Pelican Bay Women’s League Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 5 January, 2018 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Speaking for the entire PBWL Board, We Wish You Health and Happiness as we start a New Year - 2018! December brought us lots of fun with our Holidazzle Ball at The Club Pelican Bay. From all the exciting comments I received, our party was a huge success! If you missed it, make sure you attend the next time it’s offered. Our thanks go to Blanche LeCausi and Jennifer Jackson who worked very hard to make this a success….and it was! Professional place cards with the attendees names were provided by Blanche and Jen with “Holly and Dazzle” embellished upon them. (Very clever touch, ladies!) The food was excellent. Music by Cahlua and Cream was lively and we danced the night away! (My foot and knee still hurt, but it was worth it!) HA. Our December luncheon at The Club Pelican Bay was a sure treat with good food and joyous festivities. The Barron Collier Chorus, under the direction of Todd Peterson, welcomed the holidays with a medley of seasonal songs, beautifully performed. We are well past our first year of on-line registration and all is progressing smoothly, thanks to Blanche, our Web Director. Help is needed in that area and if you can offer assistance, we would appreciate it. Blanche is always there to guide you through the procedure, which is not complicated since all the original groundwork for start-up has already been completed. Please think about assisting us in this much-needed function. It is worth noting that only October, November, February and May are the only months that guests are permitted to attend our luncheons. Each function announcement clearly states who is eligible to attend, so please do not ask if guests are allowed any other month. Registration is final and no refunds are allowed as stated in our rules. Also, as we are speaking about the Website, over 85% of you are registering on-line and we are shooting for even higher participation. The newsletter has guided you through the registration process many times. Please use the excellent service we are providing on our website for instantaneous registration with just a few clicks on your computer. Our Speaker Series begins on January 8th with Adria Starkey speaking about women’s financial futures. This is sure to be an interesting talk. Our January 10th luncheon will be held at Quail Creek. I hope to see you there! Until next time, have fun, be safe and choose to be happy in all you do. Cathy Stenza President, 239-514-7387, [email protected]

COMMUNITY OUTREACH GROUPS

OPEN TO ALL WOMEN RESIDENTS OF PELICAN BAY COMMUNITY OUTREACH is our designation for some of the PBWL former Interest Groups whose purpose is to reach outside of Pelican Bay. Their activity positively impacts the greater Naples community and beyond. We’re very happy to have them represent the League in these important ways. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PB KNEEDLERS Jeannette O'Connor, 594-8179; Lois Sabatino, 598-2369, [email protected]; Hallie Devlin (593-1353) CELEBRATING OUR 10TH YEAR, the League-supported Pelican Bay Kneedlers, always welcome others to join this creative and satisfying group. If you are accomplished, that's wonderful, but don't worry if you can't knit or crochet. We have patient master craftspeople who love to teach! Just come to the Community Center on Thursdays between 10AM and noon to join this good-natured group who enjoy helping others. We knit, crochet and quilt wheelchair blankets for our Wounded Warriors recuperating in VA hospitals throughout the country, having given these deserving men and women more than 3,000 so far. While this is our major patriotic goal, we also make prayer blankets and shawls for nursing homes and hospitalized patients, and for outpatients undergoing dialysis in Naples. We have fun creating finger puppets and other toys for needy children and knit and crochet hats, mittens and scarves for youngsters. We recently created these items for the more than 200 children whose town was leveled by a tornado as winter set in. Chemo patients appreciate hats we give them, and we make other items as needs arise. DONATIONS OF YARN, NEEDLES AND PATTERN BOOKS ARE VERY WELCOME AND NEEDED. THANK YOU!

The Songbirds rehearse weekly, sing in unison and two and three part harmony, and perform in and outside of Pelican Bay. Some of the new songs to be added to this year’s repertoire are Be Our Guest, Singing in the Rain, Sugartime and a medley of Irving Berlin songs Songbird representatives were at the PBWL Welcome Back Coffee in November to supply information to those interested in joining our ranks. LUNCH & LEARN Barbara Wall, 254-1856, [email protected] PBWL MEMBERS ONLY

THREE EVENTS PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY!!

1. RAKU AT ROSEN GALLERY, February 1; 5:30 - 8:30PM; $55. The gallery is in the Naples Art District at 2172 J & C Blvd

Raku is a centuries old pottery finishing process that produces a lustrous, often metallic finish. You choose a

bisque-fired vase, then learn the history of Raku, while glazing your vase. While the vases are fired, we will

enjoy a casual buffet meal. After firing, the red-hot vases are plunged into metal containers and then quickly

cooled. You will marvel at the spectacular results of each uniquely finished vase. You get to take the vases

home that night. The cost is $55 and includes all materials, drinks & food.

organs, and reproducing and player pianos, all dating from 1790 to 1950. All these instruments have a musical

instrument plus programs that play the instrument, like a piano roll on a piano. Music choices run from popular

music of the day, operatic selections, light classical music, and early big band music. Bill Edgerton, the owner,

will give a very brief history of and explanation about each instrument before playing it. All are in beautifully

restored condition.
