hello

08 / MARCH 2013

The inaugural Peekaboo Design Awards are closing soon and then we’ll be faced with the hard task of assessing entries to find the best of the best when it comes to children’s fashion and design; lifestyle, travel and shopping; interiors, toys and more. You’ll have a chance to have your say too as the reader-voted categories open for voting at the beginning of June.

I’m excited to announce Junior Runway – Kids Fashion Week; an exciting new event we’re launching in Sydney and Melbourne to showcase the wonderful childrenswear brands on offer both here and overseas. Email us at [email protected] to register for updates.

We’re also launching a sister publication; an annual digital go-to guide for baby gear. Add to that the 2013 print issues of Peekaboo Magazine plus our digital Back to School Guide and Christmas Gift Guide and you’ll be set for the rest of the year for reading material.

A big thank-you once again to the amazingly talented Peekaboo team especially Vanessa and Belinda whose creative efforts, loyalty and late nights are evidence of how much we all love bringing Peekaboo to you. Without them there would be no magazine and I am so grateful to them for sticking around through what has been a tough few months.

I hope you enjoy this issue. Until next time.

HELLO I WON’T LIE; IT’S BEEN A HARD ROAD TO GET THIS ISSUE OUT BUT IT’S DONE AND THE ONLY WAY IS UP FOR PEEKABOO WITH THE WONDERFUL THINGS WE HAVE PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR.

SYDNEY FAMILY SHOWWHERE MOORE PARKWHEN MARCH 22-APRIL 1WEB WWW.SYDNEYFAMILYSHOW.COM.AU

We loved the Sydney Family Show so much we went twice last year. It’s just the right size with an old-school feel – big enough to spend half a day but not so huge it overwhelms. It’s ideal for preschoolers with carnival games, rides, ponies, animal nursery, Lego and dinosaurs.

HOOPLA FESTIVAL WHERE DARLING HARBOURWHEN MARCH 29- APRIL 1WEB WWW.DARLINGHARBOUR.COM

See large-scale acrobatics, intimate comedy and antics, fire-breathing busking acts and top roving performers. Test your family’s circus skills with juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking in the non-stop kids’ zone called Circus Works. All outdoor entertainment is free.

DISNEY ON ICEWHERE BRISBANE ENTERTAINMENT CENTREWHEN JUNE 27-30. TICKETS ONSALE NOWWEB WWW.DISNEYONICE.COM.AU

Cavalia is a fresh mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects often labelled an ‘equestrian ballet’. It’s a spectacular and moving tribute to the relationship between men and horses. The 50m stage shows the horses in all their splendour, nobility and strength.

Disney on Ice presents ‘Princesses & Heroes’ in the June school holidays. It features eight of our most loved Disney Princesses and their devoted Princes, evil villains, breathtaking skating, daring acrobatics, high flying jumps and a fire breathing dragon! Get your tickets now.

SURFER’S PARADISE FESTWHERE SURFER’S PARADISE, GOLD COASTWHEN MARCH 27-APRIL 21WEB SURFERSPARADISEFESTIVAL.COM

This is a family-friendly beachside event, showcasing entertainment, music, art and food from the best and brightest local talent as well as an eclectic array of cultural offerings and national talents. Experience tantalising food, art installations, live music, entertainment and more.

A LITTLE BIT OF BLUE WHERE GASWORKS THEATRE, ALBERT PARKWHEN APRIL 11-12WEB WWW.GASWORKS.ORG.AU/EVENTS

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival offers plenty of events to get families giggling including free family entertainment at Fed Square. With school holidays around the corner, the kids won’t be short of things to do with a fun filled holiday program too. Bookings essential.

Families are invited to play detective as professional puppeteer Jenny Ellis leads audiences on a mysterious journey through charismatic puppetry to uncover a string of puzzling disappearances from Mrs Mavis Hooley’s house. Families will love this interactive and educational performance.

MILLION PAWS WALKWHERE VARIOUS LOCATIONSWHEN MAY 19WEB WWW.MILLIONPAWSWALK.COM.AU

STORY BELINDA GLINDEMANN

THE ALIENS HAVE LANDED WWW.PLANETZIMMI.COM

Mobile entertainment meets the world of toys like never before with this cool alien called Zimmi (above). Download the Zimmiz app to your iPhone, insert the phone into Zimmi’s face pocket and instantly you have a super-cool, super-coveted new-age toy. Zimmi interacts amazingly with little users. You can play games with him and treat him like a real friend. And you can rest assured that your iPhone is safe and secure inside his soft, plush body. Designs for earthlings aged 4 years and up, he’s available in four colours. $24.95

GATED COMMUNITY WWW.DREAMBABY.COM.AU

You know you’re on a good thing with a Dreambaby safety product and here’s yet another reason why parents love the brand. Their new safety gate is made of a durable mesh and is retractable so it winds back onto itself on the side of the

staircase or hallway or doorway when not in use, saving valuable space. Clever hey? And that also means no more ugly, chunky baby gates to stub your toe on, trip over or look at – hooray! The product (above) comes with two sets of fittings so the one gate can be used in two separate places as needed. We love you Dreambaby! $94.95.

NAILED ITWWW.PUREPOPPET.COM

If you love a bit of nail polish (tick) and have little girls in the family home (double tick), chances are that those little girly fingernails will wanted to be painted just like Mum’s. The new Pure Poppet Polish range takes the worry out of dress ups and special occasions. Specially formulated for little fingers and toes, this nail polish is non-toxic and free of the harsh chemicals in normal nail polish (like ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nitrocellulose, acetone, heavy metals, formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates – remind me again ladies why we like to paint this stuff on our fingertips?!). It is waterbased,

low odour, long lasting but easy to remove and it’s Australian formulated and made which makes it even better. The Pure Poppet Polish range launched recently with five bright shades including Issy Pink, Poppety Purple, Yummy Yellow (all pictured above), Lucky Green and Bon Bon Blue and is available in a single or double pack. From $9.95.

WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? WWW.SIGNSAFEKIDS.COM

If school pick up is a circus in your neck of the woods (and when is it not?), here’s a product sure to make the pick-up line flow a little more efficiently. Sign-Safe-Kids have designed a Car-ID plate that’s personalised to your family name, is convenient, will fit any car visor, is easy to install and remains a permanent (yet unobtrusive) fixture. Carline mums, Elizabeth Adams and Sheila Eldridge, were unable to find a better solution to their homemade signs that easily went missing or got squashed in the car which is how Sign-Safe-Kids was born. $19.95.

Does your child love to climb, explore and treat the world as their stage? Flipside Circus is Queensland’s premier youth circus. Our dedicated circus facility in Alderley has all the equipment needed for your child. Flipside Circus offers classes for kids aged from 18 months right through to adults. The Flipside Circus Kindy Program acts as an introduction to circus in a fun and play-based environment. Parents get to join in the fun too as both adult and child learn circus together. Kindy classes (18 months to 5 years) are available on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Our circus program for ages 6 and above is managed by professional circus artists with qualifications in circus, dance and education. Classes at both beginner and intermediate levels run on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (beginners only) afternoons. Alternatively, the ‘Flying into the Weekend’ program runs at both beginner and intermediate levels. These classes include a variety of circus skills plus the thrilling flying trapeze. It’s the ultimate circus class that gets hearts racing! Be sure to enquire about our obligation-free trial class.

The Stafford Tavern has gone the extra mile to make younger diners feel quite at home here. The outdoor adventure playground will keep them moving while you relax at your table within view of the playground. And the fun doesn’t stop in the playground. There is colouring-in and other activities as well. The kids’ menu offers healthy options with salad and vegies and includes dessert. If coffee and cake is more what you’re after, Grinders coffee is on the menu and is the perfect caffeine hit while the kids play.

WORDS JANE WARDLEWWW.EATOUTWITHKIDS.COM.AU

The brainchild of kids’ entertainer Nicky-Noo, Ooniverse Cafe is a sanctuary for kids and parents alike. It has been created to spark the imaginations of the little diners, so they can have an adventure while you relax over a coffee. It’s brightly decorated with help from the kids and has toys in the corner to keep them entertained. Butcher paper and pencils will get them being creative at the table. Group time at 10am every week day ($3) is a fun-packed hour for the kids, with entertainment from Nicky Noo.

Grumpy Espresso has become a local hang out, thanks to its friendly staff and relaxed breakfasts. On the weekends it’s buzzing with families who come for a great coffee, breakfast and fresh juices. The kids are made to feel very welcome with babycinos and kid-sized milkshakes. When they’re not enjoying those, there’s a box of toys to keep them entertained. When you run out of milk or other necessities, Grumpy Grocer is stocked with the essentials as well as some treats to take home with you. Dogs are also welcome.

When it comes to reviewing cafes, you never know what you’re going get. Not so with Flood St Carousel in Leichhardt. Knowing this café was owned by Caleb Maynard, the previous owner of the fab Kelby’s cafe in Marrickville, we were quietly confident this was going to be a winner. So, armed with four kids on a busy Thursday afternoon, we took this great spot through its paces and boy, were we suitably impressed! The friendly staff welcomed the kids with babycinos, plenty of smiles and a small but mighty menu to choose from. For us, the food was tasty, the coffee hit the spot perfectly and the décor and the ambiance was bright and spacious with a cool retro vibe throughout. Comfy old-world couches, cosy little nooks and communal tables create a relaxed, grown-up atmosphere all while catering to the kids with a toy box, games and books and there’s even an enclosed playground right across the road. Most importantly though, the staff worked really well around all the kids and that alone is simply heaven for parents.

SYDNEYSIDERS: HERE ARE SOME COOL IDEAS

TO HELP WARM THE HEARTS OF YOUR KIDS

THIS AUTUMN

Sydney Opera House understands that the early years are a key time for a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. Their free Creative Play programs enable active and engaged learning for children through exploration, play, creativity and imagination. During the Autumn school hols (April 13-28), kids will be asked ‘Who wants to be a comedian?’. Harness the absurdity of The Listies and enjoy the installations and participatory activities for children aged 4 years and up, between 10am-4pm. And the best bit? It’s free!

Located in an old pie factory from the early 1900s, The Grounds of Alexandria is a beautiful industrial-style meets classy up-market chic café surrounded by a large outdoor oasis just perfect for the kids – so spacious and sweet, with perfectly manicured herb and vegetable gardens. The kids’ play area, indoor and outdoor seating, highchairs, a wishing fountain, deliciously hearty homestyle food, a fruit and veg market on the first Saturday of every month, not to mention coffee classes and yoga in the garden make this family friendly haven well worth the visit

WATERPLAY PARKSTEEL PARK, ILLAWARRA RD, MARRICKVILLE SOUTHWWW.MARRICKVILLE.NSW.GOV

Marrickville’s Steel Park is a lovely park in its own right with plenty of space, leafy trees and a great view of Cooks River. There are barbecues and sheltered picnic areas and it’s just next to the Debbie and Abbey Borgia Centre and the seriously child friendly Steel Park Café. But on a hot summer day, it’s Waterplay Park that’s the main drawcard. It’s safe, creative and fun for all ages with interactive fountains, sprinklers and misty spray elements (check closure period dates). When it’s time to dry off, there is also a great playground with equipment to suit both the littlies and older children.

With tables lined with paper, and pencils available for the kids, they can scull a babycino, have a drawing session and then venture outside into the fully fenced and gated area to play in the sandpit or just run and have fun. While the kids let off some steam you can enjoy the tranquil feel of the Briars and go for a stroll in the rose gardens after you’re done. They also hosts kids’ parties and run weekly gardening clubs for the little ones.

MELBOURNE IS FAMOUS FOR ITS

COFFEE CULTURE. HERE ARE SOME

CAFFEINATED FINDS FOR PARENTS

Kitchen Table Cafe is noticeably child friendly from the minute you walk in. It’s a relaxed, very cool cafe that locals have been screaming for. Good food, good coffee and it definitely caters for the little ones with highchairs, play space, a huge blackboard wall and cute little milkshakes served in old fashioned milk bottles. The vibe in here is a bit eclectic and vintage with cool mis-matched chairs and furniture and hanging wire cages and light fittings. The place is bright, clean and fresh with heaps of room to drive your pram.

This new Seddon brunch spot comes complete with great vibe, warm and welcoming atmosphere, a fresh and funky fit out and all the kid-hit items for your cafe culture-loving little ones. The cafe is big, breezy and spacious with ample room for prams to be parked at tables and for larger group gatherings. Hessian coffee sack cushions adorn the bench-style seating and other little details including vintage teaspoons and bright coloured coffee and tea cups add to the vibe. There are highchairs and a baby change table in the spacious bathroom.

Hidden in a quiet street behind Ripponlea train station, Hawk & Hunter is a hip and happening café suitable for parents with little ones. There’s always a great vibe with lots of happy customers but sometimes on weekends there can be a short wait for a table. Parking is convenient with lots of spots out front. The newly renovated space has a stylish industrial look with polished concrete floors, Tolix chairs and large pendant lights. My fave thing is the big communal dining table and the stunning handmade wall mural by DoReMe.

There’s one thing better than helping Mum at the kitchen bench, and that’s making a mess and having fun while you do it. Emily Dupuche, author of baby and toddler recipe book Food Babies Love, has three little pairs of helping hands on call in her Melbourne home.

“Parents have a duty to their children to educate them and ensure they have a positive relationship with food and nutrition,” Emily says. “The education extends to food preparation and the experience of spending quality time together as a family around food.”

Emily was a guest speaker at the Pregnancy Babies and Children’s Expo’s Education Centre in Adelaide this month.

“I’ve had such a positive response to Food Babies Love since its launch,” Emily says. “So many people have written to me saying how the book gave them fresh new ideas in the kitchen and new perspective on the importance of getting their baby off on the right track for a lifetime of food enjoyment.”

Here’s one of Emily’s simplest and yummiest recipes from Food Babies Love – one where the kids can help out at almost every step. The book is available for sale at the website and other stockists around the country.

Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Crush the biscuits to a rustic crumb and stir in cinnamon and sugar. Mash the banana very well. Stir in about ¾ of the biscuit crumbs, reserving the remaining to roll balls in. The dough should be soft and malleable but not too sticky, add more crumbs if necessary. Roll teaspoonfuls into balls and gently toss in remaining crumb mix to coat. Place on a baking tray and bake for 10-12 mins. Remove and cool. Balls should be moist but not gooey. Best eaten the same day but they can also be frozen and microwaved.

MARCH 2013 / 21

Parents with a little bit of interior design savvy will know the struggles around getting a new nursery or a child’s room to look and feel as sophisticated as the rest of their stylish abode. While many children’s decorator items on the market dazzle little eyes with garish multi-colours and crazy pattern, that style isn’t always conducive to the rest of the family home. And let’s admit it – at the end of the day (literally), don’t we just want our kids to relax and get a good night’s sleep in the calm environment that should be their bedroom?

Melissa Webster faced these struggles on both a professional level as an interior designer trying to find stylish pieces for her clients’ kids’ rooms and also on a personal level as a mum of three trying to decorate her home in a completely tasteful and stylish manner. So she decided to do something about it. And GatherKids was born.

Celebrating its first birthday this month, GatherKids is Melissa’s own label supporting a variety of the most delicious children’s soft furnishings you’ll find. Think organic quilts and play blankets, “supremely soft” knitted blankets, sheet sets, duvet covers, cushions, blankets and bibs all featuring quality materials, simple styling

and that signature GatherKids colour palette of muted earthy greys, creams and natural browns. It’s children’s linen that screams out to us big kids to curl up underneath it ourselves.

As well as the soft furnishings, there are several furniture pieces in the range including a wooden table and stools set and a fun natural canvas teepee, again, both conveying that easy breezy Scandi style that GatherKids is known for.

Based in Newcastle, New South Wales, Melissa began her career after school in visual merchandising with clients including kids’ boutiques and Myer, for example, on the Sydney central coast and in northern New South Wales. As her interest and knowledge in interior design grew, she decided to do a bridging course to get that “piece of paper” to make her interior design dream official. That dream moved even further forward in 2004 when she joined high-end Newcastle boutique furniture retailer, Habitat Living. During her nine years with Habitat Living, she carved a reputable name for herself and built up a design studio within the previously retail-only showroom. During her years there, Melissa says she always struggled to find just

the right pieces to dress her clients’ children’s rooms.

“There was nothing around that was sophisticated, with pared-back styling, that could match the rest of the houses I was doing,” she says.

The ideas and plans started bubbling around in her mind. Melissa said she spent the best part of two years researching just exactly where she wanted GatherKids to fit in the market before committing to the brand.

“I believe defining the style of a home needn’t stop at little ones’ rooms,” she says. “Family life, children, the ebb and flow of nature and my insatiable need to bring it all together in style inspired the children’s collection.

“We are uncompromising on quality so the GatherKids collection is incredibly beautiful and just a little grown up.”

In true self-employed business-owner form,

Melissa and husband Trent juggled daughter Kaila (now aged 6) and the births of two sons Blair and Kobe (now aged 3 and nine months respectively) while the GatherKids business idea brewed and was birthed itself. Now, with baby Kobe getting a little less demanding of Melissa’s time and enquiries for her interior design expertise starting to ramp up again, she is pleased to announce the opening of her very own studio in King St, Newcastle, in the coming weeks. But the news just keeps coming – and keeps getting better. Melissa will launch her newest label, GatherHome, at the Life Instyle trade show in Melbourne in August. Yes parents, our wishes have come true!

“GatherHome is an extension of the GatherKids brand,” she explains. “The products are all very

textural, made of organic materials and from ethical suppliers here in Australia and overseas. There will be quilts, duvet covers, cushions and throws as well as Scandi-style furniture like sideboards, a bed with leather strapping detail in the bedhead and some lighting.”

Melissa said a “sneak peek” of the GatherHome range was available at Kids Instyle in Sydney recently and it went down a treat with trade show-goers which bodes well for the upcoming launch.

While GatherKids celebrates its first birthday and GatherHome gathers its own momentum behind the scenes, Melissa says she still dreams of the day her products make it into Europe and the like. But for now, Melissa, we are quite content with keeping you here in Australia, designing up more and more muted beauties to help us make our houses into stunning homes.

1. A rug can anchor a room, soften hard flooring and provide a focal point. Choose one with plenty of tactile appeal like felted wool balls, chunky loop pile or soft shag. You’ll be surprised how much time you and your little one will spend on the floor. Round rugs in kids’ spaces are always fun.

2. Window furnishings dress the space and they provide the ever important sun block-out for day sleeps. Layer windows with a block-out roller or curtains for daytime and a sheer for filtered daylight. Ensure all cords are out of baby’s reach.

3. You can be creative with lighting in children’s spaces. Most importantly is the attention to soft night lighting. Why not use garlands or twinkle lights instead of traditional lamps? A dimmer switch on the main room light is a good idea.

4. There’s so much you can do with paint. Choose slightly subdued tones for bedrooms. Although this is a child’s space, they also need to be restful. Dusty pinks, sandy beiges and rich greys can all add warmth without being over-stimulating.

5. Choose furniture pieces that will grow with your child. Invest in a beautiful chair that can be reupholstered when it’s tired. Dress with a cushion and a beautiful throw rug that you can drape over you during night cuddles. Select a gender-neutral cot that can convert to a toddler bed. Choose drawers that can be reloved with a coat of paint down the track.

Corinne styled her son Elliott’s nursery in a calming ‘Surf and Sea’ theme. Tones of blue, beige and white, with a pop of sunny yellow, combine perfectly to promote rest and relaxation. The Peekaboo team especially loves the sea of waves on the wallpapered feature wall. This is kiddy styling good enough for any adult!

LILY’S SPACE The (restored) cot belonged to Lily’s mum when she was a newborn and a highchair in the room was Lily’s great grandfather’s when he was a lad. Priceless.

KOAH’S SPACE Simone’s new baby Koah only moved into this space at the end of January. Nothing beats an iron cot for pared-back style. And we are loving the aeroplane wall art.

BABY GIRL’S SPACE Bridgette’s unborn baby girl is sure to love her Mumma for styling this pretty room complete with pink chandelier. Every girl should have one, right?

SCARLETT’S SPACE Dark timber furniture pops against the light-coloured walls and woodland wall art. Speaking of which, we love the addition of the birdhouses to give the wall 3D appeal.

Jellystone Designs’ bright silicone jewellery range makes a bold fashion statement but it is also gaining popularity among another group of unlikely enthusiasts – children on the autism spectrum. Jellystone Designs director Tamara Grieve says that while the brand was originally developed with practical fashion top of mind, the realisation that the products were sought after by parents of children on the spectrum has seen her business focus shift more so into this area.

“What we’ve been told is that children on the spectrum are soothed by having something to chew on. Our silicone jewellery is robust and it’s BPA, phthalate and PVC free so it’s perfect for chewers,” Tamara says. “We are all about safety as well – it’s our number one priority and fundamental to our business. All of our products are choke tube tested and comply to this standard and we have also developed a safety clasp on our necklaces that opens if any force is put on the neck cord and therefore the wearer’s neck.

“Honestly, we didn’t realise there was a need for our products in this particular market but now that we do, we are working hard to support these children.”

Debbie Hopper of Like Skills 4 Kids is one of many Australian occupational therapists recommending Jellystone Designs as their preferred silicone chew toy brand for their young clients.

“Jellystone Designs are fun, funky chew products to help kids get the oral motor input they are seeking, or help to calm their nervous system, dependent on their needs,” Debbie says.

“Chew toys are great for children on the autism spectrum as they give deep proprioception input to the muscles of the mouth. Many children who have a diagnosis of autism seek out oral motor input. It helps children self-regulate their behaviour. Self-regulation is where we actively do something to change our level of alertness. Just think of the strategies that you use to keep awake in a meeting – fiddling with a pencil, moving your feet, maybe even seeking some oral input through chewing on a pencil or chewing on a sweet?

“Oral motor input changes our level of alertness and helps us to self-regulate extremely quickly. For example, if we feel a little tired or lethargic, oral motor input (that is, chewing on something) will ‘wake up’ our nervous system very quickly. Or, if we are feeling stressed or we are feeling a little hyperactive, chewing will calm our nervous system quickly.

“But it’s not only kids on the autism spectrum disorder who crave and seek our oral motor input,” Debbie says. “Just look around any classroom and you’ll easily pick those kids who like to chew on their pencils or chew on the collars of their shirts as well.”

Kids Therapy Network OT Cathy Love agrees.

“The principal of using the mouth for calming and focusing is applicable to children and adults, so there is an untapped adult market for the product also,” Cathy says. “We love the Jellystone Designs products because they are safe and non-

toxic and so groovy. We are tempted to wear them ourselves!”

Tamara says the most popular Jellystone Designs pieces for children on the spectrum are the junior heart, robot and owl pendants that are designed to be worn around a child’s neck (aged three years and over, with supervision). Other Jellystone Designs products specifically produced for young chewers include the padlock (with carabiner) as well as the chocolate bar, handbag, skateboard and smartphone which are all designed to be carried in a child’s pocket or by their parent.

And for fashion-savvy parents, the rest of the Jellystone Designs’ adult range, including the ever-popular bangles and necklaces, make stylish multi-purpose pieces that are convenient for whenever a soothing chew toy is required – whether your child is on the spectrum or simply teething.

While Jellystone Designs are built strong and robust, Tamara encourages parents to monitor their child’s chew toy for any sign of damage, especially when used regularly by aggressive biters with fully developed teeth.

Bogs footwear has a simple mission; ‘to provide the most comfortable shoes for the most uncomfortable conditions in the world’. As the boot of choice for many crew members featured in the TV show The Deadliest Catch these are far from the humble gumboot.

Established in the Pacific Northwest in 2002, Bogs was created from the desire to create an effective all-weather boot and the boots were originally sold into the farm and agricultural industry. Once word spread about their combined comfort and durability, demand grew and the range was expanded. The Bogs’ blend of unique performance features and high-quality materials began to keep feet warm, dry and comfortable everywhere.

Now available in Australia, the Bogs kids’ range includes classic block colours as well as patterned choices for both boys and girls. The majority of the kids’ boots include side handles to make pulling them on and getting them off easier and the feature has been kid-tested and approved.

The boots are waterproof and ready for anything. Insulated and constructed from durable hand-lasted rubber over a four-way stretched inner bootie, they are designed for optimal comfort and extended durability.

Bogs is also a company with a social conscience and is involved with many charitable organisations linked to their past. They regularly support farmers and donate funding to enable them to be educated in sustainable farming practices and growing methods, set up worker health programs and recruit young farmers to the industry. They also supply Bogs to people in need including recent survivors of Hurricane Irene who lost everything in the devastating floods.

Bogs staff also get involved in their local communities and often volunteer to take part in outreach programs to support local initiatives such as outdoor nature schools and urban farming communities.

PUDDLE JUMPING

WHILE KIDS’ GUMBOOTS ARE A DIME A DOZEN, THERE’S A DISTINCT LACK OF VARIETY. ENTER BOGS; A SUPER-COOL BOOT BRAND THAT’S SET TO GET OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT WITH AUSSIE KIDS.

Children love splashing around in puddles and in the rain – so you can imagine the excitement if their raincoat changed colour when they were splashing about.

SquidLondon are thrilled to have designed just that piece. The designers were inspired by childhood memories of running and jumping in puddles on their way home from school – white socks all grubby, shoes and toes saturated and a vey displeased mother to greet them at the front door.

The designs are a take on ‘his and hers’ with the boy and girl versions sharing the same designs yet different colours. The boys’ design is a mixture of blues, red, greens and yellow while the girls’ design is a mixture of pink, yellow, blues and red (above).

Your kids: Isaac, 9, Lucas, 8, and Jesse, 3

Tell us about the moment you learned you were going to be a Mum for the first time My husband Tim and I had been married for around one year and were both keen to start a family. It was an exciting moment – but also the start of a life of worry! Having children has been the best experience and after having Number 3, I feel like our family is complete.

How did you fare with your pregnancies? Pretty well. I had morning sickness for the first 6-8 weeks, at the time it was dreadful, but the remainder of my pregnancy each time was great. I tried to stay healthy and I exercised right till the end.

Describe the moment you held your first baby for the first time I don’t think I could express how special that first hold of each baby is. It is an unbelievable feeling. I will never forget that special moment with each of my boys.

Describe your own Mum in a few words My mum wrote a book about our family a few years ago – this is how I described her:

“My mum – attractive, petite, witty, humorous, intelligent, childlike, nurturing, soulful and strong. She’s our Rock of Gibraltar, our constant support. “

What lessons did she teach you? We had a saying to “surround yourself with good people”. I think it’s really valuable advice – I like being surrounded by fun, positive people who can inspire me and make me laugh.

Describe your own style of parenting I would like to think I am fair with my children. I have three boys so at times it’s a very energetic, boisterous household. I would like to think we have fun as a family but there are consequenses for stepping out of line!

What lessons do you want to teach your children? I hope they grow up to be happy, kind hearted adults who are capable of making intelligent decisions. Most of all I hope they are happy and all their dreams come true.

What’s the one thing you love most about being a Mum? Well, it’s the most exhausting but the most rewarding job. It’s great to watch them grow and develop and I love to be involved in all of their activities. I’m very proud of my three little boys.Ph

MARCH 2013 / 49

Your kids: Oscar, 4.5 years, and Polly, 17 months

Tell us about the moment you learned you were going to be a Mum for the first time I was in a public toilet, having snuck out from work as I couldn’t wait till the end of the day to take the test. When it came up positive I cried, called my husband, pulled myself together, reapplied my make up and headed back into a meeting with no idea as to how much my life would change!

How did you fare with your pregnancies? I am so far from the glowing, beautiful pregnant woman it is not funny. I swell up like a balloon and my iron drops to almost 0 so not only am I highly unattractive I am also a grouchy cow!

Describe the moment you held your first baby for the first time I actually have two moments. The first time I held my son was after a very long labour and an emergency caesarean so I was completely out of it. ‘My moment’ actually came when everyone else had gone home and it was just Oscar and I in the middle of the night. I was completely overwhelmed with how much I loved him and how much I wanted to protect him for

everything and I just couldn’t believe that we had created him.

Describe your own Mum in a few words Amazing, my hero and my best friend. She is always the first person I call no matter what the situation. She has raised four children, held down a full time job and supported my dad who runs his own business, all whilst always looking fabulous.

What lessons did she teach you? That I could do/be anything I set my mind to and that if you dress shabbily, they remember the dress but if you dress impeccably they remember the woman.

Describe your own style of parenting I am pretty easy going with my approach. I have accepted I am not perfect and that I cannot control everything. This did take a little while to figure out.

What lessons do you want to teach your children? To work hard and be nice to people.

What’s the one thing you love most about being a Mum? Watching my children conquer something for the first time. Oscar learnt to do a somersault this weekend and it was magical watching him realise he had finally mastered it.

KRISTY WITHERSINCY INTERIORS (FOUNDER)WWW.INCYINTERIORS.COM.AU

Your kids: Kate, 10 (I named the company after her), Luke, 8, (our Luke Michael Collection was named after him) and Sophie, 4, (our Sophie Elizabeth Collection was named after her).

Tell us about the moment you learned you were going to be a Mum for the first time I was so impatient to find out if I was pregnant I think I used up the chemist’s supply of pregnancy tests! I was so excited but also apprehensive about how I would look after a baby – I really had no idea. I’d previously babysat my niece one day and had to call my sister to find out how to change my niece’s nappy (I’d put it on backwards and it wasn’t fitting right!).

How did you fare with your pregnancies? I was very fortunate and really had very easy pregnancies without complications. I’ll never forget that horrible stage of morning sickness though.

Describe the moment you held your first baby for the first time It’s pure joy! Nothing in this world can compare with that feeling, the very first time.

Describe your own Mum in a few words Supportive, considerate, caring, selfless. She works fulltime but still takes the time to help out with the kids and also comes with me to tradeshows.

What lessons did she teach you? The values of honesty, reliability, respecting others and the importance of a good work ethic.

Describe your own style of parenting I’m always struggling to achieve the balance between discipline and love. It’s a difficult balance to get right.

What lessons do you want to teach your children? I want my children to learn that they each have a unique gift they bring to this world and to help them discover and nurture this.

What’s the one thing you love most about being a Mum? The cuddles and unconditional love your kids give. At this young age they love me just because I’m their Mum and each day I try to do the best I can and be deserving of that love and respect.

Working in a global corporation, managing its Asia Pacific area via teams in India and China and also regularly reporting to company headquarters in New York, meant Melanie Seears led a dazzling corporate career in IT. Her days were filled with paper work, phone calls, jet planes and frequent flyer points. Nowadays though, her days are filled with much different things. You see, Melanie has put the corporate high life on hold to focus on her new baby – On The Gro.

Based in Adelaide, On The Gro is the award-winning brand name behind such nursery gems as the Kush-ee Mat, the Everyday Essentials unisex nappy bag and everybody’s favourite “Why didn’t I think of that?!” product, the Imaginabox. Just like the majority of new mumpreneur businesses, On The Gro came about following the birth of Melanie’s first child, Angus, who is now 4 years old. Her second son Curtis, 3, came soon after and baby Chloe, 1, rounds out the Seears brood. While her corporate role had her head swirling with all things HR and IT, Melanie says she has always had a creative side. “I guess my job meant that my creative side had been suppressed for a long time, but motherhood seems to have kicked it off again,” she laughs.

While the ideas started flowing in 2009, it was in September 2010 that she launched the business with the Kush-ee Mat. It’s a self-inflating, waterproof, portable playmat that makes floor time safe wherever you are. Her Everyday Essentials nappy bags came about after she watched hubby James continually digging around in their nappy bag looking for items. The bag is unisex in style (so dads can be content carrying it), it’s waterproof, insulated and it features loads of clear internal pockets to organise everything while also eliminating the ‘dig’ factor. Genius. But, by far, her most genius idea to date has been the Imaginabox range. With an Imaginabox, kids can pimp up a plain old cardboard box into a train, plane, car or even an oven with reusable stickers and other

plastic components. For example, an Imaginabox car pack includes reusable dashboard and wheel stickers as well as a moving plastic steering wheel. The Imaginabox oven pack includes sticker versions of hot plates, an oven door, control panel, roast chicken and a cake, and there’s a plastic door handle and four plastic oven knobs to complete your cardboard oven masterpiece. Melanie says she is always stopped by people who make the “Why didn’t I think of that?!” comment about her Imaginabox range. Funnily enough, the concept came about quite by chance. Melanie says she and James had been on a trip away from the family to Sydney one time and bought home a toy cooking set for the two boys as a little present. With all the bibs and bobs removed from the box, the family realised they didn’t have any play kitchen equipment to use their new cooking set on. Melanie had a lightbulb moment and, with the help of a picture of a stovetop printed from her computer, she fashioned up a pretend cooktop by reusing the box the cooking set came in. “It just snowballed from there,” she says. “We started looking at boxes around the house – the boys would always get into the nappy boxes to play cars so we had to include a car in the range.”

Melanie says while the products in her range may seem very different and somewhat random, the common thread is innovation, practicality and affordability. “They provide simple solutions to everyday problems,” she says. “I refuse to do something that has already been done. That’s fundamental to my business.”

Melanie admits that her On The Gro product range has developed and grown as the needs of her very own children have developed and grown, and it will continue to evolve this way.“My kids are the chief product testers,” she laughs. “Motherhood continues to be a vital source of motivation for developing the range. I am always learning from our children and recognising their need for creative and fun play which I then utilise

across my ideas and products.”

Since its launch in 2010, On The Gro can now also be found internationally in places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and South Africa with targets on Europe and the United Kingdom this year. While Melanie remains tightlipped about what actually is on the On The Gro drawing board for 2013, she did tell us there are more Imaginaboxes on the way as well as another exciting “invention”. “We are busy behind the scenes,” she says.

And while her customers continue to provide Melanie with enthusiastic feedback, she has received many product awards and other personal awards (Melanie was named South Australian Young Entrepreneur of The Year in 2011) to cement her place in the market. So, from the front room of her 1800s cottage in the Adelaide Hills, with a leafy view of the garden from her office window, Melanie will continue to create those products that will have us parents continuing to scratch our heads and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”.

She sat in our driveway gleaming in the Saturday morning sun, a glint in her headlight eyes and a seemingly eager expression on her front-grill face. Her fabulous bouffant hairstyle was an early indicator that she was, in fact, a she. And it occurred to us – she needed a name.

I asked the two Little Misses to come up with three options each, which would be scrutinised by the official judging panel (read: hubby and I) with a winning entry announced posthaste.“Pete Murray, Miss Trudy and, ummm, Dynamite!” Miss 4 announced. Her first two options were quickly nixed because a) Pete Murray is the name of one of our faithful chickens (and/or an Aussie music legend) and b) Miss Trudy was Miss 4’s daycare teacher and that would just be too confusing. Miss 6 had a few more ideas: Vanessa Van, Ruby and Marge. Marge had a certain ring to it and given this lady’s high, wavy hairdo not unlike the other famous Marge (Simpson) we knew, the name stuck. Marge Motorhome.

Marge was actually an Apollo Euro Deluxe six-berth motorhome and she would be taking our family on our first motorhome road trip north of Brisbane to the coastal towns of Rainbow Beach, Elliott Heads, Mon Repos and Agnes Waters. You see, it was turtle nesting season here in Queensland and we were all chomping at the bit to see in real life what we had only seen before in tourist brochures – mother turtles ambling up the beach to lay eggs and hopefully we’d also see some hatchlings emerging from their sandy nests. But before we got too excited, we had to get to know Marge.

Our family is lucky to have experienced many types of family holidays. We’ve done caravan and camping holidays, beach house holidays, ski holidays, a cruiseship holiday and international ‘aeroplane’ holidays but this was our first in a motorhome. Moving our luggage, food and other necessities into Marge, while she was parked conveniently

outside our front door, was easy and fun. Like setting up house. And it occurred to us that we wouldn’t have to unpack our belongings and set up again on arrival (like when caravanning or staying at a holiday house) – this was our holiday house.

The kids quickly allocated themselves the best bed, up the ladder in the “cubbyhouse” which was inside the bubble that was Marge’s bouffant hairdo. Her layout was surprisingly spacious. Down one side, she offered a dining area with table (which conveniently folded down to form a second bed) and a shower/toilet cubicle. On the opposite side was a long kitchen bench with fridge, sink, gas cooktop, rangehood, TV and microwave. Miss 4 studied the kitchen area for several moments, eyes tracking left and right and left again, before she started tugging at my shorts. “Mumma, there’s no dishwasher. How are we going to wash the plates?” she wondered. First-world problem, yes?

Beyond the dishwasher-less kitchen at the back of Marge was a super-comfy lounge area with another table. Again, this table cleverly folded down to form a large third bed. What was fabulous about Marge were all her nifty bits and pieces like thick curtains to divide the interior into private zones, all the many storage nooks and cupboards, a fold-down hand basin in the toilet (smart!), the hanging TV complete with DVD player and USB port that could be swivelled around and enjoyed from all locations, and even a teatowel rack. Once we’d filled Marge with our goods and chattels, we strapped the kids into their booster seats (which were alongside the dining table - read: travelling art and craft centre – a Godsend for long road trips), negotiated which movie they’d be watching first (yes, another kiddy Godsend was that the TV operated while Marge was in motion) and we were off.

Rainbow Beach Holiday Village, roughly two Pixar animated kids’ movies from Brisbane, was our first stop. While Marge wasn’t going to break any

land speed records, she would prove her worth when we pulled up at our site. Hubby, who would become known as ‘The Mother Trucker’, swung big old Marge into place with ease. Within five minutes we had the side awning rolled out, the fold-out table and four chairs in place, power and water connected and the jug on. Now this was holidaying. Rainbow Beach Holiday Village offers the closest position to Rainbow Beach. Our site caught delightful seabreezes and stunning views of the ocean. We thought the beach and its famous coloured sand would be the major attraction of this stop but it was, in fact, the shaded caravan park pool. We spent many hours in that pool, chinwagging with other guests from all over Australia which I wreckon is the best part of any caravan park holiday – the camaraderie of the camping community. Rainbow Beach township has everything you need for a comfortable stay but we chose to give Marge’s kitchen a work out and she performed really well.

Next stop on our roadtrip was Elliott Heads Holiday Park, another two Pixar movies north of Rainbow Beach and just west of Bundaberg. Elliott Heads is a sleepy fishing village. The park was well placed on the corner of a patrolled surf beach and the calm river-mouth beach with a rocky stretch of shell-hunting heaven in between. We had to paper/scissors/rock each time we wanted to get wet as there were too many good swimming options here. Be prepared for your stay at Elliott Heads though, as there are no shops for groceries, but the kiosk has a small range of snack food and takeaway.

Agnes Waters Beach Caravan Park was another family-friendly spot on the coast, one Pixar movie and an episode of Postman Pat north of Elliott Heads. With Marge set up on Site 41 we could easily see the patrolled surf beach, just past the onsite licensed café, from our kitchen window. Agnes Waters and nearby 1770 are famous for their fishing spots but families will love this beach where the kids can learn to surf or explore the rock pools.

MARCH 2013 / 55

While there was always loads to do here and at each of our stops, Marge the Apollo Motorhome would time and time again prove to be an attraction in herself. Her spacious interior allowed all four of us to take air-conditioned time out without being on top of one another. While the girls got their art and craft on in the front dining area, us big kids lazed in her back-end lounge with some magazines. When it was kiddy movie time up front, we were far enough away from the noise on our bed at the back to enjoy a nap. When we were in the kitchen preparing food or if I needed the dining table for some laptop time, the girls retreated to their ‘upstairs’ cubbyhouse to play. This motorhome holiday thing was easy!

But, just as we had predicted, Mon Repos turtle rookery would prove to be the highlight stop of our trip. It is home to the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s east coast and is the most significant Loggerhead nesting site in the South Pacific. Queensland Parks and

Wildlife Service operate ‘Turtle Encounter’ tours, seven nights a week from November to late-March giving tourists a close encounter with these amazing reptiles. Nesting mother turtles appear on the beach from November to January and the hatchlings can be spotted from January to March. On our visit in late-January, we were lucky enough to witness both spectacles in the one night. The Little Misses squealed with delight as our guide’s torchlight revealed a bubbling mass of teeny tiny green-black turtles, each with a shell about the size of a 50-cent piece. Clambering from the sand in an awkward clumsy mess of flippers, they instinctively head towards the water. Our guide explained that only one in 1000 of these babies would survive long enough to lay her own clutch of eggs – a statistic that made us realise just how special those massive adult turtles are. They need to survive natural predators and human interference (whether that be our rubbish in the waterways or our boats’ propellers) for 30 years before their internal GPS

brings them right back to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Amazing, huh? Further along Mon Repos beach that night, we were lucky to witness life come full circle for one of those hatchlings. Our group waited in stillness and silence while the nesting mum emerged from the water, tracked directly for the sand dunes and settled herself down. Once she’d laid about 10 or so eggs, our guides said we were able to approach her and watch the rest of the amazing process up close. Positioned at the ‘southern’ end of the big mumma, only a metre from the torch-lit action, hubbie and I fielded some interesting questions about the anatomy of a female turtle from Miss 4 as we watched the slimy ping pong ball-like eggs slip out. Only minutes later, the mother turtle finished her job, covered up her eggs and headed back down to the water. In what was the best moment of the night, we were asked by our guides to help relocate her 129 eggs to higher ground. You see, turtle eggs are porous so nests below the high-tide mark need to be relocated or the eggs ‘drown’. Eyes wide and hands fixed in a bowl shape, Miss 6 clutched a freshly laid turtle egg, slowly and steadily carrying it up to the man-made nest in the sand dunes. Miss 6 made a wish for the baby inside the egg that night – that it would be that one in 1000 so we could keep coming back to Mon Repos to enjoy this amazing turtle encounter experience for many years to come. And the rest of us were with her on that. As long as we could bring Marge, for we had fallen in love with her – and the self-drive motorhome holiday lifestyle.

Waking up in the Grand Mecure, walking onto the balcony and feeling relaxed. That was defi nitely my favourite part of our recent family holiday. This property is a great holiday destination for families of all sizes. If you’re bringing your kids along on this fi ne holiday then make sure you take them for a dip in the lagoon. Kids can enjoy the large pool, canoes, sailing boats and most importantly – a water trampoline! I have to agree with my three siblings, the water trampoline was AWESOME! But that’s not all. There’s also a circus school and multiple restaurants. So next time you’re thinking of going on a family holiday, consider the Grand Mecure as you can relax, go extreme or just have plain old fun.

THE REUNION Joanne Fedler

It’s been ages since Jo, Helen, Ereka and CJ fi rst became friends through their mothers’ group. Back then, life revolved around their small children. Now their kids are pre-teens and teenagers with attitudes, iPods and raging hormones, and life is feeling emptier for some mothers, more liberating for others. While away together in an old country house with a couple of new friends and plenty of wine and food, it’s not long before the women are discussing men, marriage and parenting, sharing intimacies

and confi ding vulnerabilities. Friendships are put on the line as the bonds between them are tested and the weekend takes some unexpected turns.

Picking up where the international bestseller Secret Mothers’ Business left off, The Reunion is an insightful, funny and often biting novel about the challenges women face as their bodies change, dreams fade and kids grow up. Ultimately it explores what it means to be a good friend, a good person and a good mother – and suggests that all love is about learning to let go.
