15-year-old Pearl, called Lila by her family, lives in São Paulo with her mother Aura, her younger brother and her grand parents. Her mother, a feng shui consultant, is generally thought to be a little weird, and Lila’s classmates also find her weird as well.

The story begins when Lila’s mother sends her to buy some things on her way home from school at a shop that sells Chinese artifacts. While waiting alone in this shop full of mysterious old things, she sees a dragon-bracelet with precious stones and cannot resist trying it on. But when she tries to take it off, the bracelet won’t come off her arm.

Mrs. Mei, the shop owner, asks Lila to work in her shop in the afternoons to pay for the precious item. Lila is not amused about getting stuck in that scary shop every day and being bossed around by Mrs. Mei’s son.

Then, strange things begin to happen: Every time Lila gets angry, the dragon’s eyes on the bracelet turn red like fire. One day when she’s particularly annoyed by her classmates, a fire breaks out in the library, and Lila begins to wonder whether she had any influence on that incident...

There is something else: Lila starts having dreams about an old Chinese temple, a woman with white hair and a mysterious young man named Hien. And little by little, Lila learns the story of a woman who mastered the dragons, during the Mogol Yin dynasty.

But the story has not come to an end yet, for there are strange beings trying to suck the life energy, the Chi, from people. And Lila starts to ask herself what role Mrs. Mei and her son Lucas have to play in this whole story.

The Lord of the Di Yu, an evil power, turns out to be responsible for the the strange things happening...

The Year of the DragonBook 1

The Year of the Dragon has passed, and the Year of the Serpent brings suspicion, jealousy, and challenges. Traveling in modern China, Hien dreams of the ancient country; he sees both real facts and mythical Chinese history. Lila and he meet inside those dreams, since the mental link between them was not broken. But he can only return to Brazil after fulfilling the mission given to him.

However, Hien does not know that the young man sent to be his guide in China was replaced by a mythical creature: the trickster spirit of the Monkey. This ruse was devised by the lord of the Di Yu, who plans to steal a precious Compass given to Lucas, and to tempt Hien to keep the dragon’s wealth for himself.

In São Paulo, Lila and Lucas become a couple. While Lucas is divided between wanting to stay and the desire to study in the United States, Lila discovers that she still possesses traces of the power of the Dragon.

Meanwhile, a mysterious Man in Black, Lila’s father, tries to reconnect with his family. And when it seemed impossible for things to get worse, Aura’s aunt, comes for an extended visit. She smelled the power of the Bottle of Shennong and wants the magic that belongs to her niece.

The Serpent of Light with its human face arises in everyone’s dreams and visions, marking the coming of the Year of the Snake. Lucas and Lila, in Brazil, and Hien, in China, will have to unravel what this means in order to address it – or ally themselves with the Serpent – to prevent the evil plans of their enemies.

When the Year of the Snake is over, the Year of the Horse begins bringing impulsivity and the yearning for freedom from all prisons, mental or real.

Hien returns to Brazil and Lila realizes how much he has changed. Lucas prepares to travel to the US but feels guilty, thinking of his duty to defend Lila and stay with his mother.

At this time, some Chinese vampires emerge in São Paulo, attacking the Eastern immigrants. They suck people’s chi and cause a mysterious illness. These creatures are meant to destroy the Council of the Ancients which caused the fall of the Lord of the Di Yu. One of their victims is Mrs. Mei, and her life is at risk.

Lilas mother discovers that a mythical being, the Heavenly Horse, may be the key to finding a cure. However, invoking it is a hard task: Lila and her friends will have to do it together.

After various failed attempts to summon this winged horse, Lila’s father shows up with a solution. To prove that he is worthy to return to the family after the period during which the gods kept him away, he gets help to lead the friends on their quest.

Guided by a divine power, the allies will have to unravel the puzzle of the eight trigrams, a cloudy riddle. Hien and Lila are growing closer, and Lucas is still jealous.

The Lord of the Di Yu gains strength. He goes in search of the Celestial Horse that can give him the free passage on Earth.

A key piece is highlighted in the plot: the Peach Xi of Wangmu, which confers immortality. Everyone desires it; but only Lila can decide how and when to use it. And she will face the hardest test of all, ever since she used the bracelet and acquired the Power of the Dragon ...
