Here’s some recent health news that shouldgrab your attention: a great little study has shownthat health risks attributed to “environmentaldamage” in an individual can be passed along for several generations. In other words, if, for example, your grandma
was exposed to an environmental toxin that some-how damaged her DNA (well, hey, she was a bit ofan odd bird, wasn’t she?), then this study claimsthat she may have passed that damaged DNA onto you, or even, here’s the really scary bit, to your kids and perhaps even to their kids.“Yah,” you say, “I did see that report on the
news, Art, because I make sure to watch your Health Headlines every day”.“You are one smart dude, “I answer.“But,” you continue while ignoring my inter-
ruption, “that study was done on mice, so I did-n’t worry about it much because no man is a mouse, right?”“Not quite because what happens in mice can
sometimes happen in humans.”“But there’s also this”, you say, “my grandma
may have been a bit weird but she was also apretty smart lady (after all, she allowed grandpato think he was the boss even though she ran theshow entirely, and he died without ever catchingon) and because she lived in a simpler world, sheprobably didn’t get exposed to too many environ-mental toxins.”
“True enough,” I say, “but let me ask you this. Was she fat?”“All grandmas are fat.”“Well, that’s a problem, you see, because the
same study (and others) indicates that some meta-bolic changes from inappropriate lifestyle – yes, like from becoming too fat, or from smoking – canproduce DNA damage that can alsobe passed on for several generations.”“OMG And yikes”But before you all freak out because you remem-
ber that both your grandparents were heavysmokers, they both ate tons of saturated fats, (re-member when bacon and fried eggs was thehealthiest breakfast you could eat, except in Jew-ish families like mine, where we substituted thatinstant artery-clogger known as rendered chickenfat for bacon), they were both overweight andthey certainly never did any active exercise (theword “exercise” was invented in the 1980’s bysome new-agers in California),here’s the counter-balancing good news. We now have a ton of evidence that you can
largely mitigate many of your negative genetictendencies by following a healthy lifestyle. For example, in people who are at high risk of
ending up with high blood pressure becauseboth their parents had high blood pressure, a re-cent study found that doing enough aerobic ex-ercise can significantly offset that risk.

Hypertension (elevated blood pressure) is one ofthe “silent killer” diseases. People may not be awarethat they have hypertension because this conditionmight not produce noticeable symptoms. If hyperten-sion is left untreated, it can cause significant problemswith your heart, arteries and entire cardiovascular sys-tem. But statistics do not lie – well, not often. Every 7minutes someone in Canada dies from heart diseaseor stroke. It is thought that heart disease costs theCanadian economy 20.9 billion dollars every year. This amount is almost as big as the GDP of the nationof Paraguay. You should have your blood pressurechecked regularly. Many Peoples Drug Mart storeshave a self-serve blood pressure machine that you canuse free of charge.
Blood pressure readings are expressed as a ratio ofyour systolic over diastolic pressures. Let's compareyour cardiovascular system to a garden hose; they aremore similar than you might think. When your heartcontracts it forces blood into your arteries, or whenyou quickly turn on the faucet water rushes into thehose, causing the pressure to rise. This systolic pres-sure will normally range from 150-120 mmHg. Whenyou turn off the water supply, or your heart relaxes, the pressure will drop. This diastolic pressure will nor-mally range from 95-80 mmHg. These two readingswill provide you with your blood pressure, which isideally 12080 mmHg. According to the CanadianHypertension Society, a blood pressure reading of14090 mmHg indicates blood pressure that is toohigh. If you have diabetes or kidney disease, your blood pressure should be under 13080 mmHg.
What causes high blood pressure? There are many
things that can raise your blood pressure: stress, smok-ing, obesity, diet and other factors. Sometimes highblood pressure can be caused by kidney disease orother disorders. If you find that your blood pressure ishigh, check with your doctor. The two of you can de-termine what is causing your high blood pressure.Once you know what is causing it, you can determinethe best form of treatment.
People often ask me what natural options are avail-able to lower blood pressure? What supplements canI take? I rarely recommend a supplement to helplower blood pressure. Perhaps the best thing one cando is to exercise regularly. It can help to lower bloodpressure in several ways. Regular exercise can help youlose weight and being overweight is known to elevateblood pressure. Even losing 5kg (10lbs) can have asignificant impact on lowering your blood pressure. So what is considered regular exercise? It should bebetween 30-60 minutes, 4-7 days a week. This exer-cise should be vigorous enough to raise your heartrate and cause you to breathe heavier, but not somuch that you are unable to have a conversation. Re-member to speak with your doctor before beginningany new exercise program.
Diet can also affect your blood pressure. Processedfoods, foods high in sodium (salt), sugary snacks, caf-feine, animal products, fatty foods and excessive al-cohol intake (more that 2 per day) have all beenassociated with raising blood pressure. While fruits, vegetables, high-fibre, low-fat foods and fish havebeen shown to lower blood pressure. Drinking greentea has also been shown to reduce one’s risk of devel-oping high blood pressure. This doesn’t mean that

you need to avoid the foods you love completely; youshould just save them for special occasions. The Cana-dian food guide has some excellent recommendationsto help improve your diet. I don’t usually recommenddiets promoted by nutrition or fitness 5gurus,’ becausetheir books are expensive and may be complicated. Ido recommend one called the DASH diet. In one study, people who followed this diet were able to significantlylower their blood pressure. A copy of this diet can befound free on the Internet athttp:www.nhlbi.nih.govhealthpublichearthbpdash. Remember to consult your Doctor or Nutritionistbefore making any major changes to your diet.
A recent study demonstrated that eating pistachioscan help lower blood pressure. People who ate around11P2 ounces of pistachios a day experienced a 4.8 mmHgdrop in blood pressure. Oddly, it did not matter if thepistachios were salted or not. Don't take this informa-tion as validation for eating poorly, then munching ona few pistachios to protect your heart. The people inthis study were provided with a diet rich in fruit, veg-etables, lean meats and whole grains. But it does
demonstrate that incorporating healthy food optionsinto one's diet can help lower blood pressure.
While on the topic of diet, salt intake is a significantrisk factor for developing high blood pressure. Sadly, added salt is everywhere in our diet. You can safely as-sume any food in a can, box or restaurant has addedsalt. So read those labels carefully. People with hyper-tension should consume less than 1,500mg (1 tsp) ofsalt per day. Even a can of soup broth can have as muchas 650mg of salt. Be sure to take the salt shaker off thetable; the days of adding salt to your meal before yourfirst bite are over. Be wary of bread, it can also be a hidden source of salt.
If diet and exercise are unable to lower blood pres-sure, there are some supplements that can help. Coen-zyme ,10 (Co,10) is a supplement that has beenshown to be helpful to reduce blood pressure. Onesmall study demonstrated that men who took 120mgof Co,10 had lowered their blood pressure by 9 aftereight weeks of therapy. There have been no known sideeffects seen with Co,10 use. However, this supplementcan lower blood glucose levels, so people with diabetes

Rates of esophageal cancer have surged due to a lack ofawareness about what causes the disease and how it can beprevented, experts say.
The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food andliquid from the mouth to the stomach. There were six timesas many cases of esophageal cancer in 2001 as there were in1975, according to a recent study. The researchers noted thatone key way people can reduce their risk for the disease is bymanaging heartburn and acid reflux, often called gastroe-sophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
If left untreated, GERD can cause stomach acid to wash re-peatedly into the esophagus, causing changes in the tissuelining. This condition is called Barrett's esophagus, and peo-ple diagnosed with Barrett's may be up to 40 times morelikely to develop esophageal cancer, the experts explained.Complicating matters, people with esophageal cancer maynot experience any symptoms other than heartburn, whichcould prevent early detection of the disease.
Tips on acid reflux or heartburn and how to reduce therisks associated with these conditions:• Anyone experiencing heartburn more than once a weekshould visit their doctor to manage the condition.• Lose weight. Being overweight can make acid reflux and
heartburn worse.• Avoid eating too much at one time, and keep upright aftereating. Reclining with a full stomach can make symptomsworse.• Engage in light physical activity after eating; exercise canhelp digestion.• Anyone who takes medications for acid reflux -- such asPrilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, Zantac or Pepcid -- should taketheir medication regularly to reduce the level of acid in theirstomach.• Get screened for esophageal cancer. White men aged 50 orolder who have been affected by acid reflux for more than 10to 15 years should consider being screened for Barrett'sesophagus. If caught early, the changes in the esophagus lin-ing can be treated.• Don't smoke.• Avoid caffeine, alcohol and fatty foods, which can increasethe risk for acid reflux.• People taking certain heart and blood-pressure drugs, suchas calcium channel blockers and nitrates, may be at greaterrisk for acid reflux. These patients should discuss their risk fac-tors and treatment options with their doctor.

Medication CompoundingMedication compounding is the process of
preparing personalized medications for patients.Compounded medications are custom preparedfrom individual ingredients which are mixed to-gether in the exact strength and dosage form as re-quired by the patient. This method allows thecompounding pharmacist to work with the patientand the prescriber to customize a medication tomeet the patient’s specific needs.
There are several reasons why prescribers andpharmacists provide compounded medications forpatients. The primary reason for compounding is toavoid patient non-compliance, which means thepatient is either unable or unwilling to use the med-ication as directed. Many patients are allergic topreservatives or dyes, or require a dosage that is dif-ferent from the standard drug strengths.
With a physician’s consent, a compoundingpharmacist can:• Adjust the strength of a medication.
• Avoid unwanted ingredients, suchas dyes, preservatives, lactose, or gluten.• Add flavor to make the medication morepalatable.• Prepare medications using unique delivery sys-tems. For patients who find it difficult to swallow acapsule, a compounding pharmacist may preparethe drug as a flavored liquid suspension instead.
Other medication forms include topical gels orcreams that can be absorbed through the skin, sup-positories, sublingual troches, or even lollipops.
Compounding pharmacists can also help pa-tients who experience chronic pain. For example, some arthritic patients cannot take certain medica-tions due to gastrointestinal side effects. Side effectsassociated with oral administration can often beavoided when medications are used topically.
Talk to a Peoples Pharmacist about medicationcompounding and how it can help your specifichealth needs.

should use this supplement with caution.Co,10 can also interact with warfarin, a pre-scription blood-thinner. If you have any ques-tions about Co,10 ask your PeoplesPharmacist.
Even my favorite supplement, vitamin C,has been shown to be helpful for treatinghigh blood pressure. One thirty day study ofthirty-nine individuals, taking medications forhypertension, who received 500 mg of vita-min C daily showed a reduction of theirblood pressure by about 10.
Drinking hibiscus tea can also help to lower bloodpressure. In one small study, subjects with mild hyper-tension drank a cup of hibiscus tea three times a day. After six weeks, their blood pressure dropped signifi-cantly compared to those subjects who did not drinkthe tea. In fact, these reductions in blood pressure weresimilar to those experienced by people who adoptedthe DASH diet.
There is some evidence that the minerals magne-sium, calcium and potassium may be associated with
high blood pressure. These three minerals worktogether to help regulate blood pressure in thebody. Some studies have shown that peoplewho have high blood pressure may be deficientin these minerals. Perhaps this is why takingthese minerals, and thus correcting this nutri-ent deficiency, can help reduce blood pressure.Ask your Peoples Pharmacist if these supple-ments would be right for you.If you have, or think you might have, highblood pressure, visit you doctor regularly. Youcan even have your blood pressure checked
regularly at your local Peoples Drug Mart. Your Peo-ples Pharmacist can also be a wealth of informationabout how you can lower your blood pressure. Learnabout your health and find ways to help improve it.Watching your diet, getting regular exercise and avoid-ing salty foods can help to lower blood pressure. “That’s great news for my kids,” you say, “Orperhaps they’ll see it as bad news because I’mgoing to make them do lots more exercise now.But this news doesn’t affect me because I’m tooold to offset any risks my grandparents and par-ents may have passed on to me.”So here’s the really good news for you, dude, or
perhaps you’ll see it as bad news: you’re never tooold to start making healthy lifestyle changes. Rather, no matter how old you are, no matterwhat shape you’re in, no matter how manychronic health problems you may already have, ifyou change your unhealthy ways for healthierones, you improve your odds of living longer inbetter health. And if I had to pick a single stage of life during
which I would say you get the biggest bang foryour buck by adopting a healthier lifestyle, I’d pickmidlife, which I define as that period between be-coming independent of your parents and inde-pendent of your kids, roughly from 30-60.For example, a study that followed over two
thousand Swedish men from the time they turned50 till their early 80’s found that those men whowere able to change their sedentary lifestyle bystarting to exercise in middle age significantly im-proved their risk of living to age 82 in good health. In fact, within less than a decade, those men
who had changed their couch potato lives into be-coming more fit had the same life expectancy asmen who’d been exercising since youngadulthood.Another study that followed over 8000 Ameri-
can men of Japanese descent for about 40 yearsfound that men who took care of themselves atmidlife – the usual stuff of not smoking, eating ahealthy diet, doing some exercise, etc, – had anexcellent chance of living to age 85 in goodhealth. On the other hand, if you don’t take care of
yourself in midlife, better make sure for the sakeof your inheritors that your life insurance policy ispaid up. Thus, a study that looked at nearly twentythousand men determined that midlifers who hit

what you may call “the bad lifestyle trifecta” –they smoked and had high blood pressure andhigh cholesterol levels - were likely to die 10 yearsearlier on average than men who had none ofthose risks. And if the folks with those 3 healthrisks were also overweight, their life expectancyplunged by 15 years compared to their peers withnone of those risk factors. The bottom line is pretty simple: based on cur-
rent life expectancy tables, people who followhealthy lifestyle practices in midlife have an excel-lent chance of living well into their 80’s, but peo-ple who don’t are much more likely to diein their early seventies or even sooner. Now, I know, sadly, that many of you reading
this will smirk that you really don’t care to live intoyour 80’s (who wants to end up likegrandma, eh?)But that kind of attitude, I suggest, is really just
an indication of the arrogance and stupidity of theyoung because the one thing I can assure you, children, is that the older you get, that is, thecloser you get to age 85, the more you’re goingto do everything in your power to reach that mile-stone. You will one day care a lot about living intoyour 80’s, believe me, but only if you make it outof your seventies. And finally, let me close with this happy note:
the message that living right in midlife is impor-tant seems to be getting through to a lot morepeople because a recent study found that peopleover the age of 55 are doing significantlymore exercise than people aged 18-25.In other words, most midlifers have realized that
despite what they once thought, they do indeedwant to live long enough to see their grandkidsget married and to see the Canucks finally win theStanley Cup (although sadly, for most people, theformer wish is much more likely to come true thanthat latter one).

As an advocate for preventative health, I believe that mak-ing better food choices can greatly enhance our longevity andquality of life. This is not just new age thinking. Back in thedays when the year had only three digits, a Greek physician bythe name of Hippocrates coined the term “you are what youeat.” With this philosophy, he was linking the quality of ourdiet to the state of our overall health.
Back in Hippocrates’ day, many good citizens were at-tributing disease to punishment by the Gods; it is far morelikely that foodborne illness was the actual demon to be reck-oned with. Fast forward to present day, and the connectionbetween our diet and ill health is not quite as linear. The ad-vent of industrialization begat food manufacturing processesthat make food safer with longer shelf lives, but we pay asteep price for the convenience. Processed food may tanta-lize our taste buds and look pretty, but it is nutritionally in-ferior to its wholesome counterparts – wholesome food isthe kind that you find more often in the outside perimeter ofthe supermarket than in the middle aisles. Wholesome foodis the stuff that good health is built on.
Yes, the middle aisles are where all the boxes, bags, cansand cartons of processed foods live. Processed foods havebeen stripped of many vital nutrients and transformed intoshelf stable products. “Foodstuffs” may be a more appropri-ate term for these items given that highly processed food isoften full of chemicals, dyes and a host of additives to staveoff spoilage and enhance flavour. Foodstuffs fool you intothinking they are real food – but they are not.
Your risk of chronic degenerative disease may be subtly cor-related to the amount of processed food you consume in yourdiet. Whereas botulism, salmonella and other foodborne ill-nesses come on swiftly and suddenly, processed food gradu-ally erodes your health slowly and over time. A diet high inprocessed food has been implicated in the escalating rates ofobesity, heart disease, diabetes and various cancers. The reallyscary thing is that with each new generation born into theprocessed food chain, degenerative diseases that were oncethe domain of the elders are now being diagnosed in youth.
There is a growing awareness around the chemicals inprocessed food, which has spurred a movement toward healthfood and organic alternatives. I suppose this is a step in the rightdirection as we are eliminating the pesticides, many chemicaladditives and other non-foods; but we have now given birth toa whole new processed food industry. Processed health food isstill processed food. Just because it has organic on the label, does not necessarily mean it is the best choice for your diet plan.
The best strategy for building and maintaining optimalhealth is to centre menu plans around whole foods which areas close to their natural state as possible. This includes a widevariety of quality proteins, healthy fats, fresh fruit and vegeta-bles, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. These foodsare vital sources of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, min-erals, enzymes, fibre, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. Theycontain only what nature provided and are not full of artificialanything. Some of the immediate benefits of eating morehealthful foods include increased energy, easier weight man-agement, clear skin, better digestion and brighter eyes.
The downside of these foods is that they often take moretime to prepare than their processed cousins. You can getaround this by planning ahead, learning how to use a slowcooker and incorporating more raw foods into your menus. If you are used to a predominately processed food diet, itmay also take some time for your taste buds to adjust to thenew eating plan. It is more likely to become a way of life ifyou go slow and make the change in gradual increments.Shift from white bread to whole grain then move away fromflour products altogether and opt for fibre rich whole grainslike quinoa and brown rice.
I may have chosen to live a preventive lifestyle, but I am cer-tainly not a purist. What I have learned over the years is that ifthe mainstay of my diet is based on wholesome foods, the oddtreat does not have a debilitating impact on my health. Everynow and then I have to test that theory as something pretty anddelicious beckons me from the bakery or the snack food aisle.Everything in moderation – even health food.
