The Prez Sez By Joe Fischer

The Prez is on vacation. The Prez Sez column will return in August.

Always wanted to say that, and this is as close as I will ever get. I will be spending a week in the north

woods but did have time to get this to Jill before the deadline.

I enjoyed seeing everyone at the Past Presidents Picnic. That was a beautiful day for a ride and picnic.

Past Presidents Beth Peterson, Gil Kruger, and Rich Temple were recognized. And Rich said, “a few

words.” Inspiring.

BTW, someone left a purple, padded cooler at the park which I now have in my possession. I will try to

remember to bring it to club functions and rides.

We have a couple of events coming up worth a reminder. The Tour de Cure is Saturday July 14. Julie

Franco is coordinating a BVBC hosted rest stop. Thank you to everyone that is volunteering. This is an

opportunity to get some exposure to cyclists that may not be aware of our club. Don’t forget to wear

your BVBC jerseys or t shirts!

By the time you are reading this you should have received your club gear from Hidden Bay graphics.

Although they have minimum order quantities that they publish, in our case they produced everything

we ordered even if total number fell well below the “minimum.”

Our July general membership meeting will be held at Estabrook Park beer garden. See Mikes article

below.

See you at the meeting!

And let’s have fun out there!

Joe

Past Presidents Rich, Beth, Gil Grill Masters Rich and President Joe

Perhaps Joe won’t have to cook when he is a “Past President”

Dumbbells for Seniors

By Dick Knepper

My name is Dick Knepper. I am the founder and past president of the Bay View Bicycle Club. I have developed an exercise program call “Dumbbells for Seniors”, but it is not just for seniors. It is a one hour exercise program using your own one to three pound weights. The program is designed to exercise muscles, improve balance and coordination, and to improve overall health. These exercises are intended to strengthen your body for safer and more enjoyable biking. We meet at the Bay View Community Center, 1320 E. Oklahoma in Bay View from 1:00 – 2:00 on Tuesdays and Fridays. The good news is that it is FREE. Just bring your own hand weights. For further information, call Dick Knepper at 414-232-4627

rest stop at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 14. The rest stop is located in Grant Park and can be accessed

from the entrance off Lake Drive. I am waiting for a map of the exact location and instructions regarding

where to park. As soon as I receive this information I will email it directly to those who have signed up

to work the rest stop. A HUGE thank you to for giving up a Saturday morning to help. It is a great cause

and a great way to raise awareness of our bike group. See you on the 14th!

Ride to Read Saturday August 11th

By Mike Dix

The Ride to Read is an easy, unique ride starting in Portage, only about 1 1/2 hours from Milwaukee. see www.kiwanisridetoread.com Several members of Bay View Bike Club and Nordic Ski Club participated in this ride last year. It's a flat, easy ride through Amish farm country north east of Portage. Even though it's not that far away, I had never really seen this part of the state before. The ride is run by the friendly people of the Portage Kiwanis Club. You will ride past lots of Amish farms and businesses with many horses and wagons. There will be a lot of great homemade food and only a few hundred riders. It was one of the nicest charity rides I've done in years. We plan to start riding at 8:30am. Ride distances are 15 to 62 miles. Cost is 25 or 30 dollars, no additional fundraising required. Register in advance or in person at the ride. Please register on your own. If you are interested in Car pooling, Contact me at [email protected] and I will try to facilitate it. No need to RSVP.

Bike Fed Group Riding Information

Please see the link below for the Bike Fed’s brochure on group riding safety. It is a great learning tool for new riders and a good refresher for seasoned riders. Let’s be safe out there!

Page 13: Pedal Power - WordPress.com · We now have two groups of riders: 9-12mph (or slower; the group will decide that day) no drop riding the shortest route 12-15mph drop riding different

Ride Coordinator Responsibilities

Being a ride coordinator is a great way to meet people and earn additional rider points. It’s easy!

Arrive at least 20-30 minutes early so that all riders have time to sign the sign-up/waiver sheet. Provide the route map and cue sheet to riders after they sign the waiver.

Before the Ride *Confirm that all riders have signed the waiver sheet. *Acknowledge new members and guests. *Ask riders which distance they will be riding including Scenic Riders group. *Relay route information updates and changes for road construction, detours, etc. *Mention rest stop opportunities. *Have riders do a quick “buddy check” to ensure that everyone is prepared for a safe ride: helmets on, packs zipped, quick releases secure, water bottles, etc. *Ask if anyone is interested in going out for lunch after the ride (with hand raise). *In case of an accident involving more serious injury or property damage, fill out the incident report that is enclosed in the packet with the cue sheets. This will allow a claim to be submitted to our insurer. Call 911 if needed. *Remind riders that we are obligated to follow the rules of the road. After the Ride (Things to provide to the Ride Chair Andy) *Return the waiver sheet and ride packet so that everyone can qualify for rider points and to satisfy our insurance requirements. *Note: Anyone can do the following *Include any items that were noted during the ride. *List any needed additions, clarifications or corrections to the cue sheet and map. *List any concerns regarding the route and any information which would improve the club experience the next time that the route is ridden. If, due to inclement weather or other route conditions, the Ride Coordinator deems it unsafe to ride as scheduled, he/she has sole authority to cancel the ride. In such cases, notify the Ride Chair Andy ([email protected] or text) of the cancellation as soon as you are able. If possible, post this information on the club Facebook page.
