learning how to get along.”

Instead of the ‘anti’ attitude, Hardcastle and the other teach-ers talk about fostering a kind approach.

“A lot of it is about being kind. Taking care of ourselves and tak-ing care of each other and our community,” she said. “It’s about helping, rather than hurting, and kids get that.”

Hardcastle was inspired to develop BKind day after talking to a friend and fellow principal in Surrey, and soon had a batch of the black and pink T-shirts made up for the teachers to purchase, but the movement quickly went much further.

“PAC saw them, and they said ‘we think all the kids should have them,’” said Hardcastle.

“What better idea to not only support Be A Good Friend day, but to also send each child home with something,” said Lindsay Tusche, a member of the Par-ents’ Advisory Committee.

“The kids will wear them again,” she added, and noted that it’s a great way to help remind them of the importance of being kind in their day to day

lives. Tusche, who has a daughter

in Grade 5 and a son in Grade 2 at the school, said the kids were excited for the project from the beginning.

“We were going around, try-ing on different sizes with the kids, and they were asking what colours the shirts were going to be,” she said. “The kids were just buzzing when we told them what was going on.”

An appropriate choice of words, as the shirts feature a bright pink bee.

Anson D’Anjou, a Grade 5 stu-

dent who spoke at the assembly about his own experiences with practicing kindness, said the school has done a good job with the BKind day.

“They really try and make other people understand kind-ness,” he said. “It’s good for the other kids to learn about kind-ness.”

D’Anjou has his own goal when it comes to spreading kindness and goodwill.

“Every day I try and make peo-ple laugh,” he said.
