A UNIQUE OFFERI am delighted to be able to offer members the rare opportunity to purchase several vintages of some of the top wines of Australia’s most famous fine-wine producer, Penfolds, including the truly iconic Grange.

Many of the world’s top wines are only available in such tiny quantities that it makes purchasing them to offer to members in the usual way almost impossible. When faced with the dilemma of what to do with our allocations of Grange and Penfolds other top wines, my predecessor, Pierre Mansour, decided to tuck away the best bottles from each vintage for future release to members in the fairest way possible. These wines have been maturing slowly in our temperature-controlled cellars here in Stevenage, waiting for the right time to make them available to members.

Unquestionably Australia’s most iconic producer, whose 170 year-history has helped shape the nation’s fine wine scene, Penfolds is unusual in that its most famous wines are not regionally specific. The emphasis instead is on crafting and constantly improving a range of wines created in time-honoured styles. Having the chance to taste wines from the portfolio alongside each other gives a true picture of the pedigree and rationale behind each of these carefully thought-out Bins.

In true co-operative spirit, in order to give as many members as possible the opportunity to try these highly sought-after wines, some of the wines are only available as part of a mixed case. Many, though, can be bought by the bottle for members to make up their own cases. Wines are listed by Bin, starting with the most affordable and working up to our selection of vintages of the world-famous Grange. More details are available online at thewinesociety.com/penfolds

THE RED WINES

THE TASTINGSuch is the scarcity of these wines that opportunities to taste several vintages alongside each other are equally rare. So we were honoured to be joined by Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago, along with wine critics Jancis Robinson MW and Anthony Rose, to help assess the maturity of each vintage and prepare the notes for this offer. Benefiting from the collective wisdom and expertise around the table, we share this in the notes below and in more detail on our website, where members can also read Jancis’ and Anthony’s wine notes in full.

KALIMNA BIN 28 SHIRAZNamed after the Barossa Valley’s Kalimna vineyard, the original source, today this is a multi-regional blend that epitomises warm-climate Australian shiraz, with Barossa fruit still a main constituent. Matured in large old (neutral) American oak hogsheads for 12-15 months, it is generous in its youth but with potential for long cellaring. Peter Gago suggests 15–20 years as a benchmark, but admits that the wines are tempting after just two or three.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2010Intense ripe blackberry and plum on the nose; full-bodied with fine tannins and a touch of cassis on the palate. This is ripe but restrained, with plenty of freshness to balance the ‘muscle’. Delicious now but with plenty of time in hand. Now to 2025. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15221.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 20112011 was cooler and the wines lighter and faster-maturing as a consequence – ‘A drinkers’ vintage,’ says Peter Gago. Elegant, spice-laden perfume with more red-berry fruit than the 2010. Medium body, with fine tannins and red cherry character on the palate and finish. Now to 2020. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15221.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2012Super concentrated with black fruit on the nose. Anthony Rose commented on the heightened pepper and plum aromatics. Full-bodied, grippy tannins and stewed plums on the palate with a hint of mint on the long finish. Now to 2027. 14.5% ref PF-AU17571 £20 bottle £240 dozen

BIN 150 MARANANGA SHIRAZA sub region of central Barossa, Marananga produces grapes of such high quality that they often make it into the Grange blend. Grapes are basket pressed and fermented in tank with maturation in both French and American oak puncheons and hogsheads (50% of the oak is new) for 16-18 months.

‘We created Bin 150 in 2008 as part of our quest for sub regionality at a reasonable price point; the use of larger-format barrels and mix of oak provide a point of difference and there’s always a certain sheen to the fruit which often has a distinctive juniper and blueberry character.’ Peter Gago

Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Barossa Shiraz 2010 Expressive rich blackberry and chocolate aromas. Full body with firm tannins and good depth of concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry flavour and toasty oak that will soften over time. 2018 to 2033. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15216.

Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Barossa Shiraz 2011In this cooler vintage, Marananga performed well, helped by a little wine originally destined for Grange trickling down into the final blend. Multi-layered black cherry, blueberry and black pepper aroma and flavour, with sweet vanilla on the finish and an appealing freshness. Now to 2022. 14.5% ref PF-AU16891 £38.50 bottle £462 dozen

‘The 2011s have a lovely peppery freshness that works for a European palate.’ Anthony Rose

Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Barossa Shiraz 2012Intense inky purple colour with opulent Black-Forest-gateau aroma, firm tannins, bright acidity and a meaty savoury edge to the dark fruit character; very long finish suggests a long life. 2018 to 2028 14.5%ref PF-AU17581 £38.50 bottle £462 dozen

‘I think this is going to be a really lovely bottle. Very complete…’ Jancis Robinson MW

BIN 407 CABERNET SAUVIGNONBin 407 is a multi-district cabernet that cherry-picks the best of the vintage from South and Western Australia. This more or less ‘vintage proofs’ the wine, leading to great stylistic consistency. Aged for 12 months in new French and a little older American oak hogsheads adding a restrained complexity.

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010Classy cabernet nose with hints of leather and tobacco. Dense cassis fruit fleshed out by broad, supple tannins. An impressively long finish completes this classic, smart wine. Now to 2025. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15219.

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2012Youthful, sweet vanilla and ripe blackberry aromas and dense, black olive and dark berry fruit on the powerful palate, with underlying graphite and leather notes. Needs time to evolve but will be well worth the wait. 2018 to 2030. 14.5% ref PF-AU17521 £39 bottle £468 dozen

‘Spicy and exciting. This should develop very well.’ Jancis Robinson MW

BIN 389 CABERNET-SHIRAZIntroduced in 1960 by Max Schubert, Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s’ or ‘Baby’ Grange (it is matured in the hand-me-down barrels). Always a cabernet-shiraz blend with cabernet predominant, made from multi-regional sourced fruit, it goes into American oak hogsheads for 18 months. 20-30% of the barrels are new, the rest having held the previous vintage of Grange and Bin 707, with offcuts from the latter sometimes included in the blend.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet-Shiraz 2009Classic cabernet cassis and herb nose with a touch of eucalypt. Spice and fruitcake flavour with rounded full body and a long finish. Delicious now, with the potential good Australian wines have to age and evolve. Now to 2022. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15216.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet-Shiraz 2011Still a little closed and would benefit from a couple of hours decanting. Cedar and plum aroma and flavour with elegant black pepper and spice developing on the attractive finish. Now to 2028. 14.5%ref PF-AU16841 £39 bottle £468 dozen

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet-Shiraz 2012Wrattonbully was a major source for the cabernet for the first time in 2012, which Peter Gago suggested added to the fragrance. Opulently perfumed nose, with bright blackcurrant, vanilla, mint and mocha notes and sweet dark fruit character on the palate. Distinctive, alluring wine showing great promise. Anthony Rose’s pick of the 389s. 2017 to 2032. 14.5%ref PF-AU17531 £39 bottle £468 dozen

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2007A delight now with exotic spice, earthy sous-bois and sweet cherry on the nose. Concentrated sweet mulberry fruit with a lick of toast and cedar from the oak. A long, fresh, slightly sappy finish adds to the charm. Now to 2018. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15220.

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2008From a great vintage here, this has intense aniseed, blackberry and stylish oak appeal with lovely crème de cassis notes and hints of olive combining beautifully on the palate. Firm tannins provide backbone. 2016 to 2030. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15220.

‘The best is yet to come.’ Peter Gago

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2009A wine of real precision. Intense sweet plum and ginger on the nose with an ethereal hint of violets developing with decanting. Luscious brambly fruit and in-balance firm tannins suggest a long life ahead. 2016 to 2032. 14.5% ref PF-AU15121 £85 bottle £1,020 dozen

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2010Deep crimson colour with a blackberry pastille nose. A juicy style, with bright, youthful, blackcurrant and sweet vanilla flavour with a twist of pepper on the finish. Plentiful but velvet-soft tannins coupled with concentration indicate the need for more time. Great potential. 2017 to 2035. 14.5% ref PF-AU16041 £75 bottle £900 dozen

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2011An elegant more perfumed expression of the wine from a lighter year. Mulberry, red cherry and violet scented; medium-bodied with fine tannins, and sweet dark fruit flavours well supported by the fine oak and a finish of real finesse. Now to 2022. 13.5% ref PF-AU16871 £79 bottle £948 dozen

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2012A great vintage, with a slightly European feel. A cornucopia of flavours and aromas: tobacco, pencil shavings and blueberry, with distinctive cardamom and star anise notes on the finish. Peter Gago really emphasised that this was ‘one for the cellar’ although he was confident that any opportunity to indulge in this wine wouldn’t disappoint! 2016 to 2028. 14.5% ref PF-AU17561 £95 bottle £1,140 dozen

MAGILL ESTATE SHIRAZA single-vineyard (5.2 ha) shiraz, with grapes coming from the best three blocks of this estate close to Adelaide. Fermented in concrete tanks and then aged in 65% new French oak and 35% American oak hogsheads, this is a sleek contemporary wine. Less than 3,000 cases made each year.

ST HENRI SHIRAZThe template for St Henri (multi-regional fruit with a tiny splash of cabernet and no new oak) hasn’t changed since the first commercial vintage in 1957. Fermented in stainless-steel tanks and then aged in large ‘ancient’ (neutral) oak vats, the wine is texturally very different from other Bins and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. Until 1989, this was labelled ‘Claret’.

‘St Henri is the most old-fashioned style of shiraz made in Australia and is often misunderstood.’ Peter Gago

Magnum of Penfolds St Henri 2004 From a near-perfect vintage, this is showing plenty of perfumed, exotic spice aromas. Velvety rich, cassis and mocha flavours lingering on the long seductive finish. Very tempting now, but in this large format good for cellaring for years to come. Now to 2032. 14.5% ref PF-AU11334 £130 magnum £780 six magnums

Magnum of Penfolds St Henri 2005 Crimson colour and herbal-tinged mulberry and bramble nose. Dense and weighty palate stacked full of hedgerow fruit flavours with a hint of graphite minerality developing on the finish. Now to 2030. 14% ref PF-AU12194 £130 magnum £780 six magnums

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2007A cool start to the season but a hot, dry summer led to concentrated lower yields and a dense, blackcurrant and liquorice-scented vintage. Brimming with complex cherry, truffle and spice flavours that last well on the long, powerful finish, this is showing hints of developed flavours but is delicious now to 2028. 14.5% ref PF-AU14381 £45 bottle £540 dozen

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2008A stellar vintage producing an exciting ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’-type wine. Deep, dark purple colour with perfumed blackcurrant and bramble aromas. Rich tannins underpin intense dark fruit flavours; described as ‘joyful’ by Pierre Mansour and Anthony Rose who compared it to the ‘98. Now to 2035. 14.5% ref PF-AU15141 £49 bottle £588 dozen

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2009A more perfumed style of St Henri with violets and prunes on the nose, lovely lift of acidity and vibrancy to the dark cherry and mulberry flavours. Grippy tannins heighten a savoury edge to the finish. 2016 to 2035. 14.5% ref PF-AU16051 £52 bottle £624 dozen

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2010A vintage which sold out in record time and it’s easy to see why (even Gago was too slow to get his allocation!). Layers of pure dark fruit on the nose and a fine, powerful palate; a classic St Henri. If you can resist, this will only get better over the next 30 years! 2016 to 2045. 14.5% ref PF-AU16861 £59 bottle £708 dozen

‘…wonderfully complex and really rather refined. Muscular and youthful but hugely impressive.’ Jancis Robinson MW

Half bottle of Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2010We are delighted to offer this sought-after vintage in halves as well, which, due to the smaller bottle size, we’d recommend drinking 2016 to 2040. ref PF-AU16862 £31 half bottle

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2011A little more elegant in style, the cooler 2011 has a pure cassis nose with a little herbal complexity. Tighter tannins, and bright acidity balancing the red cherry and blackcurrant flavours. Dried cranberry and leather just starting to show on the finish. 2016 to 2030. Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15222. 14.5%

BIN 169 COONAWARRA CABERNET SAUVIGNON100% cabernet from the grape’s South Australian heartland – Coonawarra and only a few specific low-yielding terra rossa blocks. This wine is partially fermented in open top tanks and aged for a year in new French oak hogsheads.

Penfolds Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010Only the second vintage of this Bin from Penfolds, and boy, it looks fantastic! Shows incredible finesse and complexity with fragrant cassis and blackcurrant-leaf aromas. Well-balanced mouth-feel with fine-grained tannins and concentrated blackcurrant, plum and fruitcake flavour. Long, luscious herbaceous finish. We were unanimously impressed with this wine, despite the debate that it was a little atypical in its more restrained, polished nature. 2016 to 2036. 14.5% ref PF-AU16901 £180 bottle £2,160 dozen

BIN 707 CABERNET SAUVIGNONMade since 1964, this multi-regional blend is referred to as the ‘Grange of cabernet’, produced only in the best years. The blend varies depending on vintage with cooler sites favoured in warmer years and vice versa. Part fermented and fully matured in 100% new American oak hogsheads, this is Penfolds’ flagship cabernet.

‘Calling this Grange’s answer to cabernet is a bit glib, but like Grange it has a strong stylistic consistency, it’s completely unadulterated … offering one of the most distinctive expressions of this variety in the world.’ Peter Gago

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2007Inky-purple colour, with intense blackberry, aniseed and malty notes on the nose. Powerful, rich mouthfeel, with cassis, sweet cherry and vanilla notes. Firm but integrated tannins are just starting to relax, but this wine will really hit its stride in another five years. 2016 to 2036. 14% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15217.

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2008A predominance of Coonawarra fruit here, though very different in style from Bin 169. Exotic spice-laden, black-fruited nose; smart oak aromas entice, but don’t dominate. A touch of savoury character starting to develop on the youthful cassis, mint and blackberry-rich, fresh palate. 2020 to 2040. 14.5% ref PF-AU14351 £209 bottle £2,508 dozen

‘Energetic, polished fruit… fresh as a mountain stream.’ Jancis Robinson MW

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2009More Barossa fruit here in a vintage marked by a 10-day heatwave at harvest. Fully ripe cabernet grapes give a wine that is bursting with plum, blackcurrant and sweet blackberry fruit. Oak still prominent on the palate but perfectly balanced by the deep, concentrated flavours. Still a baby, this is a complete, well-balanced and complex cabernet that will take time to really open up. 2020 to 2042. 14.5% ref PF-AU15111 £209 bottle £2,508 dozen

‘…very lovely and very long’ Tim Sykes

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010A great vintage for 707, this is showing a lot of malty oak and youthful black fruit now, but has great promise. Tight tannins and concentrated purple fruit character have a savoury spicy edge that hint at future complexity. Potentially the longest living of all 707s, Peter Gago believes. 2020 to 2045. 14.5% ref PF-AU16021 £209 bottle £2,508 dozen

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2012Highish proportion of Coonawarra fruit in this, the latest release from Penfolds. 2012 was a more variable vintage, with a milder summer, but short heatwaves contributing to an early harvest of tight, small-berried bunches. Dark purple, intensely perfumed with a stunning opulence and complexity. 2022 to 2045. 14.5% ref PF-AU17501 £209 bottle £2,508 dozen

‘… still elemental…but perhaps one of the best 707s to come’ Anthony Rose

RWT BAROSSA VALLEY SHIRAZRWT (Red Wine Trial) was launched in 2000 (the 1997 vintage) and is a Barossa-specific shiraz, aged for 12-15 months in 50-70% new French oak. Less RWT is made than Grange due to its geographical restriction.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2008Dark berry and dried plum on the nose with silky tannins and full, sweet prune and blackberry flavours. Cedary notes develop on the long, generous and complex finish. Now to 2032. 14.5% ref PF-AU14361 £85 bottle £1,020 dozen

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2009Youthful blackberry and spice aromas; full-bodied, rounded damson, mocha and plum flavours wrap around the palate. Though young, this feels very complete and there is no doubt that it would be perfect now paired with rib of beef. Now to 2032. 14.5% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15219.

‘This is very respectable! I have dispensed with my slight prejudice with the ’09 vintage!’Jancis Robinson MW

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2010From such a strong vintage this is still a baby, but even in its youth has a beautiful plummy nose and concentrated cherry, sweet blackberry palate. A delicious wine without edges that will gain complexity with age. A real treat to have in the cellar. 2018 to 2040. 14.5% ref PF-AU16031 £79 bottle £948 dozen

‘Hold on! Great Stuff.’ Jancis Robinson MW

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2012Lush, shiny and new, with bright black fruit and vanilla on the nose. GRANGE Australia’s ‘first growth’, Grange remains one of the most sought-after wines of the world. Usually over 90% shiraz with a small amount of cabernet, it is a multi-regional South Australian blend. Grapes are cherry picked from the best-performing vineyards each year, allowing for a consistency of style from vintage to vintage. Volumes are also strictly controlled to ensure that the wine bottled as Grange is only ever of the highest standard. Fermentation is in both tank and open-top fermenters and finishes in barrels. Maturation is in 100% new American oak hogsheads for 18-20 months and the wine is released after a further two-to-three years’ bottle ageing.

Penfolds Grange 2005A pretty perfect season, with good winter rains, an early spring and a long, dry summer. A captivating perfume of savoury spice, leather, blackberry and mocha with outstanding, concentrated and complex palate: cassis, mulberry, plum and Morello cherry vie with herb, spice and leather. Extremely long finish with flavours continuing to subtly build on each other. Now to 2035. 14.5% ref PF-AU13261 £289 bottle £3,468 dozen

‘Pure hedonism.’ Jancis Robinson MW

Penfolds Grange 2006A youthful feel suggesting a stellar vintage that will age for a long time. Blackberry-laden nose with spice and leather developing. Firm tannins underline a real core of concentrated dark-fruit flavour. Needs time. A long, sweet, ripe finish confirms the outstanding quality of this wine. 2018 to 2045. 14.5% Low stock. Penfolds Grange 2008A remarkable vintage where site selection was vital due to a record 15-day heatwave. Despite this Peter feels that this could be one of the best vintages he’s made. Complex, powerful, bitter-chocolate, red cherry and blackberry nose; ripe, well-integrated tannins and generous mouth-feel with concentrated plum and blackberry flavours. Penfolds Grange 20092009 was the earliest-picked Grange in 160 years, but the wine has rightly been gaining high acclaim and it’s easy to see why: complex, perfumed nose of dark cherry, liquorice, mocha and blackberry. Firm, ripe tannins, with concentrated bitter-sweet espresso and tart blackcurrant notes that persist on the long finish. 2020 to 2050. 14.5% ref PF-AU16911 £395 bottle £4,740 dozen

It follows the pattern of Grange and is a multi-district chardonnay, drawing on the best of the vintage from Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The wine is 100% barrel fermented in new and old French oak barriques and matured on the lees for between eight and nine months with battonage to build texture.

Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay 2008 89% of the blend was from Derwent River (Tasmania) and 11% from the Adelaide Hills (South Australia). 2008 is a great vintage, and the wine is incredibly vibrant and expressive. Grapefruit, flint and brine notes are evident on the nose with peach, apple and matchstick developing on the rich palate. Fresh nuts on the long finish show that this wine is perfect now. Now to 2020. 13% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15223.

Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay 2011 The proportion of Derwent River fruit increased to 95% in 2011, showing a consistent move towards Tasmania for this flagship wine. Very elegant lemon and white peach-scented nose, with a richer leesy brioche, grapefruit and baked-apple palate. A long, perfumed finish, cut through with lemon curd notes, suggests this wine is ready for drinking but will keep too. Now to 2020. 13% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15223.

Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay 2012 Pale in colour, this chardonnay has a very sophisticated lemon, verbena and matchstick nose. Tight lemon and citrus notes on the palate are supported by rich mouthfeel, and toasty oak. Bright acidity carries the flavours on the mouthwatering finish. Now to 2025. 13% Low stock. Only available as part of mixed case PF-MX15223.
