Rawhiti School has had three cases of whooping cough.

The school is split across two sites with all three confirmed cases coming from their Seaview Rd site.

There have been none from the QE II base on Sandy Ave.

Another eastern suburbs facility was also hit by the disease last month.

An after-school programme had to call parents to collect their children after a child there was confirmed to have the disease.

About 20 children take part in the programme, and several others had coughs.

But it was not known if it was whooping cough.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesman said: “We do not have high numbers of cases in Canterbury and there is no indica-tion of a geographical cluster of cases anywhere in our city.”

More than 200 people have fall-en ill with the disease in Southland and Otago in the past two months.

But Medical Officer of Health Ramon Pink said it was very pos-sible the outbreak in the south would not spread to Canterbury.

He said the high levels of influenza in the community over winter made things more compli-cated, because the symptoms were similar.

Whooping cough is very infec-tious, and the symptoms can in-clude coughing, sneezing, a runny nose and mild fever.

This is a great story of one very gutsy, tough, utterly loveable German Shepherd pup called “ Jerry Lee”. At just 17 months of age we have seen Jerry Lee over 30 times since his first visit for pup vaccinations. Luckily for us he’s a big softy and has never put up a fight to all our palpating and needle pricking. Occasionally to get us back he rips out the IV catheter in his leg and looks quite pleased with himself.

Jerry Lee first presented with weight loss and inappetance over a year ago as a pup. He just was never fussed on eating – no food really tickled his fancy and he was offered the best premium foods on the market and lots of variety. He wasn’t growing as he should have for his age and he often seemed really lethargic and lacking in energy. He had diarrhea and vomiting intermittently, salivating often, but what really concerned his owners was that as a pup he just didn’t have the energy he should of had. He has been blood tested many times, xrays have been taken of his gut and Catherine has performed ultrasounds. There isn’t many tests Jerry lee hasn’t had. No abnormalities were really detected but we all knew he wasn’t right. Many times we treated Jerry Lee with lower fat intestinal moist food, occasional antibiotics, drugs to help with nausea and vomiting, pain medications and we kept his worming up to date. He’d come right initially but before long we’d see him back just flat and listless and basically anorexic. He was a real worry to his owners and to us.

In his wee short life he’s had three anaesthetics and come through them brilliantly. Jerry Lee never complains and honestly is the perfect patient to treat. He’s been under the knife to be neutered, he then had an emergency dash to the afterhours clinic as he suddenly developed a twisted stomach and spleen. Then most

recently I performed exploratory surgery to inspect his stomach, small and large intestines all his abdominal organs, biopsying in particular many sections of stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver. This is where finally we

got a diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowell Disease – aptly called Eosinophilic, Lymphoplasmacytic, diffuse IBD!!!

He’s a true battler and at least we have a diagnosis now. Treatment is complicated, lengthy, costly and it really places an emotional strain on everyone in the family as its very hard seeing your loved pet (and a baby at that), go through at times pain and discomfort. To be hit with IBD as a young pup is very unlucky but Jerry Lee is so totally loved and adored by his family who would do anything for him. It would be fair to say his vet bills have been large and thanks to PetPlan Insurance, a massive financial burden has been lifted from Jerry Lee’s family. PetPlan are covering the vast majority of all his care and we are all praying we can get this nasty disease under control so Jerry Lee can finally enjoy life to the fullest!!

Pet Insurance for your new pup or kitten is something worthy of a discussion. Most pet insurance companies will offer 4-6 weeks free cover initially for your new pup or kitten, which gives you time to look at all the insurance options. We don’t sell pet insurance but we give you information on all the pet insurance companies out there for you to investigate the best option for you. Some cover pre-existing conditions which is a bonus. It makes life simplier for us as your pets veterinarian as we are able to do the very best in care, diagnostics and treatment for your pet with the financial worry removed.

For more information on Pet Insurance or Inflammatory Bowel disease be sure to give the clinic a call.

The Southshore Residents’ Association has asked for all fishing to be banned on the New Brighton Pier. Kyle Knowles asked the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board members if they support the total fishing ban.

Andrea CummingsI’m still not decided. I think that

we need to look hard at making it available for all the users. I’m not in favour of the full ban. It may have to come to that but we have to work with all of the community to find a solution. It’s a balancing act and one that we want to solve and obviously we have very limited resources. We could make rules but then how to reinforce them and how to pay for them is something else to consider.

Linda StewartI think yes, until we can come

up with another solution but the next solution will cost money, I see it as a semi-permanent solu-

tion. One of the things I’d like if we are going ban fishing is to have more take-a-kid fishing days. That way we are not penalising people that want to be there and are doing some healthy recreation. I think the board can fund this too.

Tim SintesIf all else fails, yes. I’ve had

some plans drawn up for a clip-on platform. The trouble with that though is what happens if that gets filled up; they’ll just end up back on top. Maybe we

could ban it some days or maybe have a trial weekend. I’m open to anything but we just can’t carry on as we are, unless the city council comes along with a good idea. But they’re not going to put a guard up there all the time and if you tell someone to stop they’re not going to stop forever.

Tim BakerYes I do. I thought it should

have been banned for many years. I don’t like taking my kids to the pier with too many people fishing there. I support banning it alto-gether, I would support the idea of a platform if it was realistic but I don’t see it being realistic. People

should fish off the shore, you can get a great catch straight from the beach including rig. The big thing is keeping it clean because at the moment people aren’t doing that.

Stan TawaYes, I do actually. I think part

of the reason for that is a lot of things have been tried and I think yes, the total ban will work but only in-definitely just to test the waters to see what the effect is. There seems to be a culture where people take over the pier and the majority of the people can’t access the area they want. It doesn’t give a free flow and it can be quite an unsafe environment.

Glenn LivingstoneI’m leaning towards a ban

because my reading of the situation is it has become intolerable for the community. What I would like to see is a 360-degree

view on it. It’s very tempting to say we just ban it but it doesn’t quite work like that. We have to look at it from a 360-degree view. We don’t know whether it’s possible yet. The problem is that the pier is there for all to enjoy. We’ve trialled other things and they seemed to work for a while but it has still not fixed the issue. What we can say is the status quo is not working and I’m leaning towards a ban. I’m required to look at the report and take a 360-degree view of it though.

David EastMy view is that the pier was

built for all users and I’m a fan of fishing off the pier. Unfortu-nately we have a small minority that are break-ing the rules and creating a mess and making it unpleasant for a lot of people. We have tried to have an educative approach and sort out these issues but it just hasn’t worked. This process is going to take another few months so there is an opportunity for the people who are causing the issues to smarten their act up. If we can’t we are left with little option. In the short term the only option is to ban it for a while and look at some spe-cific fishing days, maybe one day a week. Another option is to have a fishing deck underneath. For me that is the optimum solution for separating sightseers and fishing.

The Rawhiti Golf Club’s committee and lawyer will go over a new 25-year lease agreement before it is signed.

One clause in the contract which was worrying club president Mene Mene was that the club has to inform the city council if they are to change the price of green fees.

Mr Mene said he would talk to the city council this week about the clause.

He said it was a little bit disappointing the city council included this and he was happy how the club was running the course currently.

City council sport and recre-ation manager John Filsell said there were a number of reasons for including this clause.

He said that included assist-ing the club in promoting the course and advice and support on the setting of fees.

“The club will be leas-ing part of a public park and

publically-owned buildings for the purpose of operating a golf course that is accessible to the community.

“Both the club and the council share a goal to keep the course accessible and the golf club sustainable, appropriate and innovative fees and charges are a proven mechanism for do-

ing this,” Mr Filsell said.  At the city council meeting

last week councillors approved a lease through to March 2040.

The first three years of that lease will be rent free for the club.

The club was seeking a 99-year lease but had to settle for 25 years.

The city council agreed to hand over the day-to-day operating of the course to the club as part of its Long Term Plan.

The city council wanted to close the course in its draft Long Term Plan due to op-erating yearly losses of about $200,000.

A new bus service has been proposed for Dallington residents upset the Orbiter has not returned to its pre-earthquake route.

However, that may not happen until next year.

Environment Canterbury has raised the possibility of using the No 44 bus to cover the Dalling-ton area via the recently opened Gayhurst Rd bridge.

ECan is looking at the feasibil-ity of continuing that route which currently finishes at the Gayhurst Rd, River Rd intersection, to Woodham Rd.

Dallington Residents Associa-tion chairman Mark Beanland said he would be pleased if the route was changed.

“It’s the best that we can expect. They (residents) really wanted the Orbiter back that way. They spent millions on the bridge and we still thought it was going back over there the night before it reopened.”

ECan public transport manager David Stenhouse said discussions will be held with residents about the proposal.

“We plan to meet with residents and to also survey those in the Gayhurst Rd area to understand

how many would use an extended 44 service and how often they would use it.”

He said 300 people board the bus between Gloucester St and North Avon Rd.

“This is a significant number, showing how popular it is. It is also evident there are a large number of

elderly users using the Orbiter in this area.  If we were to re-route it back down Gayhurst Rd, it would travel through a large section of residential red zone.”

Mr Stenhouse said this pro-posed change will form part of a wider review to be undertaken in relation to all changes made to the

network in December 2014.The review will take place in the

early 2016. Mr Beanland said the

association would definitely look at putting in a submission on the review next year but said it was no use pushing for something that was not going to happen.

Suspicious fireThere was another suspicious fire at Rawhiti Domain on Friday morning. The Fire Service was called to put out a small fire in the public toilets at around 2am. While small it was still treated as suspicious. The New Brighton Cricket Club was burnt to the ground in another suspicious fire three weeks ago.

RoadworksResident access to Pegasus Ave between Endeavour and Philomel Sts, North New Brighton, may be restricted for one week during a partial road rebuild due to start today (September 14). Repairs to sections of the earthquake-damaged stormwater system, footpath, kerb and channel are being fixed which is expected to take about one month.

CorrectionsLast week the Pegasus Post reported Izzy Riwaka won the award for best female vocalist at the Canterbury Bandquest. This was incorrect. Chisnallwood’s Michael Nehoff was the winner of this award. Izzy won best original song. The Pegasus Post also reported the South Brighton Residents Association plans to plant pohutakawa trees along Rocking Horse Rd, this was incorrect. The plans are for Bridge St. The Pegasus Post apologises for these errors.

BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCEThe New Zealand Schools and Barbarians Schools rugby teams will be announced to-day, after a three-day devel-opment camp in Palmerston North.

Out of the 53-man squad that was picked to attend the camp, six were from Canterbury, and two of those six were from Shirley Boys’ High School.

Skipper of Shirley’s first 15, Tom Christie, who plays as a loose forward, and hooker, Brodie McAlister were picked after outstanding seasons, by

national selectors, to be a part of the camp.

If the boys make either the New Zealand Schools or Bar-barians Schools sides, they will be travelling with their team to Brisbane at the end of the month, to play against repre-sentatives of Australia and Sa-moa over a two-week period.

On Saturday, the two New Zealand sides will play each other at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, before tak-ing on Australia Schools, Aus-tralia Barbarians Schools, and Samoa Schools in Brisbane, between September 24 and October 2.

Tom Christie

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICERFrosts, snow on the Port Hills, cold southerlies all belie the fact that we are in spring.

In fact, on the 27th daylight saving will start again. That’s just a fortnight away so right now is a good time to check out the specials on batteries at local supermarkets, in preparation to giving your smoke alarms a treat on the day and replacing the batter-ies.

I’m sure there will be some advertising from us about this but this is an eyes up that it is not far away.

Saturday night saw some easy chairs set on fire at the Sign of the Bellbird on the Port Hills. The fire spread into the roof of this structure and Governors Bay fire crew spent ages trying to dismantle the roof which was an ancient and intricate design to put the fire out.

More mindless vandalism casually de-stroying something that has been with us for 100 years. Those responsible sure make it easy to dislike them.

A householder in Rasen Place, Linwood, did the right thing when a fire started in her oven on Saturday afternoon.

She called us and didn’t panic. People tend to open the door of the oven but our lady was rewarded for actually doing nothing as she could see the fire diminishing through the glass until it was out when our crew arrived. That’s a good result.

If she’d opened it? At the very least the fire crew would have had work to do.

We are proud to present to the commu-nity our monthly review of events.

The Golden Oldie movies for September are: The Glenn Miller Story, 1954, on the 14th; Wuthering Heights, 1970, on the 21st and Vertigo, 1958, on the 28th.

Come early for a cuppa and a chat, and the films start at 1.30pm. Admission costs a $2 donation.

Students from Rawhiti School visited last month to learn about volunteering.

They were surprised to learn some of New Brighton’s icons were built by volun-teers, including the Roy Stokes Hall and the swimming pool on Seaview Rd.

There are new displays showcasing photos, trophies and memorabilia from the New Brighton schools which recently closed.

Our volunteers would like to keep records of the history of sports clubs or other clubs in the area, following the fire at the New Brighton Cricket Club.

We ask that clubs or ex-members with archives, photographs or memorabilia consider donating, lending or photo- copying these to ensure their history is preserved.

Please phone Bob Andrews on 388 6204, or contact the museum.

Did you know the New Brighton Cricket Club had its first meeting on October 16, 1907?

It took place in Misses Brown and Bell’s tearooms.

W. Neate, soon to be founding member and superintendent of the volunteer fire brigade, was captain; A. W. Owles, who would one day be mayor, was vice-captain;

and current mayor G. D. Macfarlane was president.

Through the decades, several families had more than one member playing for the club, including groundsman Peter Flintoff, who played in Four D with son-in-law Steve Narby, and treasurer Dave Jones who played in Senior A with sons Andre and Wade.

Learn more about local sports history at the museum.

The museum is open from 10am-noon Mondays, and every other day 1-3pm. We take bookings for school groups and com-munity functions.

YEARS BACK: A historical photo of a team from the New Brighton Cricket Club.

Preserving history of sports clubs Usually, this time of year,

as the days get shorter and the weather improves many people’s thoughts turn towards improving their diet and increasing their exercise.

If you are thinking about joining a gym there are a few things you may want to think about.

Be realistic, don’t just look at the equipment and the group fitness timetable. Be-fore signing a gym contract ensure sure you understand the terms and conditions. Is there a minimum length of time?

You may move house, change jobs or get sick. Is there a cancellation clause? It’s a good idea to take the contract away and from the gym, so you can read it without feeling pressured.

Read the gym contract and check out the cancella-tion clause. This will usually say when and how you can cancel or transfer your membership if you don’t want it anymore.

If you haven’t really tried a gym before, then see if you can get a trial or a short membership so you can avoid being stuck some-where that’s not for you.

Make sure you under-stand how the membership may be renewed. Check out if there is any roll-over clause. Often contracts

include a clause that say that at the end of the term the contract will be rolled over to the next term unless you give a few months’ notice to say you want out. If you don’t give notice in time then you might be automat-ically signed up for another year.

Mary signed up with a gym for a six-month term. After this period, according to the gym manager, the contract would just “roll over” – that is, she would continue to have access to the facility and she’d con-tinue to have her gyms fees direct debited each month. If Mary decided to cancel the contract before the term was up, she’d be liable for an early termination (cancella-tion) fee.

After eight months Mary moved to another part of town and couldn’t get to that gym much, so she decided to end her contract. ”It’s no problem at all,” said the gym manager, “that’ll be $100 in early termination fees please.”

What Mary had failed to realise was that after the end of the first six-month term, her contract was automati-

cally renewed for a further six months – it had rolled over. So unless Mary can-celled sometime between the end of the old term and the start of the new term, she’d be stung with an early termination fee.

Early termination fees are used to recover loss of income suffered by the provider, which they would have earned from you if you had not cancelled your contract. It’s also used to recover the cost of any hardware that you may have got as part of the plan (for example, the mobile phone that you may get free with your phone plan).

Lastly, if you are going to be paying weekly or monthly, check if you are actually getting into a credit contract. If your payment plan is not with the actual gym you might have to keep paying even if the gym goes bust and you no longer have anywhere to work out. If you aren’t sure then just ask the salesperson.

•To talk to someone about a gym contract or to volunteer with Citizens Advice Bureau as a volun-teer call 0800 367 222.

Her incredible results really do speak for themselves because Dr Lan Xiao’s patients are happy to tell anyone and everyone just

how amazing and how quickly the results of their treatment with her have been.

One patient, who suffered from chronic pain and depression for 4 years and tried both conventional and alternative medicine, says that she felt great after just one session. She’s keen to spread the word, saying that “it feels like a pressure has been lifted from her whole body.” Another who suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for many years used to struggle to find the energy to do her work. Dr. Lan gradually gave her her energy back. “It pulled me back from the brink … and I will be grateful forever,” she says.

Dr. Lan’s website is full of similar success stories, covering a wide range of ailments including everything from dyslexia to

Results that Speak for themselves

addictions and arthritis to stroke recovery. But just how does it work?

Acupuncture Without Needles stimulates particular points on the body, giving an instant release of energy and helps the body to heal itself. The treatment is not invasive or painful, and, as Dr. Lan explains, “the results are very quick and effective.”

Her ideas are revolutionary and are captured in her book “Dr. Lan’s Reflexology Network.” In it, she explains that unlike many other practitioners, she has found that there are reflexology points across the entire body and not just in certain areas, and she believes that her successes are based on her wider understanding.

As Spring comes along, many of us feel compelled to spring into action….dig the garden, clean up the house - inside and out, climb

ladders to clean out guttering, tidy back-yards, trim hedges etc.

This sudden burst of physical activity, after a winter spent in semi-hibernation, can often cause pain and discomfort in different parts of the body, stopping us in our tracks.

However, help is at hand from the osteopaths at Osteopaths on Ensors & Wairakei, where our UK trained professionals can bring relief, usually in just a few sessions. “There’s a misconception that osteopathy is only about bones and backs”, says osteopath Christina Creek, “but it can help with shoulder, hip, ankle problems and indeed any other musculoskeletal pain or indeed visceral pain, ie other internal problem.”

“We don’t just treat the problem area,” Christina continues, “we look for the cause of the problem and treat that first.”

Christina trained in the UK at the European School of Osteopathy, graduating in 1993, then went on to study paediatric

osteopathy in Melbourne, graduating in 1999. Living in NZ since 1993, she launched the Ensors Clinic in 1995 and the Wairakei Clinic in 2004 & both have been busy ever since.

“People with sporting injuries, people suffering from migraines or difficulty sleeping, are all able to be given some relief ”, says Christina, “with our gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques.”

All osteopaths have undergone comprehensive 4-5 year training and are registered with the NZ Osteopathic Registration Council and ACC.

So this Spring, if something ‘Oooooh---Aaaargh!’ happens to your body, pop in to Osteopaths on Ensors or Osteopaths On Wairakei and we will help put the spring back in your step!!!

can’t find a reason for the recurring pain.Teeth grinding at night and teeth

clenching during the day are also a major cause of muscle tightening.

Physiotherapy treatment for these problems is based on deactivating the ‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage therapy to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent,

Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377 2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz.

Ietje says.“We release the muscles to give

immediate relief, and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.”

Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress.

As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of these areas around the

face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the ear, forehead and round the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it seen to and the dentist

Parenting can be difficult when you’re together, let alone when you are separated. Parents or guardians may disagree on things such as

day-to-day care, contact arrangements, choosing a school or child care, or what happens with the family home. This can be distressing for everyone, particularly children/tamariki.

But there’s a lot you can do to make things easier, for both you and your children. Parenting Through Separation is a free programme now being offered by Family Works in various locations in North Canterbury, Selwyn and Christchurch, depending on demand.

By taking part, you’ll get practical advice about separation and planning for your

IT'LL BE A PARTYBIG

Billy T Award winning comedian and star of the hit feature film, What We Do In The Shadows, Chilean born New Zealander, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, brings his unique comedy stylings to Morrell & Co for one night only.

Following sold out shows in Auckland and Wellington during this year's NZ International Comedy Festival, this is one hour of award winning stand-up, not to be missed.

As seen on the Old Mout Comedy Gala and a regular on 7Days, Cori is one of NZ's finest young comedy talents. The last year has seen him attend the prestigious Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals as part of the What We Do In The Shadows team as well as attending the film's U.S. premiere in New York, whereafter, he performed massive shows across New York and L.A., alongside some of the biggest names in the industry like Hannibal Burress, Nick Kroll, Jeffrey Ross and Kristen Schaal.

WIth a busy second half of the year, which includes a recent addition to the family and more shows overseas, this might be the last time to see him live in

Christchurch for a while.

Opening for Cori will be local comics Snap RuseWebsites (self professed national sex icon) and Dylan Neale ('blind' stand up comedian).

Cori Gonzalez-Maucer performs this Thursday (17 th September) at Morrell & Co, 280 Lincoln Rd, phone 423 1440. Tickets on sale now at Eventfinda.

J ust Kids Community Preschool first opened in July, 2003, with an initial roll of under 25 children. Growth

was steady over the years that followed, and by 2008 we had a six month waiting list. In 2009, we expanded our preschool with the addition of 2 new rooms to cater for the growing demands of our community.

Through the earthquake events of 2010 and 2011, we were able to remain open due to only minor building damage. As we worked through the aftermath of these events, we made it our goal to support our families and staff as much as possible. We were also able to cater to many families across the east side of Christchurch whose centres were unfortunately forced to close. Toward the end of 2014 we had all turned a corner, and settled into what has become known as ‘the new normal’, with a growing roll and three wonderful teaching teams.

In March this year, due to increasing demand, and a firm belief in quality care, we opened a second room for infants and toddlers.

We believe that for infants and toddlers to feel secure in an early childhood setting they need quiet and welcoming spaces, low numbers and great relationships with the teachers looking after them. This is exactly the type of environment we provide here at Just Kids.

In our under two’s rooms, we have qualified teachers that engage children with meaningful experiences. We support the under two’s as they move through their developmental stages. It is important to us that our under two’s gain a sense of well-being and trust with familiar faces and caring educators.

We believe the children and their family/whanau should always be at the forefront of what we do, so we work

hard at fostering strong relationships between staff, the children and their wider families/whanau. We enjoy a high percentage of Samoan, Maori and Tongan families at Just Kids, as well as teaching staff from a variety of cultural backgrounds. We love the diversity these cultures bring to our centre!

In our most recent ERO Review in May, Just Kids was deemed to be ‘Well Placed’ as an Early Childhood centre. We believe this was recognition of our passionate team’s ongoing desire for quality care and positive learning outcomes for their children.

If you are looking for a preschool for your infant, toddler or pre-schooler please feel free to contact us or drop by and visit us. We would love to show you around our centre.
