What Is Poverty?

Poverty is the state of being extremely poor.

1 in 6 Americans live in poverty.

Indiana’s poverty rate in 2010 was 16.3%, which is higher than the national average of 15.1%.

The poverty rate in Gibson County was 10.5% in 2010.

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each year due to poverty.

Almost 80% of people in the world live on less than $10 a day.

How does Poverty Affect FBCS?

Did you know………?

21.4% of students in our school get free meals everyday.

7.8% of students get reduced price meals everyday.

Out of the 459 students at FBCS, 134 get free and reduced price meals.

What is the Affect on Kids?

Students may wear different types of clothes.

Students may not get enough sleep.

Students may lack motivation at school.

Students may act out in class.

Students may have a difficult home life.

Solutions for Poverty

Care and Share

Main purpose is food, agriculture and nutrition and focus mainly on food banks and food pantries.

Grace House Clothing

Provides eight weeks of apartment style shelter for the homeless.

Salvation Army

“Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”

Food Banks

A big warehouse that collects food and makes sure it gets to people that are hungry.

Homeless Shelters

Homeless shelters house those that don’t have sufficient shelter.

Food Stamps(SNAP)

Federal Nutrition Program that helps people stretch their food budget.
