Adventures in Min istry !
What . . . adventures . . . will 2012 bring to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church?
I don’t know about you, but in some ways that is a scary question for me. Scary because it
reminds me that I am not in control of what will happen.
Oh, I can certainly influence events to some degree and make plans for what we want to take
place. That is an important part of leadership and stewardship, in the church and in our homes and
in business.
However, neither you nor I can completely foretell nor guarantee what the year ahead will
bring.
This is scary because some of my expectations of what will be are based on what has been, and
2011 was a year with many financial and economic difficulties, of war and natural disasters.
Based on that past, it is very easy to foresee only more doom and gloom for the future.
It is scary because so much of what I am involved in — and you, too, for that matter — is founded
on nothing that is really concrete, permanent, or certain, at least from human standards.
For example, with a great deal of prayer, reflection and hard work, Prince of Peace paid all of
our expenses for 2011, with two exceptions. Those exceptions were: 1) money we ―borrowed‖
from Special Funds, money designated for everything church organ repair to the Endowment
Fund; and 2) financial support we had committed to the work of the larger Church. As of this
writing, repayment of those ―debts‖ are not included in the 2012 Ministry Funding Plan.
Our 2012 Funding Plan (which the congregation will establish at our Congregational Meeting,
Sunday, January 22) is based largely on our income during 2011. We trust that our members will
be as committed in 2012 as we were in 2011. However, these figures remain the voluntary contri-
butions of our hundreds of members — any or all of whom may choose or
need to stop at any time.
I don’t doubt our commitment, but I also know that our economy
continues to struggle, and that finances are a challenge for all of us.
Occasionally I dream about having a guaranteed income, of being able to know
exactly what will end up ―on my desk‖ in the months to come (no surprises!),
and being able to ―lock in‖ each advance so the next one will be greater.
(Okay, so I’d probably be bored silly within weeks, but still . . . .)
This, I think, must be the largest part of faith in action: Remembering that
even the most stable things we can name (Governments? Continents? Constel-
lations, for that matter!) really only last for a brief period of time, relatively
speaking.
God, on the other hand, is the same yesterday (and a billion years ago), today, and tomorrow
(and a billion years from now), and it is God whom we serve and in whom we place our trust.
God calls us, equips and sends us, expecting us to trust that he will indeed provide all that we need
and more. Sometimes we are able in truth to declare, “Here I am, Lord. Use me as you will!”
More often, however, we want to put lots of qualifiers on that, “. . . as long as it doesn’t disrupt
my life too much!”
I am — and you are, too, for that matter! — in the palm of God’s hand. Whatever 2012 will bring,
we can trust that the God who loves us more deeply than we can possibly imagine — and who is
more powerful and in control than we ever fully recognize — will be leading us, guiding us, and
working through us.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is in God’s hands. We have an exciting and wonderful year
ahead of us!
Pastor Jon

Sunday School News from the Jerusalem Class
Our class began the season of Advent by making an Advent
wreath by decorating four small drinking cups, turning them upside down, inserting a candle
in each one, placing them in a circle on a plate and placing artificial greens around the can-
dles. It was very pretty. Each Sunday in Advent we took turns lighting the candles and put-
ting them out after the lesson.
The first Sunday in Advent we read from the book of Micah and learned about a new ruler
who would come from Bethlehem and be "the one of peace." The second Sunday we learned
about the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary telling her that God had chosen her to be the mother of
his son. The third Sunday we read about Mary's visit to Elizabeth and read the beautiful
words of praise and thanksgiving Mary offered up to God. We learned that these words have
been set to music ( The Magnificat) that we sometimes hear sung in churches.
On the fourth Sunday we had our version of a Mexican Posada. After Worship, all the Sun-
day School classes, including parents and friends from the congregation gathered in the sanc-
tuary - with some in costume - followed Mary and Joseph through the streets (hall) stopped
at three homes (rooms) looking for a place to stay for the night. At the first two homes we
were told to "go away - there's no room for you". At the third home we were allowed to enter
and celebrate. We sang Christmas songs, heard Pastor read the Christmas story from the gos-
pel of Luke and took turns hitting a pinata until it broke open spilling candy all over the
floor. When the scramble for candy was finished we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and ate
birthday cake. We had a very good time.

THE PSALMS ARE THE CHURCH’S HYMN BOOK AND PRAYER BOOK
Five Psalms for the Five Sundays in Lent — February 26, March 4, 11, 18, 25
In this adult course, led by Pastor Ronald Bagnall — after having sung the appro-
priate Psalm during our Lenten Sunday worship — at 10:45 a.m. we will have an opportunity to
study each of those Psalms from the Bible.
Feb. 26 — Ps. 25:1–10, ―To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul‖;
Mar. 4 — Ps. 22:23–31, ―You who fear the Lord, give praise‖;
Mar. 11 — Ps. 19, ―The heavens declare the glory of God‖;
Mar. 18 — Ps. 107:1–3, 17–22, ―Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good‖;
Mar. 25 — Ps. 51:1–12, ―Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love.‖
NEW GROUP BIBLE STUDY BEGINNING ON JANUARY 25TH
All are welcome to join Pastor Jon and others in a study of the ―Book of Ephesians‖
beginning on Wednesday night, January 25th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. The cost of the
student workbook is $5.50. The class will meet weekly until the beginning of Lent
and then resume the study after the Lenten Season. For more information please
speak to Pastor Jon or Bev Savage.
Highlights of January 9, 2012 Council Meeting
Council spent a considerable amount of time discussing church finances and the budget which will be
presented to the congregation on January 22. We finished 2011 $10,344 in the red, but all bills have been
paid except for the New England Synod benevolence ($5,715 in arrears) and the $4,000 loan from the Spe-
cial Fund account.
The Giving Wall has raised an additional $2,859 (for a total of $5,058). Council voted to send all but
$1,000 of it to the New England Synod to go toward our benevolence to the greater church. We will write-
off the balance owed to the New England Synod benevolence. We will also pay back $1,000 of the $4,000
loan from the Special Fund.
Council voted to put the money that is in the Christmas Dinner account ($1,875) into the Helping Fund
which has less than $300 in it. The money will go toward helping those in need.
Council accepted, with regret, the resignation of Dee Benn as chair of the Social Awareness Committee.
Financial Secretary Bobbi-Jo Burdin presented several budget proposals and after much discussion
prayer, Council approved a budget which includes no salary increases and no layoffs of sexton or
maintenance positions.
