COMMANDER’S CORNER . . .

From the Commander:

Happy New Year:

We are at the beginning of the New Year, 2012. This is anew beginning. Many of us look forward to this time when

we make New Year’s Resolutions. It is also a time we setgoals to achieve this year. The New Year’s Resolution isthe statement of those goals. Some of our resolutions areeasy to achieve, while others will prove to be moredifficult. What is important is that we have made aresolution to try to become better.

Did any of your resolutions involve the Civil Air Patrol?

There are many areas in the CAP that we could make resolutions: We could resolve to be at more meetings. We could resolve to be more active in our Squadron. We could resolve to be more active at the Wing level. We could resolve to help recruit new members to our Squadron. We could resolve to help mentor new members. We could resolve to get another Emergency Service Qualification. We could resolve to get another FAA Certificate or Rating. We could resolve to get ready to be a member of the Iron Man Team.

The list goes on, and on, and on.

I hope that everyone has a Safe, Happy and Prosperous New Year. I hope that you are all able to keep your New Year’s Resolutions. I hope that some of your New Year’s Resolutions involve the Civil Air Patrol.

We look forward to helping you achieve your goals in CAP this year.

Safety

I hope you had a sane and safe new year! I am pleased to congratulate all of you for a fantastic 2011 in the safety arena and I can only hope that

you continue to put safety first in all of your CAP, work, recreation and home activities. Nevertheless, wecannot rest on our laurels or we will not improve and, most likely, we will actually revert to less desirableways.

It seems that we all have this inherit need to resolve to do something differently or maybe reinforce adesirable trait that has been in our minds, every time the calendar changes from one month to the nextor, certainly, from one year to the next. This yearning commonly manifests itself in a practice called “NeYear’s Resolutions” and, while most of these are made with the best of intentions, many don’t getcompleted quite as we intended.

With that caveat in mind, I am going to share with you some of my thoughts and intentions for the cominyear (OK, I’ll call them resolutions):

I will not make Beth wait beyond the end of the month for any of my safety articles in the NewYear. I will plan ahead and have them all ready ahead of time. (From reading some of Beth’s

pleading emails, many of us should adopt this resolution.)

Cadet Orientation rides will take my top priority in flying activities. Many of our cadet recruits view

this as one of the main reasons to join and I hope we can do better this year in providing this

opportunity for them.

Operational reporting procedures, even the most ridiculous of them, will be observed to the best

my ability and resources. The almost complete conversion of CAP reporting and logging to a

digital format has not been easy for an old guy. Nevertheless, WILCO Chad.

Operational Risk Management will be made to be second nature in all of my CAP activities. It

doesn’t take long to perform prior to any endeavor and can actually reveal obstacles that would

delay the mission if discovered by chance.

I will make the most of the really unique opportunities for recurrent or new training offered by our

squadron and our wing. If you were a private pilot, as I was for many years, you will realize the

value (both economically and professionally) that these opportunities provide.

Lastly, I will not pass up an opportunity to make a statement for Safety in any of my life’s activities

I may not be popular for bringing up my concerns at times but a lost limb or life cannot be justifiedin the name of congeniality.

Where did

2011 GO??

I cannot believe that 2011 isgone. It has been a rough year withthe tornados in April and then thefederal government curbing our

funding, etc. Even through all these adversities our volunteers have kept their head in the game.

We need to take a moment and look back to see what we can do better as welook forward to 2012. Just like before we go flying we need a flight plan, without aplan we are wasting our time, as well as our other volunteers time. So, take thistime during the holidays to plan your flight through 2012. This may include pickingup another rating, taking some courses, etc.

It is this time of year when the calendar clicks over another digit that we need todo some planning for the future. I know our squadron CO and DC have alreadybeen planning more training for our mission crews. We need more scanners,

observers, and mission pilots. If you know a pilot who would like to do some flyingwith a purpose have them contact Maj. Gosnell. If you are already a pilot you cancome up with a plan to do some flying. We need to fly to stay proficient. We havetalked many times about the difference between current and proficient. Just flyingonce a month will not cut it, we need to be comfortable with the aircraft and theequipment in the aircraft. If the weather will not allow you to fly, get on the computer and use the simulator to fly a flight. Another available option is to go to the hanger, pull the aircraft out, hook up the ground power unit to power up the system andbuild some flight plans. When was the last time you built a search pattern and flewit?

I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. Let’s get the NewYear started off right with a well thought out plan. Plan your flight today.

Did You Know? . . . Page 6

id you know that you cannot attend a Civil Air Patrol meeting, event, training or mission if your safetaining is not up to date? The only exception is for a new member. And that is only allowed for a shme. There are several members who have not completed the monthly safety training requirement.here are even some who have not taken the time to complete their “Introduction To CAP Safety”aining.

s mentioned above, you will be denied participation in activities if you don’t have a current monthlyafety training in eServices but, the penalty for not completing the “Introduction To CAP Safety” trainmore severe. Those missing this training may be moved to the “ghost” squadron. The penalties a

asically the same except that you are not listed as part of the squadron. The worst part of the pena

hat you cannot participate in any of the missions. And isn’t that why we got involved in CAP to beginith?

ever fear, if you need to get updated, there are easy ways to do it. First, go online in eServices atttps://www.capnhq.gov/CAP.eServices.Web/Default.aspx Next, look on the left hand side of the pander “My Favorites.” Find the link that says “Online Safety Education” and click it. On this next paglist of training that you can take. It also shows if you have taken any of it and passed. The very fir

sting is “Required Safety Course.” Under it is the course that all CAP members are required to takethe “Introduction To CAP Safety.” Click on it. You start by clicking on the link under “References/eading Material” and reading the information about the subject. When finished, you put a check mato the box to indicate that you have read and studied the information and then click on the link furthown the page that says “Start Quiz.” When you finish, if you scored at least 80 on the test, you passrint your certificate if you want too. Otherwise it will automatically be put into your eServices file. If ant a hard copy in your file, you will need to print it and give it to the records keeper, Capt. Scott.

Congratulations on the promotion.) If you didn’t pass with 80 or above, you will need to take the traigain.

his is the same process to take one of the “Elective Monthly Education Coursed.” Of course, the beay to stay current is to attend the meetings and hear the safety briefings. The Safety Officer will ad

hat training to your eServices account for you.

nother easy way to stay current on the monthly requirement is to read the monthly newsletter that isent to you by email, or you can find it on the squadron homepage at http://www.pellcitycap.org/ . At op, hold your pointer on “News” and then click “Newsletter”. However, you must email Ron Harlan amailto: [email protected] and tell him you have read it. He is the ONLY ONE who can enter this

aining into eServices. Safety courses offered by other organizations such as AOPA are alsocceptable however, you need to get Ron or myself to enter those also. Don’t be upset if we ask for roof of training though. And now you know.

Seniors Corner . . . Page

Attention all SENIORS !!!

The New Year has quickly come upon us. The first Senior meeting will be next Thursday, January 12 th.This will start our new schedule for the year of meeting every 2 weeks. The first meeting will be the firsthalf of BCUT class. Although this will be a review for many of you, it will be a good refresher for the up-

coming ICUT that will be required for all members. ICUT will be replacing BCUT and ACUT. Until ICUT isreleased, BCUT is still required for all mission ratings. We hope to have as many of you there as possible

We still need all members that qualify to fly as much as possible. We had a good December and need tokeep up the momentum. As far as I know, money is still available for flying Cadets which is highly desira-ble. We need to get all of them in the air this year. For members that are not current in the G1000 andwish to be, please contact Major Iddins for assistance. We all need to stay proficient in our aircraft.

I hope to see everyone at the meeting next week. If anyone has any questions, please email me [email protected] and let me know.

Honoring a Hero. . . Page 8

On December 22, 2011, Pell City Squadron Civil Air Patrol welcomed home Aaron Causey. Aaron Causey, along with his brothers, was

once a cadet in CAP when there was a squadron at the Anniston airport. But that isn’t the reason why we welcomed him home. Causey

decided to go into the military and was a dedicated soldier. He had such a drive for service that he decided to work with defusing ex-

plosives in Afghanistan. Sadly on September 7, an improvised explosive device injured him to where he lost both of his legs and injured

his hands. He stayed in Bethesda, Maryland, to recover and to have therapy. Causey said that by Christmas he wanted to walk through

the door of his mother’s house. Thankfully he was able to do that. CAP was there to give their support and gratude to this American

hero. We hope for a good recovery.

C/Lt Rachel Shurbu

*note from the Editor . . . Our squadron had 8 senior members, 7 cadets, and at least 4 family members present to welcome Aaron

Causey and his wife home. In addion to our group, there were over two-thousand others in the “welcome home” commiee. Our

cadets were asked to form a barrier to keep the crowd from rushing the plane, and Rachel Shurbu and Brian Sco were selected to

head the receiving line. That was quite an honor for them and our squadron. Connue to keep Aaron in your prayers as he undergoes

more surgery and rehabilitaon.

Character Development and PAO’s CORNER . . . Page

Character Development “His word was his bond” was a phrase my father used often to describe my Grandfathe

Larpenter, a hard working mechanic and father of 12 children. One day I asked my dadwhat he meant by that statement, and he said, “Your grandfather could walk into any bank

in town and they would loan him any amount that he needed without requiring anycollateral or signature. They knew that when Gilbert Larpenter said he would pay it back,he would.” I guess another way of putting it would be that Grandpa was a “Man of hisWord.”

Times have changed and no longer can a person walk into a bank and get the type of loan my grandfather could get. One of the major reasons is that there have been too mandefaults. People have good intentions but often do not follow through with what theycommit to or promise. When this happens, someone is left holding the bag.

This motto should still be a Character trait of those who want to be people of integrity.Let your word be your bond. When you commit to something, be faithful to follow throughwith what you promise.

Civil Air Patrol can only be as successful as its weakest members. Lets make it our gothis year to follow through with what we promise we will do. Remember that you are anintegral part of our squadron and are counted on to be faithful to meetings and support theactivities. You do make a difference. 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Shurbutt

Cadet Corner . . . Page 1

As the holiday season winds down, it is time to get back in the regularoutines that each of us has. I hope that each cadet, senior member and theiramilies had a joyous holiday season. Resolutions for the New Year haveossibly been made and some already broken. As we start this New Year, weave the opportunity to make it better than previous years.

don’t make resolutions, I learned long ago if I made one it was usually

roken before the first 48 hours of the New Year. Instead I think about whatwas right about the previous year and strive to do even better and I think bout what went wrong, not to dwell on it and bring me down, but to see whatlearned from the event and what was made right.

As January begins I can already see the calendar starting to fill. Of course, our first big event as aquadron is the WESS training on Jan 20-22. I know that in early spring there will be the Wingonference and awards banquet. There will also be Professional Development classes offered. The

adets already know that National Cadet Special Activities were listed for the summer on Decembernd that there are application deadlines fast approaching. For those cadets that are graduating highchool this year, the school year is already half over and if you are heading off to college somepplication deadlines have already passed and others will soon be here.

As I look at the activities CAP participated in this past year, so much went on! Some of the activwe remember included WESS, the Wing Conference in March, the tour of the Inzer Museum inAshville, tornadoes in April, professional development, encampment, Sunny King golf tournament,

outhern Museum of Flight tour, NESA, Advanced Technologies Academy, Iron Man, Cyberpatriot,

Astronaut speech at Southern Museum of Flight, Christmas Parade, AEX activities and let’s not forgO-rides. Wow! All this was done in addition to the preparation for your advancing in the CAP progras well as our home and work schedules.

So at this time I would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to all those thatworked tirelessly to make all these activities a success. Without you to make phone calls, send email

rive vehicles, and fill them with gas, make lists, (and check them twice), fill out paperwork by theeam, bring your cadet to meetings, send out yahoo, facebook and group notifications, look upegulations and forms, mentor cadets and seniors, take pictures, keep me straight, be available for .

whatever was asked, I sincerely say “Thank you so much for your service. We could not have achie

his without YOU.”

Aerospace . . . Page 1

Aerospace Hi

Hello to everyone. I hope you are rested anrefreshed and ready to start a new year. So ma

events happened in the world of aerospace thisprevious year both exciting and disappointing. The biggest news of the year saw the end of thspace shuttle program and the beginning of reacompetition between private companies to entethe world of space travel.

That was last year. Now on to the New YearI’m going to keep hounding all our Senior Members to study the Journey of Flight and tak

the test so you can receive your Yeager awardRemember that as part of your professional

development, if you receive your Yeager award, you have completed one step of Level IVrequirements on your way to your Garber Award.

We have 33 senior members on our roster at this time; of those there are 11 who havereceived their Yeager Award. From those 11, there are 3 that received their award in 2011so I want to say congratulations to those and Great Job! To the other 22 what is keepingyou from taking care of this? I know. . . little things like work and family obligations. They a

always there but don’t you think that the beginning of the year is a great time to startreading just a little at a time, then, before you know it, you are through and then you justtake the test. Oh yeah, the test. Well, it is in chronological order and it is open book. . . anoh yes, it is untimed, so you can take an hour or so and start the test, beginning at the froof the book and working your way through to the end. Not so bad, I know you can do thisNow go get started.

To the cadets I want to give you a heads up during the month of January, we want to swho can build the best paper airplane. Now you have till the meeting on Jan 26 to build antest your designs. On that nights meeting we will have a short competition. Two categorie

(a) longest flight in distance (b) longest time in air will determine the winners. Rules will beshort and sweet. Rule # 1:Each contestant will get one, repeat ONE flight per category. Treason for this is trial and error are to occur at home. I want you to bring a competitionready model to the meeting ready to take on all entrants. Rule #2: Nothing but paper to bused on your airplane. No gem clips, weights of any kind, rubber bands etc. will be used. The best PAPER airplane is the contest, not anything goes. Prizes will be awarded. GOOLUCK!

Trivia Question . . . Page 17

 Last Month’s Trivia Question:

Towards the end of WWII both Britain andGermany introduced a new type of aircraft, the jet. Both countries had been developing them since thestart of the war. The British aircraft was the Gloster Meteor. What was the German aircraft called?

 ANSWER: Me 262 'Swallow'

Most people think of the Komet, the Me 163, as thefirst operational jet aircraft, but it was rocketpowered. The "Swallow" was a very superior aircraft, which could out-fly and out-gun anythingelse in the air at the time, including the Meteor. Itwas, however, introduced too late to make a realdifference. Variants of the Me262 continued inservice with the Czech air force until 1951 whenthey were replaced with Soviet designs. The Me163 Komet is still the only rocket powered, manned, aircraft to enter operational service.

TRIVIA QUESTION FOR January:

In 1912 a competition was devised for seaplanes toencourage advances in the industry. Over its short history(it was only held 11 times) it developed into a competitionof pure speed. Which competition, reinstated in 1981under a revised format and using a replica trophy, was it?

Please send your answer to: [email protected] and put“CAP Trivia” in the subject line.    T
