WELCOME TO YOUR PRACTICUM or CAREER PREPARATION COURSE

Practicums and Career Preparation are instructional programs that align work experiences with school-based

instruction to promote critical thinking, foster social and psychological development, and enhance career and

workplace-related knowledge.

Authentic work-based learning has four essential characteristics:

1. Integrated, well-planned instruction that results in progressive student learning.

2. A school-based instructional component taught by a qualified instructor.

3. An authentic work experience for the student which may be paid or unpaid:

a. Practicum course can be paid or unpaid experience

b. Career Preparation can be paid or unpaid experience

4. School-based instruction linked to the work experience.

One of the primary purposes of these courses are to help students understand state and federal laws

governing work experiences for students. However, local policies also affect students and their work

experiences. Adhering to the guidelines (federal, state, and local) ensures the student gains a well-rounded

learning experience.

Please discuss any classwork assignments or concerns with the instructor. The instructor will assist students

in the work-based learning experience.

TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY AND PRACTICUM/CAREER PREPARATION COURSES

Practicum and Career Preparation are “full year” courses that combines classroom study with paid career-

related work. Texas school districts are required by law to provide instruction based on educational

standards called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Specific curriculum must be taught

throughout the entire school year in addition to the required work hours.

According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines,

Career Preparation and Practicums require that the local education agency and the training sponsor

plan and supervise instruction cooperatively. Students receive instruction by participating in

occupationally specific classroom instruction and training experiences.

The Career Preparation course is for paid experience only. The training component must address all

the TEKS for the course and provide a student with a variety of learning experiences that will give the

student the broadest possible understanding of the business or industry.

Each Career Preparation and paid Practicum course must consist of student participation in career

preparation training appropriate to the instructional program plus participation in related CTE

classroom instruction. Classroom instruction must average one class period each day for every school

week and span the entire school year.

A student must be a minimum age of 16 and hold valid work documentation to enroll in any of the

Practicum or Career Preparation learning experiences.

(Student Attendance Accounting Handbook).

Students must work 10 hours per week, on average for each 3-week period, to earn credit for the course.

This is a TEA requirement. Any hours missed due to absences or extenuating circumstances must be made up

by the last day of school. Work hours will be verified weekly and averages will be calculated every three

weeks. Grade reductions will occur if the 30-work hour requirement is not met.

ADVANTAGES OF PRACTICUM and CAREER PREPARATION COURSES

For the student, practicum and career preparation course will:

Provide a realistic learning setting to measure interests and abilities.

Develop an understanding of employment opportunities and responsibilities through direct work-based experiences.

Provide basic information regarding the importance of making informed life choices.

Develop work habits and attitudes necessary for individual maturity and job competence.

Provide opportunities to develop marketing skills

Give meaning and purpose to the theoretical assignments presented in the classroom.

Provide firsthand experience with other employees, which leads to better understanding of workplace collaboration and professionalism.

Provide financial rewards while acquiring employment skills

Provide an opportunity to participate in, and profit from, two types of learning environments: school-based and work-based.

Provide effective tests of aptitude for an interest in a chosen field of work.

NONNEGIOTABLE GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICUM and CAREER

PREPARATION COURSES

Part I - General Guidelines

1. Career Preparation and Practicum courses are intended to be full year enrollment.

2. Training stations must be approved by the instructor before the student accepts a paid employment offer or

an unpaid placement. 3. Students in Career Preparation and Practicum experiences are expected to secure a job on their own. The

instructor may assist students with their employment search, but students are responsible for researching, applying for, and securing employment.

4. Students are expected to comply with campus and district rules and practicum- career preparation

guidelines.

5. Training stations / places of employment are expected to adhere state and federal laws and ethical standards. Students are expected to perform job duties in accordance with state and federal law, district policies and procedures, and ethical standards.

6. Career Preparation and Practicum students may be removed from the course for failing to acquire employment within 10 days from the beginning of school.

Part II - Attendance Requirements

1. Employers can require students to work on school holidays.

2. Students must have reliable transportation, report to work on time, and be prepared to work.

3. Students are encouraged to work the number of hours requested by the employer.

4. When requesting time off from work, students must submit the request to his / her employer, in writing, at least two weeks in advance. A four week advanced notice / request is preferred.

Part III – Non-Responsibility of Pearland ISD

1. Pearland ISD Practicum/Career Preparation teachers should be aware that Pearland ISD is not responsible for

potential accidents or harm to and/or incurred by students at a training station.

Part IV – Required Work Hours

1. Practicum and Career Preparation students are required to work 10 hours per week on average.

2. Students are required to submit a “30 Hour Verification Sheet” three times per grading period, which will constitute as three separate major grades. Please refer to page 13.

3. Failure to work the required weekly hours will result in a grade reduction when hours are verified three separate times within the nine week grading period

4. Students should refer to page 12 for a rubric for the grading policy in relation to hours worked.

5. Hours worked during the summer, prior to the first day of school, cannot be utilized or substituted for meeting the 10-hour rule weekly rule during the school year.

Part – V Communication

1. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate an employment problem / concern or request for time off from work with the employer.

2. Students must communicate employment promotions, reward, layoffs, and firings to their Coordinator by the next day the class meets.

3. Students must maintain written and / or verbal confidentiality of the employer / training station.

Part VI – Teen Driving on the Job

1. Students should be aware of all driving restrictions posted by The Workforce Commission (TWC) and U.S. Department of Labor, Wagers and Hours before requesting permission for a specific training station location. Please refer to page 23.

Part VII – Texas Workforce Commission/U.S. Department of Labor – Child Labor Laws

1. Students should be aware of all rules and regulations of the Child Labor Laws posted by the Texas Workforce Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Part VIII - Employer Evaluations

1. The instructor is required to visit the student’s employer at least once for every grading period and discuss the student’s job performance. The employer will complete an evaluation concerning the student’s employment, and submit it to the instructor during the site visit. An employer evaluation is required each grading period for the students to receive credit for the class.

2. A test/project grade will derive from the employer’s written evaluation for each nine-week grading period.

3. If a student is terminated from employment for unsatisfactory job performance, the students test/project grade will be effected.

Part IX - 10 Day Employment Rule

1. A student must secure employment at an approved training station within the first 10 school days from the start of the semester.

2. Within the first 10 days of school, a student that is not actively employed is expected to: a. Actively seek employment each day b. Follow the guidelines given on the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet” c. Secure employment at an approved training station

3. Failure to secure employment within 10 days will result in removal from the course.

4. A daily grade will be taken, during the 10-day search for employment, from the weekly submission of the

“Employer Contact Verification Sheet.”

5. Confirmation sheets from on-line application submissions must be attached to the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet.”

Part X – Loss of Employment During the School Year

1. Career Preparation Students Becoming Unemployed – When a CP student becomes unemployed during the school year, the instructor must notify the CTE Specialist in charge of the WBL Programs via email with the following information: (1) reason for loss of employment, and (2) final date the student reported to the employment site. Additionally, as soon as the CP student regains employment, the CTE Specialist in charge of the WBL Programs must be notified via email of the effective date of the new employment. These dates are required to be monitored for TEA for funding purposes. Career Preparation students that lose employment during the school year will have 10 days to secure new employment. If new employment is not secured and verified by the instructor with 10 days the students will be required to stay and work on campus the entire school day until new employment is secured.

2. Practicum students that lose employment during the school must be switched to an unpaid practicum

experience with an unpaid training plan completed and submitted. When the student secures new employment, a new training plan must be completed and submitted. If the student is on an unpaid training plan and is not working in an unpaid capacity for an outside company they will be required to stay on campus the entire school day.

Part XI - 2018-2019 Verification/Receipt and Understanding of Pearland ISD’s Handbook

for Practicum/Career Preparation I & II Student Guidelines

1. All Practicum and Career Preparation students are required to sign an annual Verification-Receipt and Understanding of Students Guideline-Handbook for Practicum and Career Preparation. Refer to page 25 for the form. The signed forms must be submitted to the teacher of record for inclusion in the students’ class folder.

TRAINING STATION / PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES

1. Training stations must be approved by the instructor before the student accepts employment.

2. Contract labor, seasonal labor, door-to-door labor, or baby-sitting in a home, are not allowed/permitted in either Practicum or Career Preparation.

3. It is preferred for the training station to be located within ten (10) miles of the student’s high school.

4. Students are required to work an average of 10 hours per week. The student’s hours will be verified every three weeks on the “30 Hour Verification Sheet”. The 30 Hour Verification will constitute a major grade for the student every three weeks.

5. Training stations must meet the following requirements:

Operate from an office or place of business that is not a residence.

Have a supervisor on duty

Provide access to a phone

Have a registered business name and tax number

Provide compensation in compliance with state and federal employment laws

6. Training stations are not permitted at the following:

a personal residence

an establishment that infringes upon the PISD Code of Conduct. Example: Hooters, Twin Peaks, etc.

with immediate family members (parents and/or guardians, etc.)

7. Training stations must ensure a supervisor is on duty at all times while the student is present.

8. Students should be aware of all driving restrictions posted by The Workforce Commission (TWC) and

U.S. Department of Labor, Wagers and Hours before requesting permission for a specific training

station location. Please refer to page 23.

9. For Practicum courses the student-learner's training station/site must be one that falls within the occupational area (for practicum courses), and it must be related to the student-learner's previously identified career objective. The training sponsor must express a willingness to provide a variety of learning experiences within the student learner's capabilities.

10. The training supervisor is responsible for the student’s job performance, and to the greatest extent possible, the supervisor must ensure the student’s safety.

11. Within five days of approved employment, a student must complete and submit a Training Plan signed by the student, parent, and employer to the instructor. Failure to complete and submit a training plan will result in a grade reduction.

“EMPLOYER CONTACT VERIFICATION” SHEET GUIDELINES

Students seeking employment must apply for a minimum of four jobs per day.

Documentation of job applications / employer contact will be submitted bi-weekly on the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet,”

A bi-weekly grade will derive from submission of the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet.”

Students, who apply for jobs in person, will complete the first three columns. The potential employer or business representative will complete the last two columns.

EXAMPLE:

If the student applies for a job(s) on-line, confirmation sheets must be attached to the employer contact verification sheet.

Upon gaining employment, the student must submit the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet,” to earn the biweekly grade.

JOB CHANGE PROCEDURES

If a student desires to change jobs, the following procedures must be followed. Note the following:

Students must secure another job in an approved training station prior to resigning from current training station

Approval of the students Coordinator must be secured before a change can take place.

Students may not change jobs during the month of May. The teacher will initial and date each item as it is completed.

o _____ Attend the scheduled conference and provide justification for the job change.

o _____ Type a resignation letter at least two weeks in advance of submitting to the employer.

o _____ Submit a copy of the resignation letter to the instructor before giving it to the work supervisor.

TERMINATION/QUITTING JOB–CONSEQUENCES AND PROCEDURES

THE INSTRUCTOR MUST BE NOTIFIED WHENA STUDENT LEAVES HIS / HER TRAINING STATION FOR ANY REASON. NOTIFICATION MUST

TAKE PLACE NO LATER THAN THE NEXT SCHEDULED SCHOOL DAY.

Students are not allowed to change jobs during the month of May.

Instructor will contact the employer to review circumstances of termination / quitting.

Students terminated from jobs are expected to find their own employment within ten (10) school days.

While unemployed, the student must seek employment using the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet” and following the “Employer Contact Verification Sheet Guidelines.

If a student is terminated and / or quits without permission from the instructor, two times in a semester, the student will be released from the program at the end of the semester.

Students will document his / her termination / layoff / quitting and submit the documentation in writing to the teacher/coordinator by the next scheduled school day.

I understand that when the student is not employed in an approved training station, he / she is under the supervision of the co-op teacher/coordinator during the student’s work periods. This means the student is either filling out applications or is attending interviews, or working at an unpaid community service position. The student must report to the instructor’s classroom before he/she leaves campus each day.

Pearland ISD does not provide transportation to or from the training / work site My child must obtain transportation for the purpose of this class (going to work). PISD does not assume responsibility for, including but not limited to, injuries or accidents the

student may incur. I hereby release, PISD, its trustees, officers, employees, and agents from all liability and any

responsibility relating to my child’s transportation to and from the off campus work site. I agree to indemnify and hold harmless all said parties from claims hereafter made or asserted on

behalf of any person where such claims arise out of an accident, injury, or loss associated with the transportation.

If a problem occurs with my child’s training station, I am to contact and discuss the problem with the instructor.
