Greetings The end of the term is upon us. So much has happened at school this term. Our focus has been on giving back to our community. In the Term break there is an opportunity to give back to the community by supporting a clean-up at the Waitaki Community Gardens in Chelmer Street. Date Sunday 22nd April

10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. Supported by The Warehouse who will be supplying snacks and drinks. Looking for a family day event and want to support our local community get along and help.

Parent Education Survey results Our school staff were really encouraged this week to hear the results of a new survey showing strong public support for more Gov-ernment spending on public education.

This includes more support for children with additional learning needs and a significant pay rise for teachers to address recruitment and retention issues. Educators have been saying for a long time that to turn around the growing teacher shortage we must make teaching a more appealing career choice. A big part of that is ensuring we have the time and support to teach every child, regardless of their learning needs. Teaching also needs to be a financially viable career option.

The findings are a strong indicator of public opinion leading into the May Budget and teacher and principal collective agreement negotiations in the coming months.

Like every school, we struggle to balance the budget to provide the resources to support every child’s learning, and that shouldn’t be the case in a wealthy country like New Zealand. It’s simply a matter of priorities.

Other key findings of the research were:

83% believe that teachers need a pay rise and of those, 91% of respondents support at least a "moderate" pay increase - 67% want at

least a 10% pay rise for teachers and 29% want more than 20%

Most (82%) agree that a pay rise will improve teacher numbers and address shortages

Widespread agreement that there is a shortage of teachers, both at Primary and Secondary schools (85%)

Very strong agreement (91%) that more support is needed for students with additional learning needs ANZAC DAY Anzac Day falls in the term break this year. Most classes have done some work on this. Ask your children about it. POP Treat 262 children out of 265 earned the POP treat this term. Well done to all of them for making the right choices in a consistent manner. Have a great term break. Adventure Plus ScoutsKeas - is for Years 1-3. As a Kea they will make new friends while being able to learn how to work in a team. There are a huge number of activities including walks, camps, learning to cook on hobo stoves, water slides, athletics and games. Cubs - is for Years 4-6. The Cub packs offer learning programs where they are encouraged to explore, experiment and develop independence. In cubs they go on camps, bushwalking, cooking, mudslides, derby car racing and helping out in the community. Scouts - is for Years 7-10. The Scouts offer action packed activi-ties that encouraging them to make their decisions for themselves. The scouts go on outdoors activates like tramping, and rafting, or indoor activates like scout craft and pioneering. Venturers - is for Years 11-14. As a Venturer they will be able to make up their own programs, if it interests you go and do it with the Venturers. You can also meet new people and make lifelong friends and go on AMAZING trips. ADULTS - don’t let the kids have all the fun you can join as a leader and join in the fun with your kids and go on adventures with them. So come and join the best Scout Group in Oamaru, The Columba Scout Group at their Awamoa Park Scout Den. Look for the Ad-venture Plus sign Keas – Monday afternoon 4.30pm till 5.30pm. Cookie Fundraiser The cookie fundraiser is back!!

We will be handing out cookies to each year 3-6 student on May the 1st. This is the second day back next term. If you have a child in years 0-2, you can also get some cookies. Just pop in to the office.
