Pegasus Flyer Preserving Hagerstown’s Aviation Heritage

Hagerstown Aviation Museum’s Fairchild C-123 Gets Ready to Fly!

Welcome to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum's 2nd issue of

the Pegasus Flyer. This newsletter will be published periodically

to keep the museum's members, donors, volunteers and

friends informed about museum acquisitions, preservation

projects, events and interesting museum activities.

The museum is extremely grateful to every person, organiza-

tion and corporation who over the years has provided the

support necessary for the museum to continue it’s mission of

preserving and presenting to the public the century long his-

tory of Hagerstown's aviation industry. It is with your contin-

ued support that the museum will fly home it’s C-123 and

create the museum’s first home on a site at the Hagerstown

Regional Airport.

You can support these efforts by participating in the

2018 Jeep Raffle on page 3 or by making a donation.

John Seburn, President,

Hagerstown Aviation Museum

The mission of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum is to pre-

serve the history of Hagerstown, Maryland's aviation indus-

try. This history spans more than 100 years of designing,

building and flying aircraft that have played significant roles in

world events. The museum has 21 historic aircraft in its col-

lection, 16 of which were built in Hagerstown. One of the

Hagerstown built aircraft is a 1956 Fairchild C-123 Provider.

303 Fairchild C-

123 Providers

were built from

1954 to 1958 at

Fairchild Aircraft

in Hagerstown,

Maryland. These

military aircraft

were used dur-

ing both the

Cold War and

the Vietnam

War to trans-

port troops, cargo and

vehicles. Today, only a

few survive. The mu-

seum's C-123 will be-

come a memorial not

only to those who de-

signed and built the air-

craft but also to those

who flew and main-

tained C-123s while

serving our country. A

tribute to Vietnam/

South East Asia veterans

is planned as a perma-

nent exhibit inside the

aircraft. The plan is to

paint the C-123 in the

camouflage paint

scheme and keep it

flying after it returns

home to Hagerstown.

Since the acquisition of Fairchild C-123 N681DG in Novem-

ber, 2012 much work has been accomplished. The largest and

most involved project was repairing the control surfaces. In

2014, the rudder, elevators and ailerons, each the size of a

small airplane wing, were removed and trucked to Hagers-

town. Museum volunteers

removed the old fabric, re-

paired the aluminum frame-

work of each part and recov-

ered these control surfaces

with new fabric.

A year later the finished parts were trucked back to Ft Lauder-

dale Executive Airport and reinstalled on the C-123. Work

continued on the C-123 over the next two years and in May

2018, a crew from the museum, with the assistance of C-123

experts Bill Schillig and Bob Gbur from the Air Heritage Mu-

seum in Beaver Falls PA, traveled to Ft Lauderdale, FL to

"wake up" the C-123 from its long winter’s nap. Systems were

inspected, fuel and oil were added to the engines and the right

engine was successfully

started.

The 1956 Fairchild C-123 is

a large military cargo aircraft

with many complicated sys-

tems including electrical,

hydraulic, fuel, and control

cables. The 62 year old air-

craft also has many parts that

are hard to find.

With all that’s been accom-

plished, additional work is

still needed to bring the C-

123 up to airworthy condi-

tion. The next C-123 work trip is planned for mid July 2018.

Follow along on Facebook.

The C-123 project has been a major undertaking for the mu-

seum. The continued support of over 400 donors and thou-

sands of hours of volunteer labor has moved the C-123 pro-

ject forward to its final stages of completion.

The museum estimates $20,000 is needed to cover the costs

of travel for the work crew in July, parts and supplies needed

for the C-123 and finally the costs of fuel, oil and insurance for

the flight home to Hagerstown, Maryland.

The C-123 must fly out of Ft Lauderdale as soon as all systems

are inspected and functioning properly.

Your support is urgently needed now to fund the final leg of

this epic journey. With your donation and purchase of raffle

tickets, the museum’s Fairchild C-123 will soon fly home to

Hagerstown.

Together, we can preserve this historic Fairchild air-

craft! Please do your part. Please give generously!

If you have any questions please contact the museum at

301-733-8717 or by email at

[email protected].

All donations are tax deductible, under the full extent of IRS rules (the museum is a 501c3 non-profit).

The 2018 Jeep Raffle will help cover the many costs associated with the inspection, repair, maintenance and restoration of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum's 1956 Fairchild C-123 Provider N681DG. In addition, the ferry flight from Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport to Hagerstown Regional Airport will incur expenses such as fuel, oil, insurance, travel and other costs. The funds from this raffle will also support the ongoing operations of the mu-seum. Join us on this exciting and challenging journey! The plan is to keep the C-123 flying after it returns home to Hagerstown. As work progresses on the C-123, the museum will post updates on its Facebook page.

By supporting the C-123 Homecoming project through your purchase of raffle tickets, you will be recognized with your name printed on a C-123 Donor Plaque mounted inside the aircraft. Tickets are $100 each or 3 tickets for $275
