A Wonderful Time at Rockin’ Rogers Days!   

Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their  me, donated their resources and showed Christ’s love to the com-munity during this fun event. We appreciate everyone who decorated the float, walked in the parade, cheered us on from the sidelines and worked in or patronized the food booth. This year, we sold pork chops on a s ck at the booth and ice cream cups along the parade route, with proceeds helping the ministries of Word of Peace. Thank you for another successful year at Rockin’ Rogers Days!

The Growing Season  Every day, at least twice a day, I drive by a corn field on my way to and from the church. All of a sudden one day, I no ced that the corn was really star ng to come up. It’s amazing how that corn has been growing there every day, seemingly unno ced, and now I can see it growing.  Faith and its growth are surely amazing as well. As Jesus said in one of our recent gospel readings, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would sca er seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.” (Mark 4:26-27) Seeds are sca ered and seemingly buried—Word and sacrament, prayers, tes mony, family tradi ons, church community tradi ons. But a er the appointed  me, faith and life burst forth.   You may have seen the recent findings of the Pew Research Center which says that since 2007, the number of Americans who iden fy themselves as Chris an has declined by 7.8%. But interes ng enough, that same study also found that there has been a 0% change in internet searches regarding religion during that same  me period. This suggests to me that there are hidden seeds of faith s ll wai ng to grow. We cannot lose hope in the seeds of faith planted in our children and grandchildren and those who have been through church school, confirma on, and so forth.   This fall Pastor Keith and I are looking forward to some exci ng new sermon series and small group opportuni es which will be announced later this summer. It is our hope that seeds of faith will con nue to be planted through these opportuni es and that faith and life con nues to burst forth.   Enjoy the growing season!

Word of Peace presents a produc on of the Broadway musical, Godspell, on Au-gust 20-23, under the direc on of Rogers High School Theatre Director, Hope Murray, and Minister of Worship & Music at Word of Peace, Michael Sahlen.   Godspell brings the gospel of Ma hew to life. Jesus gathers a group of followers and, through song and dance, teaches them some of the best-loved parables. The show becomes more serious towards the end of the second act, as Jesus is be-trayed by Judas and crucified. But don’t worry… there’s a happy ending!  Audi ons will take place at Word of Peace on Tuesday, July 7 at 6:30pm in the choir room. Actors must be of high school age or older and should prepare a song to sing and be ready to move. Rehearsals will be held on weekday evenings.  For more informa on, contact Michael Sahlen at 763-496-2412.

Are you looking for a way to have fun, meet new people, and give back to your community this summer? Please consider signing up for the Habitat For Humanity Summer 2015 Project!   Word of Peace will be sending volunteers to help build a home in Robbinsdale dur-

Mission Jamaica 2016 Come to an informa onal mee ng on July 13 or August 10 at 7:20pm and learn about join-ing the team from Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo on their mission trip to Jamaica on February 20-27, 2016. The team divides up to build a home, provide care at a special needs orphanage, and provide mobile medical clin-ics.   Ques ons? Contact Word of Peace member, Caren Nemec, at 612-865-5467 or visit  www.missionjamaica.org. 

CROSS Corner  Some of our neighbors and friends find it hard to just put a meal on the table or have a li le extra for snacks or fresh produce during the summer months, and many kids have just one meal a day. Please give what you can, when you can. Even $5, $10, or $20 can make a difference to someone in need.  As school supplies become available this month, please con-sider purchasing some extra supplies for a child in need. Cal-culators and backpacks are needed most, but ALL supplies are needed at this  me.   VOLUNTEERS are s ll needed to help out at the Rogers Farmers Market. Please call CROSS to volunteer or find out more.   GENERAL NEEDS: Oatmeal and other hot cereals; granulated, brown, and powdered sugar.

Bring Flat Jesus with You  This Summer!  

The Worship and Visual Arts Team is pu ng together a summer photo col-lage filled with pictures of Flat Jesus from around the world and we need your help. Here is how it works:  1.  Download Flat Jesus from 

wordofpeace.org/flat-Jesus or pick one up from the church office.   

2.  Color, cut out and make Flat Jesus waterproof.   

3.  Take Flat Jesus on vaca on with you this summer. Take pictures of Flat Jesus with your family and friends wherever you travel.   

4.  Share your pictures with WOPLC via Facebook, Twi er and Insta-gram (#woplc & #flatJesus), or you can email them to  dswanson@woplc.org.  

 Photos will be posted in the Gather-ing Area throughout the summer.

“God’s Work. Our Hands.” Service Weekend 

 This year, Word of Peace will par cipate in a “God’s Work. Our Hands.” service weekend on Saturday, September 12 through Monday, September 14. This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lu-theran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.    The idea for the “God’s Work. Our Hands.” service weekend is this: ELCA members are called to put their faith into ac on by engaging in service ac vi es in their neighborhood and surrounding community. We will be arranging a number of family-friendly and ability-friendly opportuni es to serve at the church and in our community over the course of the week-end. Some ac vi es include:   

Car wash 

Card-making for veterans 

Volunteering at CROSS Food Shelf 

Visi ng & singing at assisted living facili es 

Working on projects for surrounding ci es

 I enjoy reading quotes from wise people. They make me think about a big-ger picture. They make me think about more than myself. They make me forget, if only for a moment, my pe y problems and issues. Over and over I read that people who help others are happier than those who don’t. Helping others takes our minds off of our troubles (which we all have and always will have).   I receive some of my health care at the VA campus in Saint Cloud. If you ever want to forget your own troubles, go there and look around. It will only take a moment for you to see that there is always someone who has it worse than you do.   Helping others can come in many forms. Time, talent and money are three of the ways to lend a hand. Word of Peace has many ways to get involved and to make a difference: in your church, in your community, in someone else’s life. Visit wordofpeace.org/serve or stop by the Informa on Desk for current opportuni es.  God Bless, Al Lund and the Stewardship Team 

2016 Travel Opportuni es with  Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry   “Exploring Your Faith through Interfaith Dia‐log & Service: The Intersec ons of Chris anity with Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism in In‐dia” (February 2016) On this first-of-its-kind trip for LPGM  you will visit LPGM’s partners in the north of India (Church of North India) as well as the south (Arcot Lutheran Church). This trip is ideal for pastors, lay leaders, and others interested in exploring these world faiths in a Chris an se ng. On your three stops (Amritsar, Delhi, Tiruvannamali) you will have opportuni es to learn from church leaders, interact with others through service, and visit the central sites of these faiths. All of this will be framed in the context of understanding these tradi ons as a way to strengthen our own Chris an faith.    “Explore India – For Families” (July 2016) Mis-sion travel as a family teaches us about other cultures, and provides opportuni es to serve others in Christ’s name and forge las ng rela-onships as we explore our own faith and

Youth Ministry

There will be a Commissioning Service on Sunday, July 12 at 10am for the youth and adult leaders who will be a ending the Na onal Youth Gathering in Detroit. Come pray for us as we pre-pare for our trip!   MS: MSM.AM – July 5 at 10am in the Youth Room and outside. Come for food, devo ons and games. Friends are always wel-come!   MS/HS: Valleyfair—Wednesday, August 12. Cost is $35, includes admission and bus transporta on. All youth must provide a signed and completed Word of Peace Health & Registra on form (located on the wall outside the Youth Ministry Office). A sign-up sheet will be posted on the Youth bulle n board beginning Sunday, July 26.
