    WELCOME

W elcome to the 14th Annual Biamp PDX Jazz Festival. Some folks have wondered why we dropped “Portland” from our title last year, but many have also recognized our year-round commitment and expansion for presenting jazz all across the Rose City under our organization name PDX Jazz (and no one will dispute that PDX is the best airport in America—even with the new carpeting).

Our tireless pursuit in offering our Citizens of Jazzlandia the finest examples of emerging, established and legacy artists continued unabated this past Fall with eleven shows: Raul Midón, Kamasi Washington, Camila Meza, Bill Frisell, McCoy Tyner, Steve Lehman, and Dave Douglas, among others. We have many great shows planned for the coming season including Dave Holland, Donny McCaslin, Gerald Clayton, Billy Childs, Anat Cohen, Eliane Elias, Manuel Valera, Marquis Hill and Blacktet, Ambrose Akinmusire, and major surprises to be announced soon.

The venues with whom we partner are integral in making sure we can keep bringing this high level of artistry for Portlanders to admire and discover. In our seventh year producing shows on a twelve-month calendar, PDX Jazz has built alliances and partnerships in various neighborhoods with P5, The Mission Theater, Classic Pianos, Mississippi Studios, Revolution Hall, The Aladdin Theater, Soul’D Out Music Productions, PSU, The Old Church, Lewis & Clark, The Alberta Abbey, and our many hotel and restaurant partners who have welcomed PDX Jazz into their collective spaces.

None however has been more enduring and gratifying than Jimmy Mak’s. I am fighting back tears as I reflect on Jimmy’s recent passing, and the beautiful times we shared on over 75 occasions with JD and Lisa since we first presented Charles McPherson on the 2012 Festival. When I transitioned to Artistic Director in June 2011, Jimmy was the first person I called, and he advised us to organically blend local musicians who work here year-round into the Festival. This served as a grounding experience that I still uphold and adhere to throughout the year.

Our jazz community is caring, supportive and passionate towards our artists and we pulled on the rope to reconfigure and reimagine our schedule in light of the club’s closing. We hope that you will come out and support an important step in the post-Jimmy Mak’s era with the recent opening of the Fremont Theater. We’re excited to begin partnering with them and will kick off this new relationship with three Festival performances: Aaron Parks Trio, Alan Jones and the Buddy Rich Drum Battle, and the Descarga for Monk & Diz program featuring Alex Conde and John Santos.

We are thrilled that the Mission Theater is back in action now, renewed and once again on a year-round schedule with the Bridgetown Sextet show being our first there since April 2014. Our partnership with McMenamins goes back long before my tenure with headline shows at the Crystal Ballroom. Last year we began a one-week residency celebrating Coltrane at Al’s Den, and this will now become an annual Festival tradition, with Dizzy Gillespie receiving the honor this year. Lola’s Room will host our Monday night big band salute with Ezra Weiss, who will recall the famed NYC residencies by the Mingus Big Band, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, and Maria Schneider.

The White Eagle Saloon has also joined the Festival family as host for a new series, Not Exactly Jazz; and we’ll keep the Jazz Jam Session nomadic, checking in this year at the new Northside buzz spot, the 1905.

Our programming expansion on the east side gained momentum last Festival with two shows at Revolution Hall, and this year we’ll host five

not to be missed programs. Among them is the long anticipated debut of the Mel Brown Big Band. Our Portland Jazz Master, who attended Washington High School, has always featured Dizzy’s music among his various bands. He’ll have the opportunity to welcome Gillespie’s living embodiment, Jon Faddis, as special guest soloist. Brown will also reassemble his original septet in tribute to his dear friend Jimmy Makarounis, appropriately billed The Jimmy Mak All Stars.

There will be so much to see and savor during these 11 days—get out and smell the roses, taste a bracing mico-brew, caffeinate leisurely, visit a food cart; we have record stores, pool halls and bowling alleys, and of course Powell’s. It’s Jazzlandia for all to enjoy as we celebrate Black History Month and America’s indigenous art form in the Pacific Northwest.

    WHAT’S HAPPENING AT PDX JAZZ

W e are living in a remarkable era for jazz in Portland, and PDX Jazz is proud of our contributions toward making this important and dynamic music a major part of Portland’s performing arts landscape. This past year, local and internationally renowned jazz artists have graced stages all over town, from Revolution Hall, the Alberta Abbey and the Aladdin Theater on the east side, to the west side venues of the P5, the Old Church, and, of course, the much celebrated Jimmy Maks. The ongoing presentation of live performance is exciting and essential to our mission, as is the expansion of our education programs.

The PDX Jazz Board of Directors is made up of a diverse community of business leaders, educators, marketers and communicators – all of whom have become important activists and visionaries for jazz music – and have played a major role over the years in building PDX Jazz into a successful presenting arts organization. In collaboration with our spon-sors, staff, donors, members and volunteers, the board made broadening our education outreach programs and developing partnerships for them a focus of our efforts this past year. • The “Incredible Journey of Jazz” – our longest running education

program, and steered by our Education Chair Marcia Hocker – continues to be performed in Portland Public School auditoriums, but this year, in partnership with P5, was presented at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on January 17 to thousands of students from Title 1 schools.

    • With the generous support of our sponsors US Bank and OPB, our “Jazz in the Schools” program, in only its second full year, was taught in ten schools and to over 1,000 students of all ages, and will culminate this April with an exhibition of exceptional student art at the Portland Art Museum.

    • Our new adult education program “Discover Jazz” – led by board member (and Reed College Professor of Humanities) Pancho Savery – has found an impressive, enthusiastic audience, as well as a partner in Literary Arts, who hosts our events in their downtown offices.

    • Generous donations from Roberto Lovato and Laura Golino de Lo-vato have allowed for the creation of the “Bright Moments Fund,” which provides under-privileged youth the experience of witnessing select PDX Jazz events.

The entire organization is very proud of this work because it serves to introduce the historic cultural impact of the music while creating the potential for a new audience for it. More information about our educational outreach can be found in the Question and Answer section within this program.

Having led the board during this era of PDX Jazz has been incredibly rewarding. Thanks to the vision of the board and staff, and with the continuing support of our sponsors (particularly Biamp Systems), mem-bers, and volunteers, we are now in a great position to continue present-ing live jazz music and expanding our educational outreach well into the future. In Portland, we can proudly say that jazz indeed “lives!”

    EDUCATION NARRATIVE

Marcia: The IJOJ presentation with P’5 in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is the most significant development since the program’s inception. Are there challenges in performing to such a large number when school auditori-ums, gymnasiums and music rooms have been the primary venue?Darrell: We are excited by the opportunity to present IJOJ in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The challenge of performing in a large auditorium is keeping a sense of connection between what is happening on stage and the children in the audience. Our goal is to main-tain the sense of excitement and discovery that students experience when they see this show at their own school.

Marcia: What is the most important benefit from the IJOJ, and does it make a difference for them to experience jazz live?Darrell: The most important benefit of IJOJ is the opportunity to experience this art form live. Live music is transformative and emotion-ally powerful.

In 2015, PDX Jazz created an outreach program called “Jazz in the Schools” that teaches students about the music, history and art of jazz. The students listen to jazz music over an extended period of time and then cre-ate their own artistic interpretation of what the music “looks like” to them. Their art is then pub-lished on the PDX Jazz website, and exceptional art is exhibited in an event space in downtown Portland in February, and again in late April at the Portland Art Museum. During the 2016/17 school year, Jazz in the Schools was presented in 10 schools and to 1,450 students. US Bank provides funding for the art supplies necessary

The Incredible Journey of Jazz (IJOJ) was the organization’s first education outreach initiative, which began in February 2004. As a celebration of Black History Month, the IJOJ served middle school classrooms and auditorium assemblies in the Portland metro area, and over the past dozen years has expanded into surrounding counties and alternative venues.

Marcia Hocker, PDX Jazz Board Education Chair, spoke with the program’s co-creator, Darrell Grant.

Marcia: What is “incredible” about the In-credible Journey of Jazz?Darrell: What is incredible about the Journey of Jazz is that the music has made its way around the world. In just more than 100 years, jazz music has influenced world culture in many pro-found ways. Also incredible to me is the way jazz embraces so many musical styles and welcomes people from diverse cultures.

Marcia: Initially IJOJ was geared for middle school students but has recently included elementary and high school. How is the ex-panded audience receiving it?Darrell: We initially thought that the music and information presented in IJOJ would be best understood by middle school-age students. We have been pleased to discover, however, that younger audiences can easily enjoy the story we tell about the music’s journey, while older students are stimulated by the cultural history presented in the program and the music’s impact on their lives. The infectiousness of the music and the energetic performances communicate to all ages.

    EDUCATION NARRATIVE

for the project, and Oregon Public Broadcasting is supporting our efforts to expand this program by publicizing it on its various media platforms.

Matt Fleeger, program director of OPB’s KMHD Jazz Radio, talks with PDX Jazz Board President Joe Maita about this initiative.

Matt: Why did PDX Jazz start the Jazz in the Schools program?Joe: A priority of PDX Jazz’s mission is to pro-vide educational outreach opportunities to Port-land area students. Jazz in the Schools serves that mission because it communicates the music’s essence and cultural significance while contributing to the growth of a new audience. We believe students who learn something about jazz music will appreciate it as an important original American art form, will learn much about American history – particularly African American History – will discover its connection to art via classic jazz record album art, and in the pro-cess will find inspiration for creating their own original art. Ultimately, the program creates re-lationships and builds connections between the students, the greater Portland jazz and business community, and PDX Jazz. The art also serves as a way for PDX Jazz to communicate to the city about our organization and events.

Matt: How is the program implemented?Joe: We present a 45-minute overview of jazz through an interactive presentation that in-cludes music, film and record album cover art. Students learn about the roots of jazz music in New Orleans, its key figures, its importance as a popular American music during a challenging time in our country, its contributions to the civil rights movement, and its connections to the world of art. During ensuing class time, students listen to jazz music while creating their record album cover art.

Matt: What are your goals for the future with Jazz in the Schools?Joe: Our plan is to make this an annual presen-

tation to dozens of schools all over the state, and with OPB’s help and the support of sponsors like US Bank, this is a real possibility. An ambition is for every student in Portland to have an op-portunity to participate in this program at least once before going off to college. The ultimate vision is to have students’ art showcased all over town during our PDX Jazz Festival, which annu-ally takes place in February, which is also Black History Month. If we can do this for jazz in our city, who’s to say it can’t be replicated elsewhere?

Matt: If you met a student that had partici-pated in the program 20 years from now, what would you hope to hear from them about their time in the program?Joe: One of my great personal joys is knowing that when I leave the class, every one of those students has heard about Louis Armstrong. My hope is that in 20 years they would thank me for introducing him, and that the program was a doorway to discovering an appreciation for jazz music. I would also hope to hear that the pro-gram gave them a unique opportunity to express their creativity while improving their under-standing about the complexity of American life.

Don Lucoff, Executive Artistic Director, caught up with Roberto Lovato and Laura Golino de Lovato, who conceived the Bright Moments Fund to celebrate the legacy of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

This grass roots initiative directly con-nects and subsidizes underserved com-munities with the opportunities to expe-rience PDX Jazz performances that are financially challenging.

Don: Can you describe the first time you saw Rahsaan Roland Kirk and what kind of impact he made on you?Roberto: I believe the first time I saw Rah-saan was in June 1973 at Keystone Korner in San Francisco. I thought to myself, “Oh man, there’s this guy who looks strange because he’s got all

these horns and stuff hanging around his neck and was being led in from backstage.” He was wearing sunglasses like Ray Charles so I thought he was just a cool dude. There was an energy that he created that made you feel you were right there with him in the music, going with him on whatever journey he’s was off to. Rahsaan was not just a musician, he was an historian, a poet and a communicator. Hearing was his sight, and sound and music were his world.

Don: Why do you think Rahsaan is such a timeless musician and his message is more resonant than ever?Roberto: Because the music Rahsaan created was a vibrant and energetic expression that had its own character. And the fact that Rahsaan was involved in Black Classical Music and served as a mentor and promoted it as heritage music. It should not be lost as an important musical lega-cy for everyone, but mainly for the African-Amer-ican youth of today. And what other musician carries a tape recorder around his neck? Rahsaan would push the play button and music—like that of Fats Waller—would come out of it. Rahsaan would then launch into a mini speech about that musician. Rahsaan wasn’t shy about speaking his mind to the audience. He’d blurt out some politically or socially oriented comment perti-nent to the times.

Don: Did you ever have the opportunity to meet Rahsaan? If so tell us about that experience?Roberto: I never did meet Rahsaan face to face. But I felt close because going to a Rah-saan show was a real art and musical happening. At Keystone Korner in San Francisco, Rahsaan would leave the stage—assisted—and go into the audience while continuing to play, and then he’d go out the door and go outside and play for the people in the street. That was totally unex-pected! It was a very exclusive thing; no other musician would do that. I regret the fact that I never tried to meet him face to face.

After he had the stroke in ’75, I sent him a get well card saying, “Please don’t leave us! The

world needs you.” And Dorthaan, Rahsaan’s wife, sent me a card back and a Bright Moments pin.

Don: What is most important to you and Lau-ra regarding this initiative? Roberto: The fact that we’re able to facilitate getting young people of color to be able to hear first-rate music that PDX Jazz presents without them having to worry about the financial part of it is a gift to us. I know what it’s like to have those economic barriers and be a person of color. In the many years we’ve been attending the event, we’ve not seen many young people of color. And this is their heritage—their cultural heritage—the music. We’re trying to “level the playing field” as they say in regard to the inequities that low-income youth face in Portland, Oregon.

Laura: Plus, this is a legacy for Roberto, a way for him to share his love of music and the oppor-tunity for kids to get what could be a life-saving exposure to music. And I get to come along on the journey!
