I have a BA Honours degree in Journalism and I have work experience across a range
of press, radio and public relations. I am currently working for Local women
magazine in Derry, N. Ireland as their Strabane and Omagh correspondent. I am
highly skilled in using Indesign, Photoshop, Excel and IRN. I am a very friendly and
outgoing person, with a positive attitude and determination to succeed in life. I am
qualified to teach English as a foreign language.
WORK PLACEMENT HISTORY
In the past five, six years I have tried to gain as much professional experience as
possible.
January 2011-present: Local Women, Derry
I am currently working for the magazine on a freelance basis. My duties involve
feature writing, interviewing, research and helping and organising photo shoots for
the magazine.
February 2010-May 2010: Kenyon Fraser Marketing
I worked for Kenyon Fraser doing outreach work, representing our client, the NHS. I
worked and help manage a campaign in Liverpool which involved getting five
thousand people under the age of twenty-five tested for Chlamydia. This position was
both challenging and extremely rewarding. It tested my ability to communicate with
the public in person and to understand their thoughts and opinions on the subjectmatter and provide them with customer satisfaction.
January 2010: Woman’s Way Magazine, Dublin Ireland
During my time at Woman’s Way I gained experience in writing for the different
sections of the magazine, such as health, TV and showbiz, fashion, real-life and home
and interiors etc. Whilst working at the magazine, I worked confidently and on my
own initiative, carrying out all tasks required, this included securing interviews as
well as carrying them out and writing up features. I had full responsibility for thespring fashion section, choosing the trends and styling the looks that I felt were the
most suitable for the magazine. I attended a press launch of a successful department
store’s new designer sunglasses range. I felt my networking skills were improved and
helped me become more confident in the public relations field. Despite being there for
only two weeks, I had my work published in ten issues of the magazine. My
journalistic and administration skills developed substantially working at this
successful publication. During the placement I had to cover on reception, which
allowed me to take control and allow for the smooth running of the entire publication.
Responsibilities included taking calls, organising mail and providing information for
customers.

January-February 2010: Mason Williams PR, Manchester/ Paversmith PR,
Liverpool
Working for both PR companies gave me a real insight into the industry. I wrote
press releases, compiled mood boards and came up with ideas for new campaigns. I
worked closely on Liverpool One with Mason Williams, helping to develop ideas for
activities for families for special events. I did a great deal of research for my
colleagues, which greatly benefited their client’s accounts. I really enjoyed
organising a press launch for Schwarzkoff Hair Colour range, in the Vanilla Club in
London, which is now currently an advertisement on TV. I had to contact key beauty
writers of all the top magazines and encourage them to attend. The launch was a great
success. Similarly, at Paversmith I worked on the press for the Liverpool Boat Show
2010. I had to organise the cuttings to show the client as well as organise the guest
list and write press releases.
September 2009-present: Liverpool Life: JMU Journalism website
Whilst at university I worked as a fashion writer, reporting on the latest trends and
writing features about the fashion industry. I regularly reported on the Liverpool
fashion scene, attending the city’s fashion shows. I contributed to the news and
features section of the website on a regular basis. Working for the website, helped me
work in a professional environment as I had to meet deadlines and communicate with
the other members of the team.
January 2009: Highland Radio, Co. Donegal, Ireland I volunteered for oneweek whilst on my Christmas break at a local radio station, where I was based in the
newsroom. Duties included writing news reports for broadcast on air, researching
information for use on a music and entertainment show at the radio station, organising
obituaries to be read on-air. I’ve learnt a great deal in working with Highland and my
confidence has soared. The tone and pace of my voice has improved, and I’ve become
more confident reading live on-air. In addition, I attended press conferences and
shadowed one of the female journalists at the station. This position called upon many
skills I had learned as part of my degree and tested my ability to put them into
practice in a ‘real world’ situation.
December 2008- January 2009: Strabane Chronicle, Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland
During my time there I got an insight into how the newsroom worked, and wrote a
number of local news stories. I produced a centre-double page feature for the
newspaper in December 2008, after getting an exclusive interview with X-factor
finalist and pop star Eoghan Quigg. This experience was the most rewarding as I got
to put my journalistic skills into practice. In addition, I wrote fashion articles for the
publication on the latest fashion trends. This was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed,
and it was my first real insight into life working at a newspaper.
July-September 2008: Finn Valley Post, Co. Donegal, Ireland.
