BY KYLE KNOWLES

Earthquakes and higher green fees have been blamed for putting the Rawhiti golf course at risk of being closed.

The course professional of 21 years, Lynne-Marie Shaskey, who retired on Thursday, said the quakes and green fees were the main reasons the city council-owned course has struggled finan-cially in recent years.

The city council is considering closing the course in Septem-ber in a bid to save ratepayers $200,000 a year.

The idea has caused outrage in the eastern suburbs.

The Rawhiti Golf Club has taken over the running of the pro-shop and will oversee the collection of green fees in a bid to get the course back on track financially.

Green fees for 18 holes on the weekend are currently $25 which have increased from $15 in 2012. The city council has also proposed another increase to $27.80. Mid-week green fees are $20.

As a consequence this has seen the course make a net loss every year for the last five years, includ-ing a loss of $189,908 in 2014.

“Mostly the earthquakes (have been the cause), the biggest thing to do with it is the exodus of 10,000 people from the area. Golf worldwide is on a decline and I don’t know whether it’s people’s

time or the extra bit of money for recreation not being there espe-cially since the earthquakes,” Ms Shaskey said.

“I think the price has also had an effect. The city council keep putting the price up and that’s a bit expensive I think, $25 on the weekend is a bit dare.”

The city council has received more than 2000 submissions on

the Long Term Plan with 900 of them relating to the golf course, South Brighton Holiday Park and to fund projects such as hot salt water pools in New Brighton, a walkway along North Beach and repair of the Pages Rd Bridge.

The city council keeps records of how many people play at the course with numbers still sliding.

From July to December in 2013,

there were 9377 recorded people paying to play at the course and in the entirety of 2014 there was a total of 8441.

Ms Shaskey retired from the role on Thursday and the Rawhiti Golf Club has taken over the col-lection of green fees at the course.

The club will be doing this in the interim until the Long Term Plan is finalised. • Turn to page 2

The Canterbury Fire Brigades Gold Star Association will celebrate 50 years since its formation in November.

The association will hold a celebration over the weekend of November 27-29 in Hanmer Springs and all members are wel-come to attend the event.

It was formed by a group of serving and retired firefighters at a meeting in 1965 and the association planned to hold regular get togethers for those who had served in brigades for 25 years.

The association covers the area from Glenavy in the south, to Cheviot in North Canterbury.

Those members attending the celebrations will have a get together at the Hanmer Fire Station, a look around the village, an annual meeting and a barbecue

to conclude the weekend. Those wanting to renew their

memberships can phone president Trevor Ealem on 03 312 4695 or secretary Gordon Irvine on 03 693 8594 to receive a membership form and newsletter.

• From page 1There were concerns green fees were not

being collected at the pro-shop but Ms Shas-key said if there was no one in the shop she would have been close-by as she lives next to the clubhouse at the course.

She said the closures after the initial Sep-tember 2010 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks did not help the course either.

The course was closed for a week after the first earthquake and for six weeks after the February 2011 quake.

Rawhiti Golf Club president Mene Mene said he did not necessarily think it was the high price of green fees keeping people away but the eight different categories of green fees.

He said that was confusing for the casual players and wanted to streamline it.

To do this he has had discussions with the city council about possibly changing it

to four categories only; 18 or nine holes at the weekend and 18 or nine holes during the week.

Ms Shaskey wished the Rawhiti Golf Club good luck in the role of running the pro-shop.

A SEED IN THE EYE….OUCH!

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Willow is a lovely, placid young female Golden Retriever who has a fantastic life exercising with her owner and riding with horses on farms and at the beach. One lucky canine.

Suddenly in January of this year, Willow developed a weepy, sore right eye. This quickly progressed to a sticky eye that had a continuous copious mucky green-yellow discharge visible. There was no cough or sneeze heard. Her left eye remained completely normal.

Despite intensive, appropriate treatment and investigation from Willow’s primary vet, the discharge persisted. The right eye was now inflamed and irritated. Willow was still lively but wasn’t quite herself and she would hold her right eye partially closed.

Willow was referred to Dr Steve Heap in mid – March. At the clinical exam, the yellow discharge could be seen “welling up” from Willow’s lower right tear duct. As soon as the eye was cleaned more discharge would appear.

Apart from this infection of the lacrimal (tear drainage) system and the eye being inflamed there were no other problems detected. Infection of the tear drainage system is termed Dacryocystitis. Steve felt that the most likely cause of this was a foreign body – likely a vegetative foreign body e.g. a seed or barley grass awn that had entered the tear duct considering the terrain she frequents daily.

These can be very difficult and frustrating problems to solve at times. Under a general anaesthetic, Steve carefully put a catheter into the nose and into the exit of the nose end of the lacrimal system. This catheter was lodged firmly in place. The lower tear duct was partially opened. Water was flushed vigorously and copiously through this catheter. After about 10 mls of flushing, there was a blockage for period of 1-2 seconds.

On examination under an operating microscope, the end of a substantial seed was glimpsed. This was then grasped with forceps and removed!! A large “C’mon” was heard from the operating room as this was removed. The lower tear duct was then stitched carefully together.

Ten days post operatively, the right eye was still watery but there had been no mucky, infective discharge for the first time in over 2 months. The best thing was Willow was a lot happier, more energetic and playful than she had been and fully opening the eye. A great result all round and a very satisfying part of my job was being able to resolve the problem for Willow and her owner quickly and atraumatically.

▌▌ IN BRIEFTraffic lightsThe Burwood-Pegasus Com-munity Board has recom-mended to the city council to install traffic lights along Pre-stons Rd outside the Prestons subdivision. The lights have been proposed to be placed at the intersections of Te Korari Drive and Prestons Rd and Te Rito St and Prestons Rd. A give way sign was also recom-mended to be placed at the intersection of Prestons and Alpine View Rds.

Bowling club fundThe North New Brighton In-door Bowling Club has been granted $800 by the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board. The club was seeking $1100 from the board’s discretion-ary response fund for the purchase of coloured balls project.

Linwood marketThe last Linwood Village Mar-ket before its winter hiberna-tion was held on Saturday but it will be back in spring. The village market organisers look forward to its return in the spring. Located in the car park at the Linwood Community Arts Centre on Worcester St, the recently established monthly outdoor market has been a success. The market, a sophisticated version of a community project pre-earthquake, is part of the city council’s Master Plan initiative for the damaged Linwood Vil-lage shops.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

There has been a dramatic drop in the number of people using the New Brighton Pier.

Visitor numbers to the pier are down 36 per cent.

In March 2014 there were 12,575 visitors to the pier and in March 2015 there were 8043.

The numbers were down in Janu-ary also as 14,966 people visited the pier compared to 19,340 in 2014.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member Tim Sintes said he was not worried about the dip in numbers but was curious as to why they had dropped away.

“We had about 8000 over March which was a bit down on the same time last year. I wouldn’t blame the fishermen or anything else at this stage, however.

“We are still getting a lot of peo-ple to the pier, just not the numbers we’ve got previously. Each month has been down since Christmas compared to last year. It is quite strange really because we had lots of events on week after week and I thought it would pick up”.

He said the difficulty of driving to New Brighton could have a part to play.

Pages Rd is closed to traffic head-ing from the city to New Brighton with lengthy detours in place and Mr Sintes said New Brighton and Wainoni Rds were not the easiest to navigate.

Local businesses had not seen the low visitor numbers on the pier ef-fecting their trade either.

Salt on the Pier owner John Kteni-dis said he was aware the numbers were down but it had no affect on trading at the restaurant.

“I’ve had a chat to Tim Sintes about it and it’s surprising. We had a really good summer and I can’t answer why people aren’t on the pier. It hasn’t affected the first three months of trade”.

Pierside Cafe duty manager An-ukishan Kaki said he had noticed a small drop in numbers coming into the cafe but said that could be down to the long weekends taking people out of the city and the colder weather.

He expected visitor numbers to pick back up after winter.

New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said it was a mystery to him also but was not worried by the figures.

“I was quite surprised by this. I haven’t heard of any businesses hav-ing a downturn either. I’m not privy to everyone’s turnover but I haven’t heard of any down trading”.

He said if this was a trend over a year, or longer, he would be worried about the affect it would have on the businesses in the area, but not over a couple of months.

Housing NZ’s $350 millionThe disaster and destruction wreaked from the Canterbury earthquakes has created a chance for Housing New Zea-land to reconfigure and moder-nise its housing stock in greater Christchurch.

It is often said that out of di-saster, comes opportunity and it is this philosophy that is driv-ing Housing NZ through the final year of its massive earth-quake-recovery programme.

This work has a price tag of about $350 million and sees up to 5000 earthquake-damaged houses repaired and updated and the construction of 700 modern, warm and dry homes.

The earthquakes had a major impact on Housing NZ’s Can-terbury stock with more than 95 per cent of its 6200 proper-ties damaged.

Many were uneconomic to repair, others were located in the “red zone’’ and later demol-ished and cleared from dam-aged land. Thousands of others needed repairs so they could continue to be safe for tenants.

In early 2013, the Govern-ment charged Housing NZ with delivering a comprehensive programme of work that would see up to 5000 earthquake-damaged properties repaired and up to 700 new homes built.

When completed by the end of 2015, this would restore its Christchurch housing stock to

pre-earthquake levels.Housing NZ settled its earth-

quake insurance claim in April 2013 for $320 million. This money is being reinvested into the region to complete both arms of the recovery pro-gramme.

An earthquake recovery team, headed by general man-ager Paul Commons, was formed to handle the huge job of co-ordinating the repairs needed urgently, ensuring ten-ants were looked after, recruit-ing contractors and others to help with the repairs and to

co-ordinate the programme of repairs and new builds.

MWH and Arrow Interna-tional were contracted to over-see and co-ordinate the delivery of the minor and major repairs respectively.

Housing NZ has separated the repair programme into two specialised areas – the minor repair programme including repairs up to between $40,000 and $50,000. The major pro-gramme covers repairs over that figure.

At its peak, up to 1000 work-ers will be involved in the pro-

gramme, making it a significant cog in the wheel of the Canter-bury earthquake recovery.

Mr Commons said repairing earthquake-damaged proper-ties was a key part of the over-all programme to improve the quality of its social housing stock in the region.

More than 650 staff working across 16 suburbs are involved in this programme of work.

The team also includes a group of tenancy liaison staff whose role is to support tenants who need to have repairs car-ried out at their properties.

NEW: These five two-bedroom units in Elizabeth Rd, Riccarton were completed earlier this year.

quake repair, rebuild programmeIn many cases, tenants can con-

tinue living in their home while repairs are done but sometimes, it is easier for them if they are tem-porarily relocated to alternative accommodation while the repairs are carried out.

Mr Commons said there were many moving parts to the pro-gramme but a well co-ordinated management style across different arms of Housing NZ, its contrac-tors, building partners and ten-ants meant the programme had tracked well and was on schedule to achieve a challenging target set by the Government.

Both targets – repairs of up to 5000 properties and the construc-tion of up to 700 new homes – are to be completed by the end of 2015.

As at March 31, there had been 3624 completed repairs and 159 new homes built across the city.

More than 420 were under construction and 219 were being negotiated and evaluated for con-struction.

The new builds programme is helping modernise Housing NZ’s stock across the city with new warm, dry homes under construc-tion throughout Christchurch.

Suburbs throughout Christ-church – from the city’s western areas like Riccarton through to communities in the city’s east like Aranui and Shirley, which sus-tained some of the worst damage in the earthquakes – are getting new social housing.

An example of a new develop-ment is at Addington’s Church Square. Three separate sections that each accommodated a three-bedroom house were amalgam-ated into one title and 10 new two-bedroom homes were built on the new enlarged site.

Late last year, Prime Minister John Key visited this new development.

He was very impressed with the quality of the housing and also spoke to tenant, Paul Meek, who said he was thrilled to have been offered a brand-new home.

“I just love it,’’ he told Mr Key.Older properties are also getting

plenty of attention in the earth-quake recovery programme.

An innovative partnership be-tween Housing NZ and the De-partment of Corrections is already paying dividends.

Over the next few years, earth-quake-damaged houses will be transported to Rolleston Prison, where prisoners under supervi-sion, upgrade the houses.

At the same time, the prisoners have the chance to upskill their qualifications, raise their self-es-teem, keep themselves busy while in prison and help breathe new life

in those houses. The construction yard at the

prison site has about 50 houses ei-ther undergoing repairs. Seven are ready to be relocated and another seven will be ready by June.

The joint Housing NZ and De-partment of Corrections refur-bishment programme has already seen four completely renovated properties moved to an Aranui site where families now enjoy the warm, revitalised homes.

Over time, 150 homes in need of repair will be taken to Rolleston Prison where prisoners will up-grade them.

The work included recladding,

rewiring and replumbing the houses. In some cases, the layout of the house is changed so they can be better configured for future tenants.

The programme has been dubbed the Second Chance scheme. It offers a second chance to the prisoners, some of whom have found building-related jobs after their release.

Mr Commons said the agency was pleased to be able help pro-vide training opportunities for prisoners, while getting to recycle houses.

“At the end we get modern and fit-for-purpose housing for people in need,” he said.

The Second Chance programme, alongside the repairs and new builds work were all part of the overall Canterbury earthquake recovery programme that will, by the end of this year, not only return Housing NZ’s stock back to pre-earthquake levels but ensure much of that stock is new, modern or has had comprehensive repairs and maintenance undertaken.

Mr Commons said the earth-quakes created a rare opportunity to not only modernise existing homes but to add more new prop-erties into the region.

Post 2015, more new social housing will be developed throughout Christchurch as Housing NZ further modernises its stock and continues being the social housing provider of choice.MODERN: This Halswell home was built this year and is one of 700

new homes to built across Christchurch by the end of the year.

Flying visit at Marian▌▌READERS’ LETTERS

Pegasus Post readers respond to decisions made regarding recreational facilities in east Christchurch.  • I am a born and bred New Brighton citizen who has done around 60 years voluntary work and served on many committees.

During this time I have seen many changes in Rawhiti Domain, including the closure of the camping ground and the loss of new equipment (this may have solved our recent freedom campers problem), the archery being relocated from Burwood Park; and the school using part of the domain for a play area.

Since the earthquakes, Rawhiti Domain has gained a power substation, an extra pumping station and temporary earthquake accommodation. And now the city council is contemplating the closure of the golf course. What about the sports hub? This closure would be disastrous.

New Brighton people have raised funds many times for various projects over many years to enhance our district – the pier, the original mall, foreshore and play areas to name a few. These are all projects the city council should have provided.

We are also losing too many of the facilities from QE II to other areas of Christchurch. – Margaret Kelso

• The new pool placing should have priority over the school.

The cost of building this complex is going to be high, so it has to be placed on strong ground.

The school can place its buildings around areas that are classed sensitive and use this space as recreational areas.

As this complex is going to be used by both the community and the high schools it is also very important that we have a pool for little ones, a 50m pool with plenty of lanes, a 33.3m pool and a spa along the lines of the Graham Condon pool complex. – Aileen Trist

• I support the aquatic facility on the land at QE II taking priority over the schools, to be built as close as possible to the Travis Rd entranceway, so that it is visible and with easy access and plenty of car parking.

The schools can access their properties off Bower Ave where it is easier for their buses to drop/depart from.  The aquatic facility needs to stand out as an amenity for all of us to share. – Sally Kavanagh

•The Keep QE II in the East group has lob-bied hard for four years to get a new facility to replace QE II.

The QE II site means so much to our eastern communities. It is council land and it belongs to the ratepayers of Christchurch. The new facility is to be council owned.

The community board agreed that there should be full public consultation on the future of the QE II site. We support this deci-sion. The community needs to be heard. The schools need to be heard.

We have already had quite a thorough com-munity consultation regarding selecting the location of the new facility and QE II park was chosen because it matched the criteria agreed on by the community.

The positioning of the schools could result in the criteria for the facility not being met. The park itself is a real asset to our ward.

It is beneficial for our ward to get the high schools and we support them going on to the site, but not to the detriment of everything that will make our new facility and the site the best that it could be.

We are sure that with the right positioning for both it will be a win-win situation.

If the schools get priority it could easily become a win-lose situation for our commu-nity. – Jo Zervos, Keep QE II in the East

GRASSROOTS SPORT

BY KYLE KNOWLES

Reuben Spicer is 18 and just out of high school but has already played senior club cricket and rugby.

Spicer made his senior rugby debut for New Brighton in round four against Linwood after an injury ruled out New Brighton’s regular halfback

That was after making his debut for East Christchurch-Shirley’s

senior side in the summer against Riccarton where he made a solid 39 in a one-day game.

The talented top order bats-man was called into the senior 11 after only a couple of games in the second 11 and played out the rest of the season in the top side.

For his first game with the big boys of senior rugby, he thought he had a solid game in New Brigh-ton’s win over Linwood 28-25.

“I thought I held my own. I don’t know if I could have ex-pected too much but I thought I held my own even though I made a couple of mistakes.”

Spicer said he never thought he would have played in both senior sides straight out of high school.

“Nah I didn’t think I would actually at all. Definitely not so

early I thought I would more play colts this year rather than

seniors. To be fair I was only filling in for an injury.”

The humble youngster who was also captain of Shirley Boys’ High School’s first 15 last year said it was a proud moment not only for

himself but for his family too.“It was good to run out for my

first game. It was a proud moment and the parents were pretty proud too. It was good accomplishing one of my goals to play senior rugby this season.”

Spicer was selected in the New Zealand secondary schools’ train-ing squad last year and like every

young rugby player dreams of being an All Black.

While that is the ultimate goal, Spicer has some more reachable goals in the short term.

The sport coaching student at Canterbury University said he has set a goal of making the Canter-bury under-19s and then from there having a push for the New

Zealand under-20 side.“That’s a long-term goal for me.

I don’t try and look too far into the future. I want to make the 19s and play well there which should give me a good shot at a trial (for the New Zealand side), I guess it all depends on if I can make the 19s.”

He said the step-up from high school sport last year to senior men’s cricket and rugby was mas-sive.

Spicer said the physicality of both codes was evident particular-ly in cricket where you could not rely on other players to make the mistake. • More sport, p10

GRASSROOTS SPORT

Two Canterbury University students are juggling their studies with preparations for the Ulti-mate Frisbee World Champion-ship in London, in July.

Keith Algar, 19, and Chris Carr, 21, have both been picked to represent New Zealand in the men’s under-23 team.

Algar is in his second year studying engineering and Carr is in his fourth year studying engineering and biology.

Officially known as ultimate, the aim of the game is to catch the frisbee in the other team’s end zone. For the championship tour-nament the first team to reach 17 goals in 100min wins.

Carr said the sport offers a great balance of competitiveness and social interaction.

“It’s all self-refereed, which means that the players on the field are responsible for calling fouls. This means that players generally have more of a focus on playing fairly.

“I started playing in my first year at university to meet new people. The game has the benefit of attracting quite cool people and you make pretty good friends,” Carr said.

Ultimate has a small yet grow-ing profile in New Zealand, but has limited funding available. Carr said the costs of getting to

the world championship are dif-ficult to meet.

“The flights to London are the main cost, but as part of our preparation we also have a train-ing camp every two weeks and they’re usually held in Auck-land or Wellington, so the costs of those flights add up pretty quickly.”

Carr works when he can, as well as balancing training every night and full-time study as he works toward two degrees.

The whole family enjoys sport in their spare time; Chris’ brother also plays ultimate. His

father and vice-chancellor of the university, Dr Rod Carr, enjoys swimming and running, having completed the London, Paris, Athens, Boston, New York, Istan-bul and Antarctica marathons in the last 11 years.

Carr says that winning the ulti-mate championship would be the perfect underdog story, although unrealistic.

“Getting into the top eight is one of our goals as we finished 10th in 2013. It’s all about build-ing and growing the sport. It’s still tiny in New Zealand, but it’s growing rapidly,” he says.

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

There were six kitchen fires this week.

None of them burnt the house down but all of them caused incon-venience, stress, in one case burns and in all cases at least some damage.

In one incident in Arlington St, Burnside, all the occupants had to do once the smoke was cleared by Harewood’s crew was peel some more spuds. Unfortunately, to be eaten in a still slightly smelly, slight-ly smokey, dining room.

In Picton Ave, Riccarton, a quick thinking occupant threw flour over a burning pot on Sunday evening. Surprisingly it worked. Not quite the actions we recommend but in this case effective. However, the most effective action is to stay in the kitchen. Gives you the best chance to stop a fire as soon as it starts.

I’ve been in a few incidents over the years where ammonia has leaked. In the thick of it we would wear breathing apparatus but well away would be staff running pumps or whatever who were not pro-tected. When in that position quite often you got a whiff of the stuff. It brings tears to the eyes.

The occupant of a house in Broomfield got a fairly bad dose on Monday when his fridge dumped its ammonia contents through a leak. He required ambulance treatment. The Sockburn crew removed the fridge outside by which time it was drained.

[EDITION DATE]2

Thousands of young people attending the Christchurch Careers Expo over the next few days will be looking to their future transition

from school into the world of work. is is where the Careers Expo presents an unparalleled opportunity to connect directly with those most able to provide guidance and information needed to make informed choices for the journey ahead.

ere are skills shortages aplenty in New Zealand, for instance in building construction in Christchurch. e economy is booming, yet statistics show that a lot of young people are still not nding work, with unemployed aged between 15 and 24 at

Youth need guidance ontransition from school to jobs

unacceptably high levels. Director of the Careers Expo Mark Gillard,

does not believe that these people aren’t interested in work; he believes the problem stems from the crucial transition between school and the workforce.

Pointing to international research carried out by the UK’s Education and Employers Taskforce, Mr Gillard explains that there needs to be an increase in interaction between businesses and young people, when young adults are still at school.

“ eir research entitled It’s Who You Meet found that students from all demographics bene tted from early interaction and engagement with business, being considerably

less likely to end up without a job, outside of training or education.”

All new World of Work

In a bid to more e ectively bridge the gap between learning and work, we’ve developed a new interactive World of Work hub as part of the 2015 Careers Expo to bring job seekers and employers closer together.

Each year, around 160,000 Kiwi secondary school students (years 10-13) make decisions about their careers and life a er school, such as where and what to study and what they want to achieve in life. ese are huge decisions for young people, and the more

less likely to end up without a job, outside of

information we can provide to help make the best choices at this time, the better.

Being able to talk to someone ‘on the job’ or from an industry body can help clarify many of the questions that sit around the transition into the workforce: What is it really like to work in a particular sector? What are the costs of training? How long will it take? And, will there be a job for me at the end of my training?

Our new World of Work hub takes a close up look at the top 10 things employers want from potential employees, how to create a CV, interview tips, long-term marketplace outlook and skills shortage information, and hands-on demonstrations from those in the workplace.

Connecting with tertiary training organisations, industry groups and future employers is so important for young people to do. It is never too early to start thinking about their future and they should take advantage of opportunities to connect directly with future employers.

Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who. And it’s true that rst impressions count. e Careers Expo and the World of Work provide the ideal opportunity for young people and their families to scope out the wide range of opportunities that exist, and to talk through about future plans.

BY HUNTER SCHIRNAK

In a solemn occasion at Shirley Boys’ High School on the night of Anzac Day, students and teach-ers took part in remembering the bravery of the Anzacs by sharing inspiring and personal stories.

Headmaster John Laurenson emphasised that Anzac Day was not a time to glorify war but to honour the sacrifice.

Deputy principal Sue Nesbit spoke of her grandfather who served in World War 1 and her father in World War 2.

Head boy Dominic Bain spoke of the celebration of the peace which so many battled to achieve.

George Cox, deputy head boy, recited John McCrae’s touching poem In Flanders Fields about the hardships of war.

A wreath was laid by student Liam Walker with current teacher and former member of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, Dominic Bell.

Students were encouraged to research a New Zealand soldier from among the names of many on those written on six display boards.

Among these was one laid by student Hamish McLauchlan, in memory of a 23-year-old relative Alexander McLauchlan, of the Wellington Infantry Battalion who was killed in action at Gallipoli, in August 1915.

As the bagpipers performed a specially-written Gallipoli remem-brance tune and the Reveille and Last Post were played, there was

an eerie sense of reflection in a beautiful service.

Following this, each student was presented with a poppy and the whole student body was quickly decorated in red on black jerseys.

In a fitting tribute to the Anzac heroes many poppies were also later laid alongside the rows of white crosses below the school flagstaff.

Fourteen Christchurch high school students will get the chance to trav-el to Japan as part of a sister cities exchange programme.

Christchurch has had a sister city relationship with Kurashiki for 40 years, and opportunities for inter-cultural interaction between the two cities are organised each year.

The Student Goodwill ambassa-dor exchange programme has been running for more than 22 years and involves Japanese students visiting for two weeks, and then Christchurch students visiting Ja-pan for two weeks.

The 14 selected to go on the ex-change would also visit Kyoto or Osaka and go to Hiroshima to visit the Atomic Bomb Museum.

Applications are still open for students to apply for the exchange and criteria includes a strong in-terest in Japanese culture, being a goodwill ambassador when over there, being between 13-15-years-old on October 1 and being able to raise their share of funding for the trip.

The programme costs each stu-dent $3600 which covers all the costs for the 17 days in Japan.

Late applications this year will be accepted until May 17 at the latest.

Those interested in applying can contact the Christchurch-Kurashi-ki Sister City Student programme organiser Dan Fujikawa, on [email protected] or phone 027 275 2677

L’Oréal Professionnel expands its iconic styling collection Tecni.ART with new Tecni.ART Fashion Look Kits.

ere are ve kits altogether, each pairing two Tecni.ART products. When used together, the products help clients achieve one on trend look – the Messy Braid, Shaggy Lob, Bouncy Waves, XXL Volume or Asymmetric Pixie.

ere’s little that grounds a romantically e ortless look like the simple, single braid.

Braids have been hugely popular on the recent Fall 2015 Fashion Week runways, and a good one is eternally chic. So it’s probably no surprise Tecni.ART launches a Messy Braid Kit. e kit contains Tecni.ART Fix Design and Tecni.ART Super Dust for a textured, voluminous and stylishly lived-in braid while leaving hair rmly secured in place.

Bouncy waves this season have a slight retro vibe, think early 70s and French. Bouncy waves can now be achieved with the Bouncy Blow Dry Kit containing Tecni.ART Full Volume Extra and Tecni.ART Fix Anti-Frizz. Combined, the products lock in curls and give natural movement and sleekness to this style.

A voluminous style focuses on the hair’s natural texture, perfect for curly hair types. e XXL Volume Kit comprises Tecni.ART Wild Stylers Crêpage de Chignon and Tecni.

ART Pli, amplifying volume from root to tip while adding shape, texture and hold.

e pixie cut was a major hair trend last season, but this year sees the originally short style evolve in to a longer, so er version. e Asymmetric Pixie Kit contains Tecni.ART Fix Max and Tecni.ART Wild Stylers Depolish, o ering a number of styling options. Wear the look tousled, piecey and mismatched, or it can be fashioned in to a sleek side-parting.

FOODFeijoas: On the tongue and in your face‘LET food be your medicine,” said Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine. Am I right in thinking there is a resurgence in the inter-est in feijoas?

Just lately it seems every food (and many non-food) conversa-tions include feijoas.

For example, a friend is swear-ing by her sliced feijoa face mask.

Leave it on for 10 minutes and feel the difference. Well, feijoas are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, minerals and fibre so maybe this natural beauty aid could be promoted as a “superfood” facial!

And last night someone asked me what wine they should serve with poached feijoa ice cream. Smell the fruit then smell a gewurztraminer.

The aromas are so similar that

it’s really a match made in heaven. One advantage over their rival

kiwifruit is that feijoas can be enjoyed fresh or cooked.

Kiwifruit tend to lose their vibrancy when cooked.

Feijoas are ready to eat when slightly soft.

The centre section of the freshly cut fruit should be clear and jelly-like.

If the centre is hard and white it is unripe.

If it is brown and translucent it is past its prime.

To prevent the cut fruit from oxidising (going brown) I use vi-tamin C powder that I purchased from the local healthfood shop.

A little goes a long way. One quarter of a teaspoon in

three to four tablespoons of water is enough to prevent at least 500 grams of cut fruit from discolour-ing.

If necessary, the fruit can be drained before use. Lemon juice is another option, but for me, vitamin C powder is a necessary pantry staple.

Firm feijoas should be stored at room temperature to ripen. Once soft, keep them in the refrigerator.

Because the skin is tart it is not usually eaten although unpeeled feijoas are great in jams or pickles.

Q A&DO YOU HAVE A RECIPE FORZUCCHINI SOUP?Saute 250g chopped onion in25g butter, then add 250gpeeled and diced potatofollowed by 500g roughly-chopped zucchini.

Stir-fry a fewminutesmore, then add 1 tsp saltand 2 cups chicken stock.Cover and cook 20minutesor until vegetables aretender, stir in 1 cupmilk andblend until smooth. Addmore salt if necessary plusfreshly ground black pepperand 1 tbsp chopped freshherbs, such as parsley, chives and thyme. Reheatgently, sprinklingindividual serves withgrated cheddar.

WHY DO SO MANY DISHES CALLFOR AN ONION COOKED INBUTTER BEFORE THE MAINCOOKING?

For flavour. Some recipessuggest cooking untiltender but not brown, others go on until the

onions are golden orcaramelised. Either way it’sworth it if you enjoy tastyfood. You can cut theamount of fat used bycovering the pot while youronion cooks— the lidcollects moisture thatwould normally evaporate, and by returning this to theonion, it avoids burning.

To prepare the cake, place all the ingredients—except the feijoas—into a processor in the order listed. Blend until the mix-ture is well combined.

Fold in the feijoas. Spoon into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle the topping over the batter. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the cake is golden-brown and comes away from the sides. Great served warm with cream or Feijoa Pas-sion. —Serves 8

MONEY

For various reasons, women face a higher level of finan-cial risk than men. There are differences between men and women with regard to lifespan, lifestyles, income and prejudices which can have a negative effect on a woman’s financial position.

Women live on average about four years longer than men and, in a heterosexual relationship, tend to partner with men the same age or older. They are therefore much more likely to be liv-ing on their own in retire-ment than men.

Women earn on average significantly less than men and it is harder for them to save for unexpected expenses, their financial goals, or retirement. This is not necessarily an issue in a relationship where financial assets are shared, but the reality is that many relation-ships today end in separa-

tion or divorce.Women’s careers are more

likely to be interrupted by child rearing or caring for elderly parents. It has been said that for every year a woman stays home to look after a child, she must work five extra years to recover lost income, retirement sav-ings and career promotions.

A survey done in 2013 for the Commission for Finan-cial Capability showed that men tend to have higher financial knowledge than women. This is especially true of older age groups and as a result many women, particularly older ones, lack confidence in money mat-ters. Women worry about their long-term financial

futures and are sometimes more risk averse, however they are more likely to seek and accept financial advice.

It is important that women either increase their knowledge or obtain advice from someone they trust. The extra risks faced by women make it even more important for them to plan, especially for retirement.

Crucial for women to plan their finances

Wanganui Chronicle Thursday, June 13, 2013 31

It’s simply amatter ofstretching your targets

RussellBellBUSINESS ZEN

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting

and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.

Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving

these investments overseas. If your overseas investments

have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

circumstances be exempt from this

requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share

portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,

having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew

Zealand accountant or financialadviser on the implications ofleaving investment assets overseasis highly recommended.

For a good night’s sleep, it is important to have sufficient physical activity during the day. Deep breathing helps relieve stress, tension and

worry, improving sleep and health.Try to spend some time in the fresh air

and sunlight daily. Walking with bare feet on the grass helps to earth us with nature and can be quite effective, especially in the evening before bed to promote a good night’s sleep.

Nutritional supplements can be highly effective in supporting a good sleep by providing nutrients needed for correct muscle and nerve function and supporting healthy levels of brain chemicals that are needed to put us into a deep sleep and for relaxation.

GO Magnesium Sleep has been carefully formulated to support a deep, relaxed sleep. It contains a special blend of high

Nutritional researchers have discovered a range of nutrients that are essential for eye health. Some of the most essential

nutrients that have been shown to protect and even improve eye function are: Selenium, a trace mineral that is low in NZ soils and therefore in many of our foods. Researchers believe selenium may help prevent cataracts, macular degeneration (the leading cause of impaired vision in older people) and may also improve dry eyes and general eye health.

Zinc is a mineral that a large percentage of the population are low in. Zinc has been shown to help protect the eyes from the damaging effects of light as well as slow vision loss due to macular degeneration.

Vitamin C, citrus bioflavonoids, beta-carotene (provitamin a) and copper have potent antioxidant ability and help protect the eyes from damage.

Research supports eye health

Lutein and zeaxanthin are amazing nutrients that have been shown in landmark research to not only provide potent eye protection, but may even help reverse some of the signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Bilberry and blackcurrant, high in potent antioxidants, may help protect the lens and retina from damage and reduce the risk of cataracts. They may also help improve blood supply to the eye, strengthen the small capillaries of the eye and may help improve night vision, may alleviate many eye ailments, including eye fatigue that may be caused by reading, driving and computers.

Eyebright may help normalise eye pressure and reduce eye allergies.

Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for correct eye function. It may also have a detoxifying effect on the eye.

Vitamin B2 may help alleviate eye fatigue, bloodshot eyes and maintain good vision.

Yumberry is the latest in eye protection. It provides many nutrients, is rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) that are potent antioxidants that may protect eyesight.

These nutrients, taken in a therapeutic amount, should provide comprehensive eye protection, may slow and possibly even help reverse eye damage that could lead to loss of vision. All these nutrients are available in an economical once a day, easy to swallow capsule.

Now, with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and

healthy for their families throughout winter. Rising damp a ects many older properties

Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. SMOOTH-AIR PRODUCTSenvironment.  In case of poor or insu cient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or not e ective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stu ness. Harmful substances like dust and tobacco smoke can cause various diseases.  Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system.  In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, but as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

It is therefore important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.

Priced sharply - smart buying in Fendalton85 Totara St, Fendalton$975,000 6 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 2-car garage |Listi ng #: BE192296

My vendors have priced this spacious family home at just above RV - could this be the best buy in Fendalton?

Packed full of original character features such as the original wood panelling and leadlight windows with the bonus of double glazing having been carefully done in sympathy with the charm of the home. Modern e cient heat pumps plus a log burner bring the home into our 21st century standard required for warmth and comfort.

With two spacious living rooms and a large kitchen dining room, ve good sized bedrooms and a study (which can be a sixth bedroom if needed), there is room to adapt this house to your lifestyle while retaining ample space to satisfy the family. e laundry o the back of the kitchen is particularly spacious - you can safely hide the laundry in here until needed. A third toilet is located o the laundry as well. e two bathrooms are equally of generous size and quality tout, one downstairs for the master bedroom and the other upstairs for the family.

e upstairs is ideal for a retreat area for the children or if you have extended family, this could be used as a private living space with its own bathroom, living room and three bedrooms. A balcony from the living room makes a charming spot to sit and enjoy the sun.

e private rear courtyard will be a sheltered spot to enjoy the last of the summer before winter really sets in. Pleasantly

landscaped with a water feature and sh pond - there is also room for the green- ngered who may wish to have a vegetable garden as well. Usefully, there is a shed to securely store your garden implements out of sight. A large double garage will take a 4WD and there is o -street parking as well. With some thought there would be also the ability to create room to park a boat if desired.

Zoned for the two of the most highly regarded state schools in Christchurch (Christchurch Girls’ and Christchurch Boys’ High), now would be the time to secure your children’s entry with applications starting for enrolment later this year.

Call now – this is a well-priced home in a rst class area.

Open Home dates: Saturday, May 2; Sunday, May 3, 2.15pm to 2.45pm; and Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, 2.15pm to 2.45pm. See you at the open homes or to arrange a private viewing call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.
